Accurate prediction of rockburst proneness is one of challenges for assessing the rockburst risk and selecting effective control measures. This study aims to assess rockburst proneness by considering the energy characteristics and qualitative information during rock failure.Several representative rock types in cylindrical and cuboidal sample shapes were tested under uniaxial compression conditions and the failure progress was detected by a high-speed camera. The far-field ejection mass ratio(FEMR)was determined considering the qualitative failure information of the rock samples. The peak-strength energy impact index and the residual elastic energy index were used to quantitatively evaluate the rockburst proneness of both cylindrical and cuboidal samples.Further, the performance of these two indices was analyzed by comparing their estimates with the FEMR.The results show that the accuracy of the residual elastic energy index is significantly higher than that of the peak-strength energy impact index. The residual elastic energy index and the FEMR are in good agreement for both cylindrical and cuboidal rock materials. This is because these two indices can essentially reflect the common energy release mechanism characterized by the mass, ejection velocity, and ejection distance of rock fragments. It suggests that both the FEMR and the residual elastic energy index can be used to accurately measure the rockburst proneness of cylindrical and cuboidal samples based on uniaxial compression test. 展开更多

Afterburning behind the detonation front of an aluminized explosive releases energy on the millisecond timescale, which prolong the release of detonation energy and the energy release at different stages also shows significant differences. However,at present, there are few effective methods for evaluating the energy release characteristics of the middle reaction stage of such explosives, which can have a duration of tens to hundreds of microseconds. The present work demonstrates an approach to assessing the midstage of an aluminized explosive detonation based on a water push test employing a high degree of confinement. In this method, the explosive is contained in a steel cylinder having one end closed that is installed at the bottom of a transparent water tank.Upon detonation, the gaseous products expand in one direction while forcing water ahead of them. The resulting underwater shock wave and the interface between the gas phase products and the water are tracked using an ultra-high-speed framing and streak camera. The shock wave velocity in water and the expansion work performed by the gaseous detonation products were calculated to assess the energy release characteristics of aluminized explosives such as CL-20 and RDX in the middle stage of the detonation reaction.During the middle stage of the detonation process of these aluminized explosives, the aluminum reaction reduced the attenuation of shock waves and increased the work performed by gas phase products.A higher aluminum content increased the energy output while the presence of oxidants slowed the energy release rate. This work demonstrates an effective means of evaluating the performance of aluminized explosives. 展开更多

Energetic structural materials(ESMs)are a new type of structural materials with bearing and damage characteristics. In this work the microstructure, mechanical properties and energy release characteristics of multi-element Ti-Zr-Ta alloys with good casting performance were studied. The microstructure of the Ti_(x)ZrTa alloys gradually change from BCC+HCP to single BCC structure with the increase of Ti.While the Ti_(2)Zr_(y)Ta alloys was still uniform and single BCC structure with the increase of Zr.The evolution of microstructure and composition then greatly affect the mechanical properties and energy-release characteristics of Ti-Zr-Ta alloys. The synergistic effect of dual phase structure increases the fracture strain of Ti_(x)ZrTa(x=0.2,0.5)with the Ti content decreases, while the fracture strain of Ti_(x)ZrTa(x=2.0,3.0,4.0)gradually increase with the Ti content increases caused by the annihilation of the obstacles for dislocation movement. And as Zr content increases, the fracture strain of Ti_(2)Zr_(y)Ta alloys decrease, then the oxidation reaction rate and fragmentation degree gradually increase. The higher oxidation rate and the lager exposed oxidation area jointly leads the higher releasing energy efficiency of Ti_(x)ZrTa alloys with low Ti content and Ti_(2)Zr_(y)Ta alloys with high Zr content. 展开更多

