Prof. Zhou Peiyuan, A Shining Star in China's Scientific and Educational Community

Prof. Zhou Peiyuan (P.Y.Chou) was a celebrated scientist, educationalist and social activist well-known both at home and abroad. He was an outstanding leader in the Chinese science and technology community, a founder of modern mechanics in China, a fighter dedicated to world peace and an international envoy of peace and goodwill sent by the Chinese people as well as a peopleto-people diplomat for the promotion ofinternational exchange and cooperation in science and technology.

Predictors for attending annual eye screening for diabetic retinopathy amongst patients with diabetes in an urban community of Beijing

AIM： To gain a better understanding of possible factors that may influence the decision of diabetes persons to participate in annual eye screening in an urban community setting of China.METHODS： A structured interview including questions on attendance of eye screening, knowledge and awareness of diabetic retinopathy was conducted. The presence and degree of retinopathy were assessed using two field nonmydriatic retinal photography. RESULTS： Totally 720 diabetes persons were recruited and 519 were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. In this urban setting of Beijing, among diabetes patients of average of 10 y duration, 77% confirmed having undergone at least one eye examination and 61% reported having at least one eye examination with dilated pupil. As for the last 12 mo, the number decreased to 210（47%） and 131（30%） separately. Most of the participants（95%） were aware that diabetes could affect their vision and that regular eye examination was necessary. Very few of them（12%） however were aware that the early stages of diabetic retinopathy presented without symptoms of vision loss. Having attended patient education on diabetes was effective in building awareness about diabetic eye disease and was a significant positive predictor for attending eye screening [education in a year, Adj. OR=0.47（0.29-0.74）, P〈0.001, education years ago, Adj. OR=0.56（0.33-0.96）, P=0.036]. The duration of disease also increasedthe likelihood of having undergone eye screening（Adj. OR=0.96, P〈0.05）. CONCLUSION： Being exposed to education about the complications of diabetes increases the probability of attending diabetic eye screening. An appropriate patient knowledge building strategy should be made available to patients from the time of diagnosis.

Community education study tour instructors are important action elements of community education tours.It is necessary to sort out the abilities of community education study tour instructors as well as construct a scientific and reasonable professional ability index system for community education study tour instructors,so as to promote the high-quality development of community education as well as the modernization of lifelong education governance system and governance ability.Based on the practice of community education in Jiangsu and the basic theory of pedagogy,this paper puts forward five core vocational abilities of community education,including travel education and teaching ability,curriculum development ability,management and research ability,training and guidance ability,as well as study tour guarantee ability.This paper attempts to sort out the ability of community education study tour instructors through research and analysis.A three-dimensional and multi-dimensional framework of community education instructors’ability has been constructed to provide a path for the professional development of community education study tour instructors.

Human Capital of Family and Social Mobility in Rural Areas-Evidence from China

This research focuses on the impact of family＇s human capital on social mobility in China＇s rural community.Empirical research is conducted based on data from surveying a typical rural community in the past 20 yr.The study indicates that social mobility in rural area is active in the past 20 yr,and the human capital of family,represented by primary labor＇s education level,has played an essential role in mobility of low social class.Meanwhile,socio-economic development and the change of supply and demand in labor market dims the signaling role of degree education,but the impact of occupational training is increasingly remarkable.Therefore,the change from sole degree education to multi-leveled education including occupational education and training is a main way for China＇s rural families in low class to realize social mobility.

About the University's Role in the Advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative

Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed to develop the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-centruy Maritime Silk Roadsuccessively in September and October of 2013.As we know,the institutions of higher learning have four major functions,namely,the talent cultivation,scientific research,social service and cultural heritance.These four functions actually play a crucial role inadvancing the Belt and Road Initiative.Under this background,a clear understanding about the university’s role and the feasibleapproaches in developing our country’s Belt and Road Initiative will fully assist to enhance the exchanges and cooperation amonguniversities of countries and regions along the Belt and Road routes,and make concerted efforts to realize the resource sharing,joint cultivation of talents,academic coexistence and cultural resonance,so that we could jointly build a community of higher edu-cation for the Belt and Road.

Joy of gardening: a hospital-based cooking and gardening program

Background Nutrition interventions aid in implementing healthy eating.Garden-enhanced nutrition intervention programs have been conducted in schools.We sought to assess feasibility of a hospital-based cooking and gardening program.Methods The cohort study implemented a 3-week integrated cooking and gardening program in the United States(Seattle,WA).We recruited participants with ages 8-15 years from ambulatory clinics.We conducted three 3-week series hospitalbased cooking and gardening program.Children and parents were given pre-and post-program(1 year)surveys.The surveys assessed child participation in food preparation and gardening,strengths and weaknesses of the program,and identified parents'opinions towards sustaining healthy behaviors.Results Eighteen children participated in the hospital-based cooking and gardening program.At l-year follow-up,78%of participants were gardening at home and 100%of participants were cooking at home.Conclusions Novel approaches to combat obesity are needed.A hospital-based cooking and gardening program is a novel intervention to consider for nutrition education.
