Background: This study assessed the effect of a nutrition education intervention. This intervention aimed to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of mothers on food safety in the peri-urban areas of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. Methods: A total of 243 mothers of children under 5 years in the peri-urban of Bobo-Dioulasso were administered the FAO questionnaire for food safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices assessment during two cross-sectional surveys, before and after the intervention, in January and October 2017. The intervention included two components consisting of a theoretical phase (counselling and discussion) and cooking demonstrations implemented for ten months. To account for the before-and-after design of the study, the McNemar’s test was used to assess the effect of the intervention on food safety KAP of mothers of children under 5 years. Results: The mean age of mothers was 29 ± 6.2 years and 50.6% of them were between 20 and 29 years old. One for knowledge (cooking thoroughly with, p-value = 0.0001) and another for attitudes (perceived benefits of reheating leftovers before eating them, p-value = 0.0001), significantly increased after the intervention. In terms of food safety practices, all the indicators (cleaning of dirty surfaces, plates and utensils and storage of perishable foods) significantly increased (all p = 0.0001 Conclusion: This study provided some evidence of an effective nutrition education intervention for improving maternal KAP on food safety for their child’s feeding. 展开更多

Autism spectrum disorder(ASD)is often diagnosed long after symptoms have become noticeable. This delay can make it difficult to provide early intervention, which can impact long-term outcomes. The concept of"pre-autism"highlights the phase before a formal diagnosis of ASD,providing an opportunity for earlier identification and intervention, which could be a turning point in ASD management. In a previous article,we explored different ways of diagnosing pre-autism,including historical records, physical markers, laboratory tests, and radiological evidence. This manuscript builds on that foundation by emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in ASD.Recent research advancements have clarified that ASD presentations can be complex, and individualized support strategies are necessary. The significance of pre-autism lies in its potential to alter the trajectory of ASD through early detection and intervention despite challenges such as limited awareness and variability in symptom presentation.Biomarkers and diagnostic tools have shown promise as avenues for early detection, but it is essential to exercise caution and not rely too heavily on yet-tobe-established markers.Addressing these challenges requires a collaborative effort to increase awareness, improve access to diagnostic tools, and foster inclusive environments.Ultimately, this manuscript calls for ongoing research, advocacy, and resource allocation to enhance early detection and intervention efforts, ensuring optimal outcomes for individuals on the autism spectrum. 展开更多

Currently,a proportion of adolescents use alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs, which inevitably harms their health and academic progress.Adolescence is a peak period for substance use initiation and a critical time for preventing substance use problems.Various entities, such as families, schools, and communities, have implemented a variety of interventions to alleviate adolescent substance use problems, and schools play a unique role.To explore the types, characteristics, and effectiveness of substance use interventions in educational settings for adolescents,we conducted a scoping review and identified 32 studies after screening. We divided the 32 studies according to intervention type, including curriculum interventions focusing on cognitive-behavioral skill enhancement, exercise interventions, peer interventions and family-school cooperation, and electronic interventions.Except for the mixed results on electronic interventions, the results showed that the other interventions were beneficial to different extents in alleviating adolescent substance use problems. In addition,we analyzed and summarized the advantages and challenges of intervening in adolescent substance use in educational settings.Schools can use equipment and human resources to provide adolescents with various types of intervention measures, but they also face challenges such as stigmatization, ineffective coordination among multiple resources, and poor implementation effects. In the future,school-based intervention measures can fully utilize big data and artificial intelligence technology and collaborate with families and communities to intervene appropriately while paying attention to the comorbidity risks of substance use disorders and psychological health issues. 展开更多

A lack of partner support is a key factor associated with perinatal depression. This study examined the effects of an educational intervention that provided information for the prevention and early detection of postpartum depression to first-time mothers and fathers who participated in a “First-Time Parent Class.” The study was utilized quasi-experimental research, conducted first with the control group and followed by an assessment of the intervention group. Mothers were assessed using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale and the Japan Child and Family Research Institute Child-Rearing Support Questionnaire. Fathers’ assessments were conducted using the Japan Child and Family Research Institute Child-Rearing Support Questionnaire for Fathers and were based on responses to questions regarding their coping strategies. Data were obtained from 158 data (72 interventions, 86 controls) couples analyzed. No significant difference was found between mothers’ child-rearing difficulty and depression score rates in the first month after childbirth. There was a difference among fathers in the control group and those in the intervention group regarding their responses to maternal depression: the “consult family” (p = 0.035), “consult friends” (p = 0.033), and “consult the city health center” (p = 0.047) variables were higher in the intervention group;however, the effect size was small. Providing first-time parents with information during pregnancy to prevent and detect postpartum depression will deepen parents’ understanding and help them cope with postpartum depression. 展开更多

