In this work, a series of centrifugal model tests is presented to examine the failure mechanisms of landslide dams. Based on the experimental results, failure process and mechanism of barrier dam due to overtopping are analyzed and further verified by simulating the experimental overtopping failure process. The results indicate that the barrier dam will develop during the entire process of overtopping in the width direction, whereas the breach will cease to develop at an early stage in the depth direction because of the large particles that accumulate on the downstream slope. Moreover, headcut erosion can be clearly observed in the first two stages of overtopping, and coarsening on the downstream slope occurs in the last stage of overtopping. Thus, the bottom part of the barrier dam can survive after dam breaching and full dam failure becomes relatively rare for a barrier dam. Furthermore, the remaining breach would be smaller than that of a homogeneous cohesive dam under the same conditions.展开更多

Then, numerical modelling was established to further study the slope dynamic stability under purely microseisms and the influence of five factors, including seismic amplitude, slope height, slope angle, strata inclination and strata thickness, were considered. The experimental results show that the natural frequency of the slope decreases and damping ratio increases as the earthquake loading times increase. The dynamic strength reduction method is adopted for the stability evaluation of the bedding rock slope in numerical simulation, and the slope stability decreases with the increase of seismic amplitude, increase of slope height, reduction of strata thickness and increase of slope angle. The failure mode of a mid-dip bedding rock slope in the shaking table test is integral slipping along the bedding surface with dipping tensile cracks at the slope rear edge going through the bedding surfaces. In the numerical simulation, the long-term stability of a mid-dip bedding slope is worst under frequent microseisms and the slope is at risk of integral sliding instability, whereas the slope rock mass is more broken than shown in the shaking table test. The research results are of practical significance to better understand the formation mechanism of reservoir landslides and prevent future landslide disasters.展开更多

However, in an actual bridge, the seismic induced substructure failure and superstructure failure may influence each other. Moreover, previous studies typically use simplified models to analyze the bridge failure; however, there are inherent defects in the calculation accuracy compared with using a detailed three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model. Conversely, a detailed 3D FE model requires more computational costs, and a proper erosion criterion of the 3D elements is necessary. In this paper, a multi-scale FE model, including a corresponding erosion criterion, is proposed and validated that can significantly reduce computational costs with high precision by modelling a pseudo-dynamic test of an reinforced concrete (RC) pier. Numerical simulations of the seismic failures of a continuous RC bridge based on the multi-scale FE modeling method using LS-DYNA are performed. The nonlinear properties of the bridge, various connection strengths and bidirectional excitations are considered. The numerical results demonstrate that the failure of the connections will induce large pounding responses of the girders. The nonlinear deformation of the piers will aggravate the pounding damages. Furthermore, bidirectional earthquakes will induce eccentric poundingsto the girders and different failure modes to the adjacent piers.展开更多

The results show that the propagation phenomenon of stress wave in the surrounding rock of tunnel and the failure process of surrounding rock under explosive stress waves are reproduced realistically by using numerical code RFPA2O; from the failure process of surrounding rock, the place at which surrounding rock fractures is transferred because of tunnel reinforcing, and the rockfall and collapse caused by failure of surrounding rock are restrained by tunnel reinforcing; furthermore, the absolute values of peak values of major principal stress, and the minimal principal stress and shear stress at center point of tunnel roof are reduced because of tunnel reinforcing, and the displacement at center point of runnel roof is reduced as well, consequently the stability of tunnel increases.展开更多

In this study, laboratory tests were frstly carried out on standard coal specimens with fve diferent water contents (i.e., 0%, 0.6%, 1.08%, 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.3%). The failure mode, fragment size, and energy distribution characteristics of coal specimens were investigated. Experimental results show that strength, elastic strain energy, dissipated energy, brittleness index, as well as impact energy index decrease with increasing water content. Besides, the failure mode transitions gradually from splitting ejection to tensile-shear mixed failure mode as water content increases, and average fragment size shows positively related to water content. Moreover, scanning electron microscope tests results indicate that water in coal sample mainly causes the mineral softening and defects increase. Furthermore, a numerical model containing roadway excavation was established considering the water on coal burst prevention. Modelling results revealed that water injection can reduce degree of coal burst and ejection velocity of coal blocks, while it will raise up the depth of crack zone and surface displacement of roadway. Combined with laboratory tests and numerical results, the micro mechanism, energy mechanism, and engineering signifcance of water injection on coal burst prevention were fnally analyzed.展开更多

