At 12:52 pm on September 5,2022,an Ms 6.8 earthquake occurred in Luding County,Sichuan Province,China.Based on high-resolution aerial photographs and satellite imageries obtained after the earthquake,as well as field investigation,a total of 8685 earthquake-triggered landslides(EQTLs)were interpreted. The landslides covered an area of 30.7km^(2),with a source area of 9.4 km^(2).These EQTLs were mainly distributed in areas with a seismic intensity of VIII and IX.Most of the landslides were small and medium in size, and their types included landslide, rockfall, and rock slump.Characteristic landslide distributions were found,EQTLs were distributed along the Xianshuihe fault, landslide area decreased gradually with an increased distance to the fault;EQTLs were distributed along the Daduhe River and roads;besides, landslide distribution was associated with ground deformation caused by the earthquake.EQTLs’characteristics indicated that,a large number of EQTLs were located near the foot of the slope;the full area of EQTLs and their source area followed a power function. This study concluded that Luding EQTLs were greater in number and area but relatively smaller in terms of affected area.Investigations on geo-hazards post-earthquake and risk assessment were proposed in the earthquake-stricken area to support the rehabilitation and reconstruction. 展开更多

The giant jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai is the largest and most dangerous jellyfish species in East Asian waters, and the N.nomurai bloom causes serious problem in coastal industries, fisheries, and tourism. In the previous surveys,we found N.nomurai could not be observed in the south of 30°N.In this paper,we analyzed the mechanism of this phenomenon. After exploring the possible impacts of different environmental factors,we found that physical processes are essential to the distribution pattern of N.nomurai rather than biological or chemical factors in the East China Sea.The combination of the location of the initial breeding places of N.nomurai and the current system determine the distribution pattern. This study could provide important insights to the potential control of the giant jellyfish in the Chinese coastal waters. 展开更多

An investigation was conducted on distribution pattern, site condition and population structure of yew Taxus cuspidata Sieb. et Zucc. in Muling Forest Bureau of Heilongjiang Province, China in April, 2005. Results showed that yew is mainly distributed under the main storey of natural mixed forest of conifer and broadleaf, the soil moisture content of the yew site is high (40%-60%), the pH value of soil is relatively lower (4.7-5.5), and that the population structure of wild yew is not rational, belonging to the degeneration population, which is one of the reasons leading to the population decline. Although the site conditions of Muling area are suitable for the growth of wild yew, the population of wild yew shows a decline tendency, due to the fact that the middle-sized adult yew trees have been cut, young yews are often grazed by wildlife, and that the trunks of adult yew tend to be hollow. 展开更多

The canopy of subtropical natural forests usually consists of several co-dominant populations(CDPs),which play a crucial role in forest structure, formation of the forest environment, and ecological function. However, little attention has been given to changes in spatial patterns in CDPs during natural succession.Cyclobalanopsis glauca(Thunb.)Oerst.,Quercus variabilis Blume, and Pinus yunnanensis var.tenuifolia W.C.Cheng & Y.W.Law are canopy species that form CDPs in zonal forests along the Nanpan River in southwest China. We used the g(r) function and its bivariate distribution model,g_(12)(r),which is based on distances between pairs of points,to explore the dynamics of the three CDP species with respect to distribution patterns and spatial correlations in two secondary forests(one 30-year-old forest [30-YF] and one 57-year-old forest [57-YF]).The following key results were obtained:(1) there was a clumped pattern in the 30-YF,but the intensity of aggregation varied among populations and life stages. The distribution pattern gradually shifted to become random with longer succes sion time(i.e.,30-YF vs.57-YF),expansion of the observation scale(r=0-20 m),and at later life stages.(2) Aside from the mid-sized C.glauca trees and large P.yunnanensis trees, the trees repulsed each other at certain scales(r=0-2,5-6,11-12,14-16 m) in the 30-YF.Almost all of the life stages in the CDPs were independently correlated. This independent correlation was exacerbated by a longer succession time.(3) An increase in life stages and longer succession also promoted independent changes in intraspecific correlations.(4) Intraspecific correlations were stronger than interspecific correlations. Our results showed that reducing exclusive competition is essential to coexistence in CDPs.Inter-and intra-specific repulsion may occur at the same time, but intraspecific repulsion was the main driving force behind the random distributions and independent correlations. 展开更多

