The discharge patterns of neurons in auditory centers encode information about sounds. However, few studies have focused on the synaptic mechanisms underlying the shaping of discharge patterns using intracellular recording techniques. Here,we investigated the discharge patterns of inferior collicular(IC)neurons using intracellular recordings to further elucidate the mechanisms underlying the shaping of discharge patterns.Under in vivo intracellular recording conditions, recordings were obtained from 66 IC neurons in 18 healthy adult mice(Mus musculus,Km)under free field-stimulation.Fiftyeight of these neurons fired bursts of action potentials(APs)to auditory stimuli and the remaining eight just generated local responses such as excitatory(n=4)or inhibitory(n=4)postsynaptic potentials.Based on the APs and subthreshold responses, the discharge patterns were classified into seven types:phasic(24/58,41.4%),phasic burst(8/58,13.8%),pauser(4/58,6.9%),phasic-pauser(1/58,1.7%),chopper(2/58,3.4%),primary-like tonic(14/58,24.1%)and sound-induced inhibitory(5/58,8.6%).We concluded that(1)IC neurons exhibit at least seven distinct discharge patterns;(2)inhibition participates in shaping the discharge pattern of most IC neurons and plays a role in sculpting the pattern, except for the primary-like tonic pattern which was not shapedby inhibition;and(3)local neural circuits are the likely structural basis that shapes the discharge patterns of IC neurons and can be formed either in the IC or in lower-level auditory structures. 展开更多

A discharge ignited by an AC power source in contact with deionized water as one of the electrodes is investigated.Immediately after initiation, the discharge exhibits a unique phenomenon:the gas-phase discharge is extended into the liquid.Later,a cone-like structure is observed at the liquid surface.Synchronous monitoring of current–voltage characteristics and liquid properties versus time suggests that the discharge shapes are functions of the liquid properties. The spatio-temporal profiles indicate the potential effects of water, ambient air impurities, and metastable argon on the discharge chemistry. This becomes more obvious near the liquid surface due to increasing production of various transient reactive species such as centerdot OH and NO centerdot. Moreover,it is revealed that thermalization of the rotational population distributions of the rotational states(N′⩽6,J′⩽13/2)in the Q1 branch of the OH(A2Σ+,υ′=0→X2Π3/2,υ′′=0)band ro-vibrational system is influenced by the humid environment near the liquid surface. In addition, the transient behaviors of instantaneous concentrations of long-lived reactive species(LRS)such as H2O2,NO−2,and NO−3 are observed with lengthening the discharge time. The production of multiple transient and LRS proposes AC excited gas–liquid argon discharge as a potential applicant in industrial wastewater cleaning, clinical medicine, and agriculture. 展开更多

The hollow hexagonal pattern involved in surface discharges is firstly investigated in a?dielectric barrier discharge system. The spatiotemporal structures of the pattern are studied using an intensified charge-coupled device and photomultiplier. Instantaneous images taken by an intensified charge-coupled device and optical correlation measurements show that the surface discharges are induced by volume discharges. The optical signals indicate that the discharge filaments constituting the hexagonal frame discharge randomly at the first current pulse or the second pulse, once?or twice. There is no?interleaving of several sub-lattices, which indicates that the ‘memory' effect is no longer in force due to surface discharges. By using the emission spectrum method, both the molecule vibration temperature?and electron density of the surface discharges are larger than that of the volume discharges. 展开更多

Obtaining a reliable discharge of particulate solids from a storage silo is a prerequisite to securing oper- ational adequacy in solids handling processes. If a silo is poorly designed, an unreliable interrupted discharge often occurs. In this study, an in-house finite element (FE) program was modified to predict the particulate solids flow patterns during discharges from silos, and the effect of a double-cone insert on such flow patterns. In FE modeling, a Eulerian approach was adopted with an assumption of steady-state flow-a state that greatly facilitated investigations on the effects of double-cone inserts on the flow of particulate solids. Predictions were carried out on whether the discharge was in mass flow or funnel flow, associated with the inclination angle of the silo's hopper. Predicted results were in agreement with the Jenike Chart, and proved that an upper lateral pressure ratio value gave a better critical hopper half angle to achieve mass flow (EN 1991-4, 2006). The shape and size of the stagnant zone were further discussed to address the flow channel boundary between the flowing and static solids if the discharge was in a funnel pattern. Results also showed the effects of a double-cone insert on the flow patterns which con- verted silos from funnel flow to mass flow up to a certain hopper inclination angle and would improve the flow pattern even for shallower angles. Experiments were carried out to verify some of the predicted results. Some qualitative comparisons were made between the predicted results and experimental mea- surements, which indicated that further efforts are needed in predicting the shape of the stagnant zone (flow channel boundary) during funnel flow discharges. 展开更多

The sensing of hot and cold stimuli by dental neurons differs in several fundamental ways. These sensations have been characterized quantitatively through the measured time course of neural discharge signals that result from hot or cold stimuli applied to the teeth of animal models. Although various hypotheses have been proposed to explain the underlying mechanism, the ability to test competing hypotheses against experimental recorded data using biophysical models has been hindered by limitations in our understanding of the specific ion channels involved in nociception of dental neurons. Here we apply recent advances in established biophysical models to test the competing hypotheses. We show that a sharp shooting pain sensation experienced shortly following cold stimulation cannot be attributed to the activation of thermosensitive ion channels, thereby falsifying the so-called neuronal hypothesis, which states that rapidly transduced sensations of coldness are related to thermosensitive ion channels. Our results support a central role of mechanosensitive ion channels and the associated hydrodynamic hypothesis. In addition to the hydrodynamic hypothesis, we also demonstrate that the long time delay of dental neuron responses after hot stimulation could be attributed to the neuronal hypothesis-that a relatively long time is required for the temperature around nociceptors to reach some threshold. The results are useful as a model of how multiphysical phenomena can be combined to provide mechanistic insight into different mechanisms underlying pain sensations. 展开更多