Titanium hydride(TiH_(2)), a promising high-energy additive, is doped into PTFE/Al to optimize the energy output structure of the reactive jet and strive for better aftereffect damage ability to the target. Six types of PTFE/Al/TiH_(2) reactive liners with different TiH_(2) content are prepared by the molding and sintering method. The energy release characteristics of PTFE/Al/TiH_(2) reactive jet are tested by the transient explosion energy test, and are characterized from pressure and temperature. The reaction delay time, pressure history, and temperature history of the energy release process are obtained, then the actual value of released energy and reaction efficiency of the reactive jet are calculated. The results show that the peak pressure and temperature of the PTFE/Al/TiH_(2) jet initially increase and then decrease with increasing TiH_(2) content. When the TiH_(2) content is 10%, the actual value of released energy and reaction efficiency increased by 24% and 6.4%, respectively, compared to the PTFE/Al jet. The reaction duration of the reactive material is significantly prolonged as the TiH_(2) content increased from 0% to 30%. Finally, combined with the energy release behaviors of PAT material and the dynamic deformation process of liner, the enhancement mechanism of TiH_(2) on energy release of the reactive jet is expounded. 展开更多

Micron-scale crack propagation in red-bed soft rocks under hydraulic action is a common cause of engineering disasters due to damage to the hard rockesoft rockewater interface.Previous studies have not provided a theoretical analysis of the length, inclination angle, and propagation angle of micron-scale cracks, nor have they established appropriate criteria to describe the crack propagation process. The propagation mechanism of micron-scale cracks in red-bed soft rocks under hydraulic action is not yet fully understood, which makes it challenging to prevent engineering disasters in these types of rocks. To address this issue,we have used the existing generalized maximum tangential stress(GMTS)and generalized maximum energy release rate(GMERR)criteria as the basis and introduced parameters related to micron-scale crack propagation and water action. The GMTS and GMERR criteria for micronscale crack propagation in red-bed soft rocks under hydraulic action(abbreviated as the Wmic-GMTS and Wmic-GMERR criteria, respectively)were established to evaluate micron-scale crack propagation in redbed soft rocks under hydraulic action. The influence of the parameters was also described. The process of micron-scale crack propagation under hydraulic action was monitored using uniaxial compression tests(UCTs)based on digital image correlation(DIC)technology. The study analyzed the length, propagation and inclination angles, and mechanical parameters of micron-scale crack propagation to confirm the reliability of the established criteria. The findings suggest that the Wmic-GMTS and Wmic-GMERR criteria are effective in describing the micron-scale crack propagation in red-bed soft rocks under hydraulic action. This study discusses the mechanism of micron-scale crack propagation and its effect on engineering disasters under hydraulic action. It covers topics such as the internal-external weakening of nano-scale particles, lateral propagation of micron-scale cracks, weakening of the mechanical properties of millimeter-scale soft rocks, and resulting interface damage at the engineering scale. The study provides a theoretical basis for the mechanism of disasters in red-bed soft-rock engineering under hydraulic action. 展开更多

In order to investigate the fatigue performance of orthotropic anisotropic steel bridge decks, this study realizes the simulation of the welding process through elastic-plastic finite element theory,thermal-structural sequential coupling, and the birth-death element method. The simulated welding residual stresses are introduced into the multiscale finite element model of the bridge as the initial stress.Furthermore, the study explores the impact of residual stress on crack propagation in the fatigue-vulnerable components of the corroded steel box girder. The results indicate that fatigue cracks at the weld toe of the top deck, the weld root of the top deck, and the opening of the transverse diaphragm will not propagate under the action of a standard vehicle load. However, the inclusion of residual stress leads to the propagation of these cracks. When considering residual stress, the fatigue crack propagation paths at the weld toe of the transverse diaphragm and the U-rib weld toe align with those observed in actual bridges. In the absence of residual stress, the cracks at the toe of the transverse diaphragm with a 15%mass loss rate are categorized as type I cracks.Conversely, when residual stress is considered, these cracks become I-II composite cracks.Residual stress significantly alters the cumulative energy release rate of the three fracturemodes. Therefore, incorporating the influence of residual stress is essential when assessing the fatigue performance of corroded steel box girders in long-span bridges. 展开更多

