Language is an indispensible carrier of culture. Many words have their origins in religion, mythology stories and literary works. Looking at English vocabulary from an etymological perspective is a good way to go in teaching college English vocabulary. This paper gives a brief introduction about the characteristics of English vocabulary and some advantages of teaching vocabulary from an etymological perspective, also, suggestions in using etymological perspective to teach college English vocabulary.展开更多

In the form of linguistics, language is a form of system, the research is in the form of the combination of form and meaning, language learning is rules and skills to master. In systemic functional linguistics, language is a system the study is in the context of significance. Language learning, therefore, the use of language, masters the language knowledge and skills in practice and the social culture. From a social point of view of language learning, language learning is no longer the pure knowledge and skills to master the cognitive process of memory, but a process of social interaction between individuals. Our research starts form the in-depth analysis of the etymology to propose novel perspective that is innovative and meaningful.展开更多

The sample (N = 70) involved two intact groups of coll...This study investigates differential effects of etymological elaboration and rote memorization on idiom acquisition and retention in Chinese college EFL learners. The sample (N = 70) involved two intact groups of college students. Subjects in one group exposed to instruction in the form of etymological familiarity while subjects in the comparison group were asked to memorize idioms on the basis of their given meaning. Subjects were then administered two post-tests: one to assess initial idiom acquisition, and another four weeks later to assess idiom retention. Statistical analyses produced sufficient support for both the first hypothesis (that the etymological elaboration condition would acquire more idioms than the rote memorization condition), and the second hypothesis—that the etymological familiarity would exhibit superior retention rates. The finding of this study suggests that for the purpose of encouraging long-term retention, elaborating on the original usage of idioms is preferable to requiring students to learn idioms by rote.展开更多
Most previous studies have held that the system of Tubo gaoshen(an honorary identity mark)was an imitation of a similar system in the Tang dynasty,referring to the latter's official costume decorations for its str...Most previous studies have held that the system of Tubo gaoshen(an honorary identity mark)was an imitation of a similar system in the Tang dynasty,referring to the latter's official costume decorations for its stratified office-holders.These studies have not given due attention to the characteristics of the title itself.From the perspective of the change of the Tibetan name and based on existing research results and historical records in both Tibetan and Chinese,this article tries to offer a new understanding and preliminary discussion on the development of Tubo gaoshen and several related issues.We find that there are two paths in the evolution of its name:One is from Sugto Yi Ge or Yig,the other is from Yig tsang to Yig tshangs.The former is used to denote a concrete gaoshen and can be added as a prefix while the latter denotes the abstract idea of gaoshen and no attribute can be used before it.When the two are used together,the latter is used before the former,such as in:yig tshangs pa ni zangs kyi yi ge gtong/(As to the gaoshen[yig tshangs],[he]is awarded a bronze yi ge).展开更多
