In order to characterize the features of radium isotopes in estuaries of Tianjin,a continuous survey and sampling of typical estuaries were conducted from 2013 to 2017 in this study. The activities of natural radioactive radium isotopes(^(223)Ra,^(224)Ra,and ^(228)Ra)in groundwater and surface water were measured by the radium-delayed coincidence counting(RaDeCC)system. The non-conservative behavior of the radium isotopes was investigated under hydrogeochemical conditions and urbanization. The results indicated that in terms of horizontal distribution, the activities of radium in groundwater(Hangu,Tanggu, and Dagang)showed an upward trend from north to south and demonstrated a higher figure than surface water(Haihe River and Duliujian River).Concerning the vertical distribution, the activitives of radium at a 15 m burial depth was higher than that at a 30 m burial depth in all measurements. The activities of radium isotopes in the study area increased with the increase of total dissolved solids, and their desorption behavior on Fe-Mn oxides was constrained by the redox intensity.Different hydrogeological conditions resulted in variations in the vertical profile of radium activities. The activity of radium was regulated by seasonal variation and precipitation in groundwater and surface water. In addition, the rapid urbanization has caused a significant impact on the features of radium isotopes in typical estuaries of Tianjin.Meanwhile, radium isotopes can be applied to reflect the impact of urbanization on surface watergroundwater systems.Clarifying and cleverly utilizing the relationship between behavior of radium isotopes and urbanization will promote the development of the Tianjin Binhai New Area in a healthy way. 展开更多

Persistent organic pollutants(POPs) such as organochlorine pesticides are of global concern due to their widespread occurrence and persistence. This paper reports recent research studying the distribution and fate of organochlorine pesticides in the Jiulong River, the Minjiang River and the Pearl River estuaries in Southeast China. Eighteen organochlorine pesticides were extracted from water, pore water and sediment samples, followed by analysis by GC ECD. The results showed that the contamination levels were similar in these three estuaries. The levels of the total organochlorine pesticides in porewater were significantly higher than those in surface water, due to the high affinity of these hydrophobic compounds for sediment phase. Among the hexachlorocyclohexane(HCH) compounds, β HCH was found to be the most important isomer. The analysis of 1,1,1 trichloro 2,2 bis chlorophenyl ethane(DDT) and its metabolites showed that 1,1 dichloro 2[ o chlorophenyl] 2[ p chlorophenyl] ethylene(DDE) was dominant in the group. 展开更多

Zooplankton was major indicator species of the environment. To explore the effect of marine environment on zooplankton distribution in the coast of China, the zooplankton samples from stations in Guanhe Estuary(GE), Changjiang(Yangtze River) Estuary(CE), Oujiang Estuary(OE), Jiulongjiang Estuary(JE) and Beilun Estuary(BE)(covering 14 latitudes) in spring were surveyed and the variation of zooplankton ecological group was researched. According to the adaptability temperature, the zooplankton was divided into two ecological groups: warm-temperate species and subtropical species. The warm-temperate species was the main dominant species and subtropical species was only dominant species in BE. Calanus sinicus, a warm-temperate species, was the only dominant species in all five estuaries. From north to south, the proportion of warm-temperate species in the five estuaries gradually decreased depends on the number, were 83.33%, 48.39%, 45.00%, 43.75% and 30.43%, respectively. In contrary, the proportion of subtropical species was gradually increased. The warm-temperate species predominated over the total abundance and the percentage was whopping high in the north estuaries, including GE(96.16%), CE(95.57%), OE(97.83%) and JE(95.53%). The abundance percentage of subtropical species have remarkably higher(82.39%) in BE. Five estuaries zooplankton community was subdivided into three zooplankton groups, which were the northern warm temperate zooplankton group, the southern subtropical zooplankton group and the estuarine brackish-water group. The water temperature and coastal current of China Sea are recognized as the main factors determining the distribution and community structure of estuarine zooplankton in spring. 展开更多

The distinctive estuary hydrodynamics and nutrient input make the estuary ecosystem play a key role in lake ecosystems. The Nanfei River and Zhaohe River are two main inlets of Chaohu Lake,Anhui,East China. We selected estuaries of the two rivers as representative areas to study temporal and spatial changes of bacterial communities. In August(summer)and November(autumn)2016 and February(winter)and May(spring)2017,16 water and sediment samples were collected from the estuaries.Physicochemical characteristics indicate significant differences in the nutritional status and eutrophication index of the estuaries due mainly to organic input.Examination of the number of operational taxonomic units, the diversity index, the community composition, and redundancy analysis revealed the following.First, the existence of varying degrees of seasonal differences in the distribution of almost all bacteria. In addition, the species diversity in the sediment samples was higher than that in the water samples, and the dominant species differed also among these samples.Second,a large number of unknown genera were detected, especially in the sediment samples, such as unclassified Xanthomonadales incertae sedis, unclassified Anaerolineaceae, and unclassified Alcaligenaceae.Last,TP,TN,and TOC were the main influential factors that affected the bacterial community structure. 展开更多