A ternary system of PTFE/Al/Bi_(2)O_(3)is constructed by incorporating PTFE-based reactive material and thermite for enhancing the energy release of the PTFE-based reactive material. The effects of Bi_(2)O_(3)in the PTFE/Al/Bi_(2)O_(3)on both mechanical properties and the energy release were investigated through various tests such as thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry, adiabatic oxygen bomb test and split Hopkinson pressure bar test. The microstructure observed through scanning electron microscope and Xray diffraction results are used to analyze the ignition and reaction mechanism of PTFE/Al/Bi_(2)O_(3).The results indicate that the PTFE/Al/Bi_(2)O_(3)are capable of triggering the exothermic reaction of molten PTFE/Bi_(2)O_(3)and Al/Bi_(2)O_(3)over the PTFE/Al reactive materials, thereby promoting reactions. The excessive aluminum in the ternary system is beneficial for increasing energy release. The ignition of shock-induced chemical reactions in PTFE/Al/Bi_(2)O_(3)is closely related to the material fracture. The dominant mechanism for hot-spot generation under Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar test is the frictional temperature rise at the microcrack after failure. 展开更多

The intrinsic relationships between energy dissipation, energy release, strength and abrupt structural failure are key to understanding the evolution of deformational processes in rocks.Theoretical and experimental studies confirm that energy plays an important role in rock deformation and failure.Dissipated energy from external forces produces damage and irreversible deformation within rock and decreases rock strength over time.Structural failure of rocks is caused by an abrupt release of strain energy that manifests as a catastrophic breakdown of the rock under certain conditions. The strain energy released in the rock volume plays a pivotal role in generating this abrupt structural failure in the rocks. In this paper,we propose criteria governing(1) the deterioration of rock strength based on energy dissipation and(2) the abrupt structural failure of rocks based on energy release. The critical stresses at the time of abrupt structural failure under various stress states can be determined by these criteria. As an example, the criteria have been used to analyze the failure conditions of surrounding rock of a circular tunnel. 展开更多

It is pretty challenging and difficult to quantitatively evaluate the intensity of dynamic disasters in deep mining engineering.Based on the uniaxial loading-unloading experiments for five types of rocks, this paper investigated the energy evolution characteristics, and identified the damage and crack propagation thresholds. Also, the fragment size distributions of the rocks after failure were analyzed. The energy release rate(Ge)and energy dissipation rate(Gd)were then proposed to describe the change of energies per unit volume and per unit strain. Results demonstrated that the more brittle rocks had the shorter stage of unstable crack growth and the lower induced damage at crack damage thresholds. The evolution characteristics of the strain energy rates can be easily identified by the crack propagation thresholds. The failure intensity index(FId),which equals to the values of Ge/Gd at the failure point, was further put forth. It can account for the brittleness of the rocks, the intensity of rock failure as well as the degree of rock fragmentation. It was revealed that a higher FId corresponded to a lower fractal dimension and stronger dynamic failure. 展开更多

Reactive Materials(RMs),a new material with structural and energy release characteristics under shockinduced chemical reactions, are promising in extensive applications in national defense and military fields. They can increase the lethality of warheads due to their dual functionality. This paper focuses on the energy release characteristics of RM casings prepared by alloy melting and casting process under explosive loading.Explosion experiments of RM and conventional 2A12 aluminum alloy casings were conducted in free field to capture the explosive fireballs, temperature distribution, peak overpressure of the air shock wave and the fracture morphology of fragments of reactive material(RM)warhead casings by using high-speed camera, infrared thermal imager temperature and peak overpressure testing and scanning electron microscope. Results showed that an increase of both the fireball temperature and air shock wave were observed in all RM casings compared to conventional 2A12 aluminum ally casings. The RM casings can improve the peak overpressure of the air shock wave under explosion loading, though the results are different with different charge ratios.According to the energy release characteristics of the RM,increasing the thickness of RM casings will increase the peak overpressure of the near-field air shock wave, while reducing the thickness will increase the peak overpressure of the far-field air shock wave. 展开更多

