Due to the novel applications of flexible pipes conveying fluid in the field of soft robotics and biomedicine, the investigations on the mechanical responses of the pipes have attracted considerable attention. The fluid-structure interaction(FSI)between the pipe with a curved shape and the time-varying internal fluid flow brings a great challenge to the revelation of the dynamical behaviors of flexible pipes, especially when the pipe is highly flexible and usually undergoes large deformations. In this work, the geometrically exact model(GEM)for a curved cantilevered pipe conveying pulsating fluid is developed based on the extended Hamilton's principle. The stability of the curved pipe with three different subtended angles is examined with the consideration of steady fluid flow.Specific attention is concentrated on the large-deformation resonance of circular pipes conveying pulsating fluid, which is often encountered in practical engineering.By constructing bifurcation diagrams, oscillating shapes, phase portraits, time traces, and Poincarémaps, the dynamic responses of the curved pipe under various system parameters are revealed. The mean flow velocity of the pulsating fluid is chosen to be either subcritical or supercritical. The numerical results show that the curved pipe conveying pulsating fluid can exhibit rich dynamical behaviors, including periodic and quasi-periodic motions. It is also found that the preferred instability type of a cantilevered curved pipe conveying steady fluid is mainly in the flutter of the second mode. For a moderate value of the mass ratio, however,a third-mode flutter may occur, which is quite different from that of a straight pipe system. 展开更多

Shear-thinning fluids have been widely used in microfluidic systems, but their internal flow mechanism is still unclear. Therefore,in this paper, molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the laminar flow of shear-thinning fluid in a microchannel. We validated the feasibility of our simulation method by evaluating the mean square displacement and Reynolds number of the solution layers. The results show that the change rule of the fluid system's velocity profile and interaction energy can reflect the shear-thinning characteristics of the fluids. The velocity profile resembles a top-hat shape, intensifying as the fluid's power law index decreases. The interaction energy between the wall and the fluid decreases gradually with increasing velocity, and a high concentration of non-Newtonian fluid reaches a plateau sooner. Moreover, the velocity profile of the fluid is related to the molecule number density distribution and their values are inversely proportional.By analyzing the radial distribution function,we found that the hydrogen bonds between solute and water molecules weaken with the increase in velocity. This observation offers an explanation for the shear-thinning phenomenon of the non-Newtonian flow from a micro perspective. 展开更多

This study developed a numerical model to efficiently treat solid waste magnesium nitrate hydrate through multi-step chemical reactions. The model simulates two-phase flow, heat, and mass transfer processes in a pyrolysis furnace to improve the decomposition rate of magnesium nitrate. The performance of multi-nozzle and single-nozzle injection methods was evaluated, and the effects of primary and secondary nozzle flow ratios, velocity ratios, and secondary nozzle inclination angles on the decomposition rate were investigated. Results indicate that multi-nozzle injection has a higher conversion efficiency and decomposition rate than single-nozzle injection, with a 10.3%higher conversion rate under the design parameters. The decomposition rate is primarily dependent on the average residence time of particles, which can be increased by decreasing flow rate and velocity ratios and increasing the inclination angle of secondary nozzles. The optimal parameters are injection flow ratio of 40%,injection velocity ratio of 0.6,and secondary nozzle inclination of 30°,corresponding to a maximum decomposition rate of 99.33%. 展开更多

On the basis of computational fluid dynamics, the flow field characteristics of multi-trophic artificial reefs, including the flow field distribution features of a single reef under three different velocities and the effect of spacing between reefs on flow scale and the flow state, were analyzed. Results indicate upwelling, slow flow, and eddy around a single reef.Maximum velocity, height, and volume of upwelling in front of a single reef were positively correlated with inflow velocity. The length and volume of slow flow increased with the increase in inflow velocity.Eddies were present both inside and backward, and vorticity was positively correlated with inflow velocity.Space between reefs had a minor influence on the maximum velocity and height of upwelling. With the increase in space from 0.5 L to 1.5 L(L is the reef lehgth),the length of slow flow in the front and back of the combined reefs increased slightly. When the space was 2.0 L,the length of the slow flow decreased. In four different spaces, eddies were present inside and at the back of each reef. The maximum vorticity was negatively correlated with space from 0.5 L to 1.5 L,but under 2.0 L space, the maximum vorticity was close to the vorticity of a single reef under the same inflow velocity. 展开更多

