The origins of autism and schizophrenia, their persistence and heterogeneity can be understood by integrating information from genomic science, the social brain and the evolution of socialization, intelligence and language. Both conditions are associated with structural changes in the genome, specifically copy number variants. Such systemic mutations contribute to an unstable and mutable genome and have been especially notable during primate > hominid evolution. Along with mechanisms that affect gene expression, they contribute to a genome characterized by variability and evolvability. A dynamic and variable genome is reflected by a high degree of phenotypic variation. This, in turn, is reflected in the diversity of neurodevelopmental disorders, in particular autism and schizophrenia. Evolvability is more than a dispositional concept, it is a trait in its own right. In the special case of hominid evolution, evolvability has been both an independent and a dependent variable. Evolution of the modern human brain seems to have arisen during the cultivation of unstable regions in the genome that were conducive to a high degree of inter-individual and inter-generational variation. The consequence of even small aberrations in evolutionary processes and phenotypic variations is most likely to be manifest in the functions of the social brain: self-referential processing, perspective taking and the dual components of empathy;also language as well as intelligence itself. The trade-off is a dynamic genome that can rearrange itself in untoward ways and may be felt in one or more of the above functions. The occurrence of neurodevelopmental disorders ranging from the learning disabilities and ADD to autism and schizophrenia, are epiphenomenal to a genome that is unstable and mutable. The selective advantage of such a genome is the runaway evolution of positive prosocial and intellective traits. If there is a core to the pathology that emerges in autism and schizophrenia, it is at the genomic level, and is probably related to the unique evolvability of the human genome. Genetic transformation as an agent of evolvability is necessarily associated with untoward consequences. Just as point mutations may have deleterious effects, so do genomic transformations. The neurodevelopmental disorders, therefore, are the consequence of evolvability.展开更多

Previous bipartite models were proposed to mostly explain the principle of attachments, and ignored the diverse growth speed of nodes of sets in different bipartite networks. In this paper, we propose an evolving bipartite network model with adjustable node scale and hybrid attachment mechanisms, which uses different probability parameters to control the scale of two disjoint sets of nodes and the preference strength of hybrid attachment respectively. The results show that the degree distribution of single set in the proposed model follows a shifted power-law distribution when parameter r and s are not equal to 0, or exponential distribution when r or s is equal to 0. Furthermore, we extend the previous model to a semi-bipartite network model, which embeds more user association information into the internal network, so that the model is capable of carrying and revealing more deep information of each user in the network. The simulation results of two models are in good agreement with the empirical data, which verifies that the models have a good performance on real networks from the perspective of degree distribution. We believe these two models are valuable for an explanation of the origin and growth of bipartite systems that truly exist.展开更多

Diverse bacteria contain cGAS-like enzymes that produce cyclic oligonucleotides and induce antiphageactivity, known as CBASS. However, this activity has only been demonstrated through heterologous expression. Whetherbacteria harboring CBASS antagonize and co-evolve with phages is unknown. Here, we identified an endogenous cGAS-likeenzyme in Pseudomonas aeruginosa that generates 3',3'-cGAMP during phage infection, signals to a phospholipase effector, andlimits phage replication. In response, phages express an anti-CBASS protein ("Acb2") that forms a hexamer with three 3',3'-cGAMP molecules and reduces phospholipase activity. Acb2 also binds to molecules produced by other bacterial cGAS-likeenzymes (3',3'-cUU/UA/UG/AA) and mammalian cGAS (2',3'-cGAMP), suggesting broad inhibition of cGAS-based immunity.Upon Acb2 deletion, CBASS blocks lytic phage replication and lysogenic induction, but rare phages evade CBASS through majorcapsid gene mutations. Altogether, we demonstrate endogenous CBASS anti-phage function and strategies of CBASS inhibitionand evasion.展开更多

文摘China’s Belt and Road Initiative is now in its tenth year.Practical experience has shown that the countries that comprise the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN)make up a favorable region for Chinese entrepreneurs to expand their overseas endeavors,a region that has the potential to evolve into a model area for the BRI.
文摘The current article is an opinion on the sensitivity of high mountain regions which are the most fragile, sensitive and vulnerable to ongoing climate change. Its impacts are especially severe on the high mountain communities owing to their weak socio-economic profile, limited livelihood resources and agricultural land. The melting of glaciers and changes in the snow cover under the climate change scenario is leading to the scarcity of freshwater supplies, affecting both local and downstream communities.Changes in the precipitation patterns have been suggested to cause droughts, impact restricted agriculture, and limit the availability of water for domestic use.Additionally, the high mountain areas contain distinct flora and fauna, and climate change is not just altering them, but also has resulted in biodiversity loss as species are unable to adapt to the changing climate.Because of its higher altitudes and semi-arid to arid climate, the consequences of climate change are more evident in the higher Himalayas.Climate change is affecting the availability of key resources, such as freshwater and agriculture and pasture lands, resulting in food and water insecurity and their reliance on imports from other regions. As a result, high mountain communities in the Himalayas are progressively shifting to higher glacier valleys in search of suitable cultivable land with adequate irrigation.People are engaging in agro-pastoral activities around thermokarst lakes(Oasis)atop rock glaciers as part of this endeavour.Such actions underscore the crucial role of rock glaciers in dealing with and adjusting to the consequences of climate change.Despite its relevance, rock glacier research in the Himalayan region is still in its infancy. The purpose of this work is to emphasise the significance of these major climate-resilient water resources,as well as the methodology that must be adopted for their systematic and compressive investigations.
文摘The bipartite graph structure exists in the connections of many objects in the real world, and the evolving modeling is a good method to describe and understand the generation and evolution within various real complex networks. We believe these two models are valuable for an explanation of the origin and growth of bipartite systems that truly exist.
文摘A fundamental strategy of eukaryotic antiviral immunity involves the cGAS enzyme, which synthesizes 2',3'-cGAMP andactivates the effector STING. Altogether, we demonstrate endogenous CBASS anti-phage function and strategies of CBASS inhibitionand evasion.