Research Background: The high prevalence of diabetes in Sudan, estimated at 16%, highlights the importance of effective health education in diabetes management. Diabetes self-management education has been identified as a crucial tool in enhancing the knowledge, attitudes, and abilities necessary for self-management among individuals with diabetes. Aim: To assess the impact of diabetes self-management education on medication adherence and glycemic control in Sudanese adults with type 2 diabetes before and 3 months after the DSME intervention. Method: The study was conducted in Sudan between September 2022 and March 2023, it was an interventional, one-group, pre- and post-test study that aimed to assess the impact of diabetes self-management education (DSME) on medication adherence and diabetes control in Sudanese adults with type 2 diabetes. The research was conducted in primary health care centers in six cities in Sudan and involved 244 participants. The data entry and statistical analysis were conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27.0. A paired t test was used for analysis. Results: The study included 244 participants, 67% of whom were males. The age mean ± SD was 48.6 ± 9.3 years, and 85.3% of participants were married. Age at onset of diabetes mean ± SD was 40.60 ± 7.81 years;44.6% had diabetes for less than 5 years;and 84.1% had a positive family history of diabetes mellitus. The levels of poor, low, and partial adherence to medication decreased by 8.2%, 4%, and 20.6%, respectively, after the intervention. The levels of good and high medication regime adherence increased by 13% and 19.8%, respectively;BMI decreased by 1.1 ± 0.73 kg/m2 (p = 0.005). The fasting blood sugar decreased by 69 ± 32.9 mg/dl (p = 0.049), and the glycated hemoglobin decreased by 1.21 ± 0.28% (p = 0.001). Conclusions: The findings of this study reinforce the importance of patient education in improving glycemic control and enhancing self-management behaviors. Patient education plays a critical role in enhancing glycemic control and self-management behaviors. It is essential for healthcare providers to adopt a patient-centered approach, taking into account the individual's beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge about their illness and treatment. Overcoming these challenges necessitates a comprehensive approach, including enhancing healthcare professionals’ knowledge and communication skills, offering accessible and culturally sensitive diabetes education programs, and addressing barriers to resources and support for self-management. 展开更多

Background: Non-adherence to tuberculosis (TB) treatment might prolong disease transmission and also increases the risk of drug resistance. Various studies have been carried out to determine the predictors of non-adherence but intervention-based studies to address treatment adherence are scarce. This study intends to estimate the treatment adherence rates following delivery of patient-centered health education videos in the intervention tuberculosis unit (TU) and to compare the treatment adherence with that in the comparison TU. Methods: An interventional study was conducted in two TUs of Bengaluru urban district among all newly diagnosed TB cases on daily regimen treatment over a period of three months from November 2017 to January 2018. A patient centered health education video was developed and shown by the treatment supporters to all eligible participants consenting to participate in the intervention TU. The video was shown once at the beginning of intensive phase treatment and once in the continuation phase of treatment. A total of 100 patients, 21 from intervention TU and 79 from comparison TU formed the study sample. Patient details were obtained from their treatment cards. Data on missed doses per month per patient were also noted. Data were entered into Microsoft excel worksheet and analyzed using statistical package for social sciences. Data are expressed as frequency and percentages. Chi-square test was applied to compare groups. Results: The majority of the study participants were aged between 25 - 44 years. Equal distribution of cases was seen among males and females. Intervention TU had significantly higher number of pulmonary TB cases. Treatment adherence rates were 90.5% and 84.8% at end of intensive phase and 85% and 71.4% at end of continuation phase in the intervention and comparison TU respectively, and this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Use of mobile video-based health education showed better treatment rates and was found to improve TB treatment adherence. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Colonoscopy attendance is a key quality parameter in colorectal cancer population screening programmes.Within these programmes, educative interventions with bidirectional contact carried out by trained personnel have been proved to be an important tool for colonoscopy attendance improvement, and because of its huge clinical and economic impact, they have been widely implemented. However, outside of this population programmes, educative measures to improve colonoscopy attendance have been poorly studied and no navigation interventions are usually performed.AIM To investigate the clinical and economic impacts of an educational telephone intervention on colonoscopy attendance outside colorectal cancer screening programmes.METHODS This randomized controlled trial included consecutive patients referred to colonoscopy from primary care centres from November 2017 to May 2018.The intervention group(IG)received a telephone intervention, while the control group(CG)did not.Patients assigned to the IG received an educational telephone call 7 d before the colonoscopy appointment. The intervention was carried out by two nurses with deep endoscopic knowledge who were previously trained for a telephone educational intervention for colonoscopy. The impact on patient compliance with preparedness protocols related to bowel cleansing, antithrombotic management, and sedation scheduling was also evaluated.A second call was conducted to assess patient satisfaction.Intention-to-treat(ITT)and perprotocol(PP)analyses were performed.RESULTS A total of 738 and 746 patients were finally included in the IG and CG respectively.Six hundred thirteen(83%)patients were contacted in the IG.The non-attendance rate was lower in the IG,both in the ITT analysis(IG 8.4%vs CG 14.3%,P<0.001)and in the PP analysis(4.4%vs 14.3%,P<0.001).In a multivariable analysis, belonging to the control group increased the risk of nonattendance in both, the ITT analysis(OR 1.81,95%CI:1.27 to 2.58,P=0.001)and the PP analysis(OR 3.56,95%CI:2.25 to 5.64,P<0.001).There was also a significant difference in compliance with preparedness protocols[bowel cleansing:IG 61.7%vs CG 52.6%(P=0.001),antithrombotic management:IG 92.5%vs CG 62.8%(P=0.001),and sedation scheduling:IG 78.8%vs CG 0%(P≤0.001)].We observed a net benefit of €55600/year after the intervention. The information given before the procedure was rated as excellent by 26%(CG)and 51%(IG)of patients,P≤0.001.CONCLUSION Educational telephone nurse intervention improves attendance, protocol compliance and patient satisfaction in the non-screening colonoscopy setting and has a large economic impact, which supports its imple-mentation and maintenance over time. 展开更多
