This study investigated if super rice could better cope with soil water deficit and if it could have better yield performance and water use efficiency (WUE) under alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation than check rice. Two super rice cultivars and two elite check rice cultivars were grown in pots with three soil moisture levels, well watered (WW), moderate water deficit (MWD) and severe water deficit (SWD). Two cultivars, each for super rice and check rice, were grown in field with three irrigation regimes, alternate wetting and moderate drying (AWMD), alternate wetting and severe drying (AWSD) and conventional irrigation (CI). Compared with that under WW, grain yield was significantly decreased under MWD and SWD treatments, with less reduction for super rice than for check rice. Super rice had higher percentage of productive tillers, deeper root distribution, higher root oxidation activity, and greater aboveground biomass production at mid and late growth stages than check rice, especially under WMD and WSD. Compared with CI,AWMD increased, whereasAWSD decreased grain yield, with more increase or less decrease for super rice than for check rice. Both MWD and SWD treatments and eitherAWMD orAWSD regime significantly increased WUE compared with WW treatment or CI regime, with more increase for super rice than for check rice. The results suggest that super rice has a stronger ability to cope with soil water deficit and holds greater promising to increase both grain yield and WUE by adoption of moderate AWD irrigation. 展开更多

Supported metal catalysts play a vital role in the chemical industry, and the metal-support interaction is an important property of the catalyst. However, in the traditional impregnation method, it is difficult to obtain sufficient metal-support interactions owing to the mobility of the metal precursor during evaporation drying. Here, freeze drying is applied during impregnation instead of evaporation drying for enhancing the metal-support interactions. 57 Fe ZSM-5 was chosen as a representative catalyst. A quantitative analysis was conducted based on Mossbauer spectroscopy. Compared with traditional evaporation-drying catalyst, freeze-drying catalyst has stronger metal-support interactions. In addition, more iron species are confined in the channel and smaller metal sizes and less diversity are obtained. The compositional change is also proved because of the superior performance of the freeze-drying catalyst during N2O decomposition. This method can be extended to other supported metal catalysts prepared through an impregnation method, which can be used to tune the metal-support interactions and metal sizes. 展开更多

In kiln drying of softwood timber, external heat and moisture mass transfercoefficients are important in defining boundary temperature and moisture content at the woodsurface. In addition, superheated steam drying of wood is a promising technology but this has notbeen widely accepted commercially, partially due to the lack of understanding of the dryingphenomena occurred during drying. In this work, experimental investigation was performed to quantifythe heat transfer between wood surface and surrounding moist air or superheated steam. In theexperiment, saturated radiata pine sapwood samples were dried using dry-bulb/wet-bulb temperaturesof 60℃/50℃, 90℃/60℃, 120℃/70℃, 140℃/90℃, 160℃/90℃, 140℃/100℃ and 160℃/100℃. The lasttwo schedules were for superheated steam drying as the wet-bulb temperature was set at 100℃. Thecirculation velocity over the board surface was controlled at 4.2m·s^(-1). Two additional runs(90℃/60℃) using air velocities of 2.4 m·s^(-1) and 4.8 m·s^(-1) were performed to check theeffect of the circulation velocity. During drying, sample weight and temperatures at wood surfaceand different depths were continuously measured. Prom these measurements, changes in woodtemperature and moisture content were calculated and external heat-transfer coefficient wasdetermined for both the moist air and the superheated steam drying. 展开更多

We introduced a parameter r_s(the radius of the pores where the meniscus forms),which is composed of two factors,i e,water loss and cumulative pore size distribution(PSD),to provide a better explanation of the influence of superplasticizers(SPs)on early-age drying shrinkage. In our experiments,it is found that the addition of three types of SPs leads to a significant increase in the early-age drying shrinkage of cement paste, and drying shrinkage increases with the dosage of SPs.Based on the results above,we further studied the mechanism of the effects of SPs on the early-age drying shrinkage of cement paste by PSD and water loss, which are two components of r_s.The experimental results indicate that r_s can be a better index for the early-age drying shrinkage of cement-based materials with SPs than a single factor. In addition, the effects of SPs on other factors such as hydration degree and elastic modulus were also investigated and discussed. 展开更多

