The improved Intermig impeller has been used in the seed precipitation tank in China, which could enhance the mixing and suspension of Al(OH)3 particles and the power consumption declined largely. The flow field, solids hold-up, cloud height, just off-bottom speed and power consumptions were investigated in solid-liquid mixing system with this new type of impeller by CFD and water experiment methods. Compared with the standard Intermig impeller, the improved one coupled with specially sloped baffles could promote the fluid circulation, create better solids suspension and consume less power. Besides lower impeller off-bottom clearance is good for solid suspension and distribution. The just-off-bottom speed was also determined by a power number criterion. Meanwhile, the predicted results were in good agreement with the experimental data. 展开更多

This study investigates the roll decay of a fishing vessel by experiments and computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations.A fishing vessel roll decay is tested experimentally for different initial roll angles. The roll decay is also simulated numerically by CFD simulations and is validated against the experimental results. It shows that the roll damping could be obtained by CFD with high level of accuracy. The linear and nonlinear damping terms are extracted from the CFD roll decay results and are used in a potential-based solver. In this way we are using a hybrid solver that benefits the accuracy of the CFD results in terms of roll damping estimation and the fast computations of the potential-based solver at the same time. This hybrid method is used for reproducing the free roll decays at Fn=0 and also in analyzing some cases in waves. The experiments,CFD and the hybrid parts are described in detail. It is shown that the suggested method is capable of doing the simulations in a very short time with high level of accuracy. This strategy could be used for many seakeeping analyses. 展开更多

The applications of nanotechnology in oilfields have attracted the attention of researchers to nanofluid injection as a novel approach for enhanced oil recovery. To better understand the prevailing mechanisms in such new displacement scenarios, micromodel experiments provide powerful tools to visually observe the way that nanoparticles may mobilize the trapped oil.In this work, the e ect of silicon oxide nanoparticles on the alteration of wettability of glass micromodels was investigated in both experimental and numerical simulation approaches. The displacement experiments were performed on the original water-wet and imposed oil-wet(after aging in stearic acid/n-heptane solution) glass micromodels. The results of injection of nanofluids into the oil-saturated micromodels were then compared with those of the water injection scenarios. The flooding scenarios in the micromodels were also simulated numerically with the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method. A good agreement between the experimental and simulation results was observed. An increase of 9% and 13% in the oil recovery was obtained by nanofluid flooding in experimental tests and CFD calculations, respectively. 展开更多

Today, many underground mines still face difficulty in compliance with DPM regulations. The DPM research carried out in Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) is to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the DPM distribution in commonly used face areas. The result is expected to be used for selection of DPM reduction strategies and better working practices, which can help the underground mines to meet regulation limits and improve the working environment for the miners. An experiment was conducted at MST's Experimental Mine to validate CFD simulation. DPM was collected at four locations downstream of a stationary diesel engine. The experiment data were then compared with the CFD simulation results. The comparison shows that CFD simulation can forecast the location of DPM concentration with practical accuracy (less than 0.15 m). CFD can be used to further study DPM distribution in commonly used working faces and give guidance to DPM reduction. 展开更多

In this study, a continuous and airtight twin-spiral dryer was developed in accordance with the characteristics and challenges in the process of disposing polysilicon slurry. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to investigate the flow field in the rotating twin-spiral continuous dryer and an original discrete phase model was also elaborated to compare with the cold-modeling experimental results. The corresponding flow field was obtained using the available inlet velocity of 0.05–0.3 m/s and the rotational speed of the inner cone of 12–44 r/min, the residence time distribution, and tracked particles trajectory. Results showed that the residence time of the tracer particles in the cone cylinder was about 15.8–25.4% of the time spent out of it, and the particle’s residence time was much shorter in contrast to the rotational speed and inlet velocity. The external ribbon had a larger influence on the fluid, thereby leading to a larger velocity in the region outside the cone compared to that in the region inside the cone. In addition, the appearance of the vortex and boundary layer separation at the back of the ribbon and the spoke bar had secondary diversion effects on the fluid. Furthermore, the inlet velocity had little influence on the flow field while the rotational speed of the cone greatly affected the flow field. Hence, the CFD simulations showed good agreement with the experimental results. © 2017 Tianjin University and Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany 展开更多