In order to investigate progressive failure behavior in brittle rocks, a modified constitutive model was developed which follows the principles of the continuum damage mechanics method. It incorporates non-linear Hoek-Brown failure criterion, confining pressure-dependent strength degradation and volume dilation laws, and is able to represent the nonlinear degradation and dilation behaviors of brittle rocks in the post-failure region. A series of triaxial compression tests were carried out on Eibenstock(Germany) granite samples. Based on a lab data fitting procedure, a consistent parameter set for the modified constitutive model was deduced and implemented into the numerical code FLAC3 D. The good agreement between numerical and laboratory results indicates that the modified constitutive law is well suited to represent the nonlinear mechanical behavior of brittle rock especially in the post-failure region.展开更多

After such a large-magnitude earthquake, it was crucial to analyze the influences of the earthquake on the surrounding faults and the potential seismic activity. In this paper, a complex viscoelastic model of western Sichuan and eastern Tibet regions was constructed including the topography. Based on the findings of co-seismic static slip distribution, we calculated the stress change caused by the Wenchuan earthquake with the post-seismic relaxation into consideration. Our preliminary results indicated that: (1) The tectonic stressing rate was relatively high in Kunlun mountain pass-Jiangcuo, Ganzi-Yushu, Xianshuihe and Zemuhe faults; while in the east Kunlun and Longriba was medium; also the value was less in the Minjiang, Longmenshan, Anninghe and Huya faults. As to the Longmenshan fault, the value was 0.28×10-3 MPa/a to 0.35×10-3 MPa/a, which is coincident with the previous long recurrence interval of Wenchuan earthquake; (2) The Wenchuan earthquake not only caused the Coulomb stress decrease in the source region, but also the stress increase in the two terminals, especially the northeastern segment, which is comparatively consistent with the aftershock distribution. Meanwhile, the high concentration areas of the static slip distribution were corresponding to the Coulomb stress reductions; (3) The Coulomb stress change caused by Wenchuan earthquake showed significant increase on five major faults, which were northwestern segment of Xianshuihe fault, eastern Kunlun fault, Longriba fault, Minjiang fault and Huya fault respectively; also the Coulomb stress on the fault plane of the Yushu earthquake was faintly increased; (4) We defined the recurrence interval as the time needed to accumulate the magnitude of the stress drop, and the recurrence interval of Wenchuan earthquake was estimated about 1 714 a to 2 143 a correspondingly.展开更多

The simulation is carried out for the moment from the beginning of deformation to the local yield in work piece. In order to treat the work hardening on deformation resistance, a correction of stress based on deformation rate is taken into consideration. The calculation results shows, there are two stress peaks both on the lower and upper sides ahead of the tooth tip during the elastic press stage, in which the displacement of tooth is below 0.735*10-6 cm. Following the push of saw tooth and rise of saw load, metal at the corner of filing reaches the yield point and a local plastic area appears, where metal shapes new filing part towards the free surface under the extrusion forces. Meanwhile the stress peaks ahead of tooth tip initial also yield regions. The displacement of saw tooth is between 0.735*10-6cm and 1.274*10-6cm in this stage. With the further push of the saw tooth, metal bounded to tooth tip is torn under the combination of tensile and sheer stress. The slide of metal and its local plastic flow form the extension of filing. Then the saw load rises no longer and static sawing procedure continues.展开更多

The model behaves linearly elastic until it reaches the ‘Tsai-Wu’ yield surfaces, which are a series of concentric elliptical curves of different sizes. Decreasing temperature results in a large yield surface. Failure criteria, based on the influence of accumulated plastic strain and hydrostatic pressure, are built into the model. Based on published experimental data on the relationship between depth and temperature in icebergs, three typical iceberg temperature profiles are proposed. According to these, ice elements located at different depths have different temperatures. The model is incorporated into LS-DYNA using a user-defined subroutine and applied to a simulation of FPSO collisions with different types of icebergs. Simulated area-pressure curves are compared with design codes to validate the iceberg model. The influence of iceberg shape and temperature on the collision process is analyzed. It is indicated that FPSO structural damage not only depends on the relative strength between the iceberg and the structure, but also depends on the local shape of the iceberg.展开更多