Aggregation is used to represent the real world in a model at an appropriate level of abstraction. We used the convection-diffusion equation to examine the implications of aggregation progressing from a three-dimensional(3D)spatial description to a model representing a system as a single box that exchanges sediment with the adjacent environment. We highlight how all models depend on some forms of parametric closure, which need to be chosen to suit the scale of aggregation adopted in the model. All such models are therefore aggregated and make use of some empirical relationships to deal with sub-scale processes. One such appropriately aggregated model, the model for the aggregated scale morphological interaction between tidal basin and adjacent coast(ASMITA),is examined in more detail and used to illustrate the insight that this level of aggregation can bring to a problem by considering how tidal inlets and estuaries are impacted by sea level rise. 展开更多

In this study, field observations were conducted after a heavy rainfall event in the Sumida and Shakujii rivers in Tokyo,Japan. The flow dynamics and fluxes of salt, suspended sediment(SS),and dissolved oxygen(DO)were investigated with the mass balance method. The fractions of fresh water and saltwater in seaward and landward flows were separated. The maximum salt flux in the Shakujii River was 53.8 kg/s during the flood tide, and those in the Sumida River were 680.3 kg/s at the upstream station and 703.7 kg/s at the downstream station. The trends of SS and DO fluxes were similar in both rivers. In the Shakujii River, the highest SS(3.1 kg/s)and DO(0.4 kg/s)fluxes appeared during the flood tide after rainfall. In the Sumida River, the maximum SS fluxes(6.1 and 6.3 kg/s at the upstream and downstream stations, respectively)and DO fluxes(1.15 and 1.21 kg/s at the upstream and downstream stations, respectively)appeared during the ebb tide. The mass balance method was used to estimate discharge, salinity,SS concentration, and DO concentration at a station with missing data. The results show that the estimated salinity and SS concentration had a significant correlation with the on-site observations, with correlation coefficients(R)of 0.950 and 0.835,respectively,but not for DO concentration(R?0.638).The disparity between the computed and measured data may be explained by the differences in velocity, salinity, topography, sedimentation, and the presence of organic matter. The analysis based on the advective salt transport components found a lower salt flux per unit width in the Shakujii River(0.36 kg/(m·s))in comparison with that in the Sumida River(2.88 kg/(m·s)).This indicates a higher probability for salt retention in the Shakujii River.©2020 Hohai University.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.This is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/). 展开更多

Vegetation and soil within estuarine ecosystems play an integral role in ecological processes within pocket estuaries. However, physical barriers, caused by culverts diminish hydrological inputs, sediment exchange, and habitat connectivity. The restoration of estuaries by bridge replacement reconnects <span>the aquatic corridor, however, the recovery of plant communities and soil s</span>ubstrate is not well understood. This observational study monitored four estuary restoration sites of variable ages (0 - 12 years) in Western Washington, USA. Plant community composition, soil organic carbon, organic matter, and soil nutrients were assessed. Percent soil carbon was different among the pre-restoration and youngest (3-year) post-restoration site (<i>P</i> = 0.03), suggesting an initial decrease in carbon and organic matter during restoration. Both N and P were deficient at the newest, lower restoration site, presumably linked to the lack of organic matter required for adequate cation exchange capacity and nutrient/plant exchange (<i>P</i> < 0.05). Plant species diversity was higher at the intermediate (9-year) and oldest post-restoration sites (12-year;<i>P</i> = 0.02). Vegetation composition was primarily native species with few invasive plants present. The results of this study illustrate that tidal marsh plant communities are influenced by the development of salinity and vertical gradients with older sites having an increase in species diversity. Future surveys are ongoing to <span>better understand how these sites recover organic matter and tidal marsh co</span>mmunities to form adequate estuarine habitat over time. 展开更多

Inconsistencies between datasets are examined with reference to flood tidal elevations in the Tamar River estuary, Tasmania Australia. Errors in a 30-year-old commonly cited dataset have been perpetuated in subsequent publications and datasets, and a clarification is herein provided. Elevation of the flood tidal wave as it propagates the estuary is evident in mean tide level and mean sea level, although the analysis is compromised by the temporal differences of the datasets. As sea levels rise due to global warming, the importance of accurate on-going sea level data in any estuary will become more acute. 展开更多

An analytic model is developed to investigate the barotropic tidally driven residual exchange flow in shallow estuaries. Ebb dominated flow in deep channel and flood dominated flow on the shoals produced by the model are consistent with some observations in tidal rivers and shallow estuaries . Analysis shows that this type of exchange flow is caused by the combined effect of nonlinearity and the lateral variation of the depth. The inward flux is mainly due to the surface elevation of the wave . A seaward residual pressure gradient has to be maintained to drive the water outward for mass balance. Since the surface elevation in an estuary has only small lateral variation , the depth integrated pressure force is mainly dependent on the depth whose value in the channel is larger than that on the shoals. As a result, theretum flow in the channel is larger than that on the shoals. An ebb-flood flow spstem is thus generated. 展开更多