Geophysical fluid dynamics(GFD)is an interdisciplinary field that studies the large-scale motion of fluids in the natural world. With a wide range of applications such as weather forecasts and climate prediction,GFD employs various research approaches including in-situ observations, satellite measurements, numerical simulations, theoretical analysis, artificial intelligence, and physical model experiments in laboratory.Among these approaches, rotating tank experiments provide a valuable tool for simulating naturally-occurring fluid motions in laboratories. With proportional scaling and proper techniques, scientists can reproduce multi-scale physical processes of stratified fluids in the rotation system, which allows for the simulation of essential characteristics of fluid motions in the atmosphere and oceans. In this review, rotating tanks of various scales in the world are introduced,as these tanks have been actively used to explore fundamental scientific questions in ocean and atmosphere dynamics. To illustrate the GFD experiments, three representative cases are presented to demonstrate the frontier achievements in the the GFD study by using rotating tank experiments:mesoscale eddies in the ocean, convection processes, and plume dynamics.Detailed references for the experimental procedures are provided.Future studies are encouraged to further explore the utilization of rotating tanks with improvements in experimental design and integration of other research methods. This is a promising direction of GFD to help enhance our understanding of the complex nature of fluid motions in the natural world and to address the challenges posed by global environmental changes. 展开更多

Recent industrial explosions globally have intensified the focus in mechanical engineering on designing infras-tructure systems and networks capable of withstanding blast loading.Initially centered on high-profile facilities such as embassies and petrochemical plants, this concern now extends to a wider array of infrastructures and facilities.Engineers and scholars increasingly prioritize structural safety against explosions, particularly to prevent disproportionate collapse and damage to nearby structures.Urbanization has further amplified the reliance on oil and gas pipelines, making them vital for urban life and prime targets for terrorist activities.Consequently, there is a growing imperative for computational engineering solutions to tackle blast loading on pipelines and mitigate associated risks to avert disasters. In this study,an empty pipe model was successfully validated under contact blast conditions using Abaqus software,a powerful tool in mechanical engineering for simulating blast effects on buried pipelines.Employing a Eulerian-Lagrangian computational fluid dynamics approach, the investigation extended to above-surface and below-surface blasts at standoff distances of 25 and 50 mm.Material descriptions in the numerical model relied on Abaqus’default mechanical models.Comparative analysis revealed varying pipe performance, with deformation decreasing as explosion-to-pipe distance increased. The explosion’s location relative to the pipe surface notably influenced deformation levels,a key finding highlighted in the study. Moreover, quantitative findings indicated varying ratios of plastic dissipation energy(PDE)for different blast scenarios compared to the contact blast(P0).Specifically,P1(25 mm subsurface blast)and P2(50 mm subsurface blast)showed approximately 24.07%and 14.77%of P0’s PDE,respectively, while P3(25 mm above-surface blast)and P4(50 mm above-surface blast)exhibited lower PDE values, accounting for about 18.08%and 9.67%of P0’s PDE,respectively.Utilising energy-absorbing materials such as thin coatings of ultra-high-strength concrete, metallic foams, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer wraps, and others on the pipeline to effectively mitigate blast damage is recommended. This research contributes to the advancement of mechanical engineering by providing insights and solutions crucial for enhancing the resilience and safety of underground pipelines in the face of blast events. 展开更多

