Different countries and different nationalities have different cultures. There are differences between them as each culture has its characteristics. Therefore,as their different value, aesthetic taste, region and custom, different cultures assign different meanings to words.According to Tytler, the translation of cultural terms should follow the three principles of translation and adopt reasonable translation methods:retention method, transference translation method, transliteration method, hybrid method, approximation method, interpretation method and implication presentation method,to overcome the translation barriers caused by cultural differences and achieve the translation effect of functional equivalence proposed by Nida. 展开更多

Older adult falls are a significant public health problem, but one that is amenable to preventive interventions.1,2 Despite the progress made in identifying risk factors, developing efficacious health-related interventions, and promoting evidencebased programs in the community, much work remains before these strategies are broadly available and effectively used to reduce fall-related injuries.3 As Newton and ScottFindlay4 have pointed out,the translation of basic scientific knowledge into clinical studies, and the transformation of clinical studies into improvements in health services and public health practices, remain major obstacles to widespread adoption. 展开更多

This paper reviews the translation process of Michael Meyer’s Response to Modernity-A History of the Reform Movement in Judaism. As the translator of this book, the author points out the problems confronted in the course of translation from the lexical, phrasal, sentential, and textual levels, meanwhile provides the corresponding translating strategies to solve these difficulties. The cultural strategy bridges the gap between the original work and the target language readers while the textual approach enhances the readability of the translated version. The translation of Response to Modernity into Chinese is of significant reference value for Chinese scholars dedicated to Jewish studies. 展开更多

When we look through the world history, it can be seen clearly that language has a great role on culture, arts, and social movements, and the translation is an important player in this context. A commonly shared European culture together with its values has emerged as a product of such sociolinguistic dynamics. Following these encounters, whether at word borrowing level or morpho-syntactical level, European languages have had positive and/or negative effects on each other and have evolved ever since in this way as they have permeated themselves into culture. From the point of view on translation's intermediary role in enabling interaction between cultures throughout the history, the aim of the present study is to problematize the answers to the following questions: What are cultural ramifications that stem from linguistic encounter? What are the contributions of translated language to acculturation and enculturation processes? Can the new information through translation produce a culture translation phenomenon? How the hybrid understanding functions? Translation itself is a language encounter that makes impact on targeted languages as well as on its source. In this study, the dynamics that form this encounter space as a meta textual phenomenon has been problematized. 展开更多

Some critics claim that Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior has distorted Chinese culture. However, from the view of skopos theory, Kingston actually translates Chinese culture to the American audience successfully. Therefore an analysis of the novel from the perspective of skopos theory can justify Kingston's culture translation against the critiques. 展开更多

The 1947 edition of T‘ai-Chi Ch‘üan:Its Effects and Practical Applications,an English translation of the original Chinese work,is by far the first discovered English publication systematically introducing the knowledge and skills of taijiquan(previously known as T‘ai-Chi Ch‘üan). The 1947 edition had long remained in oblivion in Chinese academic circles, although it paved the way for the extensive popularization of taijiquan and has exerted a far-reaching impact on the English-speaking world. This paper applies the four dimensions of canonicity(rich content, substantial creativity,time-and-space transcendency, infinite readability)to examine the aesthetic value of the English text. The purpose is to reveal the understanding and reception of taijiquan among English readers, shed light on the English translation of the taijiquan culture, and promote the canonization of taijiquan as a representative of fine traditional Chinese culture and its integration into global cultures. 展开更多

Based on concepts of horizon of expectation and indeterminacy in reception theory, this paper reports a comparative analysis of Chang Hen Ge,a narrative poem written by Chinese poet Bai Juyi in the Tang Dynasty, and its English translations by William John Bainbrigge Fletcher,Herbert Allen Giles,Xu Yuanchong as well as Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang. Results are as follows:1)Xu’s translation is the best in that he adds annotations and combines literal and free translations so as to explicate cultural connotations and underlying implications of images while meeting and broadening target readers’horizon of expectation. In addition,he tries to replicate figurative characteristics and transform rhetorical techniques of original cultural images to retain the source text’s indeterminacy and aesthetic value and to provide target readers with intense aesthetic experience.2)There are inappropriate and inaccurate translations of cultural images in all the four English translations, and they are caused by differences in ethnic history, religious belief, mode of thinking, features of English and Chinese as well as the subjectivity of translators. 展开更多

West of Japan/East of Europe: Translating Architectural Legacies and the Case of Bruno Taut’s Hyuga Villa

Based on communications presented at the international symposium‘West of Japan/East of Europe’,hosted by the Department of Architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in concomitance with the exhibition‘Bruno Taut’s Hyuga Villa in Atami,Japan’,this text discusses the question of cultural translation in architecture departing from the example of Hyuga Villa, realised by Taut in 1936.Despite the inherently immobile status of architecture, architectural ideas travel widely,as well as their conceivers, the architects. The cultural passage implicit to translation is never flawless, though.Hyuga Villa offers a good case in point, since it was conceived by an architect who had only a partial grasp of local culture and who tried to integrate elements of both Western and Japanese design. But what are the implications of‘translating’architecture? Can we translate not only words but also images, details, building conventions, even aesthetic sensitivities? And is everything translatable?Applied to an artifact recognised today as an important testimony to the encounter between Western and Eastern design cultures, these questions relate to issues that are central to the debate on both architectural history and built heritage, proposing an alternative approach in terms of method and scope. 展开更多
