As petroleum exploration advances and as most of the oil-gas reservoirs in shallow layers have been explored, petroleum exploration starts to move toward deep basins, which has become an inevitable choice. In this paper, the petroleum geology features and research progress on oil-gas reservoirs in deep petroliferous basins across the world are characterized by using the latest results of worldwide deep petroleum exploration. Research has demonstrated that the deep petroleum shows ten major geological features. (1) While oil-gas reservoirs have been discovered in many different types of deep petroliferous basins, most have been discovered in low heat flux deep basins. (2) Many types of petroliferous traps are developed in deep basins, and tight oil-gas reservoirs in deep basin traps are arousing increasing attention. (3) Deep petroleum normally has more natural gas than liquid oil, and the natural gas ratio increases with the burial depth. (4) The residual organic matter in deep source rocks reduces but the hydrocarbon expulsion rate and efficiency increase with the burial depth. (5) There are many types of rocks in deep hydrocarbon reservoirs, and most are clastic rocks and carbonates. (6) The age of deep hydrocarbon reservoirs is widely different, but those recently discovered are pre- dominantly Paleogene and Upper Paleozoic. (7) The porosity and permeability of deep hydrocarbon reservoirs differ widely, but they vary in a regular way with lithology and burial depth. (8) The temperatures of deep oil-gas reservoirs are widely different, but they typically vary with the burial depth and basin geothermal gradient. (9) The pressures of deep oil-gas reservoirs differ significantly, but they typically vary with burial depth, genesis, and evolu- tion period. (10) Deep oil-gas reservoirs may exist with or without a cap, and those without a cap are typically of unconventional genesis. Over the past decade, six major steps have been made in the understanding of deep hydrocarbon reservoir formation. (1) Deep petroleum in petroliferous basins has multiple sources and many dif- ferent genetic mechanisms. (2) There are high-porosity, high-permeability reservoirs in deep basins, the formation of which is associated with tectonic events and subsurface fluid movement. (3) Capillary pressure differences inside and outside the target reservoir are the principal driving force of hydrocarbon enrichment in deep basins. (4) There are three dynamic boundaries for deep oil-gas reservoirs; a buoyancy-controlled threshold, hydrocarbon accumulation limits, and the upper limit of hydrocarbon generation. (5) The formation and distribution of deep hydrocarbon res- ervoirs are controlled by free, limited, and bound fluid dynamic fields. And (6) tight conventional, tight deep, tight superimposed, and related reconstructed hydrocarbon reservoirs formed in deep-limited fluid dynamic fields have great resource potential and vast scope for exploration. Compared with middle-shallow strata, the petroleum geology and accumulation in deep basins are more complex, which overlap the feature of basin evolution in different stages. We recommend that further study should pay more attention to four aspects: (1) identification of deep petroleum sources and evaluation of their relative contributions; (2) preservation conditions and genetic mechanisms of deep high-quality reservoirs with high permeability and high porosity; (3) facies feature and transformation of deep petroleum and their potential distribution; and (4) economic feasibility evaluation of deep tight petroleum exploration and development. 展开更多

The fields of structural geology and tectonics have witnessed great progress over the last decade and are poised for further expansion in the future. One of the significant breakthroughs is the establishment of the 'Beyond Plate Tectonics Theory' where a combination of conceptual models and numerical modeling on plume tectonics and plate tectonics has enabled new insights into the structural and tectonic architecture and processes in the deep interior and deep sea. This paper synthesizes developments of structural geology and tectonics from a macroscopic perspective in deep interior and deep sea. Four key techniques are also reviewed: satellite altimetry for surface structures in deep-sea multi-beam sea-floor mapping; tomography for tectonics of the deep interior; diverse modeling approaches and software for unfolding dynamic evolution; and techniques for HT/HP experiments on material rheology and in situ component measurements. 展开更多