The Wangjiazhuang Cu(-Mo)deposit,located within the Zouping volcanic basin in western Shandong Province,China,is unique in this area for having an economic value. In order to expound the metallogenetic characteristics of this porphyry-like hydrothermal deposit,a detailed fluid inclusion study has been conducted, employing the techniques of representative sampling, fluid inclusion petrography, microthermometry,Raman spectroscopy,LA-ICP-MS analysis of single fluid inclusions,as well as cathode fluorescence spectrometer analysis of host mineral quartz. The deposit contains mainly two types of orebodies,i.e.veinlet-dissemination-stockwork orebodies in the K-Si alteration zone and pegmatiticquartz sulfide veins above them.In addition, minor breccia ore occurs locally.Four types of fluid inclusions in the deposit and altered quartz monzonite are identified:L-type one-or two-phase aqueous inclusions,V-type vapor-rich inclusions with V/L ratios greater than 50%-90%,D-type multiphase fluid inclusions containing daughter minerals or solids and S-type silicate-bearing fluid inclusions containing mainly muscovite and biotite.Ore petrography and fluid inclusion study has revealed a three-stage mineralization process, driven by magmatic-hydrothermal fluid activity,as follows.Initially,a hydrothermal fluid, separated from the parent magma, infiltrated into the quartz monzonite, resulting in its extensive K-Si alteration,as indicated by silicate-bearing fluid inclusions trapped in altered quartz monzonite. This is followed by the early mineralization, the formation of quartz veinlets and dissemination-stockwork ores.During the main mineralization stage, due to the participation and mixing of meteoric groundwater with magmatic-sourced hydrothermal fluid, the cooling and phase separation caused deposition of metals from the hydrothermal fluids. As a result, the pegmatitic-quartz sulfide-vein ores formed. In the late mineralization stage, decreasing fluid salinity led to the formation of L-type aqueous inclusions and chalcopyrite-sulfosalt ore.Coexistence of V-type and D-type inclusions and their similar homogenization temperatures with different homogenization modes suggest that phase separation or boiling of the ore-forming fluids took place during the early and the main mineralization stages. The formation P-T conditions of S-type inclusions and the early and the main mineralization stages were estimated as ca.156-182 MPa and 450-650℃,350-450℃,18-35 MPa and 280-380℃,8-15 MPa,respectively, based on the microthermometric data of the fluid inclusions formed at the individual stages. 展开更多

Background:The assessment of renal function is important to the prognosis of patients needing Fontan palliation due to the reconstructed compromised circulation. To know the relationship between the kidney perfusion and hemodynamic characteristics during surgical design could reduce the risk of acute kidney injury(AKI)and the postoperative complications. However, the issue is still unsolved because the current clinical evaluation methods are unable to predict the hemodynamic changes in renal artery(RA).Methods:We reconstructed a three-dimensional(3D)vascular model of a patient requiring Fontan palliation. The technique of computational fluid dynamics(CFD)was utilized to explore the changes of RA hemodynamics under different possible blood flow rates. The relationship between the kidney perfusion and hemodynamic characteristics was investigated. Results:The calculated results indicated the declined tendency of the pressure and pressure drop as the flow rate decreased. When the flow rate decreased to two-thirds of its baseline, both the pressure of left renal artery(LRA)and the pressure of right renal artery(RRA)dipped below 50%,and the pressure of RRA fell more quickly than that of LRA.Uneven distribution of WSS was observed on the trunk of RA,and the lowest WSS was found at the distal of RA.The average WSS in RA dropped to around 50%as the flow rate reached one-third of its baseline. Conclusions:As a promising approach,CFD can be utilized to quantitatively evaluate the hemodynamic characteristics of RA and contribute to offsetting the drawbacks of clinical assessments of renal function,to help realize better prognosis for the patients with Fontan palliation. 展开更多

