Computing Science in Transdisciplinary Education

Transdisciplinary collaboration has achieved remarkable results in many fields,and many global challenges also require transdisciplinary collaboration.Therefore,transdisciplinary education and research is one of the inevitable trends in the future development of universities.In this context,HKUST has made innovative changes in transdisciplinary education and research.First,we set three missions for the development of HKUST in transdisciplinary education and research.Second,we established the HKUST Guangzhou Campus to carry out a new revolution in transdisciplinary education and research.In addition,Big Data,AI,and computer science play a vital role in transdisciplinary research and collaboration,and we also need to rethink the role of computer science and how to better refer to supporting interdisciplinary collaboration.

Analysis of the Higher Education Research in the Chengdu-Chongqing Region:A Comparative Perspective Based on Three Major Economic Circles in China

Drawing on literature regarding higher education research retrieved from the CNKI database from 1997 to 2021,this paper used CiteSpace to analyze the current status of higher education research in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.By comparing it with that in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region,the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,and the Yangtze River Delta,this paper concluded that the level of higher education research within a region is in line with the level of the region’s economic and social development.As higher education research in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle draws more and more attention,its research areas and topics are becoming increasingly diversified.However,by comparison,the research in this region features a late start and lower participation of researchers and research institutions,resulting in insufficient research in both quantity and quality.Therefore,it is essential to encourage more experts and scholars to participate in higher education research in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.Efforts should also be made to strengthen academic exchanges and cooperation between scholars in Chengdu and Chongqing and establish a long-term cooperation mechanism for higher education research between the two cities.Improved higher education research will definitely facilitate the construction of first-class universities,thus providing human capital and intellectual support for the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.

Ethical Criteria in Research in Music Education in Brazil

The growth of research in Music Education in Brazil,together with the advancement of ethical care in research,originated this research that aimed to investigate aspects related to ethical care in research in Music Education in Brazil,based on Resolution No.510/2016,which deals with ethics in research with human beings.Data were collected via Internet,in the journal of the Brazilian Association of Music Education(known by the acronym ABEM),with a time frame from 2016 to 2022.As a result,five papers were found.It is understood,in this sense,that there is room for the growth of investigations in Music Education that deal with research ethics.Despite the advances in legislation regarding research ethics,as well as the need for investigations in Music Education to also consider these issues in their data collection and analysis,the theme has still been little considered in methodological procedures.

Innovation and Practice of Internal Quality Assurance System in Higher Education Institutions -- Taking Jingzhou Vocational and Technical College as an Example

Continuously improving the internal quality assurance system and promoting the innovative development of higher vocational education is a challenge that every higher vocational institution must solve on the road of diagnosis and improvement.To address the current dilemma of building internal quality assurance systems in higher education institutions,this study utilizes a case study approach.This study takes Jingzhou Vocational and Technical College as the research object for research.Conclusion:The excellent diagnosis and reform model and the effectiveness of diagnosis and reform in this school can provide new strategic ideas for the practice of diagnosis and reform for the high-quality development of higher education in Hubei.

Overview of the Third Global Forum

Computer science continues to grow at a rapid pace,raising the issue of how universities can best adapt to this trend.At the third Global Forum on the Development of Computer Science(GFDCS),five heads of departments of computer science from Asia,Europe,and North America came together to exchange ideas under the theme Challenges and Opportunities of Computer Science in the New Era.Through the discussions,a number of new challenges were explored,including how to meet the growing demand for computer science education,how to manage increased teaching loads,how to foster collaboration between computer science and other disciplines,how to raise ethical awareness,and how to support new“transdisciplinary”modes of education and research.At the same time,there was a consensus on the need to strengthen the role of computer science in other departments,the importance of industrial collaboration,and the need for more scalable approaches to teaching.The evolving role of computer science within the context of broader science was also discussed.

The Guangdong Mode of Integration of Science-Education and Industry-Education for Postgraduates in Engineering

Based on the theory of collaborative innovation and the triple helix theory combined with the needs for innovative development in the modern manufacturing industry in Guangdong Province,the construction of open bases as education carriers by the governments was explored in terms of implement joint training for postgraduates in engineering through the integration of science-education and industry-education,to improve the practical innovation ability of postgraduates in engineering.The integration training mode has significantly improved the effectiveness of collaborative education and innovation,and it has become an important talent and intellectual support for Guangdong’s modern manufacturing industry.It has further advanced the theory and practice of joint training conducted by governments,industries,universities,and scientific research institutes.

Northwest University of Political Science and Law Human Rights Research and Education Center

I. Human Rights Education and Training 1. Overview The Northwest University of Political Science and Law is a diversified university, highlighting law as well as covering philosophy, economics, literature, management, art and engineering. It is an important base for training legal professionals as well as a center for legal education, research and information in Northwest China. The university, which was established 77 years ago and has trained undergraduate students for 56 years and graduate students for 35 years, is financially supported by the Shaanxi provincial govemment.