文摘A cascading failure of landslide dams caused by strong earthquakes or torrential rains in mountainous river valleys can pose great threats to people’s lives, properties, and infrastructures. In this study, based on the three-dimensional Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations(RANS),the renormalization group(RNG)k-εturbulence model, suspended and bed load transport equations, and the instability discriminant formula of dam breach side slope, and the explicit finite volume method(FVM),a detailed numerical simulation model for calculating the hydro-morphodynamic characteristics of cascading dam breach process has been developed. The developed numerical model can simulate the breach hydrograph and the dam breach morphology evolution during the cascading failure process of landslide dams.A model test of the breaches of two cascading landslide dams has been used as the validation case. The comparison of the calculated and measured results indicates that the breach hydrograph and the breach morphology evolution process of the upstream and downstream dams are generally consistent with each other, and the relative errors of the key breaching parameters,i.e.,the peak breach flow and the time to peak of each dam,are less than±5%.Further,the comparison of the breach hydrographs of the upstream and downstream dams shows that there is an amplification effect of the breach flood on the cascading landslide dam failures.Three key parameters,i.e.,the distance between the upstream and the downstream dams, the river channel slope, and the downstream dam height, have been used to study the flood amplification effect. The parameter sensitivity analyses show that the peak breach flow at the downstream dam decreases with increasing distance between the upstream and the downstream dams, and the downstream dam height.Further, the peak breach flow at the downstream dam first increases and then decreases with steepening of the river channel slope. When the flood caused by the upstream dam failure flows to the downstream dam,it can produce a surge wave that overtops and erodes the dam crest, resulting in a lowering of the dam crest elevation. This has an impact on the failure occurrence time and the peak breach flow of the downstream dam.The influence of the surge wave on the downstream dam failure process is related to the volume of water that overtops the dam crest and the erosion characteristics of dam material. Moreover, the cascading failure case of the Xiaogangjian and Lower Xiaogangjian landslide dams has also been used as the representative case for validating the model. In comparisons of the calculated and measured breach hydrographs and final breach morphologies, the relative errors of the key dam breaching parameters are all within±10%,which verify the rationality of the model is applicable to real-world cases.Overall, the numerical model developed in this study can provide important technical support for the risk assessment and emergency treatment of failures of cascading landslide dams.

文摘The present study focuses on the breaching process and failure of barrier dams due to overtopping. Furthermore, the remaining breach would be smaller than that of a homogeneous cohesive dam under the same conditions.

文摘In actual production, deep coal mine roadways are often under typical static-dynamic coupling stress(SDCS)conditions with high ground stress and strong dynamic disturbances. With the increasing number of disasters and accidents induced by SDCS conditions, the safe and efficient production of coal mines is seriously threatened. Therefore,it is of great practical significance to study the deformation and failure characteristics of the roadway surrounding rock under SDCS.In this paper, the effects of different in-situ stress fields and dynamic load conditions on the surrounding rock are studied by numerical simulations, and the deformation and failure characteristics are obtained.According to the simulation results, the horizontal stress, vertical stress and dynamic disturbance have a positive correlation with the plastic failure of the surrounding rock.Among these factors, the influence of the dynamic disturbance is the most substantial.Under the same stress conditions, the extents of deformation and plastic failure of the roof and ribs are always greater than those of the floor. The effect of horizontal stresses on the roadway deformation is more notable than that of vertical stresses. The results indicate that for the roadway under high-stress conditions, the in-situ stress test must be strengthened first. After determining the magnitude of the in-situ stress, the location of the roadway should be reasonably arranged in the design to optimize the mining sequence. For roadways that are strongly disturbed by dynamic loads, rock supports(rebar/cable bolts, steel set etc.)that are capable of maintaining their effectiveness without failure after certain dynamic loads are required. The results of this study contribute to understanding the characteristics of the roadway deformation and failure under SDCS,and can be used to provide a basis for the support design and optimization under similar geological and geotechnical circumstances.

文摘Shake table testing was performed to investigate the dynamic stability of a mid-dip bedding rock slope under frequent earthquakes. The research results are of practical significance to better understand the formation mechanism of reservoir landslides and prevent future landslide disasters.

文摘Previous failure analyses of bridges typically focus on substructure failure or superstructure failure separately. Furthermore, bidirectional earthquakes will induce eccentric poundingsto the girders and different failure modes to the adjacent piers.