This paper presents a time-efficient numerical approach to modelling high explosive(HE)blastwave propagation using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD).One of the main issues of using conventional CFD modelling in high explosive simulations is the ability to accurately define the initial blastwave properties that arise from the ignition and consequent explosion.Specialised codes often employ Jones-Wilkins-Lee(JWL)or similar equation of state(EOS)to simulate blasts. However, most available CFD codes are limited in terms of EOS modelling. They are restrictive to the Ideal Gas Law(IGL)for compressible flows, which is generally unsuitable for blast simulations. To this end, this paper presents a numerical approach to simulate blastwave propagation for any generic CFD code using the IGL EOS.A new method known as the Input Cavity Method(ICM)is defined where input conditions of the high explosives are given in the form of pressure, velocity and temperature time-history curves. These time history curves are input at a certain distance from the centre of the charge. It is shown that the ICM numerical method can accurately predict over-pressure and impulse time history at measured locations for the incident, reflective and complex multiple reflection scenarios with high numerical accuracy compared to experimental measurements. The ICM is compared to the Pressure Bubble Method(PBM),a common approach to replicating initial conditions for a high explosive in Finite Volume modelling. It is shown that the ICM outperforms the PBM on multiple fronts, such as peak values and overall overpressure curve shape. Finally, the paper also presents the importance of choosing an appropriate solver between the Pressure Based Solver(PBS)and Density-Based Solver(DBS)and provides the advantages and disadvantages of either choice. In general,it is shown that the PBS can resolve and capture the interactions of blastwaves to a higher degree of resolution than the DBS.This is achieved at a much higher computational cost, showing that the DBS is much preferred for quick turnarounds. 展开更多

Air brake systems are critical equipment for railway trains, which affects the running safety of the trains significantly. To study air braking characteristics of long freight trains, an approach for simulating air brake systems based on fuid dynamics theory was proposed. The structures and working mechanisms of locomotive and wagon air brakes are introduced, and mathematical models of the pipes, brake valves, reservoirs or chambers, cylinders, etc., are presented.Besides, the dynamic motions of parts in the main valve are considered. The simulation model of the whole air brake system is then formulated, and the solving method based on the finite-difference method is used. New efficient pipe boundary conditions without iterations are developed for brake pipes and branch pipes, which can achieve higher computational efficiency. The proposed approach for simulating the air brake system is validated by comparing with published measured data. Simulation results of different train formations indicate that models that consider the dynamic behavior of brake pipes are recommended for predicting the characteristics of long trains under service braking conditions. 展开更多

Computational fluid dynamics(CFD)provides a powerful tool for investigating complicated fluid flows. This paper aims to study the applicability of CFD in the preliminary design of linear and nonlinear fluid viscous dampers. Two fluid viscous dampers were designed based on CFD models. The first device was a linear viscous damper with straight orifices. The second was a nonlinear viscous damper containing a one-way pressure-responsive valve inside its orifices. Both dampers were detailed based on CFD simulations, and their internal fluid flows were investigated.Full-scale specimens of both dampers were manufactured and tested under dynamic loads.According to the tests results, both dampers demonstrate stable cyclic behaviors, and as expected, the nonlinear damper generally tends to dissipate more energy compared to its linear counterpart.Good compatibility was achieved between the experimentally measured damper force-velocity curves and those estimated from CFD analyses.Using a thermography camera,a rise in temperature of the dampers was measured during the tests. It was found that output force of the manufactured devices was virtually independent of temperature even during long duration loadings.Accordingly, temperature dependence can be ignored in CFD models, because a reliable temperature compensator mechanism was used(or intended to be used)by the damper manufacturer. 展开更多

A three-dimensional model for gas-solid flow in a circulating fluidized bed(CFB) riser was developed based on computational particle fluid dynamics(CPFD).The model was used to simulate the gas-solid flow behavior inside a circulating fluidized bed riser operating at various superficial gas velocities and solids mass fluxes in two fluidization regimes,a dilute phase transport(DPT) regime and a fast fluidization(FF) regime. The simulation results were evaluated based on comparison with experimental data of solids velocity and holdup, obtained from non-invasive automated radioactive particle tracking and gamma-ray tomography techniques, respectively. The agreement of the predicted solids velocity and holdup with experimental data validated the CPFD model for the CFB riser. The model predicted the main features of the gas-solid flows in the two regimes;the uniform dilute phase in the DPT regime, and the coexistence of the dilute phase in the upper region and the dense phase in the lower region in the FF regime. The clustering and solids back mixing in the FF regime were stronger than those in the DPT regime. 展开更多

