Ragahama Formation comprises a siliciclastic continental deposits followed by marine carbonates, representing prograding alluvial fans from adjacent high hinterlands seaward into lagoons and fringing reef environments. The present work aimed to document the facies development and sedimentology of the Raghama carbonates exposed along the eastern coastal plain of the Red Sea, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Four stratigraphic sections were measured and sampled(D1–D4) and thin sections and major and trace element analyses were prepared and applied for petrographic and geochemical approaches. The carbonates were subdivided into three successive fore-reef, reef-core, and back-reef depositional facies. Sandy stromatolitic boundstone, microbial laminites, dolomitic ooidal grainstone, bioclastic coralline algal wackestone, sandy bioclastic wackestone, and coral boundstones were the reported microfacies types. Petrographic analysis reveals that the studied carbonates were affected by dissolution, dolomitization, and aggrading recrystallization, which affects both the original micrite matrix and grains or acts as fracture and veinlet filling leading to widespread vuggy and moldic porosity. No evidence of physical compaction, suggesting rapid lithification and recrystallization during early diagenesis and prior to substantial burial and intensive flushing by meteoric waters. Most of the original microstructure of corals were leached and destructed. This is indicated by the higher depletion in Sr and Ca levels and increase in Mg,Na, Fe, and Mn levels, especially in section D1, in comparison with the worldwide carbonates. 展开更多

The Oligocene Zhuhai sandstones are significant reservoirs for hydrocarbons in the Baiyun Sag, South China Sea.For effective appraisal, exploration and exploitation of such a deep-water hydrocarbon sandstone, samples of five wells from depths of 850 m to 3 000 m were studied. A series of comprehensive petrographic and geochemical analyses were performed to unravel the diagenetic features and their impact on the reservoir quality.Petrographically, the sandstones are dominated by feldspathic litharenites and lithic arenites with fine to medium grain sizes and moderate to good sorting. The reservoir quality varies greatly with a range of porosity from 0.2% to 36.1% and permeability from 0.016 ×10~(–3) μm~2 to 4 301 ×10~(–3) μm~2, which is attributed to complex diagenetic evolution related to sedimentary facies;these include compaction, cementation of calcite, dolomite, siderite and framboidal pyrite in eogenetic stage;further compaction, feldspar dissolution, precipitation of ferrocalcite and ankerite, quartz cements, formation of kaolinite and its illitization, precipitation of albite and nodular pyrite, as well as hydrocarbon charge in mesogenetic stage. The dissolution of feldspar and illitization of kaolinite provide internal sources for the precipitation of quartz cement, while carbonate cements are derived from external sources related to interbedded mudstones and deep fluid. Compaction is the predominant factor in reducing the total porosity, followed by carbonate cementation that leads to strong heterogeneity. Feldspar dissolution and concomitant quartz and clay cementation barely changes the porosity but significantly reduces the permeability. The high-quality reservoirs can be concluded as medium-grained sandstones lying in the central parts of thick underwater distributary channel sandbodies(>2 m) with a high content of detrital quartz but low cement. 展开更多

Thin section and argon-ion polishing scanning electron microscope observations were used to analyze the sedimentary and diagenetic environments and main diagenesis of the Permian Fengcheng Formation shales in different depositional zones of Mahu Sag in the Junggar Basin, and to reconstruct their differential diagenetic evolutional processes. The diagenetic environment of shales in the lake-central zone kept alkaline, which mainly underwent the early stage(Ro<0.5%)dominated by the authigenesis of Na-carbonates and K-feldspar and the late stage(Ro>0.5%)dominated by the replacement of Na-carbonates by reedmergnerite. The shales from the marginal zone underwent a transition from weak alkaline to acidic diagenetic environments, with the early stage dominated by the authigenesis of Mg-bearing clay and silica and the late stage dominated by the dissolution of feldspar and carbonate minerals. The shales from the transitional zone also underwent a transition from an early alkaline diagenetic environment, evidenced by the formation of dolomite and zeolite,to a late acidic diagenetic environment, represented by the reedmergnerite replacement and silicification of feldspar and carbonate minerals. The differences in formation of authigenic minerals during early diagenetic stage determine the fracability of shales. The differences in dissolution of minerals during late diagenetic stage control the content of free shale oil.Dolomitic shale in the transitional zone and siltstone in the marginal zone have relatively high content of free shale oil and strong fracability, and are favorable“sweet spots”for shale oil exploitation and development. 展开更多

