The participants in this study were 32 intermediate senior students of Shiraz Azad University majoring in English translation. The Word Associates Test (WAT) (Read, 1993) was used to measure their depth of vocabulary knowledge and lexical inferencing strategy questionnaire which was part of Schmitt (1997), vocabulary learning strategies as well as a reading passage (Haastrup, 1999), cited in Nassaji (2004), were used to determine their lexical inferencing strategy use and success. Results indicate that: (1) Those who have stronger depth of vocabulary knowledge use certain strategies more frequently than those who have weaker depth of vocabulary knowledge; (2) The students with stronger depth of vocabulary knowledge make more effective use of certain types of lexical inferencing strategies. These findings support the importance of depth dimension of vocabulary knowledge and the role it plays in guessing the meaning of unknown words.展开更多

However, vocabulary development in the depth is not so reinforced, including the introduction of the social and cultural background of the words, use in the context, etc. Therefore, many learners can't avoid encountering the difficulty to bridge the gap between vocabulary learning and vocabulary application. This paper, which is based on the theory of language cognition, holds that vocabulary teaching and learning in the depth is of equal importance in language education. What's more, some vocabulary teaching method, focused on improving non-English-majored college learners' vocabulary, is put forward for reference.展开更多

Starting from the construct of vocabulary, which includes definitions of word and lexical item, and the connotations of knowing a word, it then reviews mainstream methods for the assessment of vocabulary, featured by the studies in the testing of vocabulary breadth and depth. After pointing out the problems and issues in the assessment of vocabulary, it proposes some suggestions which intend to shed some light to the future development of vocabulary testing.展开更多
