Drilling mud is a key component in drilling operations and in accessing oil and gas reservoirs. Bentonite is applied as a viscosifier, fluid loss control agent, and as a weighting material in water-based drilling mud. The type of bentonite used in drilling mud formulation is sodium bentonite due to its high dispersion properties and high swelling capacity. Nigeria has a huge bentonite clay deposit resources which can be evaluated and enhanced in order to be utilized as drilling mud. However, bentonite clay from different parts of Nigeria was investigated and found to be calcium bentonite which is not suitable for drilling mud, because it has low swelling capacity and poor rheological properties. In this study, local bentonite obtained from Afuze, Edo state was used to formulate different samples of drilling mud with each treated using thermo-chemical beneficiation process with sodium carbonate and cassava starch, and then undergo characterization to identify the changes in physical properties and finally, draw comparison with API values for standard drilling mud. The results obtained from this study indicates that, the flow and rheological properties of the beneficiated drilling mud developed through thermo-chemical treatment, showed significant improvement compared to the untreated mud. Therefore, pure calcium bentonite from natural deposits in Nigeria can be modified to sodium bentonite and sufficiently used in drilling mud formulation. 展开更多

The series connection of multistage pumping module is the common concept of deepwater riserless mud recovery drilling system. In this system, the influence of the mass of pumping module on the vibration of mud recovery line cannot be ignored, and the lumped mass method has been utilized to discretize the mud recovery line. Based on the analysis of different boundary conditions, the paper establishes the axial forced vibration model of the mud recovery line considering the seawater damping, and the vibration model analysis provides the universal solution to the vibration model. An example of the two-stage pumping system has been used to analyze the dynamic response of mud recovery line under different excited frequencies. This paper has the important directive significance for the application of riserless mud recovery drilling technology in deepwater surface drilling. 展开更多

To find out the relationship between the oil-based mud,the formation fluid and the extracted gas,we use a thermodynamic approach based on static headspace gas chromatography technique to calculate the partition coefficients of 47 kinds of light hydrocarbons compounds between nC5 and nC8 in two kinds of oil-based mud-air systems,and reconstruct the original formation fluid composition under thermodynamic equilibrium.The oil-based drilling mud has little effect on the formation fluid compositions in the range of nC5-nC8(less than 1%for low-toxicity oil-based mud and less than 10%for oil-based mud).For most light hydrocarbon compositions,the partition coefficients obtained by vapor phase calibration and the direct quantitative methods have errors of less than 10%,and the partition coefficients obtained by direct quantitative method are more accurate.The reconstructed compositions of the two kinds of crude oil have match degrees of 91%and 89%with their real compositions,proving the feasibility and accuracy of reconstructing the composition of original formation fluid by using partition coefficients of light hydrocarbon compositions between nC5 and nC8. 展开更多

There is a direct link between the extent of formation damage and the filtration volume of the drilling fluids in hydrocarbon reservoirs.The filtration volume can be diminished by adding different additives to the drilling fluids.Recently,nanoparticles have been extensively used for enhancing the filtration characteristics of the drilling fluids.However,there is no reliable model for investigating the influence of this class of additives on the performance of drilling fluids.Hence in this study,two powerful tools ELM(extreme learning machine)and PSO-LSSVM(particle swarm optimization-least square support vector machine)are applied to determine the effect of various nanoparticles on the filtration volume.The assessment of the models is carried out by computing the statistical parameters,and it is found that ELM has a greater ability to predict the filtration volumes,while PSO-LSSVM performs satisfactorily too.The model predictions and experimental results are in excellent agreement as suggested by the values of root mean squared error(RMSE=0.2459),coefficient of determination(R^(2)=0.999),and mean relative error(MRE=2.028%)for the dataset.The statistical analysis shows that the suggested model can predict the filtration volume with great accuracy.Moreover,through sensitivity analysis of the input parameters,it is found that for a specified nanoparticle,the filtration volume is highly influenced by nanoparticle concentration and it is the essential variable for the optimization process. 展开更多

The present work intended to develop an invert emulsion drilling mud from biodegradable neem seed oil as an alternative to conventional diesel-based drilling mud.This would present comparable properties and performances with API standard requirements,ecologically friendly and at a low cost.Biodiesel produced from non-edible neem oil was used as the continuous phase in an invert emulsion-based drilling mud.Different tests to investigate the applicability of the mud for drilling applications were conducted.The rheological and lubricity tests results indicate that the neem oil biodiesel-based drilling muds are comparable with conventional diesel-based drilling muds.The produced biodiesel shows a significantly better flash point of 168℃ than the traditional diesel flash point of 70℃;indicating better fire safety than the conventional diesel.The lubricity and rheological data indicate the formulated mud with neem seed oil biodiesel fair reasonably well with conventional diesel and within the API requirements.In general,the preliminary results show that neem oil biodiesel is a potential alternative to conventional organic oil in formulating oil-based drilling mud in terms of technical and environmental analysis. 展开更多

Loss of drilling fluid is a common problem during the drilling of wells and it restricts the appropriate functionality of muds.Drilling fluid loss significantly increases drilling costs and non-productive time as well as the drilling operation risks.Various investigations have been carried out in order to find appropriate mud additives that either block fractures and pores or reduce fluid loss by improving the fluid rheology.Cheap,environmentally friendly and effective additives are still required by the drilling industry.Hence,the application of available materials in each region,to produce appropriate additives,is a challenge for the oil industry.In this study,Eucalyptus Camaldulensis(EUC)bark powder has been chosen as a new,fibrous,cheap,environmentally friendly and available material to control fluid loss,particularly in southern Iran.Different characterization tests,such as acid dissolution and fluid loss control,were carried out to study the performance of the new proposed additive.Removal by hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid were studied at various acid concentrations and temperatures.Dynamic fluid loss was also measured at different EUC concentrations.Our study showed that EUC powder can reduce the final fluid loss by 88-97%,the initial fluid loss by 45-66%,and the total loss by 87e94%,which is a satisfactory level. 展开更多