Based on the study of the distribution of intra-platform shoals and the characteristics of dolomite reservoirs in the Middle Permian Qixia Formation in the Gaoshiti–Moxi area of the Sichuan Basin,SW China, the controlling factors of reservoir development were analyzed, and the formation model of“intra-platform shoal thin-layer dolomite reservoir”was established. The Qixia Formation is a regressive cycle from bottom to top,in which the first member(Qi1 Member)develops low-energy open sea microfacies, and the second member(Qi2 Member)evolves into intra-platform shoal and inter-shoal sea with decreases in sea level. The intra-platform shoal is mainly distributed near the top of two secondary shallowing cycles of the Qi2 Member. The most important reservoir rock of the Qixia Formation is thin-layer fractured-vuggy dolomite, followed by vuggy dolomite. The semi-filled saddle dolomite is common in fracture-vug,and intercrystalline pores and residual dissolution pores combined with fractures to form the effective pore-fracture network.Based on the coupling analysis of sedimentary and diagenesis characteristics, the reservoir formation model of“pre-depositional micro-paleogeomorphology controlling shoal, sedimentary shoal controlling dolomite, penecontemporaneous dolomite benefiting preservation of pores, and late hydrothermal action effectively improving reservoir quality”was systematically established.The“first-order high zone”micro-paleogeomorphology before the deposition of the Qixia Formation controlled the development of large area of intra-platform shoals in Gaoshiti area during the deposition of the Qi2 Member.Shoal facies is the basic condition of early dolomitization, and the distribution range of intra-platform shoal and dolomite reservoir is highly consistent. The grain limestone of shoal facies is transformed by two stages of dolomitization. The penecontemporaneous dolomitization is conducive to the preservation of primary pores and secondary dissolved pores. The burial hydrothermal fluid enters the early dolomite body along the fractures associated with the Emeishan basalt event, makes it recrystallized into medium–coarse crystal dolomite. With the intercrystalline pores and the residual vugs after the hydrothermal dissolution along the fractures, the high-quality intra-platform shoal-type thin-layer dolomite reservoirs are formed. The establishment of this reservoir formation model can provide important theoretical support for the sustainable development of Permian gas reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin. 展开更多

The Asmari Formation Oligo-Miocene in age is one of the most important reservoir rocks in SW Iran and Zagros basin and composed of carbonate rocks and locally sandstones and evaporates. In this research, reservoir quality controlling factors have been investigated in a well in one of the oil fields in Dezful Embayment, SW Iran. Based on this research, depositional environment, diagenesis and fracturing have been affected on reservoir quality. 3 distinct depositional settings can be recognized in the studied interval including tidal flat, lagoon, and shoal. Among these depositional setting, shoal environment with ooid grainstone microfacies along with interparticle porosity shows good reservoir characteristics. Diagenetic processes also play an important role on reservoir quality;dolomitization and dissolution have positive effects on porosity and enhances reservoir quality, while cementation, anhydritization and compaction have negative effect on it. Fracturing is another important factor affected on the carbonate reservoirs especially in the Asmari Formation. 展开更多

In order to clarify the reservoir characteristics and main controlling factors of the flow three section of the K oil field in the Weixinan Depression, a study on the reservoir characteristics and main controlling factors of the flow three section of the K oil field in the Weixinan Depression has been carried out by utilizing the data of cores, casting thin sections, physical property tests and logging wells. The results show that the lithology of the reservoir in the flow three section of the study area is dominated by coarse sandstone and medium sandstone, followed by conglomerate-bearing sandstone and sand conglomerate. The porosity is mainly distributed in the range of medium-high porosity, and the permeability is mainly medium seepage, and the overall physical properties are good. The three sections of the stream in the study area mainly include four sedimentary microphases, namely, underwater diversion channel, estuarine dam, mat sand and inter-diversion bay. The underwater diversion channel has the best physical properties, characterized by coarse grains and low mud content. The medium and coarse sand content of various lithologic reservoirs is the main factor in the formation of high-quality reservoirs. Rock-forming action is an important factor affecting the physical properties of local reservoirs, comparing the compaction, cementation and dissolution between different sedimentary microphases, the underwater diverging river has the lowest rate of compaction and pore reduction, the highest rate of pore increase by dissolution, and the best physical properties. Therefore, the weakly cemented-strongly dissolved coarse sandstone phase developed in the microphase of the underwater diversion channel in section 3 of the flow in the study area is the most favorable reservoir. 展开更多

