The radiation damage of three individual subcells for GalnP/GaAs//Ge triple-junction solar cells irradiated with electrons and protons is investigated using photoluminescence (PL) measurements. The PL spectra of each subcell are obtained using different excitation lasers. The PL intensity has a fast degradation after irradiation, and decreases as the displacement damage dose increases. Furthermore, the normalized PL intensity varying with the displacement damage dose is analyzed in detail, and then the lifetime damage coefficients of the recombination centers for GaInP top-cell, GaAs mid-cell and Ge bottom-cell of the triple-junction solar cells are determined from the PL radiative efficiency. 展开更多

Influence of Assembly Parameters on Tensile Behavior of Hybrid CMC and Superalloy Bolted Joints by Progressive Damage Analysis

With the considerable applications of ceramic matrix composites(CMC) in aircraft engineering, the design of CMC bolted joint gains paramount attention because of its capacity to to improve load-bearing efficiency of aircraft key structure. In this work, a 3 D finite element model was established to predict tensile performance and failure modes of single-lap, single-bolt 2 D C/SiC composite, and superalloy joint, which considers the progressive damage behavior of 2 D woven C/SiC composites. On the basis of the developed progressive damage model, a parametric study was carried out to illustrate the effects of bolt preload and bolt-hole clearance on mechanical behaviors of the hybrid bolted joint. It was found that the increase in the value of bolt preload made the failure load grow first and then drop, and the optimum value of bolt preload 5.00 kN generated 56.47% rise in the initial failure load and 22.83% rise in the final failure load for the bolted joint in comparison with zero preload case. As the clearance increased from 0 to 2.00%, the initial and final failure loads respectively declined by 45.88% and 24.02% for 2.00% bolt-hole clearance relative to the neat-fit case. The loss in failure loads can be reduced to compressive stress concentration around the fastening hole-edge area, leading to the appearance of earlier damages by the introduction of increasing bolt hole clearance. 展开更多

To explore the response law of non-lethal large-size kinetic energy projectiles to blunt attack on skin tissue,and to evaluate the skin injury characteristics of the attacked personnel and the use safety of kinetic energy projectiles.Based on the LS-DYNA simulation software,a three-layer skin simulation model and a Flash-Ball rubber bullet model are established,and the force-time and deformation-time biomechanical corridors of the Flash-Ball rubber bullet impacting human skin tissue are obtained.The corridor curve and the energy transfer and diffusion are analyzed and compared.The safety evaluation of the damage caused by the rubber bullet shooting a human body at different distances is carried out using the empirical formula of the penetration limit.Finally,the safe shooting distance is obtained.The results show that the model used in the simulation has a good correlation with the experimental data,its biomechanical corridor characteristics are different from those of conventional vehicle impact and smallsize projectile response characteristics.The energy transfer and action time of medium and low-speed impact may cause greater damage.The fat layer is the largest energy absorption unit.The minimum safe shooting distance to ensure skin tissue from penetrating damage is 15.8 m,and the limit specific kinetic energy of skin damage is 7.88 J/cm^(2).This study can be extended to the study of biomechanical response law and safety evaluation under the impact of the same type of large kinetic energy projectile,which provides an important theoretical reference for the police to use large kinetic energy projectiles to conduct safe shooting in peacekeeping operations. 展开更多

Given the difficulty in accurately evaluating the fatigue performance of large composite wind turbine blades(referred to as blades),this paper takes the main beam structure of the blade with a rectangular cross-sectionas the simulation object and establishes a composite laminate rectangular beam structure that simultaneouslyincludes the flange,web,and adhesive layer,referred to as the blade main beam sub-structure specimen,throughthe definition of blade sub-structures.This paper examines the progressive damage evolution law of the compositelaminate rectangular beam utilizing an improved 3D Hashin failure criterion,cohesive zone model,B-K failurecriterion,and computer simulation technology.Under static loading,the layup angle of the anti-shear web hasa close relationship with the static load-carrying capacity of the composite laminate rectangular beam;under fatigueloading,the fatigue damage will first occur in the lower flange adhesive area of the whole composite laminaterectangular beam and ultimately result in the fracture failure of the entire structure.These results provide a theoreticalreference and foundation for evaluating and predicting the fatigue performance of the blade main beamstructure and even the full-size blade. 展开更多

Fuzzy-ball working fluids(FBWFs)have been successfully applied in different development phases of tight reservoirs.Field reports revealed that FBWFs satisfactorily met all the operational and reservoir damage control requirements during their application.However,the damage-control mechanisms and degree of formation damage caused by fuzzy-ball fluids have not been investigated in lab-scale studies so far.In this study,the degree of fuzzy-ball-induced damage in single-and double-layer reservoirs was evaluated through core flooding experiments that were based on permeability and flow rate indexes.Additionally,its damage mechanisms were observed via scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscopy tests.The results show that:(1)For single-layer reservoirs,the FBWF induced weak damage on coals and medium-to-weak damage on sandstones,and the difference of the damage in permeability or flow rate index on coals and sandstones is below 1%.Moreover,the minimum permeability recovery rate was above 66%.(2)For double-layer commingled reservoirs,the flow rate index revealed weak damage and the overall damage in double-layer was lower than the single-layer reservoirs.(3)There is no significant alteration in the microscopic structure of fuzzy-ball saturated cores with no evidence of fines migration.The dissolution of lead and sulfur occurred in coal samples,while tellurium in sandstone,aluminum,and magnesium in carbonate.However,the precipitation of aluminum,magnesium,and sodium occurred in sandstone but no precipitates found in coal and carbonate.The temporal plugging and dispersion characteristics of the FBWFs enable the generation of reservoir protection layers that will minimize formation damage due to solid and fluid invasion. 展开更多