TiO_2-CeO_2 nanocomposite particles were prepared with Ce(NO_3)_3·6H_2O and TiCl_4 as precursors by the codeposition method and supercritical fluid drying (SCFD) technology. The particles prepared were characterized by means of XRD, TEM and FTIR. The results show that SCFD can give rise to the direct synthesis of the anatase TiO_2-CeO_2,and the particle size is 6~11 nm under 500 ℃ thermal-treated,smaller than that by common drying (CD). The phase transformation from anatase to rutile is inhibited by supercritical fluid drying technology. The peak of CeO_2 is not observed in XRD patterns,Ce-O band vibration was present in FTIR spectrum, which indicates that CeO_2 is well dispersed on the surface of TiO_2. 展开更多

Ti-Ce, Ti-Si binary and Ti-Ce-Si ternary novel nanocomposite oxide photocatalysts were prepared with cheap inorganic salts TiCI4, Na2SiO3·9H2O and Ce(NO3)3·6H2O as precursors by supercritical fluid drying (SCFD) technology. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD and TEM. The particle size of nanocomposite oxide photocatalysts synthesized by SCFD method is about 6 - 11 nm, which is smaller than those obtained by common drying method (CD). The phase transformation from anatase to rutile was inhibited by SCFD technology. The peaks of SiO2 and CeO2 in XRD patterns indicate that a SiO2 amorphorous phase exists in all the samples and CeO2 is well dispersed on the surface of TiO2. The orthogonal test was designed to optimize the preparing conditions. It is found that ceria dop;.ng enhances the photocatalyric activity markedly, and the optimum doping of CeO2 is 0.1%. The thermal stability of photocatalyst can be improved ; the growth of particle-size and the decrease of surface area can be prohibited by doping of SlOe. Heat-treatment is a necessary factor to induce chemistry change of Ti-Si surface. The optimum heat-treating temperature is 600℃. A novel and efficient Ti-Ce-Si ternary nanocomposite was prepared by SCFI) method with strong thermal stability and high photoactivity in the photodegratation of phenol. 展开更多

The influence of superplasticizer(SP) on the early age drying shrinkage of cement paste with the same consistency was investigated. To conduct the test, which lasted for 72 hours, three paste mixtures were used for comparison. The 72 hours early age drying shrinkage staring from the initial setting time was measured by a clock gauge. The pore size distribution was measured by Mercury Intrusion Method. The surface tension of capillary simulation liquid and mass loss of paste were also measured. The experimental results showed that the addition of SP increased the early drying shrinkage greatly. The ratios of water evaporation and the total free water in mixtures added with SPs showed great differences. SPs fined the capillary pores of paste, and the volume of pore with diameter within 50 nm was well consistent with shrinkage rate. The addition of SPs did not raise the capillary liquid surface tension. It showed that with the volume of pore with diameter within 50 nm and the ratio of water evaporation and the total free water a tolerable shrinkage result of paste added with SP could be predicted, and the elastic modulus could have an influence on the early shrinkage. These results have never been proposed before. 展开更多

An attempt was made to preserve mango slices by treating with 2% calcium chloride solution followed by dipping into sugar syrup of different concentrations i.e. 50°, 60° and 70 °Brix respectively. The treated slices were subjected for drying in different modes of drying (oven, microwave oven and cabinet tray drying) and analyzed for various physico-chemical and organoleptic quality characteristics. The study revealed that the osmo-air dried slices of mango produced with partial dehydration facilitated by osmotic agent (sugar syrup of 60 °Brix. A fruit: sugar syrup ratio of 1:4 (w/v) for 18 h at 40 ℃ temperature) followed by mechanical drying showed superiority in sensorial quality attributes over other concentrations of ingredients and the rest of the modes of drying. The good quality osmotically dehydrated mango slices could be preserved with maximum retentions of vitamins with better dehydration, rehydration and sensorial quality characteristics. 展开更多