Dissolution mechanism and favorable reservoir distribution prediction are the key problems restricting oil and gas exploration in deep-buried layers. In this paper, the Enping Formation and Zhuhai Formation in Baiyun Sag of South China Sea was taken as a target.Based on the thin section, scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction,porosity/permeability measurement, and mercury injection, influencing factors of dissolution were examined, and a dissolution model was established.Further,high-quality reservoirs were predicted temporally and spatially. The results show that dissolved pores constituted the main space of the Paleogene sandstone reservoir.Dissolution primarily occurred in the coarse-and medium-grained sandstones in the subaerial and subaqueous distributary channels, while dissolution was limited in fine-grained sandstones and inequigranular sandstones. The main dissolved minerals were feldspar, tuffaceous matrix, and diagenetic cement.Kaolinization of feldspar and illitization of kaolinite are the main dissolution pathways, but they occur at various depths and temperatures with different geothermal gradients.Dissolution is controlled by four factors,in terms of depositional facies, source rock evolution, overpressure, and fault activities, which co-acted at the period of 23.8–13.8 Ma,and resulted into strong dissolution.Additionally, based on these factors,high-quality reservoirs of the Enping and Zhuhai formations are predicted in the northern slope, southwestern step zone, and Liuhua uplift in the Baiyun Sag. 展开更多

An integrated geological-petrophysical analysis of the rudist-bearing sequence of the Cretaceous Sarvak Formation is given one giant oilfield, and provides an improved understanding of this main reservoir in the Abadan Plain,in the Zagros Basin,SW Iran. The main objective of this study is to evaluate reservoir potential of the Sarvak Formation, and then to utilize the calibrated well log signature to correlate reservoir potential in un-cored wells.Eight main facies are recognized and categorized in five facies groups:lagoon,shoal,rudist-biostrome,slope,and shallow open marine, deposited on a shelf carbonate platform.Given the distribution of diagenetic products and their effects on pore systems, three diagenetic facies namely,(DF-1)low dissolution and cementation;(DF-2);high dissolution;and(DF-3)high cementation are differentiated. The initial sedimentary characteristics in combination with distribution of diagenetic products play an important role in reservoir quality heterogeneity. The effect of diagenetic processes related to disconformities mainly depends on the facies nature below these surfaces.Grain-dominated facies of shoal and rudist debris, observed below the Cenomanian–Turonian disconformity, are mostly characterized by high dissolution and interconnected pore systems. Finally, depositional and diagenetic facies in the studied wells are correlated by petrophysical well log data, leading to distribution of the reservoir zones.Data obtained can be utilized for efficient reservoir characterization of the Sarvak Formation and its equivalent units in the Arabian Plate. 展开更多

We investigated diagenesis of the sandstones from the DN2 Gas Field of the Kuqa Foreland Basin(KFB),in order to infer the timing of fluid migration and discuss the linkage between fluids and tectonics. The textures and chemical composition of authigenic minerals, fluid evidence from fluid inclusions and formation water measurements were all used to fulfill this aim.Eodiagenesis occurred with the participation of meteoric water and connate water.Mesodiagenesis is related to high salinity fluids, which were attributed as originating from the overlying Neogene Jidike Formation evaporite(principal minerals including halite, anhydrite, glauberite, carnallite and thenardite). The onset of high salinity fluid migration is inferred to occur during the late Miocene(12.4-9.2 Ma)through the use of homogenization temperatures measured in the present study and K-Ar dating of authigenetic illites from previous work. This period is consistent with the crucial phase(13-10 Ma)that witnessed the rapid uplift of the southern Tianshan Mts and the stage when calcite and anhydrite veins formed in the studied strata. We thus argue that diagenesis related to high salinity fluids occurred as a response to the Tianshan Mts'rapid uplift and related tectonic processes. The flow of high salinity fluids was probably driven by a density gradient and channeled and focused by fractures formed contemporaneously. 展开更多

