Carbon nanotube(CNT)/polymer nanocomposites have vast application in industry because of their light mass and high strength. In this work, a cylindrical tube which is made up of functionally graded(FG) PmP V/CNT nanocomposite, is optimally designed for the purpose of torque transmission. The main confining parameters of a rotating shaft in torque transmission process are mass of the shaft, critical speed of rotation and critical buckling torque. It is required to solve a multi-objective optimization problem(MOP) to consider these three targets simultaneously in the process of design. The three-objective optimization problem for this case is defined and solved using a hybrid method of FEM and modified non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm(NSGA-II), by coupling two softwares, MATLAB and ABAQUS. Optimization process provides a set of non-dominated optimal design vectors. Then, two methods, nearest to ideal point(NIP) and technique for ordering preferences by similarity to ideal solution(TOPSIS), are employed to choose trade-off optimum design vectors. Optimum parameters that are obtained from this work are compared with the results of previous studies for similar cylindrical tubes made from composite or a hybrid of aluminum and composite that more than 20% improvement is observed in all of the objective functions. 展开更多

The paper presents an energy iterative method to determine the second critical velocity by comparing the time histories of the kinetic energy and the buckling deformation based on the finite element model of the impact system. To design anti-impact structures of the thin-wall cylindrical tubes with this new method, the cost of the experiment can be considerably reduced. The feasibility and validity of this method are demonstrated by a dropping hammer experiment. In addition, this paper deals with the influence of constrained damping layers on the anti-impact capability and energy-absorption of thin-wall cylindrical tubes. Results show that the constrained damping layers make the energy-absorption and the anti-impact capability increased comparing with the naked tubes; the thickness of the damping layer should be restricted in a range, or else the anti-impact capability will decrease with the increase of the damping layer thickness; for the constrained layer, the anti-impact capability will increase with the augment of its thickness. 展开更多

The natural dynamic characteristics of a circular cylindrical tube made of three-directional(3 D)functional graded material(FGM)based on the Timoshenko beam theory are investigated.Hamilton’s principle is utilized to derive the novel motion equations of the tube, considering the interactions among the longitudinal, transverse, and rotation deformations.By dint of the differential quadrature method(DQM),the governing equations are discretized to conduct the analysis of natural dynamic characteristics. The Ritz method,in conjunction with the finite element method(FEM),is introduced to verify the present results. It is found that the asymmetric modes in the tube are controlled by the 3 D FGM,which exhibit more complicated shapes compared with the unidirectional(1 D)and bi-directional(2 D)FGM cases.Numerical examples illustrate the effects of the axial, radial, and circumferential FGM indexes as well as the supported edges on the natural dynamic characteristics in detail. It is notable that the obtained results are beneficial for accurate design of smart structures composed from multi-directional FGM. 展开更多

In this paper, the problem of axially symmetric deformation is examined for a composite cylindrical tube under equal axial loads acting on its two ends, where the tube is composed of two different incompressible neo-Hookean materials.Significantly, the implicit analytical solutions describing the deformation of the tube are proposed.Numerical simulations are given to further illustrate the qualitative properties of the solutions and some meaningful conclusions are obtained. In the tension case, with the increasing axial loads or with the decreasing ratio of shear moduli of the outer and the inner materials,it is proved that the tube will shrink more along the radial direction and will extend more along the axial direction.Under either tension or compression, the deformation along the axial direction is obvious near the two ends of the tube, while in the rest, the change is relatively small.Similarly, for a large domain of the middle part, the axial elongation is almost constant;however, the variation is very fast near the two ends.In addition, the absolute value of the axial displacement increases gradually from the central cross-section of the tube and achieves the maximum at the two endpoints. 展开更多

Although the sonic soot cleaning techniques have been applied in boilers in power plants, petrochemical works and general industries world wide, most of the correlated basic problems have not been well solved yet. By using Helmholtz integral equation, sound wave scattered by heat-exchanger tubes is numerically calculated. Sound field distribution characteristics on the tube surfaces and around the tube group is obtained. The results can be applied to the development of sonic soot cleaning techniques in boilers. 展开更多

A design for an air-cooled test tube, with a series of modular and movable rings (cylindrical “crystallization comb”), installed in a laboratory crucible furnace is presented. The setup allows easy regulation simultaneous crystallization tests of a series of different crystallization rates in several columns (matrix) of test tubes, enabling fast studies of obtaining crystals. This low-budget, portable device (i.e. adjustable airstream with more simple control options), can also be applied in tube and chamber furnaces. The relations between the crystallization rate and parameters of air-cooled test tube are given and numerically analyzed. 展开更多