文摘Based on mesoscopic damage mechanics, numerical code RFPA2D (dynamic edition) was developed to analyze the influence of tunnel reinforcing on failure process of surrounding rock under explosive stress waves. The results show that the propagation phenomenon of stress wave in the surrounding rock of tunnel and the failure process of surrounding rock under explosive stress waves are reproduced realistically by using numerical code RFPA2O; from the failure process of surrounding rock, the place at which surrounding rock fractures is transferred because of tunnel reinforcing, and the rockfall and collapse caused by failure of surrounding rock are restrained by tunnel reinforcing; furthermore, the absolute values of peak values of major principal stress, and the minimal principal stress and shear stress at center point of tunnel roof are reduced because of tunnel reinforcing, and the displacement at center point of runnel roof is reduced as well, consequently the stability of tunnel increases.

文摘Water injection, as a widely used technique to prevent coal burst, can restrain the fractured coal seam and released the energy storage. Combined with laboratory tests and numerical results, the micro mechanism, energy mechanism, and engineering signifcance of water injection on coal burst prevention were fnally analyzed.

文摘The understanding of the rock deformation and failure process and the development of appropriate constitutive models are the basis for solving problems in rock engineering. The good agreement between numerical and laboratory results indicates that the modified constitutive law is well suited to represent the nonlinear mechanical behavior of brittle rock especially in the post-failure region.

文摘Zhangmu Town in Tibet of China, which lies in the southern piedmont of the median Himalayas,is a small but strategically important port of trade exchange between China and Nepal. Many rockfall events have occurred in Zhangmu since 1970,resulting in huge economic losses and serious influence on the bilateral trade. We conducted a detailed field investigation on the high and steep slope in Zhangmu Town, and analyzed the distribution features, stability, failure modes and evolution of dangerous rocks of potential rockfalls. Then we numerically simulated the movement path, velocity and accumulation forms of the rockfall with PFC^(3D) program. The results indicated that the dangerous rock belt could be divided into three sections, namely, unstable section, slightly stable section and basically stable section. It was estimated that the rock debris and single dangerous rock would be unstable in the case of earthquakes or rainstorms.Due to the terrain constraints, the fallen rocks would scatter near the mouth of the Zhangmu ditch and in the Buqu River through multiple times of rolling,collision-induced diversion and bouncing.Without reinforcement, the rockfall could cause serious damage to the car parks, gas stations and National Highway 318 along the line from Zhangmu Town to Zhangmu ditch.Based on the field survey and numerical simulation,we recommended rockfall removal and interception as the major prevention measures, and protective sheds as auxiliary measure.

文摘On 12 May 2008, the devastating Wenchuan earthquake struck the Longmenshan fault zone, which comprised the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, and this fault zone was predominantly a convergent boundary with a right-lateral strike-slip component. Meanwhile, the high concentration areas of the static slip distribution were corresponding to the Coulomb stress reductions; (3) The Coulomb stress change caused by Wenchuan earthquake showed significant increase on five major faults, which were northwestern segment of Xianshuihe fault, eastern Kunlun fault, Longriba fault, Minjiang fault and Huya fault respectively; also the Coulomb stress on the fault plane of the Yushu earthquake was faintly increased; (4) We defined the recurrence interval as the time needed to accumulate the magnitude of the stress drop, and the recurrence interval of Wenchuan earthquake was estimated about 1 714 a to 2 143 a correspondingly.
文摘The present paper gives a numerical simulation of hot sawing process by using elastic- plastic finite element method. Then the saw load rises no longer and static sawing procedure continues.