Jilin University Center for Human Rights Research and Education

I. Overview The Center for Human Rights Research and Education at Jilin University, is based on the Human Rights Institute of the Theoretical Law Research Center at Jilin University. It brings together teachers and researchers who specialize in constitutional law, ad- ministrative law, criminal law, civil and commercial law, procedural law, labor and social security law, environmental law and international law. With a geo- graphical focus on the three northeastern provinces, the center invites human rights experts to construct a teaching and research platform that combines theoretical research, personnel training, social service and cultural exchange.

An Integer Programming Model for the KenKen Problem

In this paper we consider modeling techniques for the mathematical puzzle KenKen. It is an interesting puzzle from modeling point of view since it has different kind of mathematical restrictions that are not trivial to express as linear constraints. We give an integer program for solving KenKen and and its implementation on modeling language AMPL. Our integer program uses an innovative way for converting product restrictions into linear constraints. It can be also used for teaching various integer programming techniques in an Operations Research course.

Baicalin suppresses iron accumulation after substantia nigra injury: relationship between iron concentration and transferrin expression

Previous studies have shown that baicalin prevented iron accumulation after substantia nigra injury, reduced divalent metal transporter 1 expression, and increased ferroportin 1 expression in the substantia nigra of rotenone-induced Parkinson＇s disease rats. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between iron accumulation and transferrin expression in C6 cells, to explore the mechanisms of the inhibitory effect of baicalin on iron accumulation observed in Parkinson＇s disease rats. Iron content was detected using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy. Results showed that iron content decreased 41% after blocking divalent metal transporter 1 and ferroportin 1 proteins. After treatment with ferric ammonium citrate of differing concentrations （10, 50, 100, 400 ktg/mL） in C6 glioma cells, cell survival rate and ferroportin 1 expression were negatively correlated with ferric ammonium citrate concentration, but divalent metal transporter 1 expression positively correlated with ferric ammonium citrate concentration. Baicalin or deferoxamine reduced divalent metal transporter 1 expression, but increased ferroportin 1 expression in the 100 μg/mL ferric ammonium citrate-loaded C6 cells. These results indicate that baicalin down-regulated iron concentration, which positively regulat- ed divalent metal transporter 1 expression and negatively regulated ferroportin 1 expression, and decreased iron accumulation in the substantia nigra.

Students' perceptions of teaching factors that demotivate their learning in lectures and laboratory-based skills practice

Objectives: The objective of this paper is to report students' perceptions of factors that demotivated their learning in lectures and laboratory-based skills practice settings.Methods: A total of 23 students were recruited from the Bachelor of Nursing courses at three Japanese universities,using purposive sampling.A semi-structured interview was conducted with each participant between November 2017 and January 2018 to elicit their perceptions about which aspects of the teaching context demotivated their engagement in learning.The results were analyzed using thematic analysis.Results: Three themes were generated: a restrictive environment,discouraging attitudes and discouraging teaching approaches.Conclusions: To prevent students from experiencing demotivation,teachers in the nursing faculty need to manage learning resources more effectively,create a quiet and focused atmosphere to allow students to concentrate,and be enthusiastic about teaching.They also need to add value to their classes,help students to follow lectures,and ensure that the workload they give their students is appropriate.

Global Educational Research in Western Times:The Rise and Plight of Chinese Educational Research

The paper offers a critical appraisal of the global knowledge developments in education using China’s contributions in a fashion similar to a case study.The paper scrutinizes the complicity of Western educational research to euro-centric biases and discusses the pursuit of a global epistemological eclecticism.To support this claim,the magnitude of the global knowledge economy,including country-by-country comparisons,is explored together with data pertaining to the success rate of submissions and citations.These data are used as the basis for arguments that the dominant research practices and developmental work serve Western interests,Western thought and a Western economy tied to standardization rather than eastern epistemological interests.

Innovation leading development:a glimpse into three-dimensional bioprinting in Israel