Leaf area index (LAI) of natural vegetation is recognized as the most important variable for measuring vegetation structure over large areas, and for relating it to energy and mass exchange, which has been successfully estimated from satellite resolution sensors. In this paper, according to the statistical analysis based on a lot of forest plots, the mathematical models of LAI distribution patterns in the hydro thermal spaces for five coniferous forest types in China were established. For the cold temperate larch forests growing in the dry and cold climate, their LAI increases with the increasing of warm index and precipitation in the way of hyperbolic quadratic surface. For the cold temperate spruce fir forests and temperate Pinus tabulaeformis forests, their LAI is negatively related to the annual mean air temperature in the way of the natural exponential curve, in order to adapt to the water oppressed environments. For the subtropical Pinus massoniana forests and Cunninghamia lanceolata forests growing in the warm and moist climate, their LAI is related to the annual mean air temperature in the way of the parabolic quadratic curve. 展开更多

Medicinal plants are the primary material basis for disease prevention and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).The conservation and sustainable utilization of these medicinal plants is critical for the development of the TCM industry. However, wild medicinal plant resources have sharply declined in recent decades. To ameliorate the shortage of medicinal plant resources,it is essential to explore the development potential of the TCM industry in different geographical regions. For this purpose,we examined the spatial distribution of commonly used medicinal plants in China, the number of Chinese medicinal material markets, and the number of TCM decoction piece enterprises.Specifically, multispecies superimposition analysis and Thiessen polygons were used to reveal the optimal range for planting bulk medicinal plants and the ideal regions for building Chinese medicinal material markets, respectively.Furthermore,we quantitatively analyzed mismatches between the spatial distribution of commonly used medicinal plant richness,Chinese medicinal material markets, and TCM decoction piece enterprises. We found that the areas suitable for growing commonly used medicinal plants in China were mainly distributed in Hengduan Mountain,Nanling Mountain,Wuling Mountain, and Daba Mountain areas. The Thiessen polygon network based on Chinese medicinal material market localities showed there are currently fewer markets in southwestern, northwestern, and northeastern China than in central and southern China.TCM decoction piece enterprises are concentrated in a few provinces, such as Hebei and Jiangxi. We found that the distribution of commonly used medicinal plants,Chinese medicinal material markets and TCM decoction piece enterprises are mismatched in Henan,Shaanxi,Hunan,Hubei,Zhejiang,Fujian,Chongqing, and Xizang. We recommend strengthening development of the TCM industry in Henan,Hunan,Zhejiang,Shaanxi,Hubei,Chongqing,Fujian, and Xizang;building more Chinese medicinal material markets in southwestern, northwestern, and northeastern China;and establishing medicinal plant nurseries in resource-rich provinces to better protect and domesticate local medicinal plants. 展开更多

The distribution pattern of Isoetes sinensis populations was investigated in relation to its biological characteristics such as age structure and regeneration mode, and the microenvironment. Contagious distribution pattern was found in populations of all sizes. Under the same climatic and site conditions, the heterogeneity of mieroenvironment resulting from the different depths of water and soil erosion significantly affecred the type and scale of distribution patterns of Isoetes sinensis populations. Even at the same site, the center and the edges of the water body had different effects on the distribution pattern of the plants. As one of the co-dominants, the distribution of Isoetes sinensis in communities was affected by other dominant species, especially by the evergreen grass species. Water is the major factor determining the distribution pattern of lsoetes sinensis in various communities. The pattern of contagious distribution was observed in different size of populations of I.sinensis, however the Lloyd indices obtained for the populations of various sizes differed significantly. 展开更多