Nutrient release from sediment is considered a significant source for overlying water. Given that nutrient release mechanisms in sediment are complex and difficult to simulate, traditional approaches commonly use assigned parameter values to simulate these processes. In this study, a nitrogen flux model was developed and coupled with the water quality model of an urban lake. After parameter sensitivity analyses and model calibration and validation, this model was used to simulate nitrogen exchange at the sediment–water interface in eight scenarios. The results showed that sediment acted as a buffer in the sediment–water system. It could store or release nitrogen at any time, regulate the distribution of nitrogen between sediment and the water column, and provide algae with nitrogen. The most effective way to reduce nitrogen levels in urban lakes within a short time is to reduce external nitrogen loadings. However, sediment release might continue to contribute to the water column until a new balance is achieved. Therefore, effective measures for reducing sediment nitrogen should be developed as supplementary measures. Furthermore, model parameter sensitivity should be individually examined for different research subjects. 展开更多

As a repository of REE,the Paleoproterozoic phosphorite of the Aravalli Basin in India is explored time to time.Paleoproterozoic phosphorite deposits of the Sallopat sub-basin Banswara district of the Aravalli Supergroup show moderate REE concentrations much lower than that of average marine phosphorites.Different ratios and PAAS-normalized REE distribution patterns reflect MREE enrichment over LREE and HREE in these phosphorites.MREE enrichment confirmed by(Sm/Yb)Nversus(Sm/Pr)Nrelationship and attributed to the selective uptake by cyanobacteria and mixing of riverine inputs.Y/Ho,La/Ce and Er/Nd ratios confirm that the REE in Sallopat phosphorites might have been affected by the argillaceous terrigenous and plagioclase-rich sediments probably derived from Banded Gneissic Complex.Diagenetic modeling indicates that REE were concentrated during early diagenetic processes with limited weathering influence.Moderate negative to low Ce anomaly depicts oxic to sub-oxic conditions of seawater due to oxidation of Ce^(3+)to Ce^(4+)whereas Eu^(3+)reduced to Eu^(2+)indicating positive Euanomaly and reducing conditions as well during the deposition. These anomalies may be due to the stratified restricted marine environment of upwelling and mingling of organic-rich anoxic deep water with oxic upper seawater prior to the formation of phosphorite deposits in the embayment.Enrichment of REE in Sallopat phosphorite relies on various physico-chemical conditions. These phosphorites may have been formed in restricted marine water which was influenced by extra clastic sediment input carried out by fluvial systems. 展开更多

The deeply buried Lower Cambrian Longwangmiao Formation and Upper Ediacaran Dengying Formation from the Sichuan Basin,China, have a total natural gas reserve up to 3×10^(12)m^(3).The complex diagenetic evolution and their impacts on the present-day reservoir quality have not been systematically elucidated, hampering the current exploration.Crucially, the integration and comparation diagenetic study on these two formations, which may be able to shed new lights on reservoir formation mechanism, are yet to be systemically evaluated.By compiling geochemistry data, including carbonate U-Pb ages and petrophysics data, coupled with new petrology, trace elements, and strontium isotope data,of various types of diagenetic carbonates, this study aims to decipher the potential links between diagenesis and reservoir development of both formations.Intriguingly, similar diagenetic sequence, which contains five distinctive dolomite phases,is established in both formations. The matrix dolomite(D1)and early dolomite cement(D2)were likely formed by reflux dolomitization,as inferred by their nearly syn-depositional U-Pb ages and elevatedδ^(18)O caused by seawater evaporation. The subsequent moderate burial dolomite cement(D3)was most plausibly the product of burial compaction as indicated by its lighterδ^(18)O and slightly younger U-Pb ages compared with D1 and D2.Whereas deep burial dolomite cements(D4 and D5)yield markedly depletedδ^(18)O,elevated ^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr,along with much younger U-Pb ages and higher precipitation temperatures, suggesting that they were likely linked to hydrothermal fluids.Despite the wide occurrence of meteoric and organic acids leaching and thermochemical sulfate reduction, they may have only played a subsidiary role on these reservoirs development.Instead, superior reservoir quality is tightly linked to tectonics as inferred by higher reservoir quality closely related to the well-developed fractures and faults filled with abundant hydrothermal minerals.Notably, good reservoirs in both formations are mainly attributed to high permeability caused by tectonics.Hence, this new contribution emphasizes the crucial role of tectonics on spatially explicit reservoir prediction of deep to ultra-deep(up to>8000 m)carbonates in the Sichuan Basin,as well as other sedimentary basin analogues in China. 展开更多

