Big data challenge for monitoring quality in higher education institutions using business intelligence dashboards

As big data becomes an apparent challenge to handle when building a business intelligence(BI)system,there is a motivation to handle this challenging issue in higher education institutions(HEIs).Monitoring quality in HEIs encompasses handling huge amounts of data coming from different sources.This paper reviews big data and analyses the cases from the literature regarding quality assurance(QA)in HEIs.It also outlines a framework that can address the big data challenge in HEIs to handle QA monitoring using BI dashboards and a prototype dashboard is presented in this paper.The dashboard was developed using a utilisation tool to monitor QA in HEIs to provide visual representations of big data.The prototype dashboard enables stakeholders to monitor compliance with QA standards while addressing the big data challenge associated with the substantial volume of data managed by HEIs’QA systems.This paper also outlines how the developed system integrates big data from social media into the monitoring dashboard. 展开更多

Gamification in education enables for the holistic optimization of the learning process,empowering learners to ameliorate their digital,cognitive,emotional and social skills,via their active experimentation with game design elements,accompanying pertinent pedagogical objectives of interest.This paper focuses on a cross-platform,innovative,gamified,educational learning system product,funded by the Hellenic Republic Ministry of Development and Investments:howlearn.By applying gamification techniques,in 3D virtual environments,within which,learners fulfil STEAM(Science,Technology,Engineering,Arts and Mathematics)-related Experiments(Simulations,Virtual Labs,Interactive Storytelling Scenarios,Decision Making Case Studies),howlearn covers learners’subject material,while,simultaneously,functioning,as an Authoring Gamification Tool and as a Game Metrics Repository;users’metrics are being,dynamically,analyzed,through Machine Learning Algorithms.Consequently,the System learns from the data and learners receive Personalized Feedback Report Dashboards of their overall performance,weaknesses,interests and general class competency.A Custom Recommendation System(Collaborative Filtering,Content-Based Filtering)then supplies suggestions,representing the best matches between Experiments and learners,while also focusing on the reinforcement of the learning weaknesses of the latter.Ultimately,by optimizing the Accuracy,Performance and Predictive capability of the Personalized Feedback Report,we provide learners with scientifically valid performance assessments and educational recommendations,thence intensifying sustainable,learner-centered education. 展开更多

The transportation of sputum samples is an efficient method of increasing access to tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics in areas where testing is not currently available. One of the major reasons for the low yield of TB cases in the field was delay in sputum sample transportation to diagnostic laboratories among other factors. Damien Foundation Belgium, carried out a unique sputum riders initiatives in 20 LGAs of Lagos state between Q3-2019 and Q4-2020. A total of 25 sputum dispatch riders across the 20 LGAs in the State who are monitored routinely on an electronic dashboard were engaged for sputum logistics. Therefore, this report highlights how the initiatives ha</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">ve </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">contributed to increased TB case notification in a densely populated metropolitan city in Nigeria. </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Overall, </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">48,265 units of sputum samples were transported to the laboratory from the facilities 99.9% of results </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">which </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">were received from the laboratory by the dispatch riders</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">. </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">The contribution of sputum riders to the overall TB case detection by the project progressively increased from 9% when the intervention began to 57% as at Q4 2020. The transportation of sputum samples by motorcycle dispatch riders is an efficient method of increasing access to TB diagnostic services in communities where testing is not currently available.</span> 展开更多

Data visualization and interactive data exploration are important aspects of illustrating complex concepts and results from analyses of omics data.A suitable visualization has to be intuitive and accessible.Web-based dashboards have become popular tools for the arrangement,consolidation,and display of such visualizations.However,the combination of automated data processing pipelines handling omics data and dynamically generated,interactive dashboards is poorly solved.Here,we present i2dash,an R package intended to encapsulate functionality for the programmatic creation of customized dashboards.It supports interactive and responsive(linked)visualizations across a set of predefined graphical layouts.i2dash addresses the needs of data analysts/software developers for a tool that is compatible and attachable to any R-based analysis pipeline,thereby fostering the separation of data visualization on one hand and data analysis tasks on the other hand.In addition,the generic design of i2dash enables the development of modular extensions for specific needs.As a proof of principle,we provide an extension of i2dash optimized for single-cell RNA sequencing analysis,supporting the creation of dashboards for the visualization needs of such experiments.Equipped with these features,i2dash is suitable for extensive use in large-scale sequencing/bioinformatics facilities.Along this line,we provide i2dash as a containerized solution,enabling a straightforward large-scale deployment and sharing of dashboards using cloud services.i2dash is freely available via the R package archive CRAN(https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=i2dash). 展开更多

仪表板是支持制造企业开展数据可视化分析和经营决策的重要手段。为解决可视化仪表板设计与实现过程中用户对专业知识依赖性强及流程迭代繁杂的问题,提出了一种基于深度学习技术YOLOv5s算法的可视化仪表板自动识别与生成方法。首先,基于... 仪表板是支持制造企业开展数据可视化分析和经营决策的重要手段。为解决可视化仪表板设计与实现过程中用户对专业知识依赖性强及流程迭代繁杂的问题,提出了一种基于深度学习技术YOLOv5s算法的可视化仪表板自动识别与生成方法。首先,基于YOLOv5s算法对仪表板图像及手绘草图中包含的可视化图表组件进行检测,并针对在检测过程中出现的手绘草图中不规则线条对识别图表的干扰及误检等问题,引入CA注意力机制来增强模型对重要特征的关注及目标精确定位能力,从而提高模型的识别精度;其次,将图表检测模型部署在Web中,服务器根据模型检测结果调用封装好的可视化图表组件代码,生成多组件组合的初始仪表板;最后,基于此Web设计,开发了一款数据可视化仪表板构建平台,为用户提供可修改配置仪表板样式及数据的详细选项,以方便用户快速构建完整的仪表板。通过收集Tableau,Power BI等可视化工具产生的仪表板图像及企业应用过程中手绘仪表板草图形成数据集,基于该数据集进行实验验证,改进的模型识别精度比原YOLOv5s模型提升了2.1%,mAP为98.4%,并通过系统部署应用验证了图表识别方法及开发的平台可有效识别及生成相应图表组件,满足用户的基本需求。 展开更多
