When investigating the vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of marine risers, extrapolating the dynamic response on the entire length based on limited sensor measurements is a crucial step in both laboratory experiments and fatigue monitoring of real risers. The problem is conventionally solved using the modal decomposition method, based on the principle that the response can be approximated by a weighted sum of limited vibration modes. However, the method is not valid when the problem is underdetermined,i.e.,the number of unknown mode weights is more than the number of known measurements. This study proposed a sparse modal decomposition method based on the compressed sensing theory and the Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit(Co Sa MP)algorithm, exploiting the sparsity of VIV in the modal space. In the validation study based on high-order VIV experiment data, the proposed method successfully reconstructed the response using only seven acceleration measurements when the conventional methods failed.A primary advantage of the proposed method is that it offers a completely data-driven approach for the underdetermined VIV reconstruction problem, which is more favorable than existing model-dependent solutions for many practical applications such as riser structural health monitoring. 展开更多

To prevent early bridge failures, effective Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is vital. Vibration-based damage assessment is a powerful tool in this regard, as it relies on changes in a structure’s dynamic characteristics as it degrades. By measuring the vibration response of a bridge due to passing vehicles, this approach can identify potential structural damage. This dissertation introduces a novel technique grounded in Vehicle-Bridge Interaction (VBI) to evaluate bridge health. It aims to detect damage by analyzing the response of passing vehicles, taking into account VBI. The theoretical foundation of this method begins with representing the bridge’s superstructure using a Finite Element Model and employing a half-car dynamic model to simulate the vehicle with suspension. Two sets of motion equations, one for the bridge and one for the vehicle are generated using the Finite Element Method, mode superposition, and D’Alembert’s principle. The combined dynamics are solved using the Newmark-beta method, accounting for road surface roughness. A new approach for damage identification based on the response of passing vehicles is proposed. The response is theoretically composed of vehicle frequency, bridge natural frequency, and a pseudo-frequency component related to vehicle speed. The Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method is applied to decompose the signal into its constituent parts, and damage detection relies on the Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) corresponding to the vehicle speed component. This technique effectively identifies various damage scenarios considered in the study. 展开更多

In the pump-controlled motor hydraulic transmission system, when the pressure pulsation frequencies seperately generated by the pump and the motor are close to each other, the hydraulic system will generate a strong pressure beat vibration phenomenon, which will seriously affect the smooth running of the hydraulic system. However, the modulated pressure signal also carries information related to the operating state of the hydraulic system, and a accurate extraction of pressure vibration characteristics is the key to obtain the operating state information of the hydraulic system. In order to extract the pressure beat vibration signal component effectively from the multi-component time-varying aliasing pressure signal and reconstruct the time domain characteristics,an extraction method of the pressure beat vibration characteristics of the hydraulic transmission system based on variational mode decomposition(VMD)is proposed. The experimental results show that the VMD method can accurately extract the pressure beat vibration characteristics from the high-pressure oil pressure signal of the hydraulic system, and the extraction effect is preferable to that of the traditional signal processing methods such as empirical mode decomposition(EMD). 展开更多

The screening of particles with different vibration modes was simulated by means of a 3D discrete element method (3D-DEM). The motion and penetration of the particles on the screen deck were analyzed for linear, circular and elliptical vibration of the screen. The results show that the travel velocity of the particles is the fastest, but the screening efficiency is the lowest, for the linear vibration mode. The circular motion resulted in the highest screening efficiency, but the lowest particle travel velocity. In the steady state the screening efficiency for each mode is seen to increase gradually along the longitudinal direction of the deck. The screening efficiency increment of the circular mode is the largest while the linear mode shows the smallest increment. The volume fraction of near-mesh size particles at the underside is larger than that of small size particles all along the screen deck. Linear screening mode has more near-mesh and small size particles on the first three deck sections, and fewer on the last two sections, compared to the circular or elliptical modes. 展开更多

A new matrix perturbation analysis method is presented for efficient approximate solution of the complex modal quadratic generalized eigenvalue problem of viscously damped linear vibration systems. First, the damping matrix is decomposed into the sum of a proportional-and a nonproportional-damping parts, and the solutions of the real modal eigenproblem with the proportional dampings are determined, which are a set of initial approximate solutions of the complex modal eigenproblem. Second, by taking the nonproportional-damping part as a small modification to the proportional one and using the matrix perturbation analysis method, a set of approximate solutions of the complex modal eigenvalue problem can be obtained analytically. The result is quite simple. The new method is applicable to the systems with viscous dampings-which do not deviate far away from the proportional-damping case. It is particularly important that the solution technique be also effective to the systems with heavy, but not over, dampings. The solution formulas of complex modal eigenvlaues and eigenvectors are derived up to second-order perturbation terms. The effectiveness of the perturbation algorithm is illustrated by an exemplar numerical problem with heavy dampings. In addition, the practicability of approximately estimating the complex modal eigenvalues, under the proportional-damping hypothesis, of damped vibration systems is discussed by several numerical examples. 展开更多