Considering the action mechanisms of overpressure on physical changes in skeleton particles of deep reservoir rocks and the differences in physical changes of skeleton particles under overpressure and hydrostatic pressure, the sandstone of the Jurassic Toutunhe Formation in the southern margin of Junggar Basin was taken as an example for physical modeling experiment to analyze the action mechanisms of overpressure on the physical properties of deep reservoirs. (1) In the simulated ultra-deep layer with a burial depth of 6000-8000 m, the mechanical compaction under overpressure reduces the remaining primary pores by about a half that under hydrostatic pressure. Overpressure can effectively suppress the mechanical compaction to allow the preservation of intergranular primary pores. (2) The linear contact length ratio under overpressure is always smaller than the linear contact length ratio under hydrostatic pressure at the same depth. In deep reservoirs, the difference between the mechanical compaction degree under overpressure and hydrostatic pressure shows a decreasing trend, the effect of abnormally high pressure to resist the increase of effective stress is weakened, and the degree of mechanical compaction is gradually close to that under hydrostatic pressure. (3) The microfractures in skeleton particles of deep reservoirs under overpressure are thin and long, while the microfractures in skeleton particles of deep reservoirs under hydrostatic pressure are short and wide. This difference is attributed to the probable presence of tension fractures in the rocks containing abnormally high pressure fluid. (4) The microfractures in skeleton particles under overpressure were mainly formed later than that under hydrostatic pressure, and the development degree and length of microfractures both extend deeper. (5) The development stages of microfractures under overpressure are mainly controlled by the development stages of abnormally high pressure and the magnitude of effective stress acting on the skeleton particles. Moreover, the development stages of microfractures in skeleton particles are more than those under hydrostatic pressure in deep reservoir. The multi-stage abnormally high pressure plays an important role in improving the physical properties of deep reservoirs. 展开更多

Based on the measurements of petrological, petrophysical and elastic properties of the samples of different sedimentary facies in the fourth member of Sinian Dengying Formation (Deng 4 Member) in the Sichuan Basin, the diagenetic processes of reservoirs of different sedimentary facies and their controls on the petrophysical properties were discussed. The results show that cracks and mineral composition jointly control the petrophysical properties, and both are significantly influenced by sedimentary environment and diagenesis. The microbial dolomite of mound-shoal facies mainly experienced multi-stage dolomitization, penecontemporaneous dissolution, tectonic rupture and hydrothermal/organic acid dissolution processes, giving rise to cracks and dissolved pores. The grannular dolomite of inter-mound-shoal bottomland or dolomitic lagoon facies mainly underwent mechanical compaction, burial dolomitization and tectonic-hydrothermal action, creating cracks and intercrystalline pores. The diagenesis related to crack development increases the pressure- and saturation-dependent effects of samples, leading to significant decrease in the compressional wave impedance and Poisson's ratio. Dolomitization changes the properties of mineral particles, resulting in a Poisson's ratio close to dolomite. The muddy, siliceous and calcareous sediments in the low-energy environment lead to the decrease of impedance and the differential change of Poisson's ratio (significantly increased or decreased). The samples with both cracks and dissolved pores show high P-wave velocity dispersion characteristics, and the P-wave velocity dispersion of samples with only fractures or pores is the lowest. 展开更多

