The results of comparison show that such a model can improve the computational speed and preserve the precision. Some characteristics of the EDFA are then analyzed using this model. Proposed is a novel optical pulse compression technique based on high-doped erbium fiber amplifier and standard single-mode fiber(SMF). We used the amplifier with the erbium ion concentration of 6.3×10-3 to amplify a hyperbolic secant pulse from a regeneratively mode-locked fiber laser. The central wavelength, pulsewidth and peak power of the pulse are 1 550 nm, 12.5 ps and 3 mW, respectively. Then the amplified pulse with peak power level corresponding to a higher-order soliton is compressed when it propagates through a 3-km-long single-mode fiber. Studied are the compressed pulses under different pump powers and fiber lengths. The results show that it can get a narrower pulse, and solve the difficulty that pulses at low power can not be compressed directly in the fiber. And the construct is compact. 展开更多

In this paper, new configuration is proposed, investigated and analyzed. Fiber laser and fiber amplifier are merged in one configuration which called Erbium Doped Fiber Laser and Amplifier (EDFLA) or integrating EDFL and EDFA in one design. The configuration has three main outputs;one for laser, second for amplifier and the third it can be used for on/off output. A surprising phenomenon was remarked during the operation of this configuration. The amplification is abolished during the lasing state and appeared again if the lasing is stopped or the switch is off. The difference between outputs with the lasing and without lasing has 30 dB EDFA gain value;it is a good sign that this optical configuration can be used as an on/off integrated optical device for fiber laser. 展开更多

To improve the pump efficiency, the power of the pump is split into two parts (with a ratio of e.g. 2:7). It is crucial to study the effect of radiation on the fiber amplifier devices. In the present paper, the Erbium-ytterbium co-doped fiber amplifier (EYDFA) has been irradiated by a neutron beam of different doses for various exposure times from an Am-241/Be-9 neutron source. The gain and noise figure of the EYDFA have been calculated theoretically and recorded after and before the irradiation to test its performance under the effect of irradiation. In order to show the enhancement in the gain of the fiber amplifier devices, a comparison between the gain of the irradiated EYDFA and Erbium doped Fiber amplifier (EDFA) has been carried out. The calculated results by the proposed model are in good agreement with the experimental ones. It indicates that the gain of EYDFA deteriorates after being irradiated by a neutron dose. Moreover, the gain of irradiated EYDFA has been reduced to 13.8 dB at a dose of 720 Gy. 展开更多

Two kinds of double clad fibers(DCF) with rectangular and "flower" inner clad shapes are studied, and these fibers have different coupling constants and propagation losses. We calculate the effective pump power absorption ratio along the fiber with different coupling constants from the first cladding to the doped core and with different propagation losses for the power in the inner cladding. Then the gains of the double clad Er-doped fiber amplifiers versus fiber lengths are calculated using the EDFA model based on propagation and rate equations of a homogeneous, two-level medium. 展开更多

Optical channel pre-emphasis equalization is experimentally researched for a 270 km 40 × 40 Gbit/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system with three Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (ED- FAs) and Raman amplifiers concatenated as booster amplifier. The channel imbalance of the overall system changes with different sets of power launched into EDFAs. By appropriately choosing the power input to concatenated EDFAs, the output spectrum of 40 channel signal can be equalized to the most extent. The merit of benefit can be around 5.5 dB by this pre-emphasis equalization. The requirement for the gain equalizer is therefore greatly released. Then the gain imbalance of the overall system and the power imbalance of 40 channels are compared and the two almost matches, but the significant difference lies on some channels. Finally, the pump power into Raman amplifier is also optimized, and another 1.3 dB improvement of channel equaliza- tion can be further achieved. 展开更多

Er^3+-doped phosphor-tellurite glass for broadband short-length Er^3+-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is fabricated and characterized. The differential value (AT) of onset crystalline temperature (Tx) and glass transition temperature (Tg) is 206 ℃. The stimulated emission cross section of Er^3+ is calculated from absorption spectrum by McCumber theory and is 0.87 × 10 ^-20 cm^2 at 1532 nm. A broad 1.5-μm fluorescence spectrum with 54-nm full-width at half maximum (FWHM) is demonstrated. Especially, the maximum phonon energy of undoped phosphor-tellurite glass is 1100 cm^- 1, which restricts the upconversion luminescence. It is possible to pump efficiently at 980 nm. These results indicate Er^3+-doped phosphor-tellurite glass is suitable for fabricating broadband short-length EDFA. 展开更多

由于光纤类器件对于辐射十分敏感,考虑到卫星光通信特定的辐射环境,要想采用地面已非常成熟的外调制技术,必须分析外调制技术中的核心器件EDFA在其中的可行性。采用60Co作为辐射源,国内首次对ED-FA及其内部重要组件隔离器和WDM耦合器进... 由于光纤类器件对于辐射十分敏感,考虑到卫星光通信特定的辐射环境,要想采用地面已非常成熟的外调制技术,必须分析外调制技术中的核心器件EDFA在其中的可行性。采用60Co作为辐射源,国内首次对ED-FA及其内部重要组件隔离器和WDM耦合器进行了高剂量轨道和低剂量轨道辐照模拟实验,实验结果表明在总剂量为5krad的低剂量辐照情况下,EDFA在-2dBm的输入时,输出功率由辐照前的14.3dBm下降到14dBm,其它各组件的性能变化不是很大,可以直接使用,而在总剂量为1000krad的高剂量辐照情况下,输出功率下降到-25.3dBm,耦合器也产生了大约8dB的损耗,由于其性能下降明显,若在此种环境下使用,需考虑做空间辐射防护。 展开更多