A theoretical expression for vertical profile of horizontal velocity in terms of its depth-average is derived based on osciillatory boundary layer theory and estuarine flow characteristics. The derived theoretical profile is then incorporated into a vertical quasi-two-dimensional model, which is proved advantageous in more physical implications and less CPU time demand. To validate the proposed model, the calculated results are compared to the field data in the Yangtze River Estuary, exhibiting good agreement with observations. The proposed quasi-two-dimensional vertical model is used to study mixing process, especially dependence of salinity distribution and salt front strength on runoff and tides in estuaries. 展开更多

To study the stratified stability of a water column in the North Passage of the Yangtze River Estuary,a numerical model of the hydrodynamics of this estuary is established using the EFDC model. On the basis of EFDC results, this paper derives and pro-vides the discriminative index of water body stability caused by salinity and analyzes the along-range variation in water body strati-fication stability in the North Passage of the Yangtze River Estuary and the periodic variation at a key location(bend area)based on the simulation results of the numerical model. This work shows that the water body in the bend area varies between mixed and strati-fied types, and the vertical average flow velocity has a good negative correlation with the differential velocity between the surface and bottom layers of the water body. The model simulation results validate the formulae for the stratified stability discriminant during spring tides. 展开更多

The estuarine areas are under frequent influence from freshwater intrusion and ocean currents,in which zooplankton species are diversified and variable as they are sensitive to physio-chemical variations in water. Therefore, understanding the relationships between zooplankton and environmental factors help us know the water quality. To achieve co-existence with species in similar ecological group or habit, they could inevitably alter themselves to fit the ecology and adjust the function according to the competitive exclusion in ecological theory. However, information of the co-existence of dominant species in the Changjiang(Yangtze)River estuary(CRE)and adjacent waters remains scarce. We explored the relationships between dominant zooplankton and environmental factors in the study region in spring-summer from 2016 to 2020,involving particularly the composition of dominant species, ecological groups, their relationships with environmental factors, and co-existence of important species, using the non-multidimensional scale analysis(nMDS)method and redundancy analysis. Results show that Labidocera euchaeta and Tortanus vermiculus were dominant species in the study scope. The turnover rate of dominant zooplankton was greater(>50%)in spring while the species number was higher in summer. The dominant species were estuarine, offshore, and eurytopic based on the adaptation to salinity. In spring, the ecological groups were dominated by estuarine species, while in summer by estuarine and offshore species. In addition, the nMDS showed that the dominant species in the same ecological group were more dispersed and not prominently clustered;the dominant species were staggered among different ecological groups. The temperature, salinity,pH,dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll a were the main environmental factors on the distribution of the dominant species in spring, while in summer were dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, and pH.The domination of medusae of Nemopsis bachei and Pleurobrachia globosa in zooplankton community in spring, and the continuous decrease in abundance of L.euchaeta reflected the effects of local climate change. The temperature and salinity changes in different years and the subsequent response of zooplankton reflected the influence of freshwater intrusion and/or ocean currents.Zooplankton in similar ecological habits exhibited the competitive exclusion in terms of co-existence. 展开更多

This study investigated the presence of pharmaceuticals in the water and sediment of Buffalo and Sundays River Estuary,South Africa.Extraction for water and sediment samples was achieved with solidphase extraction and ultrasonic extraction methods, respectively.Quantification of the target analytes was done with UPLC-QTOF-MS.The pH of surface water in all the sampling sites(8.18-10.1)were above the WHO guideline(6.5).A good correlation was observed between the concentrations of analytes with organic matter and organic carbon. Results showed that carbamazepine exhibited the highest concentration(8.75±1.45 mg/kg)of all the pharmaceuticals, while trimethoprim has the highest detection frequency with the highest concentration of 1.62±0.83 mg/kg in the sediment samples.Sulfamethoxazole was below the detection limit in both estuaries.Calculated risk quotients revealed that carbamazepine and trimethoprim could be of potential risk, while caffeine may pose a very low risk to the aquatic organisms investigated.Proper monitoring of the runoff entering Buffalo Estuary is required, being the point of discharge of Buffalo River to the Indian Ocean. Also, the domestic waste discharge from residences in the surroundings of Sundays Estuary should be monitored. 展开更多

Incorporation of the Barnegat Bay into the US National Estuary Program has triggered collection and collation of basic data sets appropriate to estuarine management. Gathering of water quality and quantity as well as basic geological data is adding to the knowledge of the complexity of the bay. An ongoing program of systematic sampling of bottom sediments in the large bay and intense sampling in the many micro-estuaries along the mainland margin is demonstrating the presence of localized mor-pho-sedimentological units related to the interaction of the fluvial, tidal, and wave processes active in the bay. Mean grain sizes and standard deviation measures assist in the development of signatures of bottom sediment types. 展开更多