The Wulasigou Cu-Pb-Zn deposit, located 15 km northwest of Altay city in Xinjiang,is one of many Cu-Pb-Zn polymetallic deposits in the Devonian Kelan volcanic-sedimentary basin in southern Altaids. Two mineralizing periods can be distinguished:the marine volcanic sedimentary PbZn mineralization period, and the metamorphic hydrothermal Cu mineralization period, which is further divided into an early bedded foliated quartz vein stage(Q1) and a late sulfide-quartz vein stage(Q2) crosscutting the foliation.Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized in the Q1 and Q2 quartz from the east orebodies of the Wulasigou deposit:H2O-CO2 inclusions, carbonic fluid inclusions, aqueous fluid inclusions, and daughter mineral-bearing fluid inclusions.Microthermometric studies show that solid CO2 melting temperatures(T(m,CO2)) of H2O-CO2 inclusions in Ql are from-62.3℃ to-58.5C,clathrate melting temperatures(T(m,clath)l) are from 0.5 C to 7.5 C,partial homogenization temperatures(T(h,CO2)) vary from 3.3℃ to 25.9℃(to liquid),and the total homogenization temperatures(T(h,tot)) vary from 285℃ to 378℃,with the salinities being 4.9%-15.1%NaCl eqv.and the CO2-phase densities being 0.50-0.86 g/cm-3.H2O-CO2 inclusions in Q2 have T(m,CO2) from-61.9℃ to-56.9℃,T(m,clath)from 1.3℃ to 9.5℃,T(h,CO2) from 3.4℃ to 28.7℃(to liquid),and T(h,tot) from 242℃ to 388℃,with the salinities being 1.0%-15.5%NaCl eqv.and the CO2-phase densities being 0.48-0.89 g/cm-3.The minimum trapping pressures of fluid inclusions in Q1 and Q2 are estimated to be 260-360 MPa and180-370 MPa,respectively. The δ-(34)S values of pyrite from the volcanic sedimentary period vary from2.3‰ to 2.8‰(CDT),and those from the sulfide-quartz veins fall in a narrow range of-1.9‰ to 2.6‰(CDT).The δD values of fluid inclusions in Q2 range from-121.0‰ to-100.8‰(SMOW),and theδ-(18)O(H2O) values calculated from δ-(18)O of quartz range from-0.2‰ to 8.3‰(SMOW).The δD-δ-(18)O(H2O)data are close to the magmatic and metamorphic fields. The fluid inclusion and stable isotope data documented in this study indicate that the vein-type copper mineralization in the Wulasigou Pb-Zn-Cu deposit took place in an orogenic-metamorphic enviroment. 展开更多

Haigou gold deposit is a typical orogenic gold deposit. There are a reasonable amount of fluid inclusions in the gold deposit, including three types: CO2-H2O-Na Cl inclusions, pure CO2 inclusions and Na Cl-H2 O inclusions,of which most of them are CO2-bearing inclusions. The fluid salinity is 1. 43%- 9. 08%,mainly concentrated in the range of 4. 69%- 5. 41%,the density of CO2 is 0. 69- 0. 80 g / cm3,indicating that the mineralization fluid is low-medium salinity and low density fluid. A series of studies on gold-bearing quartz vein and fluid inclusions show that there exists a positive correlation between the degree of the gold mi-neralization and the amount of CO2 in the inclusions, which means the more CO2-bearing inclusions there are,the higher the content of gold is. CO2 is mainly derived from mantle fluid, and the ore-forming fluid should be derived from mantle fluid and the crust shallow fluid. The conclusions have important denotative meaning on the metallogenic mechanism of orogenic gold deposit and the deep prospecting on metal deposit. 展开更多

