Translation studies has undergone three different periods: the traditional philological period, the modem linguistic period and the contemporary cultural period. Ever since the cultural turn, especially after the introduction of deconstruction into translation, traditional translation theories have been greatly affected. The traditional principle like faithfulness to the source text and the writer has been attacked and the translator's subjectivity and creativity have been greatly advocated. Under such circumstances, this paper, however, holds that translation studies should turn to ethics for the messy situation, and translators should be able to identify norms of honor and shame in translation practice. 展开更多

Just as the cliff serves as a demarcation between two different worlds, there seems to the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye the dichotomies between innocence and corruption, children and adults. While these dualisms are projected in the story, they are also deconstructed and the characterization of Holden clearly shows the instability of those dualisms. 展开更多

This paper intends to introduce and explain a deconstructionist approach to translation with the discussion on Walter Benjamin’s The Task of the Translator by Derrida, Paul De Man and Andrew Benjamin as the main theme. Through our discussion, we have come to the conclusion that though deconstructionists approach translation in an attempt to expound their philosophical thinking on language instead of translation theory itself, their ideas might broaden our mind on translation and its related problems. Contextualizing his Foe(1986) in the backdrop of South African post- apartheid, Coetzee manipulates multifarious postmodern narrative ploys to purloin, rewrite and widen the canon Robinson Crusoe. In plural demonstrations of dualistic patterns, this novel emphatically unravels Coetzee's textual subversion of the traditional overarching"western logocentrism"or"metaphysics of presence"via catechizing and debilitating the orthodoxy of the white supremacy as well as the male superiority. This detailed analysis, giving a Derridean reading, purports to anatomize and deconstruct the binary oppositions of Self/ Other,White/Black, and Man/Woman among Cruso, Friday and Susan Barton, and reach Coetzee's veritable concerns: to dissolve the Imperialist hierarchy and hegemony, to waive racial enclosure, and to build a dialogue that open up a real respect and coexistence for both the centered and the marginalized. 展开更多

"Deconstruction",coined by French philosopher Jacques Derrida in the 1960s,attempts to subvert the tradition of Western philosophy with "logo centrism" as its primary target.Deconstruction's concern on binary oppositions inspires the feminists and provides them with the philosophical ground to understand gender inequality and rebel against the classic dualities of Western "phallocentrism".However, the noticeable political orientation of feminism and its firm humanitarian position compose a fundamental disagreement with the negativism and nihilism of deconstructive philosophy. This essay aims to trace the development of Western feminism at the same time identify some of the agreements and conflicts between the two theoretical trends in postmodernism;moreover,it intends to propose an idealistic attitude in the reconstruction of a harmonious society with gender equality and understanding. 展开更多

When normal, Lear can not even distinguish flattery and pat answers from sincerity and true love. While considered as insane, he learns to take care of the wretched and is able to discover the truth in life. The key concept of anti-logo-centrism in deconstructive criticism provokes us to reconsider the boundary between madness and reason, and traditional Western philosophical ideas, thus enabling us to appreciate the despised madness in King Lear from the perspective of philosophy. 展开更多

Deconstruction, advocated by Jacques Derrida, is a critic outlook that indicates the pitfall of the philosophical dichotomy in Western convention, revealing the unreliability of human language and conception. Hawthorne's The Minister's Black Veil, with the obscurity and uncertainty in its disclosure, offers the feasibility for a deconstruction study. The binary oppositions and its deconstruction of the "black veil" in perspective of persona, idea and existence contribute to the void perception and activities of Mr.Hooper, the protagonist as well as the author's literary practice. 展开更多

In recent years, the phenomenon of the middle-aged and old people vying for the venue in the park has been frequently exposed, reflecting the uneven distribution of urban parks and the lack of activity space for urban block parks. That phenomenon also shows that the grouping activity habits of the middle-aged and elderly people have affected the fair use of public resources. Based on the current situation of land use in urban block parks, this study explored the site-constrained design method in combination with behavioral scene theory, and proposed to create more equal opportunities for individuals to share public space by limiting the activity scale of middle-aged and old people. 展开更多

Recently, the intended use and required performance of buildings are rapidly changing with advances in scientific technology and globalization. Furthermore, given the population growth in semi-developed and developing countries, economic growth, increasing waste, and increasing amounts of energy consumption, the industry requires the development of efficient methods to deconstruct old buildings by reducing waste and saving as much energy as possible during periods of urban redevelopment and maintenance. In general, either an ordinary breaker or a hydraulic breaker is used to deconstruct reinforced concrete buildings. This deconstruction method has the ability to shorten the construction period compared to the other methods, but it is difficult to separate the debris that gets mixed when the deconstruction is completed, as it is a rough construction method that uses large equipment. This study develops a technology that can be used to selectively heat, separate, and deconstruct the steel reinforcement inside reinforced concrete, treating the reinforcement as a conductive resistor and applying high-frequency induction heating to the reinforced concrete structure. Specifically, this study verifies the temperature characteristics of deformed bars inside reinforced concrete, the occurrence of cracks due to thermal fracture of the deformed bars, and chemical and physical weakening of concrete by thermal conduction on the surface of steel reinforcement using the high-frequency induction heating technology. Furthermore, this study considers the extent of concrete weakening in the heating range of appropriate energy and carries out a technical review of the stages that would be actually applied. This technology involves low noise and low pollution levels, and it increases the collection rate of steel reinforcement inside separated reinforced concrete members and the recycling rate of construction wastes;thus, its use is expected to reduce the energy consumption by minimizing secondary processing. 展开更多