Compacted bentonite-sand(B/S)mixtures have been used as a barrier material in engineered barrier systems(EBSs)of deep geological repositories(DGR)to store nuclear wastes. This study investigates the individual and combined effects of different chemical compositions of deep groundwaters(chemical factor)at potential repository sites in Canada(the Trenton and Guelph regions in Ontario),heat generated in DGRs(thermal factor),dry densities and mass ratios of bentonite and sand mixtures(physical factors)on the swelling behavior and ability of bentonite-based materials. In this study, swelling tests are conducted on B/S mixtures with different B/S mix ratios(20/80 to 70/30),compacted at different dry densities(ρd=1.6-2 g/cm^(3)),saturated with different types of water(distilled water and simulated deep groundwater of Trenton and Guelph)and exposed to different temperatures(20℃-80℃).Moreover,scanning electron microscopy(SEM)analyses, mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP)tests and X-ray diffractometry(XRD)analyses are carried out to evaluate the morphological, microstructural and mineralogical characteristics of the B/S mixtures. The test results indicate that the swelling potential of the B/S mixtures is significantly affected by these physical and chemical factors as well as the combined effects of the chemical and thermal factors.A significant decrease in the swelling capacity is observed when the B/S materials are exposed to the aforementioned groundwaters.A large decrease in the swelling capacity is observed for higher bentonite content in the mixtures. Moreover, higher temperatures intensify the chemically-induced reduction of the swelling capacity of the B/S barrier materials. This decrease in the swelling capacity is caused by the chemical and/or microstructural changes of the materials. The results from this research will help engineers to design and build EBSs for DGRs with similar groundwater and thermal conditions. 展开更多

For the sake of mine water drainage and sustainable groundwater protection, the new approach of mine water deep geological storage(MWDGS)is highly necessary to save water resources in the semi-arid region of China. However,up to now, little academic research has been done on mine water geological storage.Given this situation, the hydrogeological feasibility of MWDGS was explored in Baotashan coarse sandstone(BCS)of Jurassic measure in Ordos Basin. The results show that the white-gray BCS with a fragile skeleton of quartz(41.4%),feldspar(21.1%),and clay minerals(16.4%)provides the potential variable-void for mine water;and its hydro-chemical type of BCS aquifer is CO_(3)-Na and Cl-Na.As the burial depth increases, the strong alkaline groundwater is in stagnant and poor recharge-runoff-discharge condition. The lab test shows that the pores whose diameter is over 10μm could be treated as the main storage of mine water;and the effective porosity varies from 1.36%to 3.46%.When mine water is injected, the strong hydrodynamics of mine water storage would change the permeability significantly and about 0.201%soluble solids would be dissolved.Partial clay minerals obstruct the pores and induce the saturated phase of high permeability to evolve into steady phase of lower permeability.Under the condition of nonhydraulic fracturing during continuous storage, the heterogeneous anisotropic medium obtained by Transition PRObability GeoStatistics(TPROGS)shows that the capacity of BCS aquifer is 0.455 to 1.226Mm^(3)for 1 km^(2)in the study area. The simulation shows that the groundwater mound in well-scale and mine-scale would be formed. The groundwater quality characteristics of“Three Zone”would occur around and gradually drop to approximate the original brine within 10 years. The hydrogeological feasibility reveals that this approach is useful for the well design and groundwater environment management during the mine water deep geological storage project in the Ordos basin. 展开更多

In the context of repositories for nuclear waste, understanding the behavior of gas migration through clayey rocks with inherent anisotropy is crucial for assessing the safety of geological disposal facilities. The primary mechanism for gas breakthrough is the opening of micro-fractures due to high gas pressure. This occurs at gas pressures lower than the combined strength of the rock and its minimum principal stress under external loading conditions. To investigate the mechanism of microscale mode-I ruptures,it is essential to incorporate a multiscale approach that includes subcritical microcracks in the modeling framework. In this contribution,we derive the model from microstructures that contain periodically distributed microcracks within a porous material. The damage evolution law is coupled with the macroscopic poroelastic system by employing the asymptotic homogenization method and considering the inherent hydro-mechanical(HM)anisotropy at the microscale. The resulting permeability change induced by fracture opening is implicitly integrated into the gas flow equation.Verification examples are presented to validate the developed model step by step.An analysis of local macroscopic response is undertaken to underscore the influence of factors such as strain rate, initial damage, and applied stress,on the gas migration process.Numerical examples of direct tension tests are used to demonstrate the model’s efficacy in describing localized failure characteristics. Finally, the simulation results for preferential gas flow reveal the robustness of the two-scale model in explicitly depicting gas-induced fracturing in anisotropic clayey rocks. The model successfully captures the common behaviors observed in laboratory experiments, such as a sudden drop in gas injection pressure, rapid build-up of downstream gas pressure, and steady-state gas flow following gas breakthrough. 展开更多