The tight reservoirs of the Fengcheng Formation at the southern margin of the Mahu Sag have strong heterogeneity due to the diversity in their pore types, sizes, and structures. The microscopic characteristics of tight reservoirs and the mechanisms that generate them are of significance in identifying the distribution of high-quality reservoirs and in improving the prediction accuracy of sweet spots in tight oil reservoirs. In this paper, high-pressure mercury intrusion (HPMI) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments were carried out on samples from the tight reservoirs in the study area. These experimental results were combined with cluster analysis, fractal theory, and microscopic observations to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate pore types, sizes, and structures. A classification scheme was established that divides the reservoir into four types, based on the microstructure characteristics of samples, and the genetic mechanisms that aided the development of reservoir microstructure were analyzed. The results show that the lower limit for the tight reservoir in the Fengcheng Formation is Φ of 3.5% and K of 0.03 mD. The pore throat size and distribution span gradually decrease from Type I, through Type II and Type III reservoirs to non-reservoirs, and the pore type also evolves from dominantly intergranular pores to intercrystalline pores. The structural trend shows a decrease in the ball-stick pore-throat system and an increase in the branch-like pore-throat system. The dual effects of sedimentation and diagenesis shape the microscopic characteristics of pores and throats. The sorting, roundness, and particle size of the original sediments determine the original physical properties of the reservoir. The diagenetic environment of ‘two alkalinity stages and one acidity stage’ influenced the evolution of pore type and size. Although the cementation of authigenic minerals in the early alkaline environment adversely affected reservoir properties, it also alleviated the damage of the later compaction to some extent. Dissolution in the mid-term acidic environment greatly improved the physical properties of this tight reservoir, making dissolution pores an important reservoir space. The late alkaline environment occurred after large-scale oil and gas accumulation. During this period, the cementation of authigenic minerals had a limited effect on the reservoir space occupied by crude oil. It had a more significant impact on the sand bodies not filled with oil, making them function as barriers. 展开更多

High-quality reservoirs occur in the middle-shallow horizons of the northern Songliao Basin. The distribution and genesis of their anomalously high porosity zones were studied using measured porosities, examination of ordinary thin sections and blue epoxy resin-impregnated thin sections and by SEM. The results show that there are three anomalously high porosity zones at the depth of 450-900 m, 1,300-1,900 m, 2,050-2,350 m respectively, named zone i, zone ii and zone iii from top to bottom. Horizontally, zone i and zone ii are distributed all over the basin except in the Southeastern Uplift, while zone iii is only distributed in the Central Depression. Zone i was formed by meteoric water leaching as well as organic acid dissolution. Zones ii and iii were dominantly formed by organic acid dissolution. Additionally, clay mineral transformation generating H+ and hydrocarbon emplacement retarding the cementation of sandstones are also important for the formation of zones ii and iii. 展开更多

The diagenetic processes of the Tabei sandstones in the Tarim Basin include compaction, cementation (quartz overgrowths, calcite, clay minerals and a minor amount of pyrite), and dissolution of the feldspar and calcite cement. Porosity was reduced by compaction from an assumed original 40% to about 22.1%. Cementation reduced porosity to 26.6%. The Tabei sandstones lost a little more porosity by compaction than by cementation. Quartz cementation, especially syntaxial quartz overgrowth, is a major cause of porosity-loss in many reservoirs in moderately to deeply buried sandstone. Calcite cementation played a key role in the porosity evolution of sandstones. At the early stage of burial, the early calcite cement occupied most of the pore spaces resulting in significant porosity. On the other hand, some primary porosity has been preserved due to incomplete filling or the presence of scattered patches of calcite cement. In addition to calcite, several clay minerals, including illite and chlorite occurred as pore-filling and pore-lining cements. The pore-lining chlorite may have helped in retaining the porosity by preventing the precipitation of syntaxial quartz overgrowths. Illite, which largely occurred as hair-like rims around the grains and bridges on the pore throats, caused a substantial deterioration of penetrability of the reservoir. Calcite cement dissolution was extensive and contributed significantly to the development of secondary porosity. 展开更多