文摘To simulate the FPSO-iceberg collision process more accurately, an elastic-plastic iceberg material model considering temperature gradient effects is proposed and applied. It is indicated that FPSO structural damage not only depends on the relative strength between the iceberg and the structure, but also depends on the local shape of the iceberg.
文摘In developing the new friction welding technology, the thermal elastic-plastic stress analysis by the finite element method was carried out to seek the suitable welding conditions such as the friction pressure, the friction speed and the upset pressure. The results obtained are as follows: Heat transfer to the specimens and the intermediate material during friction process was made clear; The operational conditions such as the rotation number of the intermediate material and the friction pressure to reach the liquidus in the interface could be estimated; Further, as the overhang length near the interface is well related to the joint efficiency, we tried to obtain the operational conditions by numerical analysis to acquire a certain length of the overhang length near the interface.
文摘The latticed dunes in the Tengger Desert are widely distributed, and the sand-blocking fence placed here are highly susceptible to local failure due to complex wind-sand activities, posing a serious threat to the safe operation of the highway. To explore the local failure mechanism of sand-blocking fence in the latticed dune area, the local failure of sand-blocking fence in the latticed dune areas along the Wuhai-Maqin Highway in China was observed.Taking the first main ridge of the latticed dune as the placement location, the structure of the wind-sand flow field of sand-blocking fence placed at top,the bottom and the middle of windward slope was analyzed by Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD).The results show that when placed at top of the first main ridge, the wind speed near the sand-blocking fence is the highest,up to 15.23 m/s.Therefore,the wind load strength on the sand barrier is correspondingly larger,up to 232.61 N∙m-2.As the strength of material continues to decrease, the nylon net is prone to breakage. The roots of the angle steel posts are susceptible to hollowing by vortex action, which can cause sand-blocking fence to fall over in strong wind conditions. When placed at the bottom of windward slope, wind speed drop near sand-blocking fence is greatest, with the decrease of 12.48-14.32 m/s compared to the original wind speed. This is highly likely to lead to large-scale deposition of sand particles and burial of the sand-blocking fence. When placed in the middle of windward slope,sand-blocking fence is subjected to less wind load strength(168.61N∙m-2)and sand particles are mostly deposited at the bottom of windward slope, with only a small amount of sand accumulating at the root of sand-blocking fence.Based on field observations and numerical modelling results, when the sand-blocking fence is placed in latticed dune area,it should be placed in the middle of the windward slope of the first main ridge as a matter of priority.Besides the sand-blocking fence should be placed at the top of the first main ridge, and sand fixing measures should be added.

文摘Directional roof cutting(DRC)is one of the key techniques in non-pillar coal mining with self-formed entries(NCMSE)mining method.Due to the inability to accurately measure the expansion coefficient of the goaf rock mass, the implementation of this technology often encounters design challenges, leading to suboptimal results and increased costs. This paper establishes a structural analysis model of the goaf working face roof, revealing the failure mechanism of DRC,and clarifies the positive role of DRC in improving the stress of the roadway surrounding rock and reducing the subsidence of the roof through numerical simulation experiments. On this basis, the paper further analyses the roadway pressure and roof settlement under different DRC design heights, and ultimately proposes an optimized design method for the DRC height. The results indicate that the implementation of DRC can significantly optimize the stress environment of the working face roadway surrounding rock.At the same time, during the application of DRC,three scenarios may arise:insufficient, reasonable, and excessive DRC height.Insufficient height will significantly reduce the effectiveness of the technology, while excessive height has little impact on the implementation effect but will greatly increase construction costs and difficulty.Engineering verification shows that the optimized DRC design method proposed in this paper reduces the peak stress of the protective coal pillar in the roadway by 27.2%and the central subsidence of the roof by 41.8%,demonstrating excellent application results. This method provides technical support for the further promotion of NCMSE mining method.

文摘Deep shale reservoirs are characterized by elevated breakdown pressures, diminished fracture complexity, and reduced modified volumes compared to medium and shallow reservoirs. Therefore,it is urgent to investigate particular injection strategies that can optimize breakdown pressure and fracturing efficiency to address the increasing demands for deep shale reservoir stimulation. In this study, the efficiency of various stimulation strategies, including multi-cluster simultaneous fracturing, modified alternating fracturing, alternating shut-in fracturing, and cyclic alternating fracturing, was evaluated.Subsequently, the sensitivity of factors such as the cycle index,shut-in time, cluster spacing, and horizontal permeability was investigated.Additionally, the flow distribution effect within the wellbore was discussed. The results indicate that relative to multi-cluster simultaneous fracturing, modified alternating fracturing exhibits reduced susceptibility to the stress shadow effect, which results in earlier breakdown, extended hydraulic fracture lengths, and more consistent propagation despite an increase in breakdown pressure. The alternating shut-in fracturing benefits the increase of fracture length, which is closely related to the shut-in time.Furthermore, cyclic alternating fracturing markedly lowers breakdown pressure and contributes to uniform fracture propagation,in which the cycle count plays an important role.Modified alternating fracturing demonstrates insensitivity to variations in cluster spacing, whereas horizontal permeability is a critical factor affecting fracture length. The wellbore effect restrains the accumulation of pressure and flow near the perforation, delaying the initiation of hydraulic fractures. The simulation results can provide valuable numerical insights for optimizing injection strategies for deep shale hydraulic fracturing.