In the high-level radioactive waste(HLW)deep geological repository, bentonite is compacted uniaxially, and then arranged vertically in engineered barriers. The assembly scheme induces the initial anisotropy, and with hydration,it develops more evidently under chemical conditions. To investigate the anisotropic swelling of compacted Gaomiaozi(GMZ)bentonite and the further response to saline effects,a series of constant-volume swelling pressure tests were performed. Results showed that dry density enhanced the bentonite swelling and raised the final anisotropy, whereas saline inhibited the bentonite swelling but still promoted the final anisotropy. The final anisotropy coefficient(ratio of radial to axial pressure)obeyed the Boltzmann sigmoid attenuation function, decreasing with concentration and dry density, converging to a minimum value of 0.76.The staged evolution of anisotropy coefficient was discovered, that saline inhibited the rise of the anisotropy coefficient(Dd)in the isotropic process greater than the valley(d1)in the anisotropic process, leading to the final anisotropy increasing. The isotropic stage amplified the impact of soil structure rearrangement on the macro-swelling pressure values. Thus,a new method for predicting swelling pressures of compacted bentonite was proposed,by expanding the equations of Gouy-Chapman theory with a dissipative wedge term.An evolutionary function was constructed, revealing the correlation between the occurrence time and the pressure value due to the structure rearrangement and the former crystalline swelling.Accordingly,a design reference for dry density was given, based on the chemical conditions around the pre-site in Beishan,China. The anisotropy promoted by saline would cause a greater drop of radial pressure, making the previous threshold on axial swelling fail. 展开更多

During the construction of an underground excavation, damage occurs in the surrounding rock mass due in large part to stress changes. While the predicted damage extent impacts profile selection and support design, the depth of damage is a critical aspect for the design of permeability sensitive excavations, such as a deep geological repository(DGR) for nuclear waste. Review of literature regarding the depth of excavation damage zones(EDZs) indicates three zones are common and typically related to stress induced damage. Based on past developments related to brittle damage prediction using continuum modelling, the depth of the EDZs has been examined numerically. One method to capture stress induced damage in conventional engineering software is the damage initiation and spalling limit(DISL) approach. The variability of depths predicted using the DISL approach has been evaluated and guidelines are suggested for determining the depth of the EDZs around circular excavations in brittle rock masses. Of the inputs evaluated, it was found that the tensile strength produces the greatest variation in the depth of the EDZs. The results were evaluated statistically to determine the best fit relation between the model inputs and the depth of the EDZs. The best correlation and least variation were found for the outer EDZ and the highly damaged zone(HDZ) showed the greatest variation. Predictive equations for different EDZs have been suggested and the maximum numerical EDZ depths, represented by the 68% prediction interval, agreed well with the empirical evidence. This suggests that the numerical limits can be used for preliminary depth prediction of the EDZs in brittle rock for circular excavations. 展开更多

