There were 25 h of PMSE echoes with EISCAT UHF radar. PMSE echoes were mostly observed only during the early morning and fore-noon time. Moreover, the PMSE echoes are positively correlated with Lymanα radiation, but the correlation is non-significant. The occurrence of PMSE echoes in the early morning and fore-noon time and there positive correlation with Lymanαradiation suggests that solar radiations might be one important factor for PMSE echoes in this study. Very weak positive, but statistically non-significant correlation is found between PMSE occurrence rate and the local geomagneticK-indices. It is found that there is a matching between the variation in the occurrence rate of PMSE and noctilucent clouds (NLC) up to some extent and they are positively correlated. This positive correlation might support the earlier proposed idea about the role of ice particle size in producing PMSE echoes at higher frequencies.展开更多

Different series of echoes properties are not identified when incident angle is unknown. This article investigates variations in target echoes of monostatic sonar to address this problem. The mother wavelet with similar structures has been proposed on the basis of preprocessing signal waveform using matched filter, and the theoretical expressions between delay factor and incident angle are derived in the wavelet domain. Analysis of simulation data and experimental results in free-field pool show that this method can effectively separate geometrical scattering components of target echoes. The aspect sensitivity of PMSE using this radar and at such a high frequency has not been previously reported. Data concerning the aspect sensitivity of PMSE were collected by traversing the antenna beam from the zenith direction, and comparing the received power. Surprisingly, as the intensity received by the oblique beam was often larger than that of the vertical beam, suggesting the presence of tilted dusty plasma layers as a potential cause, a theoretical model was developed to confirm the existence of these layers and their formation process. The results show that most rainstorms are convective in whichlightning is mostly negative and the negative lightning number accounts for more than 90% of the total.Although the correlation between precipitation and the lightning number is small on the rainstorm day, thelarge day-lightning frequency usually produces heavy precipitation. Hourly evolution of precipitation andlightning frequency shows peak-style characteristics. And their evolution is very coherent in strongrainstorm, but lightning often occurs before precipitation, whose peaks are in phase with or 1-to-2-hourlagged behind that of lightning frequency. Meanwhile the peaks of positive frequency are in phase with orfall behind that of precipitation. When the wind field is heterogeneous in radial velocity, it is conducive toboth the development of convection echoes and occurrence of lightning. Strong lightning-producingconvective rainstorms correspond to strong echo fields and usually result in reflectivity above 30 dBZ andecho top ET of more than 9 km, respectively.展开更多

The result shows the followings. The concentrated period in which more negative lightning occurred at the middle levels (2 - 14 km), where radar echo was moderate (12 - 45 dBz), rather than at the low levels with the weakest echoes or at high levels with the strongest echoes. At levels 3 - 11 km, where the radar echo was between 10 dBz and 35 dBz, the area of negative lightning was much larger in central Guangdong than in the rest of the province. At levels 0.5 - 7 krn where the radar echoes were between 44 dBz and 51 dBz, the probability for a point to have negative lightning varies from 0.4 to 0.7.展开更多

To remove isolated non-meteorological echoes, the new algorithm introduces a constraint parameter (Po) to distinguish whether a window of 5 x 5 points is isolated as external echoes. A statistical analysis of 150 radar scans (5 cases, with each case comprising 30 scans) under three different echo types (small-scale convec-tion, typhoon, and large-scale synoptic system) shows that the constraint parameter Po ≤ 0.167 is suitable for remov- ing isolated non-meteorological echoes while preserving the edge of meteorological echoes. A new parameter, NDZ, which promotes the ability of the algorithm to identify the ground clutters appearing at two adjacent elevation angles, is constructed based on the vertical continuity of reflectivity. These improved algorithms are tested for four cases (three cases of isolated non-meteorological echoes and one case of ground clutters). Based on the statistics of 232 volume scans of radar data (on a temporal resolution of 1 h) measured at Nanchang station from 0000 UTC 5 to 1600 UTC 14 March 2015, it is found that the improved algorithms not only eliminate most (over 95% under clear-sky conditions) of the isolated non-meteorological echoes and ground clutters (including those appearing at two adjacent elevation angles), but also well preserve the structure of meteorological echoes (storms).展开更多

文摘Radar echoes intensity of polar mesosphere summer echoes(PMSE) is greatly affected by the temperature of dusty plasma and the frequency of electromagnetic wave about the radar. In this paper,a new method is developed to explain the active experiment results of PMSE.The theory of wave propagation in a layered media is used to study the propagation characteristics of an electromagnetic wave at different electron temperatures. The simulation results show that the variation tendency of the reflected power fraction almost agrees with the results observed by radar in the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association(EISCAT).The radar echoes intensity of PMSE greatly decreases with the increase of the radio frequency and the enhancement of the electron temperature.

文摘Based on cloud-ground lightning data and Doppler weather radar echo products, both thecharacteristics and the relations of lightning and radar echoes for strong convective rainstorms over Yunnanare analyzed during the flood season of 2007. Strong lightning-producingconvective rainstorms correspond to strong echo fields and usually result in reflectivity above 30 dBZ andecho top ET of more than 9 km, respectively.

文摘A major issue in radar quantitative precipitation estimation is the contamination of radar echoes by non-meteorological targets such as ground clutter, chaff, clear air echoes etc.In this study,a fuzzy logic algorithm for the identification of non-meteorological echoes is developed using optimized membership functions and weights for the dual-polarization radar located at Mount Sobaek. For selected precipitation and non-meteorological events, the characteristics of the precipitation and non-meteorological echo are derived by the probability density functions of five fuzzy parameters as functions of reflectivity values. The membership functions and weights are then determined by these density functions. Finally, the nonmeteorological echoes are identified by combining the membership functions and weights. The performance is qualitatively evaluated by long-term rain accumulation. The detection accuracy of the fuzzy logic algorithm is calculated using the probability of detection(POD),false alarm rate(FAR),and clutter–signal ratio(CSR).In addition, the issues in using filtered dual-polarization data are alleviated.

