The reason of the existence of the effective stress is that soil particles and water are composited by incompressible solid and liquid. Although air is very compressible fluid, the principle of effective stress is also used in unsaturated soils in the resent developed numerical analyses. Schrefler's equation is most frequently used, but the effective stress is not verified by the experimental results. In this study, the equations for unsaturated soils proposed by Schrefler, Aitchison, Khalili and Khabbaz and Kohgo are compared with using the results of suction controlled consolidometer tests. As a result, the effective stress for unsaturated soils calculated by Schrefler's equation was average of them.展开更多

The training method of cooling with load can induce a lot of martensite prone to stabilize, thus cause large residual deformation, wide hysteresis and small TWME. Training with constant load can produce STWME larger than 8% with the least residual deformation. By training procedure of martensite reorientation below M f followed by thermal cycling, the TWME is relatively large with very small residual deformation and with comparatively narrow hysteresis of two way memory. The obtained two way memory curve after such training is not a closed loop, and the obtained TWME is not stable. However, these can be improved by thermal cycling. Training with martensite reorientation below M f and thermal cycling under relatively low constant stress throughout the whole training procedure is the optimum way of obtaining TWME, and more than 1.7% TWME can be obtained. The thermomechanical history of the sample has a pronounced effect on the training result. Thermomechanical cycling has a softening effect on martensite. [展开更多

Two-stage yielding was observed in the temperature range between Ms and the ultimate temperature to induce martensite, denoted by Md. The first stage was confirmed to be associated with stress-induced martensite(SIM) and the second stage was associated with the yielding of SIM. When the samples were mechanically cycled between Ms and Md, a stress-softening phenomenon was observed. The cyclings made the martensite amount increase, critical stress σc of SIM decrease according to exponential law, and the entropy(also enthalpy) of the parent to martensite transformation also decrease. The variations of SIM relative amount were determined by recording the changes of electrical resistances in the course of tension.展开更多