The coupling vibration of a hydraulic pipe system consisting of two pipes is studied. The pipes are installed in parallel and fixed at their ends, and are restrained by clips to one bracket at their middle points. The pipe subjected to the basement excitation at the left end is named as the active pipe, while the pipe without excitation is called the passive pipe. The clips between the two pipes are the bridge for the vibration energy. The adjacent natural frequencies will enhance the vibration coupling. The governing equation of the coupled system is deduced by the generalized Hamilton principle, and is discretized to the modal space. The modal correction is used during the discretization. The investigation on the natural characters indicates that the adjacent natural frequencies can be adjusted by the stiffness of the two clips and bracket. The harmonic balance method(HBM)is used to study the responses in the adjacent natural frequency region. The results show that the vibration energy transmits from the active pipe to the passive pipe swimmingly via the clips together with a flexible bracket, while the locations of them are not node points. The adjacent natural frequencies may arouse wide resonance curves with two peaks for both pipes. The stiffness of the clip and bracket can release the vibration coupling. It is suggested that the stiffness of the clip on the passive pipe should be weak and the bracket should be strong enough. In this way,the vibration energy is reflected by the almost rigid bracket, and is hard to transfer to the passive pipe via a soft clip. The best choice is to set the clips at the pipe node points. The current work gives some suggestions for weakening the coupled vibration during the dynamic design of a coupled hydraulic pipe system. 展开更多

Electric vibrators find wide applications in reliability testing, waveform generation, and vibration simulation, making their noise characteristics a topic of significant interest. While Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and Empirical Wavelet Transform (EWT) offer valuable support for studying signal components, they also present certain limitations. This article integrates the strengths of both methods and proposes an enhanced approach that integrates VMD into the frequency band division principle of EWT. Initially, the method decomposes the signal using VMD, determining the mode count based on residuals, and subsequently employs EWT decomposition based on this information. This addresses mode aliasing issues in the original method while capitalizing on VMD’s adaptability. Feasibility was confirmed through simulation signals and ultimately applied to noise signals from vibrators. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved method not only resolves EWT frequency band division challenges but also effectively decomposes signal components compared to the VMD method. 展开更多

The computational cost of unsteady adjoint equations remains high in adjoint-based unsteady aerodynamic op-timization.In this letter, the solution of unsteady adjoint equations is accelerated by dynamic mode decomposi-tion(DMD).The pseudo-time marching of every real-time step is approximated as an infinite-dimensional linear dynamical system.Thereafter,DMD is utilized to analyze the adjoint vectors sampled from these pseudo-time marching.First-order zero frequency mode is selected to accelerate the pseudo-time marching of unsteady adjoint equations in every real-time step.Through flow past a stationary circular cylinder and an unsteady aerodynamic shape optimization example, the efficiency of solving unsteady adjoint equations is significantly improved.Re-sults show that one hundred adjoint vectors contains enough information about the pseudo-time dynamics, and the adjoint dominant mode can be precisely predicted only by five snapshots produced from the adjoint vectors, which indicates DMD analysis for pseudo-time marching of unsteady adjoint equations is efficient. 展开更多

Then, based on this study and the previous reports, a precise three-dimensional numerical model was developed and natural frequencies and vibration modes of dragonfly forewing were determined by finite element method. The results shown that dragonfly wings are made of a series of adaptive materials, which form a very complex composite structure. This bio-composite fabrication has some unique features and potential benefits. Furthermore, the numerical results show that the first natural frequency of dragonfly wings is about 168 Hz and bending is the predominant deformation mode in this stage. In the present study of peak particle velocity(PPV)and frequency,an improved algorithm(principal empirical mode decomposition,PEMD)based on principal component analysis(PCA)and empirical mode decomposition(EMD)is proposed, with the goal of addressing poor filtering de-noising effects caused by the occurrences of modal aliasing phenomena in EMD blasting vibration signal decomposition processes.Test results showed that frequency of intrinsic mode function(IMF)components decomposed by PEMD gradually decreases and that the main frequency is unique, which eliminates the phenomenon of modal aliasing. In the simulation experiment, the signal-to-noise(SNR)and root mean square errors(RMSE)ratio of the signal de-noised by PEMD are the largest when compared to EMD and ensemble empirical mode decomposition(EEMD).The main frequency of the de-noising signal through PEMD is 75 Hz,which is closest to the frequency of the noiseless simulation signal. In geotechnical engineering blasting experiments, compared to EMD and EEMD,the signal de-noised by PEMD has the lowest level of distortion, and the frequency band is distributed in a range of 0-64 Hz,which is closest to the frequency band of the blasting vibration signal. In addition, the proportion of noise energy was the lowest,at 1.8%. 展开更多