On the basis of the data of zooplankton biomass and three major taxa—— Copepoda, Chaetognatha andSiphonophora of May-June 1986, July-August and December 1987, the distributional patterns and the indicator species of zooplankton in the Kuroshio and adjacent waters of the East China Sea are preliminarily studied. The results are as follows:The horizontal distribution of zooplankton biomass and the abundance of copepods, chaetognaths and siphonophores arecurred in the continent area northwest of Taiwan and the south-centre section of the East China Sea continent, which are the mix front of different waters. Zooplankton in the water area inside of Ryukyu Islands presented low abundance and high diversity. There are clear seasonal variations in zooplankton biomass and abundance in the study area. The strength or weakness of different water masses and fronts is the basic reason for the variations of zooplankton biomass and abundance. The species composition of zooplankton in the study area is complex and varies, however, the tropic oceanic species predominates overwhelmingly. The distribution of different ecotype species evidences the distribution of different water masses and the state of mixture. The indicator species of each water mass are listed in the paper so as to provide grounds for the variation of currents in the Kuroshio area. The temperature and salinity of sea water are important factors affecting zooplankton distribution, composition and diversity , however the role of salinity is major. With the replacement of one season by another, the correlative levels of temperature and salinity to various zooplankton taxa are more or less significant. 展开更多

Objective The term "pockmark" was introduced by King and MacLean (1970) to describe small "circular" on echosounder records in Nova Scotia. described as circular, near Pockmarks are usually circular or elongated depressions, generally 10--400 m in diameter and 30-50 m in deep. Pockmarks are normally regarded to be manifestations of fluids escape through the seabed. Pockmarks are valuable features on the seafloor and are useful in constraining the hydrodynamics of sedimentary basins. Since then pockmarks have been recognized in many areas around the world. They occur predominantly in fine-grained siliciclastic depositional settings, although a few case studies have been reported in carbonate settings. In this paper we illustrate a suite of fluid escape features, discovered during the course of petroleum exploration on the West Africa continental margin (Fig. 1). They are particularly of interest to the oil and gas industry because they could be potential indicators of deeply buried hydrocarbon reservoirs, and fluid flow phenomena in the deep water oilfield are important for the safe and efficient exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons in the area. 展开更多

Understanding population structure provides basic ecological data related to species and ecosystems. Our objective was to understand the mechanisms involved in the maintenance of Quercus aquifolioides populations.Using a 1 ha permanent sample plot data for Q.aquifolioides on Sejila Mountain,Tibet Autonomous Region(Tibet),China,we analyzed the population structure of Q.aquifolioides by combining data for diameter class, static life table and survival curve.Simultaneously, the spatial distribution of Q.aquifolioides was studied using Ripley’s L Function in point pattern analysis. The results showed:(1) Individuals in Q.aquifolioides populations were mainly aggregated in the youngest age classes, that accounted for94.3% of the individuals; the older age classes had much smaller populations.Although the youngest age classes(ClassesⅠ and Ⅱ) had fewer individuals than Class Ⅲ,the total number of individuals in classes Ⅰ and Ⅱ was also greater than in classes Ⅳ to Ⅸ.In terms of tree height, fewsaplings, more medium-sized saplings and few large-sized trees were found. The diameter class structure of Q.aquifolioides populations formed an atypical ‘pyramid’type; the population was expanding, but growth was limited, tending toward a stable population.(2) Mortality of Q.aquifolioides increased continuously with age; life expectancy decreased over time, and the survivorship curve was close to a Deevey I curve.(3) The spatial distribution pattern of Q.aquifolioides varied widely across different developmental stages.Saplings and medium-sized tree showed aggregated distributions at the scales of 0–33 m and 0–29 m,respectively. The aggregation intensities of saplings and medium-sized trees at small scales were significantly stronger than that of large-sized trees.However,large-sized trees showed a random distribution at most scales.(4) No correlation was observed among saplings,medium-and large-sized trees at small scales, while a significant and negative association was observed as the scale increased.Strong competition was found among saplings,medium-and large-sized trees, while no significant association was observed between medium-and largesized trees at all scales.Biotic interactions and local ecological characteristics influenced the spatial distribution pattern of Q.aquifolioides populations most strongly. 展开更多