A better understanding of the controls on reservoir quality has become essential in the petroleum exploration in recent years. Determining the original composition of tile sediment framework is important not only for paleogeographic reconstructions, but it is also vital tbr predicting the nature of physical and chemical diagenesis of the potential reservoirs. Depositional setting and diagenesis are important factors in controlling the type and quality of most siliciclastic reservoirs. We studied the Upper Triassic Chang 8 and 6 members, where the relationship between sediment provenance and diagenesis was examined. The study attempts to clarify sediment provenance and post-depositional diagenetic modifications of the sandstones through systematic analytical methods including petrographic macro- and microscopic analysis of grain and heavy mineral types, and measurements of the palaeocurrent direction of the Yanchang Formation sediments in the outcrops in order to determine the provenance of the studied sediments. Furthermore, the relationship between framework grains, pore types and diagenesis of the sediments was analyzed by thin section petrographic characterization using a polarizing microscope. Additionally, a JEOL JSM-T330 scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with a digital imaging system was used to investigate the habits and textural relationships of diagenetic minerals. On the basis of our results, we believe that sediment provenance is a significant factor which controls the type and degree of diagenesis which may be expected in sandstones. In the Chang 8 and 6 members, tile formation of chlorite rims and laumontite cement was observed where volcanic rock fragments constitute a large part of the framework grains. Furthermore, high biotite content provides abundant iron and magnesium and enables the tbnnation of chlorite rims due to biotite hydrolysis. In addition, ductile deformation of biotite leads to strong mechanical compaction of the sediments. Conversely, high feldspar content diminishes the degree of mechanical compaction, however the dissolution of feldspar minerals in sandstones is commonly observed. Apart from feldspars, quartz and other rigid fi'amework grains highly control the degree of mechanical compaction during the initial stage of burial (0-2 km). 展开更多

The Upper Triassic oil accumulations in the Ordos Basin is the most successful tight oil play in China, with average porosity values of less than 10% and permeability values below 1.0 mD.This study investigated the geological characteristics and origin of the tight oil accumulations in the Chang 6 member of the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation in the Shanbei area based on over 50,000 petrological,source-rock analysis, well logging and production data. The tight oil accumulation of the Chang 6 member is distributed continuously in the basin slope and the centre of the basin. The oilwater relationships are complex.Laumontite dissolution pores are the most important storage spaces, constituting 30%-60% of total porosity and showing a strong positive relationship with oil production. The pore-throat diameter is less than 1 μm,and the calculated critical height of the oil column is much larger than the tight sand thickness, suggesting that the buoyancy was probably of limited importance for oil migration. The pressure difference between the source rocks and sandstone reservoirs is inferred to have provided driving force for hydrocarbon migration. Two factors of source-reservoir configuration and laumontite dissolution contributed to the formation of the Chang 6 tight oil accumulations.Intense hydrocarbon generation and continuous sand bodies close to the hydrocarbon kitchen are the foundation for the large-scale oil distribution.Dissolution of feldspar-laumontite during the process of organic matter evolution generated abundant secondary pores and improved the reservoir quality. 展开更多

Based on porosity and permeability measurements, mercury porosimetry measurements, thin section analyses, SEM observations, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and granulometric analyses, diagenetic features of reservoir sandstones taken from the Zhuhai formation in the Panyu low-uplift of the Pear River Mouth Basin were examined. This study shows that chlorite cements are one of the most important diagenetic features of reservoir sandstones. The precipitation of chlorite was controlled by multiple factors and its development occurred early in eo-diagenesis and continued till Stage A of middle diagenesis. The precipitation of chlorite at the early stage was mainly affected by the sedimentary environment and provenance. Abundant Fe- and Mg-rich materials were supplied during the deposition of distributary channel sediments in the deltaic front setting and mainly in alkaline conditions. With the burial depth increasing, smectite and kaolinite tended to be transformed into chlorite. Smectite cements were completely transformed into chlorite in sandstones of the studied area. Volcanic lithics rich in Fe and Mg materials were dissolved and released Fe2+ and Mg 2+ into the pore water. These cations precipitated as chlorite cements in middle diagenesis in an alkaline diagenetic environment. Chlorite coatings acted as porosity and permeability, thus helping preserve cements in the chlorite cemented sandstones. The reservoir quality of chlorite cemented sandstones is much better than sandstones without chlorite cements. Chlorite cements play an important role in the reservoir evolution that was mainly characterized by preserving intergranular porosity and forming better pore-throat structures of sandstones. 展开更多
