The samples were irradiated with 20keV Al ion with the influx from 1×1015 to 1×1016 Al/cm2. Then the as-irradiated samples were measured by ESCA, XRD, AFM/FFM and a nano-probe. It is found that the hardness of as-irradiated samples is 5-6 times as that of the pristine ones. The worn depth of sample implanted at ion influx of 1×1016 Al/cm2 is about one eighth of that of the pristine sample at the same load. The XRD results show that there are some Al2O3 and AlF3 intermingled with the phase of polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE). The experimental results reveal that the tribological properties of EMP can be significantly improved by the ion beam surface modification.展开更多

A wide range of materials with different elastic modulus, yield strength, and strain-hardening exponent were examined.Similar to the Nix-Gao model for the depth dependence of hardness H,the relationship between elastic modulus E and indentation depth h can be expressed as By combiningthese two formulas, we find that there is a relationship between yield stress and indentation depth h:where σyO is the yield strength associated with the strain-hardening exponent n, the true hardness Ho and the true elastic modulus Eo.is constant, whichis only related to n, and hH and hE are characteristic lengths for hardness and elastic modulus. The results obtained from inverse analysis show that the elastic-plastic properties of thin films can be uniquely extracted from the solution of this relationship when the indentation size effect has to be taken into account.展开更多

It exhibited linear and non-linear time-independent elastic deformation with a demarcative stress of approximately 500 MPa within the timescale in the present work, and repeated loading-unloading before yielding did not alter stress-strain relationship. The pure linear elastic strain limit is 0.6%, significantly lower than 2% as generally reported, but still much higher than 0.1% observed for typical crystalline alloys. Deviation from linear elastic behavior at stresses higher than 500 MPa is explained here as a macroscopic manifestation of local fluctuations in elastic strain, which becomes pronounced at stresses higher than the critical value. The occurrence of non-linear elasticity is possibly also related to the sinusoidal relationship between shear stress and atomic displacement.展开更多