This paper focuses on a two-dimensional CFD simulation of a downdraft gasifier and a pilot-scale experiment for verification using wood pellet fuel. The simulation work was carried out via the ANSYS-Fluent CFD software package with in-house coding via User Defined Function.Three gasification parameters were taken into account in the simulation and validation to achieve highly accurate results;namely, fuel consumption, temperature profile, and syngas composition. After verification of the developed model, the effects of aspect ratios on temperature and syngas composition were investigated. Results from simulation and experimental work indicated that the fuel consumption rate during the steady state gasification experiment was 1.750±0.048 g/s.The average steady state temperature of the experiment was 1240.32±14.20 K.In sum,the fuel consumption and temperature profile during gasification from modeling and experimentation show an error lower than 1.3%.Concentrations of CO,CO2,H2,and CH4 were 20.42 vol%,15.09 vol%,8.02 vol%,and 2.6 vol%,respectively, which are comparable to those of the experiment:20.00 vol%,15.48 vol%,8.00 vol%,and 2.65 vol%.A high concentration of syngas is observed in the outer radial part of the reactor because of the resistive flow of the air inlet and the synthesis gas produced. The average temperatures during the steady state of the gasifier with aspect ratios(H/D)of 1.00,1.38(experiment),and 1.82 were 978.77±11.60,1256.46±9.90,and 1368.94±9.20 K,respectively. The 1.82 aspect ratio reactor has the smallest diameter, therefore the radiative heat transferred from the reactor wall affects the temperature in the reactor.Syngas compositions are comparable.Inverse relationships between the aspect ratios and the syngas LHV,(4.29–4.49 MJ/N m3),cold gas efficiency(29.66%to 31.00%),and carbon conversion(79.59%to 80.87%)are observed. 展开更多

Seven adjustments of convergent-type Vortex Tube (VT) with different throttle angles were applied. The adjustments were made to analyze the influences of such angles on cold and hot temperature drops as well as flow structures inside the VTs. An experimental setup was designed, and tests were performed on different convergent VT configurations at injection pressures ranging from 0.45 to 0.65 MPa. The angles of the throttle valve were arranged between 30° to 90°, and the numbers of injection nozzles ranged between 2 and 6. Laboratory results indicated that the maximum hot and cold temperature drops ranged from 23.24 to 35 K and from 22.87 to 32.88 K, respectively, at four injection nozzles. Results also showed that temperature drop is a function of hot throttle valve angle with the maximum hot and cold temperature drops depending on the angle applied. We used graphs to demonstrate the changes in the cold and hot temperature drops with respect to hot throttle angle values. These values were interpreted and evaluated to determine the optimum angle, which was 60°. The CFD outputs agreed very well with the laboratory results. The proposed CFD results can help future researchers gain good insights into the complicated separation process taking place inside the VTs. 展开更多

This paper presents the experimental pressure loss of water flow through perforated plates with geometry similar to the ones of the bottom end piece of a Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) fuel element. Geometric features like the number, pattern and diameter of holes were evaluated as well as different inlet chamfers. The recovering pressure profile downstream of the plates was also measured. The experimental results were compared with numerical modeling performed with the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code CFX 11.0. The analysis of the results shows that the standard k-e turbulence model presents the best compromise between computing time and accuracy for the calculation of the total pressure loss through the perforated plates tested. 展开更多

This paper reports experimental and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) studies on the performance of microfiltration enhanced by a helical screw insert. The experimental results show that the use of turbulence pro-moter can improve the permeate flux of membrane in the crossflow microfiltration of calcium carbonate suspension, and flux improvement efficiency is strongly influenced by operation conditions. The energy consumption analysis indicates that the enhanced membrane system is more energy saving at higher feed concentrations. To explore the intrinsic mechanism of flux enhancement by a helical screw insert,three-dimensional CFD simulation of fluid flow was implemented. It reveals that hydrodynamic characteristics of fluid flow inside the channel are entirely changed by the turbulence promoter. The rotational flow pattern increases the scouring effect on the tube wall, reducing the particle deposition on the membrane surface. The absence of stagnant regions and high wall shear stress are respon-sible for the enhanced filtration performance. No secondary flow is generated in the channel, owing to the streamline shape of helical screw insert,so that the enhanced performance is achieved at relatively low energy consumption. 展开更多

Computational Fluids Dynamics(CFD)simulations are essential for optimizing the design of a cockpit’s internal environment, but the complex geometric models consume a significant amount of computational resources and time.Arbitrary simplification of geometric models may result in inaccurate calculations of physical fields. To address this issue, this study establishes a geometric model simplification strategy and successfully applies it to a cockpit. The implementation of the whole approach is divided into three steps, summarized in three methods, namely Sensitivity Analysis Method(SAM),Detail Suppression Method(DSM),and Evaluation Standards Method(ESM).Sensitivity analysis of the detailed features of the geometric model is performed using the adjoint method. The details of the geometric model are suppressed based on the principle of curvature continuity. After evaluation, the suppression degrees of detailed features with different sensitivity levels are obtained. The results demonstrate that this strategy can be employed to achieve precise simplification standards, thereby avoiding excessive deviations caused by arbitrary simplification and reducing the significant costs associated with trial-and-error simplification. 展开更多