Three-dimensional(3D)printing has attracted increasing research interest as an emerging manufacturing technology for devel-oping sophisticated and exquisite architecture through hierarchical printing.It has also been employed in various advanced industrial areas.The development of intelligent biomedical engineering has raised the requirements for 3D printing,such as flexible manufacturing processes and technologies,biocompatible constituents,and alternative bioproducts.However,state-of-the-art 3D printing mainly involves inorganics or polymers and generally focuses on traditional industrial fields,thus severely limiting applications demanding biocompatibility and biodegradability.In this regard,peptide architectonics,which are self-assembled by programmed amino acid sequences that can be flexibly functionalized,have shown promising potential as bioinspired inks for 3D printing.Therefore,the combination of 3D printing and peptide self-assembly poten-tially opens up an alternative avenue of 3D bioprinting for diverse advanced applications.Israel,a small but innovative nation,has significantly contributed to 3D bioprinting in terms of scientific studies,marketization,and peptide architectonics,including modulations and applications,and ranks as a leading area in the 3D bioprinting field.This review summarizes the recent progress in 3D bioprinting in Israel,focusing on scientific studies on printable components,soft devices,and tissue engineering.This paper further delves into the manufacture of industrial products,such as artificial meats and bioinspired supramolecular architectures,and the mechanisms,physicochemical properties,and applications of peptide self-assembly.Undoubtedly,Israel contributes significantly to the field of 3D bioprinting and should thus be appropriately recognized.

Review of Quantitative Methods Used in Chinese Educational Research,1978-2018

Purpose:This article reviews the development of quantitative methods in educational research in China since 1978.Design/Approach/Methods:For this summary and literature review,we used data from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),relevant books,and research output from the Graduate School of Education,Peking University.Findings:We divided the development of quantitative methods in Chinese educational research into four stages:the Startup Stage(1978–1988),the Gradual Application Stage(1989–1998),the Growth Spurt Stage(1999–2008),and the Integrated and Diverse Development Stage(2009–2018).Overall,the development of quantitative methods in Chinese educational research shows sustained innovation in numerous aspects,including research methods,data sources,utilization of advancements in computing technology and statistical software,and research topics.However,despite the relatively advanced state of quantitative methods,education measurement and evaluation require further attention.The questionnaire and experimental research data currently available indicate the need to improve the mining and utilization of big data.Moreover,while Chinese educational researchers have demonstrated their proficiency in using quantitative research methods,improvements remain to be made with respect to collaboration and sharing.Originality/Value:This article is the first to analyze systemically the development of quantitative methods in Chinese educational research.It provides an original summary of the development and characteristics of quantitative methods in educational research in China.

Learning to Design Research: Students’ Agency and Experiences in a Master of Education Program in Hong Kong

Purpose:Learning to do research has been understudied in the context of professional development in postgraduate programs.This exploratory study investigated the agency and experiences of five Chinese students who learned to design their research project in a Master of Education program at an English-medium university in Hong Kong SAR.Design/Approach/Methods:We obtained the data from semi-structured interviews and documents to establish data triangulation.Findings:The findings revealed that(1)the students’agency in research design and proposal writing was associated with their personal/professional backgrounds,(2)their English proficiency affected their agency in the proposal writing,(3)the supervisors’feedback would stimulate students’agency in changing/refining their research design,and(4)ineffective supervision and learning resources would impede students’achievement of agency on their way to creating a robust research design.Originality/Value:This study adds empirical evidence to the field of research training through the lens of learner agency.It demonstrates the applicability of using the ecological framework of agency in theoretically interpreting the contextual facilitators and constraints in making postgraduate students active agents.

ACTION RESEARCH IN TEACHER EDUCATION

IntroductionHistorically there has been a division between the classroom teacher who‘does practice’and theeducational researcher who‘establishes theories’.Similarly in teacher education programmes,thefocus has largely been on the transmission of research-based theories and skills from trainer totrainee.Teaching practice is usually listed as a separate component to be accomplished,often at theend of a period of training,and the limited time available for it can rarely provide realisticopportunities for trainees to put theory into practice.When our trainees return to their institutions theexcitement of the exposure to various theories and techniques are soon gone,to be replaced by thereality of classroom life.Many former trainees rapidly find themselves overburdened with teachingresponsibilities,and the constraints of their particular teaching situations can make it very difficult toapply theories they have learned during training directly into practice.

Chinese Educational Policy Research:The Arduous Formation of a Research Paradigm

Purpose:Through combing the 40 years’history of the development of Chinese educational policy research,this article attempts to sort out the efforts and lessons learned by researchers in the field of education policy in China.Design/Approach/Methods:As one of the earliest scholars engaged in the study of Chinese education policy,based on the academic publications,symposia,and thematic research,the author has found efforts in four directions in the field:proposals for policy-oriented research and research-oriented policy,disciplinization-based endeavors,empirical research on theory-guided educational policy,and guidance on major educational policy research topics and a think tank for educational policy decisions.Findings:This article argues that there is now a correspondence among the ideas,themes,forms,and frameworks of the educational reform promulgated by the government in recent years that have appeared in educational policy research,but there is no clear demarcation of what makes an educational policy researcher;no stable academic community has been formed that might strive together toward the foundation of a disciplinary paradigm,the rational organization of academic ideas,and the establishment and handing over of a theoretical framework to a succeeding generation.Originality/Value:This article takes a step back to claim that a paradigm for Chinese educational policy research is still nascent in the arduous process of formulation.