Calcite cements are volumetrically dominant among the most diagenetic constituents in turbidite sandstones of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation in the Dongying Depression. The results show carbonate cements mainly occur in three phases:Calcite I(pre-compaction),Calcite II(post-compaction)and ankerite in the turbidite sandstone. The isotopic composition of Calcite I and Calcite II range from−4.3‰to 4.4‰,−3.5‰to 4.3‰PDB,respectively,suggesting that the calcite cements are mainly derived from the interbedded shales. The early calcite cement precipitated from the mixing of lacustrine and meteoric waters at 38-69℃.The late-phase calcite precipitated from pore waters modified by water-rock interactions at 64-126℃.Two distribution patterns of calcite cements can be identified, depending on their position within the sandstone. The peripheral cementation of the sandstones is near the sand-shale contact. The development of cement is controlled by sandstone thickness and the properties of the interbedded shale. For scattered cementation, the distribution of the calcite cement is not controlled by the sand-shale contact.Calcite cement was preferentially distributed in coarse-grained sandstones, indicating that sandstones with high original permeability are the preferred pathway for the migration of early diagenetic fluids. 展开更多

Soritia leptalina endangers mainly Quercus aquifolioides, and it became particularly rampant on Q. aquifolioides in Linzhi area, Tibet. By applying field investigation and lab analysis, this study explored the spatial distribution type and sampling technology of S. leptalina larvae on Q. aquifolioides. The results showed that insect density in the upper layer of tree canopy is higher than that in the middle and lower layer, that in the upper, middle and lower layer of different levels varies greatly, and insect density in different directions follows the sequence: east > north > west > south; spatial distribution of S. leptalina on Q.aquifolioides belongs to aggregation type, larvae show mutual repulsion; aggregation of S. leptalina is the result of biological characteristics of its larvae and the habitat environment; taking Iwa regression model as the basis, the optimal sampling quantity is determined. The study disclosed the spatial distribution rules of S.leptalina on Q. aquifolioides, and on the basis of which could provide the theoretical basis for preventing Q.aquifolioides from the damage of S. leptalina, and also scientific support for studying the spatial distribution pattern of this insect and its natural enemies on other hosts. 展开更多

Concentrations and distribution patterns of rare earth elements(REEs)in the intertidal flat of Tianjin were studied using P(507) resin and ICP-MS analytical technology. The results show that average concentrations of REEs in the filtered(dissolved REEs), unfiltered and interstitial water are 0.461 μg·L^(-1), 4.98 μg·L^(-1) and 0.845 μg·L^(-1), respectively. Their distribution patterns are similar to those in inland natural rivers, but quite different from those in oceans. The average concentrations of REEs in sediments and suspended matters are 161.2 (mg·L^(-1)) and 168.1 mg·L^(-1), respectively, which are much lower than those in sediments of natural rivers but higher than those in sediments of the continental shelf of East China Sea. It is suggested that REEs in sediments and suspended matters of intertidal flat can have mainly originated from terrestrial soils and thus their transportation and transformation processes are similar with those in rivers, and different from those in continental shelves. Pollutants discharged into the Bohai Bay do·not cause significant effect on REEs in the intertidal flat of Tianjin yet. 展开更多

Petrography and mineral chemistry of ninety-eight ordinary chondrites from Grove Mountains (GRV), Antarctica, were presented and their. Weathering effect, shock metamorphism and type distribution patterns were discussed in this study. Among them, six are unequilibrated ordinary chondrites, including 3 H3 and 3 L3 ; and 92 meteorites are equilibrated ordinary chondrites, including 24 H-group ( 13 H4, 10 H5, 1 H6), 64 L-group (2 L4, 44 L5, 18 L6) and 4 LL-group (3 LL4, 1 LL5). Most GRV ehondrites ( 〉 90% ) displayed minor weathering effect ( W1 and W2). About half of the meteorites experienced severe shock metamorphism. They commonly contain shock-induced melt veins and pockets. These heavily shocked meteorites provide us with natural samples for study of high-pressure polymorphs of minerals. In addition, the Grove Mountains collection seems to have more abundant unequilibrated and L group ordinary ehondrites compared to the US Antarctic meteorite collection which were mainly found along the Transantarctic Mountains. 展开更多