文摘For pulse Doppler radars, the widely used method for identifying second-trip echoes(STs)in the signal processing level yields significant misidentification in regions of high turbulence and severe wind shear. In the data processing level, although the novel algorithm for ST identification does not yield significant misidentification in specific regions, its overall identification performance is not ideal. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid method for the identification of STs using phase modulation(signal processing)and polarimetric technology(data processing).Through this approach, most of the STs are removed, whereas most of the first-trip echoes(FTs)remain untouched.Compared with the existing method using a signal quality index filter with an optimized threshold, the hybrid method exhibits superior performance(Heidke skill scores of 0.98 versus 0.88)on independent test datasets, especially in high-turbulence and severe-wind-shear regions, for which misidentification is significantly reduced.
文摘Based on the CINRAD Doppler radar data in Guangzhou and the lightning data in 2004 by power suppliers of Guangdong, statistical study is done by overlaying lightning's position on radar's echo. At levels 0.5 - 7 krn where the radar echoes were between 44 dBz and 51 dBz, the probability for a point to have negative lightning varies from 0.4 to 0.7.

文摘Based on the puzzle data of radar reflectivity in and around Jiangxi Province, the slope profile method and the polar coordinate method were used to display the vertical profiles of radar echoes between any two points. The technical route of extracting radar echo profile data by the slope method was proposed and applied to the short-term early warning platform of Jiangxi Province.A thunderstorm weather process occurring from Dongxiang to Wannian on September 23,2018 was analyzed by radar echo profiles. At present, the program has been applied to the short-term early warning platform of Jiangxi Province based on B/S architecture. The automatic drawing and display of radar echo profiles of any two points is practical for forecasters to quickly and effectively track short-term strong convection weather.

文摘This study investigates the echoes in axial gravitational perturbations in compact objects.Accordingly,we propose an alternative scheme of the finite difference method implemented in two coordinate systems, where the initial conditions are placed on the axis of the tortoise coordinate with appropriate boundary conditions that fully re-spect the causality. The scheme is then employed to study the temporal profiles of the quasinormal oscillations in the Schwarzschild black hole and uniform-density stars. When presented as a two-dimensional evolution profile, the res-ulting ringdown waveforms in the black hole metric are split into reflected and transmitted waves as the initial per-turbations evolve and collide with the peak of the effective potential.Meanwhile, for compact stars, quasinormal os-cillations might be characterized by echoes.Consistent with the causality arguments, the phenomenon is produced by the gravitational waves bouncing between the divergent potential at the star's center and the peak of the effective po-tential.The implications of the present study are also discussed herein.

文摘Using China New Generation Weather Radar (CINRAD) level-Ⅱ data, the original algorithms for removing isol-ated non-meteorological echoes and ground clutters in radar data, which have been applied to Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) in the USA and Severe Weather Automatic Nowcast (SWAN) system in China, are modified and improved. Based on the statistics of 232 volume scans of radar data (on a temporal resolution of 1 h) measured at Nanchang station from 0000 UTC 5 to 1600 UTC 14 March 2015, it is found that the improved algorithms not only eliminate most (over 95% under clear-sky conditions) of the isolated non-meteorological echoes and ground clutters (including those appearing at two adjacent elevation angles), but also well preserve the structure of meteorological echoes (storms).

文摘This study investigates classification and diurnal variations of the precipitation echoes over the central Tibetan Plateau based on the observations collected from a C-band vertically-pointing frequency-modulated continuous-wave(C-FMCW)radar during the Third Tibetan Plateau Atmospheric Scientific Experiment(TIPEX-Ⅲ)2014-Intensive Observation Period(2014-IOP).The results show that 51.32%of the vertical profiles have valid echoes with reflectivity>–10 dBZ,and 35.06% of the valid echo profiles produce precipitation at the ground(precipitation profiles);stratiform precipitation with an evident bright-band signature, weak convective precipitation, and strong convective precipitation account for 52.03%,42.98%,and 4.99% of the precipitation profiles, respectively.About 59.84% of the precipitation occurs in the afternoon to midnight, while 40.16% of the precipitation with weaker intensity is observed in the nocturnal hours and in the morning.Diurnal variation of occurrence frequency of precipitation shows a major peak during 2100–2200 LST(local solar time)with 59.02%being the stratiform precipitation;the secondary peak appears during 1300–1400 LST with 59.71% being the weak convective precipitation;the strong convective precipitation occurs mostly(81.83%)in the afternoon and evening with two peaks over 1200–1300 and 1700–1800 LST,respectively.Starting from approximately 1100 LST,precipitation echoes develop with enhanced vertical air motion, elevated echo top,and increasing radar reflectivity.Intense upward air motion occurs most frequently in 1700–1800 LST with a secondary peak in 1100–1400 LST,while the tops of precipitation echoes and intense upward air motion reach their highest levels during 1600–1800 LST.The atmospheric conditions in the early morning are disadvantageous for convective initiation and development.Around noon, the convective available potential energy(CAPE)increases markedly, convective inhibition(CIN)is generally small, and a super-dry-adiabatic layer is present near the surface(0–400 m).In the early evening, some larger values of CAPE,level of neutral buoyancy, and total precipitable water are present, suggesting more favorable thermodynamic and water vapor conditions.