In order to deal with the non-stationary characteristics of blasting vibration signals and the end issue in the empirical mode decomposition(EMD), an improved endpoint continuation method is proposed. First, the linear continuation method of extreme points is used to determine the extremum of the signal endpoint fast. Secondly, the extreme points of transition section outside the signal ends are obtained by a mirror continuation method of extreme points, and then the envelope and continuation curve of the transition section of the signal are constructed. Lastly, the sinusoid of the stationary section outside the signal is constructed to achieve the continuation curve from the transition section to the stationary section. Based on the "singular extreme points" phenomenon of blasting vibration signal, the negative maxima and positive minimum are eliminated, then the maximum and minimum are guaranteed to appear at intervals. Thus, the number of iterations is reduced and the instability of EMD decomposition is improved. The calculation formula of amplitude, cycle and initial phase are given for the transition section and stationary section outside the signal. The endpoint processing effect of the simulated signal and the measured blasting vibration signal show that the improved endpoint continuation method can suppress the signal endpoint effect well. 展开更多

The solution contains arbitrary initial conditions and zero input. For specific analysis, the initial conditions were assumed homogeneous, and the input force was treated as a special process with a particular beam. Two simple cases, step and impulse function responses, were considered respectively. Pressure activity data as an important index of gastrointestinal (GI) motility can be obtained from the wireless radiotelemetry capsule. The Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) method, which is more effective to process non-stationary signal, is proposed to identify the characteristics of GI motility. We decompose the pressure activity data into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), calculate the Hi/bert marginal spectrum and attain the peristalsis characteristics of GI tract. The IMFs represent the peristalses modes of GI tract activity embedded in the pressure data. The time-varying characteristic of the method suggests that the HHT is suitable to accommodate other non-stationary biomedical data analysis. 展开更多

According to the differential equation for transverse displacement function of anisotropic rectangular thin plates in free vibration, a general analytical solution is established. This general solution, composed of the composite solutions of trigonometric function and hyperbolic function, can satisfy the problem of arbitrary boundary conditions along four edges. The algebraic polynomial with double sine series solutions can also satisfy the problem of boundary conditions at four corners. Consequently, this general solution can be used to solve the vibration problem of anisotropic rectangular plates with arbitrary boundaries accurately. The integral constants can be determined by boundary conditions of four edges and four corners. Each natural frequency and vibration mode can be solved by the determinate of coefficient matrix from the homogeneous linear algebraic equations equal to zero. For example, a composite symmetric angle ply laminated plate with four edges clamped has been calculated and discussed. 展开更多

Under the consideration of harmonic fluctuations of initial tension and axially velocity, a nonlinear governing equation for transverse vibration of an axially accelerating string is set up by using the equation of motion for a 3-dimensional deformable body with initial stresses. The Kelvin model is used to describe viscoelastic behaviors of the material. The basis function of the complex-mode Galerkin method for axially accelerating nonlinear strings is constructed by using the modal function of linear moving strings with constant axially transport velocity. By the constructed basis functions, the application of the complex-mode Galerkin method in nonlinear vibration analysis of an axially accelerating viscoelastic string is investigated. In the realization of mechanical structures, achieving stability and balance is a problem commonly encountered by engineers in the field of civil engineering, mechanics, aeronautics, biomechanics and many others. The study of plate behavior is a very sensitive subject because it is part of the structural elements. The study of the dynamic behavior of free vibration structures is done by modal analysis in order to calculate natural frequencies and modal deformations. In this paper, we present the modal analysis of a thin rectangular plate simply supported. The analytical solution of the differential equation is obtained by applying the method of separating the variables. We are talking about the exact solution of the problem to the limit values. However, numerical methods such as the finite element method allow us to approximate these functions with greater accuracy. It is one of the most powerful computational methods for predicting dynamic response in a complex structure subject to arbitrary boundary conditions. The results obtained by MEF through Ansys 15.0 are then compared with those obtained by the analytical method. 展开更多

Predicting the time-varying auto-spectral density of a spacecraft in high-altitude orbits requires an accurate model for the non-stationary random vibration signals with densely spaced modal frequency. The traditional time-varying algorithm limits prediction accuracy, thus affecting a number of operational decisions. To solve this problem, a time-varying auto regressive (TVAR) model based on the process neural network (PNN) and the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is proposed. The time-varying system is tracked on-line by establishing a time-varying parameter model, and then the relevant parameter spectrum is obtained. Firstly, the EMD method is utilized to decompose the signal into several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Then for each IMF, the PNN is established and the time-varying auto-spectral density is obtained. Finally, the time-frequency distribution of the signals can be reconstructed by linear superposition. The simulation and the analytical results from an example demonstrate that this approach possesses simplicity, effectiveness, and feasibility, as well as higher frequency resolution. 展开更多