The abnormal change in global climate has led to the warming up of north China and the drying up of the Yellow River (DUYR), which has become a serious environmental problem. DUYR can be traced back to ancient times, however. Due to abnormal changes in global climate, the entire basin of the Yellow River gets warm and dry. The reduced precipitation is concentrated in summer and occurs mostly in the form of rainstorms. The evaporation of water increases with the intensification of drought. Soil erosion raises the riverbed and increases the permeation and evaporation of river water, preventing surface runoffs in the middle and lower reaches from flowing into the mainstream of the Yellow River, thus causing its drying up. In a word, DUYR is a response to global climatic change and a natural result of the abnormal change in global climate. To address the issue, whole valley artificial rainfall, impoundment in the downstream low lying lands and other effective measures such as the initiative of water transfer from the south to the north can be taken. 展开更多

The significant demand for high quality food has motivated us to adopt appropriate processing methods to improve the food nutritional quality and flavors. In this study, the effects of five drying methods, namely, pulsed vacuum drying(PVD),freeze drying(FD),infrared drying(IRD),hot-air drying(HAD)and sun drying(SD)on free amino acids(FAAs),α-dicarbonyl compounds(α-DCs)and volatile compounds(VOCs)in rape bee pollen(RBP)were determined. The results showed that FD significantly released the essential amino acids(EAAs)compared with fresh samples while SD caused the highest loss.Glucosone was the dominantα-DCs in RBP and the highest loss was observed after PVD.Aldehydes were the dominant volatiles of RBP and SD samples contained more new volatile substances(especially aldehydes)than the other four drying methods.Comprehensively,FD and PVD would be potential methods to effectively reduce the quality deterioration of RBP in the drying process. 展开更多

As an important factor that directly affects agricultural production, the social economy, and policy implementation, observed changes in dry/wet conditions have become a matter of widespread concern. However, previous research has mainly focused on the long-term linear changes of dry/wet conditions, while the detection and evolution of the non-linear trends related to dry/wet changes have received less attention. The non-linear trends of the annual aridity index, obtained by the Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition(EEMD) method, reveal that changes in dry/wet conditions in China are asymmetric and can be characterized by contrasting features in both time and space in China. Spatially, most areas in western China have experienced transitions from drying to wetting, while opposite changes have occurred in most areas of eastern China. Temporally, the transitions occurred earlier in western China compared to eastern China. Research into the asymmetric spatial characteristics of dry/wet conditions compensates for the inadequacies of previous studies, which focused solely on temporal evolution;at the same time, it remedies the inadequacies of traditional research on linear trends over centennial timescales. Analyzing the non-linear trend also provides for a more comprehensive understanding of the drying/wetting changes in China. 展开更多

The effects of polynaphthalene series superplasticizers(PNS) with a low content of sodium sulfate (H-UNF),with a high content of sodium sulfate(C-UNF) and polycarboxylate type superplasticizer (PC) on strength and shrinkage cracking of cement mortar under drying conditions were investigated by means of multi-channel ellipse ring shrinkage cracking test, free shrinkage and strength test. The general effect of PNS and PC is to increase the initial cracking time of mortars, and decrease the cracking sensitivity of mortars. As for decreasing the cracking sensitivity of mortars, PC〉H-UNF〉C-UNF. To incorporate superplasticizers is apparently to increase the free shrinkage of mortars when keeping the constant w/b ratio and the content of cement pastes. As for the effect of controlling the volume stability of mortars, PC〉C-UNF〉H-UNF. Maximum crack width of mortars containing PC is lower, but the development rate of maximum crack width of mortars containing H-UNF is faster in comparison with control mortars. The flexural and compressive strengths of mortars at 28-day increase with increasing superplasticizer dosages under drying conditions. PC was superior to PNS in the aspect of increasing strength. 展开更多

