Different from traditional least mean square error minimum criterion in which the error is uncorrelated with the input vector, the proposed LMS-ED minimum criterion tries to minimize the correlation between the error difference and input vector difference. The novel adaptive LMS-ED algorithm is then derived to update the weights of adaptive noise canceller. A comparison between cancelling performances of adaptive least mean square (LMS), normalized LMS (NLMS) and proposed LMS-ED algorithms is simulated by using three kinds of chaotic noises. The simulation results clearly show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the LMS and NLMS algorithms in achieving small values of steady-state excess mean square error. Moreover, the computational complexity of the proposed LMS-ED algorithm is the same as that of the standard LMS algorithms.展开更多

This study used the eovariances obtained in the previous study in the data assimilation and model forecast system based on three-dimensional variational method and the Weather Research and Forecasting model. In this study, analyses and forecasts from this system with different covariances for a period of one month were compared, and the causes for differing results were presented. The varia- tions of analysis increments with different-scale errors are consistent with those of variances and correlations of back- ground errors that were reported in the previous paper. In particular, the introduction of smaller-scale errors leads to greater amplitudes in analysis increments for medium-scale wind at the heights of both high- and low-level jets. Tem- perature and humidity analysis increments are greater at the corresponding scales at the middle- and upper-levels. These analysis increments could improve the intensity of the jet-convection system that includes jets at different levels and the coupling between them that is associated with latent heat release. These changes in analyses will contribute to more ac- curate wind and temperature forecasts in the corresponding areas. When smaller-scale errors are included, humidity analysis increments are significantly enhanced at large scales and lower levels, to moisten southern analyses. Thus, dry bias can be corrected, which will improve humidity forecasts. Moreover, the inclusion of larger- (smaller-) scale errors will be beneficial for the accuracy of forecasts of heavy (light) precipitation at large (small) scales because of the ampli- fication (diminution) of the intensity and area in precipitation forecasts.展开更多

First, the 3D parabolic equation is discretized in spatial variables by using spectral collocation method and the discrete scheme is transformed into matrix formulation by tensor product. Second~ the classical SFDS is obtained by difference discretization in time-direction. The ensemble of data are comprised with the first few transient solutions of the classical SFDS for the 3D parabolic equation and the POD bases of ensemble of data are generated by using POD technique and SVD. The unknown quantities of the classical SFDS are replaced with the linear combination of POD bases and a reduced- order extrapolation SFDS with lower dimensions and sufficiently high accuracy for the 3D parabolic equation is established. Third, the error estimates between the classical SFDS solutions and the reduced-order extrapolation SFDS solutions and the implementation for solving the reduced-order extrapolation SFDS are provided. Finally, a numerical example shows that the errors of numerical computations are consistent with the theoretical results. Moreover, it is shown that the reduced-order extrapolation SFDS is effective and feasible to find the numerical solutions for the 3D parabolic equation.展开更多
