The relation between modulus of elssticity up to 111 GPa and compressive strength up to 360 MPa of mortar mixed silicon carbide was discussed and it was revealed that the contributions of the aggregate hardness and of the interfacial strength between the aggregate and the cement paste on the elasticity of mortar were imporant.展开更多

Test results show that the relative dynamic elastic modulus, the mass variation, and the compressive strength of cement mortar increase first, and then decrease with increasing erosion time in sodium sulfate and sodium chloride solutions. The relative dynamic elastic moduli and the compressive strengths of cement mortars with water/cement ratios of 0.55 and 0.65 in sodium sulfate solution are lower than those in sodium chloride solution with the same concentration at the420 th day of immersion. The compressive strength of cement mortar with water/cement ratio of 0.65 is more sensitive to strain rate than that with water/cement ratio of 0.55. In addition, the strain-rate sensitivity of compressive strength of cement mortar will increase under attacks of sodium sulfate or sodium chloride solution.展开更多

Herein hard rock brittleness is defined using Yagiz'method. A predictive model is developed using a comprehensive database compiled from 30 years' worth of rock tests at the Earth Mechanics Institute(EMI), Colorado School of Mines. The model is sensitive to density, elastic properties, and P- and S-wave velocities. The results show that the model is a better predictor of rock brittleness than conventional destructive strength-test based models and multiple regression techniques. While the findings have direct implications on intact rock, the methodology can be extrapolated to rock mass problems in both tunneling and underground mining where rock brittleness is an important control.展开更多

The UCS is needed in the design of geotechnical engineering problems including stability of rock slopes and design of shallow and deep foundations resting on and/or in rocks. Accordingly, a correct measure-ment/evaluation of the UCS is essential to a safe and economic design. Typically, the UCS is measured using the unconfined compression tests performed on cylindrical intact specimens with a minimum length to width ratio of 2. In several cases, especially for weak and very weak rocks, it is not possible to extract intact specimens with the needed minimum dimensions. Thus, alternative tests (e.g. point load test, Schmidt hammer) are used to measure rock strength. The UCS is computed based on the results of these tests through empirical correlations. The literature includes a plethora of these correlations that vary widely in estimating rock strength. Thus, it is paramount to validate these correlations to check their suitability for estimating rock strength for a specific location and geology. A review of the available correlations used to estimate the UCS from the point load test results is performed and summarized herein. Results of UCS, point load strength index and Young's modulus are gathered for calcareous sandstone specimens extracted from the Dubai area. A correlation for estimating the UCS from the point load strength index is proposed. Furthermore, the Young's modulus is correlated to the UCS.展开更多

The further research has also been done about the crack mechanism through Griffith rupture energy. These results show that the elastic moduli are 195.1 GPa for quenching orthorhombic ~ phase and 201.8 GPa for aging formed Guinier-Preston (G.P) zones, while G/B values are 0.67 and 0.56, respectively. With the phase change of uranium-titanium (U-Ti) alloy via the quenching treatment, the ideal tensile strength is diverse and distinct with dif- ferent crystal orientations of the anisotropic ~ phase. Comparison of quenching and short time aging treatment, both of the strength and toughness trend to improve slightly. Further analysis about electronic density of states (DOS) in the electronic scale indicates that the strength increases continuously while toughness decreases with the aging proceeding. The equilibrium structure appears in overaging process, as a result of decomposition of metastable quenching 7 phase. Thereby the strength and toughness trend to decrease slightly. Finally, the ideal fracture energies of G.P zones and overaging structure are obtained within the framework of Griffith fracture theory, which are 4.67 J/m2 and 3.83 J/m2, respectively. These results theoretically demonstrate strengthening effect of quenching and aging heat treatment on U-Ti alloy.展开更多