Distribution networks denote important public infrastructure necessary for people’s livelihoods.However,extreme natural disasters,such as earthquakes,typhoons,and mudslides,severely threaten the safe and stable operation of distribution networks and power supplies needed for daily life.Therefore,considering the requirements for distribution network disaster prevention and mitigation,there is an urgent need for in-depth research on risk assessment methods of distribution networks under extreme natural disaster conditions.This paper accessesmultisource data,presents the data quality improvement methods of distribution networks,and conducts data-driven active fault diagnosis and disaster damage analysis and evaluation using data-driven theory.Furthermore,the paper realizes real-time,accurate access to distribution network disaster information.The proposed approach performs an accurate and rapid assessment of cross-sectional risk through case study.The minimal average annual outage time can be reduced to 3 h/a in the ring network through case study.The approach proposed in this paper can provide technical support to the further improvement of the ability of distribution networks to cope with extreme natural disasters. 展开更多

In the experiment,five known damage patterns,including 3 brace damage cases and 2 joint damage cases,were simulated by removing braces and weakening beam鈥揷olumn connections in the structure. The limited acceleration response data generated by hammer impact were used for system identification,and modal parameters were extracted by using the eigensystem realization algorithm. In the first stage,the possible damaged locations are determined by using the damage index and the characteristics of the analytical model itself,and the extent of damage for those substructures identified at stage I is estimated in the second stage by using a second-order eigen-sensitivity approximation method. The main contribution of this paper is to test the two-stage method by using the real dynamic data of a complicated spatial model structure with limited sensors. The analysis results indicate that the two-stage approach is ableto detect the location of both damage cases,only the severity of brace damage cases can be assessed,and the reasonable analytical model is critical for successful damage detection. 展开更多

Studies were performed to determine the extent of nuclear DNA degradation induced by iron, iron-ascorbate, or iron-bleomycin under aerobic conditions in a model system using isolated rat liver nuclei. The effects of five antioxidants (catalase, superoxide dismutase, dimethyl sulfoxide, glutathione and diallyl sulfide) on this oxidative nuclear damage were also investigated. At the 0.05 level for statistical significance, iron induced concentration-dependent DNA degradation, and this effect was enhanced by ascorbate and bleomycin. The antioxidants catalase, dimethyl sulfoxide, and diallyl sulfide significantly reduced the iron-ascorbate-induced DNA damage, whereas superoxide dismutase and dimethyl sulfoxide significantly reduced iron-bleomycin-induced damage. Glutathione significantly increased the iron-bleomycin-induced DNA damage. These results suggest that the reactive oxygen species generated by iron, iron-ascorbate, and iron-bleomycin are responsible for the DNA strand breaks in isolated rat liver nuclei. 展开更多

Photoluminescence(PL) measurements are carried out to investigate the degradation of GaInP top cell and GaAs middle cell for GaInP/GaAs/Ge triple-junction solar cells irradiated with 1.0, 1.8 and 11.5 MeV electrons with fluences ranging up to 3 × 10^15, 1 × 10^15 and 3 × 10^14 cm^-2, respectively. The degradation rates of PL intensity increase with the electron fluence and energy. Furthermore, the damage coefficient of minority carrier diffusion length is estimated by the PL radiative efficiency. The damage coefficient increases with the electron energy. The relation of damage coefficient to electron energy is discussed with the non-ionizing energy loss(NIEL), which shows a quadratic dependence between damage coefficient and NIEL. 展开更多

Ceramic matrix composite(CMC)and superalloy bolted joints are commonly used high temperature connection structures in aerospace and aeronautical fields.In this paper,a finite element model coupled with progressive damage analysis of 2D C/SiC composites and superalloy bolted joint was implemented to simulate the uniaxial tensile loading process by using the ABAQUS finite element software.The parametric effects of raised head bolt on stress distribution,tensile performance,and damage process were studied for the CMC⁃superalloy bolted joint structures.The results showed that the final failure load increased first to the maximum value,and then decreased with the rise of bolt diameter,bolt head diameter,and bolt head thickness,respectively.When the three parameters were 5.0 mm,9.5 mm,and 2.8 mm for the current studied bolt configuration,the joint structure gave the maximum load bearing capacity for the considered parameter ranges.It was also found that around 42%potential improvement in load bearing capacity could be achieved by very small adjustments in bolt parameters of the joints. 展开更多

Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are the preferred materials for solving advanced aerospace high-temperature structural components;it has the comprehensive advantages of higher temperature (~1500˚C) and low density. In service environments, CMCs exhibit complex damage mechanisms and failure modes, which are affected by constituent materials, meso-architecture and inhere defects. In this paper, the in-plane tensile mechanical behavior of a plain-woven SiCf/SiC composite at room and elevated temperatures was investigated, and the factors affecting the tensile strength of the material were discussed in depth. The results show that the tensile modulus and strength of SiCf/SiC composites at high temperature are lower, but the fracture strain increases and the toughness of the composites is enhanced;the stitching holes significantly weaken the tensile strength of the material, resulting in the material is easy to break at the cross-section with stitching holes. 展开更多

The method isthen used to investigate the influence of rock strength properties on tunnel durability to withstand blastloads. The presented analysis considers blast damage in tunnels excavated through relatively weak(sandstone) and strong (granite) rock materials. It was found that higher rock strength will increase thetunnel resistance to the load on one hand, but decrease attenuation on the other hand. First, a damage quantification method is formulated and iterative approach is adopted for determining the damage extent. Then a damage localization algorithm is proposed, in which a damage indicator is formulated where unity value corresponds to the true damage scenario. With the in-depth development of the Sargiz oilfield in Kazakhstan, oil layer protection plays an extremely important role in the development process. The petrological characteristics and pore types of the reservoir were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The average face ratio of the reservoir was 19.30%. The main pore type was intergranular pore and the face rate was 17.52%. The total amount of clay minerals in the reservoir core is 7% - 10%, and the clay minerals are mainly illite, Yimeng, kaolinite and chlorite;the shale content of the main oil-bearing layer is about 3% - 10%. Refer to relevant industry standards for speed, water, stress, acid, and alkali sensitivity experiments to study the potential damage mechanism of the reservoir. According to the above experiments, the oilfield reservoirs have no speed-sensitive damage and are weakly water-sensitive reservoirs;the reservoirs are highly stress-sensitive and easy to produce sand when the stress changes;they have moderately weak acid sensitivity and weak-medium weak alkaline. 展开更多

Under variable loading,fatigue life prediction is very important for the selection,design,and safety assessments of these components.In this study,based on the Miner rule,an improved damage accumulation rule was proposed to consider the strengthening and damaging of low amplitude loads.The complexity of fatigue phenomenon results in predicting fatigue life difficulty.Since grey models(GMs)only require a limited amount of data to estimate the behavior of unknown systems,they are used in this paper to account for the uncertainties resulting from various sources when fatigue life of component is predicted.An improved unequal interval GM(IUGM(1,1))has been developed and applied successfully to estimation of fatigue life.An example is used to illustrate how the method works.The results show that the proposed model not only overcomes the limitations of the traditional grey forecasting model of linear change series,but also increases the scope of GM in the fatigue life prediction of mechanical components,and its accuracy is higher than that of the traditional model.Moreover,the results indicate that the IUGM(1,1)is capable of predicting component fatigue life better than the traditional Miner rule,and yields a high prediction precision. 展开更多

The 2014 Jure landslide in Sindhupalchok District, Nepal, caused significant loss and damage to ecosystems and livelihoods in the area. In the direct aftermath of the landslide, several disaster loss assessments were conducted, with the aim of counting casualties,injured people, and damaged houses and infrastructure.Although useful and necessary in their own right, such rapid assessments do not reveal the true extent and significance of the losses and damages that people in disaster areas face, including their monetary value. We address this gap, based on a comprehensive household survey(N = 234), as well as other, qualitative research tools. Our results highlight the importance of differentiating between loss and damage in absolute monetary terms as opposed to losses relative to annual income. We find a stark contrast between the high absolute losses incurred by nonpoor households, and the high relative losses—up to 14 times their annual income—experienced by poor households.These results have important implications for policy that addresses loss and damage, not only of landslides but also of other disasters. Loss and damage assessments need to take the livelihood characteristics of affected households into account to identify and support those most in need of compensation and relief. 展开更多

In this paper,a simplified analytical method used to predict the residual ultimate strength of a ship hull after a shoal grounding accident is proposed.Shoal grounding accidents always lead to severe denting,though not tearing,of the ship bottom structure,which may threaten the global hull girder resistance and result in even worse consequences,such as hull collapse.Here,the degree of damage of the bottom structure is predicted by a series of analytical methods based on the plastic-elastic deformation mechanism.The energy dissipation of a ship bottom structure is obtained from individual components to determine the sliding distance of the seabed obstruction.Then,a new approach to assess the residual strength of the damaged ship subjected to shoal grounding is proposed based on the improved Smith’s method.This analytical method is verified by comparing the results of the proposed method and those generated by numerical simulation using the software ABAQUS.The proposed analytical method can be used to assess the safety of a ship with a double bottom during its design phase and predict the residual ultimate strength of a ship after a shoal grounding accident occurs. 展开更多