The permanent vascular implant of a stent, however, changes the intra-stent blood flow hemodynamics. There is a growing consensus that the stent implant may change the artery wall shear stress distribution and hence lead to the restenosis process. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been widely used to analyze hemodynamics in stented arteries. In this paper, two CFD models (the axisymmetric model and the 3-D stent model) were developed to investigate the effects of strut geometry and blood rheology on the intra-stent hemodynamics. The velocity profile, flow recirculation, and wall shear stress distribution of various stent strut geometries were studied. Results show strong correlations between the intra-stent hemodynamics and strut geometry. The intra-stent blood flow is very sensitive to the strut height and fillet size. A round strut with a large fillet size shows 36% and 34% reductions in key parameters evaluating the restenosis risk for the axisymmetric model and the 3-D stent model, respectively. This suggests that electrochemical polishing, a surface-improving process during stent manufacturing, strongly influences the hemodynamic behavior in stented arteries and should be controlled precisely in order to achieve the best clinical outcome. Rheological effects on the wall shear stress are minor in both axisymmetric and 3-D stent models for the vessel diameter of 4 mm, with Newtonian flow simulation tending to give more conservative estimates ofrestenosis risk. Therefore, it is reasonable to simulate the blood flow as a Newtonian flow in stented arteries using the simpler axisymmetric model. These findings will provide great insights for stent design optimization for potential restenosis improvement. 展开更多

Some methods have already been proposed to analysis the flow field of journal bearings, and in most of these methods simplified physical model and classic Reynolds equation are always applied. While the application of the general computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-fluid structure interaction (FSI) techniques is more beneficial for analysis of the fluid field in a journal bearing when more detailed solutions are needed. This paper deals with the quasi-coupling calculation of transient fluid dynamics of oil film in journal bearings and rotor dynamics with CFD-FSI techniques. The fluid dynamics of oil film is calculated by applying the so-called "dynamic mesh" technique. A new mesh movement approacb is presented while the dynamic mesh models provided by FLUENT are not suitable for the transient oil flow in journal bearings. The proposed mesh movement approach is based on the structured mesh. When the joumal moves, the movement distance of every grid in the flow field of bearing can be calculated, and then the update of the volume mesh can be handled automatically by user defined function (UDF). The journal displacement at each time step is obtained by solving the moving equations of the rotor-bearing system under the known oil film force condition. A case study is carried out to calculate the locus of the journal center and pressure distribution of the journal in order to prove the feasibility of this method. The calculating results indicate that the proposed method can predict the transient flow field of a journal bearing in a rotor-bearing system where more realistic models are involved. The presented calculation method provides a basis for studying the nonlinear dynamic behavior of a general rotor-bearing system. 展开更多

This paper deals with the three-dimensional dynamics and postbuckling behavior of flexible supported pipes conveying fluid, considering flow velocities lower and higher than the critical value at which the buckling instability occurs. In the case of low flow velocity, the pipe is stable with a straight equilibrium position and the dynamics of the system can be examined using linear theory. When the flow velocity is beyond the critical value, any motions of the pipe could be around the postbuckling configuration(non-zero equilibrium position) rather than the straight equilibrium position, so nonlinear theory is required. The nonlinear equations of perturbed motions around the postbuckling configuration are derived and solved with the aid of Galerkin discretization. It is found, for a given flow velocity, that the first-mode frequency for in-plane motions is quite different from that for out-of-plane motions. However, the second-or third-mode frequencies for in-plane motions are approximately equal to their counterparts for out-of-plane motions, keeping almost constant values with increasing flow velocity. Moreover, the orientation angle of the postbuckling configuration plane for a buckled pipe can be significantly affected by initial conditions, displaying new features which have not been observed in the same pipe system factitiously supposed to deform in a single plane. 展开更多

The Lanping sedimentary basin has experienced a five-stage evolution since the late Paleozoic: ocean-continent transformation (late Paleozoic to early mid-Triassic); intracontinental rift basin (late mid-Triassic to early Jurassic); down-warped basin (middle to late Jurassic); foreland basin (Cretaceous); and strike-slip basin (Cenozoic). Three major genetic types of Ag-Cu polymetallic ore deposits, including the reworked hydrothermal sedimentary, sedimentary-hydrothermally reworked and hydrothermal vein types, are considered to be the products of basin fluid activity at specific sedimentary-tectonic evolutionary stages. Tectonic differences of the different evolutionary stages resulted in considerable discrepancy in the mechanisms of formation-transportation, migration direction and emplacement processes of the basin fluids, thus causing differences in mineralization styles as well as in genetic types of ore deposit. 展开更多