Three-dimensional graphene-based aerogels have promising applications in oil adsorption and environmental restoration. However, current research of graphene-based aerogels is often hindered by high preparation cost, poor mechanical properties and low recycling efficiency. Here, superelastic graphene aerogel(SGA)was prepared through one-step freezing and twice hydrothermal reduction followed by drying under ambient pressure. The simple atmospheric drying provides a possibility for large-scale preparation of high performance graphene-based aerogels. The prepared SGA not only has the ability of highly repeatable compression rebound, but also exhibits excellent oil adsorption performance. And the overall performance of SGA is better than most of graphenebased aerogels prepared by freeze drying. After the SGA was cyclically compressed with 70%strain for 300 times,it can return to the original shape and height substantially.SGA retained about 90%of the initial adsorption capacity after 50 cycles of adsorption and compression regeneration for cyclohexane. 展开更多

This paper presents comparison and analysis of thermal-dynamic characteristics of air-drying and superheated steam drying under vacuum. The result reveals that for both convective heat transfer coefficient and resistance of mass transfer on the surface, superheated steam drying under vacuum is superior to air-drying under the same condition. With Masson pine as specimen, we found that the inversion temperature really exists through comparable experiments of air-drying and superheated steam drying under vacuum. When temperature is above inversion point of temperature, drying speed is faster than that of air-drying; however, if temperature is below the point, the result is opposite. Background:Drying is a necessary component of traditional Chinese medicine extracts. The heating principle of microwave vacuum drying is different from that of the conventional heat method. However,at present, there is paucity of information on the drying process of traditional Chinese medicine extract by microwave vacuum drying, and the results of such process are unclear. Methods:To study the dynamic changes in the chemical characteristics of microwave vacuum drying under different drying conditions,ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography fingerprint profiles were established using Radix isatidis extract as a model drug and analyzed using similarity analysis, partial least squares-discriminant analysis, and semi-quantitative analysis. In addition,a backpropagation artificial neural network model was developed to predict the moisture ratio of the drying process. Results:Qualitative results showed that the similarity between different drying conditions was greater than 0.95,and 2 amino acid components(peaks 5 and 6)affected by process fluctuations were screened out.The quantitative results showed that the mass concentration of component 1 fluctuated after drying, while that of component 2 increased. The optimal backpropagation artificial neural network model structure used to predict the moisture ratio was 5-4-1,with regression and mean squared error values of 0.996 and 0.0003,respectively,after training, which were well fitted and had a strong approximation ability. Conclusion:Upon comparison of fingerprints and the evaluation of statistical methods, common components of Radix isatidis extract had little variation under different drying conditions, and the selected components provided a reference for the establishment of process evaluation indexes. The establishment of backpropagation artificial neural network provides a theoretical basis for the application of microwave vacuum drying technology and online monitoring of moisture ratio. 展开更多

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the healing of drying cracks in air-dried bentonite-sand blocks after hydration and swelling in groundwater, providing justifications to simplify the protection of blocks prior to installation in a high-level radioactive waste repository.Synthetic groundwater was prepared to represent the geochemistry of Beishan groundwater, and was used to hydrate the blocks during the swelling pressure and swelling strain measurements,as Beishan is the most promising site for China's repository.Healing of the surface cracks was recorded by photography, and healing of the internal cracks was visualized by CT images and hydraulic conductivity of air-dried blocks. The results indicate that the maximum swelling pressure and swelling strain are primarily affected by the geochemistry of Beishan groundwater, but not affected by the drying cracks. The maximum swelling pressure and swelling strain of air-dried blocks are comparable to or even higher than the pressure and strain of fresh blocks. The maximum swelling pressure measured in strong(i.e.high ion strength)Beishan groundwater was 44%of the pressure measured in deionized(DI)water, and the maximum swelling strain was reduced to 23%of the strain measured in DI water.Nevertheless, the remained swelling of the blocks hydrated in strong Beishan groundwater was sufficient to heal the surface and internal drying cracks,as demonstrated by the pictures of surface cracks and CT images. The hydraulic conductivity of the air-dried block permeated with strong groundwater was comparable(3.7×higher)to the hydraulic conductivity of the fresh block, indicating the self-healing of drying cracks after hydration and swelling in groundwater.A simplified method of protecting the block with plastic wraps before installation is recommended, since the remained swelling of the block hydrated in Beishan groundwater is sufficient to heal the drying cracks. 展开更多