The relation between imagination and reality is a major theme of his poems. He holds the view that the mission of poets is to build a bridge linking the world of imagination and of reality with the result of deconstructing the logic of binary opposition since the time of Plato. Thirteen Ways of Looking at A Blackbird is a representative poem that expresses Wallace’s thoughts of deconstruction. This article is to probe into how the poet establishes the reality dominated by imagination and then how he deconstructs the binary opposition between imagination and reality since the time of Plato. 展开更多

A Passage to India is a representative novel by E. M. Forster. His insightful exploration of the relationship between Britain and the colony India in early 20th century guarantees it a seat among the classics of the world’s colonist literature. E. M. Forster’s ideas in A Passage to India exhibit many affinities with Edward Said’s thoughts in his Orientalism. This paper, therefore, aims to offer an interpretation of A Passage to India by using Said’s philosophy of the Orientalism as the theoretical framework. Due to Forster’s dual consciousness revealed in the novel, this paper will focus on two aspects, namely, the reflection of his colonialist ideology and his anti-colonial humanistic sense. 展开更多

Kabbalah Logic and Semantic Foundations for a Postmodern Fuzzy Set and Fuzzy Logic Theory

Despite half a century of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic progress, as fuzzy sets address complex and uncertain information through the lens of human knowledge and subjectivity, more progress is needed in the semantics of fuzzy sets and in exploring the multi-modal aspect of fuzzy logic due to the different cognitive, emotional and behavioral angles of assessing truth. We lay here the foundations of a postmodern fuzzy set and fuzzy logic theory addressing these issues by deconstructing fuzzy truth values and fuzzy set membership functions to re-capture the human knowledge and subjectivity structure in membership function evaluations. We formulate a fractal multi-modal logic of Kabbalah which integrates the cognitive, emotional and behavioral levels of humanistic systems into epistemic and modal, deontic and doxastic and dynamic multi-modal logic. This is done by creating a fractal multi-modal Kabbalah possible worlds semantic frame of Kripke model type. The Kabbalah possible worlds semantic frame integrates together both the multi-modal logic aspects and their Kripke possible worlds model. We will not focus here on modal operators and axiom sets. We constructively define a fractal multi-modal Kabbalistic L-fuzzy set as the central concept of the postmodern fuzzy set theory based on Kabbalah logic and semantics. 展开更多

This paper focuses on Stephen King's (1947-) long-form narratives and attempts at perceiving the elements accounting for his endless success. As the author chooses this title for her paper, she clearly keep in mind John Barth's (1930-) essay. The choice of "punning" Barth's title is made so as to situate ourselves in the wake of postmodernist studies to try and analyze King's deconstruction and reconstruction of common ideas, myths, and the Gothic genre, applying them to the contemporary era. The choice of this angle of study is accounted by the fact that the aim is to prove that King has not literarily exhausted himself in spite of his 37 years of writing and is in a constant quest for a renewal of the Gothic genre. The notion of remolding is one of the red threads allowing to weave the intricate cloth of postmodernism. The author will here humbly try to unveil the essential elements perceived in King's narratives which allow to qualify him as "a postmodern writer". 展开更多

With the announcement of the sheep clone Dolly as the breakthrough in the biotechnology in news media around the turn of the twenty-first century, the rising issue of human clones in its development and the controversially bioethical issues ensued, Kazuo Ishiguro in Never Let Me Go (2005) focuses his attention, in the area of cell therapy, on how human clones, since produced, lead their model lives and face their deaths, in order that his readers may better understand the meanings of life and death, and that they may stay in a far closer relationship with their family and friends than ever. In this essay, I examine, in two worlds, the normals' and the clones', paralleling each other, the true meanings of being human and their lives through the perspective of Jacques Derrida's deconstruction; and I argue that Ishiguro misspeaks to his readers the true meanings of life and death especially through the clones' perspective and brings them to his readers' hearts further realistically. In Derrida's nature-culture structurality of the clones, it is Kathy H. who comes as center into which the other clones come as freeplay in the structurality of the real world, where it is normals who come as center into which clones come as freeplay under the structurality of power in the institutions where the clones' culture comes as center into which Miss Emily's ruling comes as freeplay by the structurality of authorship where the author comes as center into which the novel comes as freeplay. 展开更多