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission(CNSC), Canada’s nuclear regulator, conducts regulatory research in order to develop independent knowledge on safety aspects related to the deep geological disposal of radioactive wastes. In Canada, the Cobourg limestone of the Michigan Basin is currently considered as a potential host formation for geological disposal. The understanding of the hydromechanical behavior of such a host rock is one of the essential requirements for the assessment of its performance as a barrier against radionuclide migration. The excavation of galleries and shafts of a deep geological repository(DGR) can induce damage to the surrounding rock. The excavation damaged zone(EDZ) has higher permeability and reduced strength compared to the undisturbed rock and those factors must be considered in the design and safety assessment of the DGR. The extent and characteristics of the EDZ depend on the size of the opening, the rock type and its properties, and the in situ stresses, among other factors. In addition, the extent and characteristics of the EDZ can change with time due to rock strength degradation, evolution of fractures within the EDZ, and the redistribution of pore pressure around the excavation. In this research project initiated by the CNSC, the authors conducted experimental and theoretical research in order to assess the hydro-mechanical behavior of the Cobourg limestone under undamaged and damaged conditions, both in the short and long terms. The short-term behavior was investigated by a program of triaxial tests with the measurement of permeability evolution on specimens of Cobourg limestone. The authors formulate a coupled hydro-mechanical model to simulate the stress-strain response and evolution of the permeability during those triaxial tests. Using creep and relaxation data from a similar limestone, the model was extended to include its long-term strength degradation. The model successfully simulated both the short-and long-term hydro-mechanical behavior of the limestone during those tests. This provides confidence that the main physical processes have been adequately understood and formulated. 展开更多

Repositories for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste rely on multi-barrier systems to isolate waste from the biosphere.A multi-barrier system typically comprises the natural geological barrier provided by the repository host rock e in our case the Opalinus Clay e and an engineered barrier system(EBS).The Swiss repository concept for spent fuel and vitrified high-level waste(HLW)consists of waste canisters, which are emplaced horizontally in the middle of an emplacement gallery and are separated from the gallery wall by granular backfill material(GBM).We describe here a selection of five in-situ experiments where characteristic hydro-mechanical(HM)and thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM)processes have been observed. The first example is a coupled HM and mine-by test where the evolution of the excavation damaged zone(EDZ)was monitored around a gallery in the Opalinus Clay(ED-B experiment).Measurements of pore-water pressures and convergences due to stress redistribution during excavation highlighted the HM behaviour. The same measurements were subsequently carried out in a heater test(HE-D)where we were able to characterise the Opalinus Clay in terms of its THM behaviour. These yielded detailed data to better understand the THM behaviours of the granular backfill and the natural host rock. For a presentation of the Swiss concept for HLW storage,we designed three demonstration experiments that were subsequently implemented in the Mont Terri rock laboratory:(1)the engineered barrier(EB)experiment,(2)the in-situ heater test on key-THM processes and parameters(HE-E)experiment,and(3)the full-scale emplacement(FE)experiment. The first demonstration experiment has been dismantled, but the last two ones are on-going. 展开更多

A methodology for identifying and calibrating the material parameters for a coupled hydro-mechanical problem is presented in this pape r.For validation purpose,a laboratory-based water infiltration test was numerically simulated using finite element method(FEM).The test was conducted using a self-designed column-type experimental device, which mimicked the wetting process of a candidate backfill material in a nuclear waste repository. The real-time measurements of key state variables(e.g.water content, relative humidity, temperature, and total stresses)were performed with the monitoring sensors along the height of cylindrical soil sample. For numerical simulation, the modified Barcelona Basic Model(BBM)along with soil-water retention model for compacted bentonite was used.It shows that the identified model parameters successfully captured the moisture migration process under an applied hydraulic gradient in a bentonite-based compacted soil sample.A comparison between the measured and predicted values of total stresses both in axial and lateral directions along with other state variables revealed that heterogeneous moisture content was distributed along the hydration-path,resulting in non-uniform stress-deformation characteristics of soil. 展开更多