Coal and gas outburst is a violent disaster driven by released energy from gas desorption. The initial expansion energy of released gas(IEERG)is a new method to predict coal and gas outburst. In this paper,an instrument for IEERG measurement was developed.Compared with previous setups, the new one which is equipped with three convergent nozzles and quick-release mechanism gets improved in data acquisition and gas sealing and releasing performance. To comprehensively know the effect of gas pressure, particle size, and nozzle area on IEERG,a series of experiments were carried out with this new setup. The variable control test results indicated that the gas pressure-IEERG curves remain the linear trend and the particle size-IEERG curves maintain the negative exponential trend for nozzle areas at 1.13,2.26,and3.39 mm2,respectively.The increase in nozzle area leads to deceases in value of IEERG and absolute value of slope of fitting curves in each test.In addition, the orthogonal experiment showed that the influence of gas pressure, nozzle area, and particle size on IEERG decreases in turn.Only gas pressure had a marked impact on IEERG.This work offers great importance in improving the accuracy of prediction of coal and gas outburst. 展开更多

Numerical analysis of the total energy release of surrounding rocks excavated by drill-and-blast (D&B) method and tunnel boring machine (TBM) method is presented in the paper. The stability of deep tunnels during excavation in terms of energy release is also discussed. The simulation results reveal that energy release during blasting excavation is a dynamic process. An intense dynamic effect is captured at large excavation footage. The magnitude of energy release during full-face excavation with D&B method is higher than that with TBM method under the same conditions. The energy release rate (ERR) and speed (ERS) also have similar trends. Therefore, the rockbursts in tunnels excavated by D&B method are frequently encountered and more intensive than those by TBM method. Since the space after tunnel face is occupied by the backup system of TBM, prevention and control of rockbursts are more difficult. Thus, rockbursts in tunnels excavated by TBM method with the same intensity are more harmful than those in tunnels by D&B method. Reducing tunneling rate of TBM seems to be a good means to decrease ERR and risk of rockburst. The rockbursts observed during excavation of headrace tunnels at Jinping II hydropower station in West China confirm the analytical results obtained in this paper. 展开更多

In the fracture problems of hydrophilic elastic materials under coupling effects of heat conduction, moisture diffusion and mechanical deformation, the conventional J-integral is no longer path independent. The value of J is unequal to the energy release rate in hygrothermal coupling cases. In the present paper, we derived a general form of the energy release rate for hygrothermal fracture problems of the hydrophilic elastic materials on the basis of energy balance equation in cracked areas. By introducing the constitutive relations and the essential equations of irreversible thermodynamics, a specific expression of the energy release rate was obtained, and the expression can be reformmulated as path independent integrals, which is equivalent to the energy release rate of the fracture body. The path independence of the integrals is then verified numerically. 展开更多

The fracture behavior of ferroelectrics has been intensively studied in recent decades, though currently a widely accepted fracture mechanism is still lacking. In this work, enlightened by previous experimental observations that crack propagation in ferroelectrics is always accompanied by domain switching, we propose a micromechanical model in which both crack propagation and domain switching are controlled by energy-based criteria. Both electric energy and mechanical energy can induce domain switching, while only mechanical energy can drive crack propagation. Furthermore, constrained domain switching is considered in this model, leading to the gradient domain switching zone near the crack tip. Analysis results show that stress-induced ferroelastic switching always has a toughening effect as the mechanical energy release rate serves as the driving force for both fracture and domain switching. In comparison, the electric-field-induced switching may have either a toughening or detoughening effect. The proposed model can qualitatively agree with the existing experimental results. 展开更多