The world animal geographical regionalization scheme and the plant geographical regionalization scheme have been formulated by zoologists and botanists respectively since the biogeography has been established. This research team initially confirmed the homogeneity of Chinese animal and plant geography. To explore the relationship between the distribution pattern of global animals, plants, and microorganisms, global 141,814 genera of terrestrial animals,17,526 genera of plants,21,321 genera of microorganisms, and their major taxa were analyzed using their proposed SGF(Similarity General Formula)and a new multivariate similarity clustering analysis method.Almost identical analytical results were obtained, meeting the requirements of statistics, geography, ecology and biology respectively. The expected consistency of their distribution pattern was achieved for the first time.We prove that the earth’s ecological conditions affect the homogeneity and accumulation of the distribution of animals, plants and microorganisms.Homogeneity determines the distribution pattern of global kinds of biological consistency, accumulation determines the impact of the evolutionary period on the breadth of distribution, microorganisms appear earliest, plants second, animals later, and their average distribution domain decreases in turn, reflecting these differences. Therefore, this study not only provides a theoretical basis and quantitative basis for the establishment of geographical regionalization scheme but also advances the development of biogeography to a new stage and raises the theory of biogeographic analysis to a new height. 展开更多

Carabid beetles, predatory insects, are abundant in forests and sensitive to environmental changes. The distribution patterns and diversity of carabid beetles in several natural forests were studied to provide a basis for evaluating the importance of a forest in the protection of carabid beetle diversity.Carabids were captured by pitfall traps during their seasonal activity from 2012 to 2013 in a poplar-birch forest,ash-walnut forest and broad-leaved Korean pine forest.A total of 5252 individuals, representing 21 species, were collected.Carabid abundance was highest in the broad-leaved Korean pine forest and lowest in the ash-walnut forest.Carabus billbergi Mannerheim and Pterostichus pertinax(Tschitscherine)were the dominant beetle species in each stand.Carabus canaliculatus Adams was dominant in the poplar-birch and ash-walnut forests, and Leistus niger Gebler was dominant in the ash-walnut forest. The carabids were affected differently by stand factors.C.billbergi and P.pertinax was positively correlated with mean DBH.C.canaliculatus and L.niger were not positively correlated with any stand factors. The broad-leaved Korean pine forest with greater age, large DBH and thick leaf litter fostered a high diversity of carabid species. The main yearly activity period for most carabids was during July.Different carabid species responded differently to seasonality, and the activity period of several species was relatively late(August)in the year. 展开更多

There exist some controversies over the larger zoogeographic divisions of the arid areas of Central Asia, whose characteristics include complex ecological environments, complex fauna origins and unique patterns of animal distribution. The aim of this study was to determine, using quantitative analysis, the distribution patterns of amphibians and reptiles in the arid areas of Central Asia, whose various physiographical regions were divided into 17 Operative Geographical Units (OGUs). Based on the presence or absence of 52 amphibian and reptile genera in the 17 OGUs, and by making use of the Czekanowski Similarity Index, the Baroni-Urbani and Buser's Similarity Index, and the strong and weak boundary test, we studied the biotic boundaries within these contested regions. In accordance with our results, the classification dendrogram was divided into two main branches. One branch is composed of the northern OGUs of the Altai Mountains which are a part of the Euro-Siberian Subrealm. The other branch includes all of the OGUs south of the Altai Mountains, which belong to the Central Asia Subrealm. There is a significantly weak biotic boundary (DW〉0, GW〉GS, P〈0.01) between the Euro-Siberian Subrealm and the Central Asia Subrealm that corre- sponded to the transitional zones. The boundary between the two subrealms runs along the Altai Mountains, the Sayan Mountains, the Hangai Mountains and the Mongolian Dagurr Mountains. The boundaries between the main branches in the Central Asia Subrealm are weak, reflecting the widespread existence of transitional zones in the arid areas of Central Asia. The Tianshan Mountains should be elevated to form its own separate region, "the Middle Asian Mountain Region", which, due to its special fauna and environment, would be classified at the same level as the Mongolia-Xinjiang Region. With the approach of creating a cluster analysis dendogram based upon the genera of amphibians and reptiles, the relationship of these higher level zoogeographical divisions was successfully resolved and the error of long-branch attraction was also avoided. With our clustering dendrogram as the foundation, the in- dependence test was applied to strong and weak boundaries, and this resolved the problem of where to attribute the transition areas and revealed as well the barrier effect that physical, geographic boundaries have upon amphibians and reptiles. The approach of combining genera clustering analysis with a statistical boundary test should be applicable not only to the distribution patterns of other animal groups, but also to delineating large-scale zoogeographical divisions. 展开更多