Bentonite has been considered as a buffer material for embedding canisters with high-level radioactive waste(HLW) in deep geological repositories.GMZ bentonite deposit, located in Xinghe County,Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region,China was proposed as a buffer/backfill material for HLW repository in China. The liquid limits of natural Na-bentonite GMZ01 and commercial Na-bentonite MX80,which are previously heated at 80 ℃ and 95 ℃,respectively, and exposed to water for different times are measured. It is observed that the liquid limit of GMZ01 increases slightly at the beginning, and then decreases as the heating time increases, while the liquid limit of MX80 decreases with the heating time. The liquid limits of both GMZ01 and MX80 decrease with increasing water-exposure time. After the samples are heated at 80℃and 95 ℃ for several months, the mineralogical composition of GMZ01 does not exhibit evident change, whereas MX80 experiences some changes. In addition, the chemical composition, cation exchange capacity(CEC) and exchangeable cation of all the samples do not change significantly. 展开更多

Based on the latest geological, seismic, drilling and outcrop data,we studied the geological structure, tectonic evolution history and deformation process of the southwestern Sichuan fold-thrust belt to find out the potential hydrocarbon exploration areas in deep layers.During key tectonic periods, the southwestern Sichuan fold-thrust belt developed some characteristic strata and structural deformation features, including the Pre-Sinian multi-row N-S strike rifts,step-shaped platform-margin structures of Sinian Dengying Formation, the western paleo-uplift in the early stage of Late Paleozoic, the Late Paleozoic–Middle Triassic carbonate platform, foreland slope and forebulge during Late Triassic to Cretaceous, and Cenozoic multi-strike rejuvenated fold-thrusting structures. The fold-thrust belt vertically shows a double-layer structural deformation controlled by the salt layer in the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation and the base detachment layer at present. The upper deformation layer develops the NE-SW strike thrusts propagating toward basin in long distance, while the deeper deformation layer had near north-south strike basement-involved folds, which deformed the detachment and thrusting structures formed earlier in the upper layer, with the deformation strength high in south part and weak in north part. The southern part of the fold-thrust belt is characterized by basement-involved fold-thrusts formed late, while the central-northern part is dominated by thin-skin thrusts in the shallow layer. The Wuzhongshan anticlinal belt near piedmont is characterized by over-thrust structure above the salt detachment, where the upper over-thrusting nappe consists of a complicated fold core and front limb of a fault-bend fold, while the deep layer has stable subtle in-situ structures.Favorable exploration strata and areas have been identified both in the upper and deeper deformation layers separated by regional salt detachment, wherein multiple anticlinal structures are targets for exploration.Other potential exploration strata and areas in southwestern Sichuan fold-thrust belt include the deep Sinian and Permian in the Wuzhongshan structure,pre-Sinian rifting sequences and related structures,platform-margin belt of Sinian Dengying Formation, and Indosinian paleo-uplift in the east of the Longquanshan structure. 展开更多

The corrosion behavior of NiCu low alloy steel and Q235 low carbon steel as the candidate materials for geological disposal containers of high-level radioactive waste in the simulated Beishan groundwater was comparatively studied by weight loss test, electrochemical measurements, scanning electron microscope(SEM),electron probe microanalysis(EPMA),X-ray diffraction(XRD),Raman spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The electrochemical results showed that the corrosion potential of NiCu steel and Q235 steel gradually increased with the immersion time.Simultaneously, the cathodic process transited from hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) control to the rust reduction control, while the anodic process was always dominated by the active dissolution of iron.By comparison, both the cathodic resistance and the anodic dissolution resistance of NiCu steel corrosion were apparently higher than that of Q235 steel. The results of rust layer characterization indicated that Ni and Cu elements could be enriched in the inner rust layer of NiCu steel and the rust layer was more compact. As the main corrosion products, the content of α-FeOOH in the rust layer of NiCu steel was obviously increased more than that of Q235 steel.Fe_(6)(OH)_(12)SO_(4)stably existed in the corrosion products of NiCu steel because Ni(Ⅱ) or Cu(Ⅱ)could substitute Fe(Ⅱ) of Fe_(6)(OH)_(12)SO_(4)and increased its oxidation resistance,Moreover,Ni and Cu could also make Fe3O4ionic selective by doping. After the long-term immersion, the corrosion mass loss of NiCu steel was significantly lower than Q235 steel, which further confirmed the benefits of Ni and Cu alloying on improving the steel corrosion resistance. 展开更多