Powered by advanced information technology, more and more complex systems are exhibiting characteristics of the cyber-physical-social systems(CPSS).In this context, computational experiments method has emerged as a novel approach for the design, analysis, management, control, and integration of CPSS,which can realize the causal analysis of complex systems by means of“algorithmization”of“counterfactuals”.However, because CPSS involve human and social factors(e.g.,autonomy,initiative,and sociality),it is difficult for traditional design of experiment(DOE)methods to achieve the generative explanation of system emergence. To address this challenge, this paper proposes an integrated approach to the design of computational experiments, incorporating three key modules:1)Descriptive module:Determining the influencing factors and response variables of the system by means of the modeling of an artificial society;2)Interpretative module:Selecting factorial experimental design solution to identify the relationship between influencing factors and macro phenomena;3)Predictive module:Building a meta-model that is equivalent to artificial society to explore its operating laws. Finally,a case study of crowd-sourcing platforms is presented to illustrate the application process and effectiveness of the proposed approach, which can reveal the social impact of algorithmic behavior on“rider race”. 展开更多

A simple hydrodynamic model based on two-fluid theory, taking into account the effect of discrete particles on both the gas- and solid-phase momentum equations, was used to numerically investigate the pressure fluctuation characteristics in a gas-solid fluidized bed with the aid of CFX 4.4, a commercial CFD software package, by adding user-defined Fortran subroutines. Numerical simulations together with typical experimental measurements show that pressure fluctuations originate above the distributor when a gas pulse is injected into the fluidized bed. The pressure above the bubble gradually increases due to the presence of a rising bubble. When the bubble passes through the bed surface, the pressure near the bed surface gradually decreases to a lower value. Moreover, the pressure signals in the bubbling fluidized beds show obviously periodic characteristics. The major frequency of pressure fluctuations at the same vertical position is affected slightly by the operating gas velocity, and the amplitude of pressure fluctuations is related to both the operating gas velocity and the vertical height. In this study, the influence of the operating gas velocity on the pressure wave propagation velocity can be ignored, and only two peak frequencies in the power spectrum of the pressure fluctuations are observed which are associated with the bubble formation above the distributor and its eruption at the bed surface. 展开更多

Fishing boats are usually anchored side by side in the harbor because of the small structural size and poor resistance to wind and waves.A series of physical model experiments are conducted to investigate the motion characteristics of multiple fishing boats that are moored together.A decay test in calm water is conducted to study the natural period and damping coefficients.Regular wave experiments are performed to analyze the roll motion response of each boat for four modes(different numbers of boats side-by-side).The results indicate that the“natural period”of each boat for the mode of multi-boats especially three or four boats,is slightly smaller than that of a single boat, whereas the damping coefficient is visibly larger than that of a single boat. The maximum roll angle of each boat does not appear at the same time under a 90°incident wave.Small roll motion energy is generated at low frequencies and high frequencies when multiple boats are moored together. The energy decreases with the increasing wave period. The roll motion responses of each boat in four modes exhibit different trends with the increasing wave frequency. The number of boats and boat position have significant effects on roll motion. 展开更多

Accurate prediction of future rice yield needs the precise estimations of rice yield response to climate change factors,of which the most important one is the increasing carbon dioxide(CO_(2))concentrations.Estimates of CO_(2) fertilization effect(CFE)on rice, however, still had large uncertainties. Therefore, using the rice planting areas in East China as the study area,we firstly compared the rice yields and CFE predicted by four state-of-the-art crop models, and found that the CFE predicted by these models had significant differences. We then quantified the CFE on rice yield using the field-controlled experiment conducted at Danyang site at Jiangsu province.Using CFE measurements from a field experiment as benchmark,we have developed an experiment–model integration approach aiming to reduce this variation. This study thus highlights the large CFE uncertainties of current crop models and provides us with a method to reduce this uncertainty, which is beneficial for the accurate prediction of future global rice yield in the context of climate change. 展开更多

Small moving vehicles represent an important category of marine engineering tools and devices(equipment)typically used for ocean resource detection and maintenance of marine rights and interests. The lack of efficient power supply modes is one of the technical bottlenecks restricting the effective utilisation of this type of equipment. In this work, the performance characteristics of a new type of elastic-blade/wave-energy converter(EBWEC)and its core energy conversion component(named wave energy absorber)are comprehensively studied. In particular, computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations and experiments have been used to analyze the hydrodynamics and performance characteristics of the EBWEC.The pressure cloud diagrams relating to the surface of the elastic blade were obtained through two-way fluid-solid coupling simulations. The influence of blade thickness and relative speed on the performance characteristics of EBWEC was analyzed accordingly.A prototype of the EBWEC and its bucket test platform were also developed. The power characteristics of the EBWEC were analyzed and studied by using the blade thickness and motion cycle as control variables. The present research shows that the EBWEC can effectively overcome the performance disadvantages related to the transmission shaft torque load and power curve fluctuations of rigid blade wave energy converters(RBWEC). 展开更多

This paper presents effects of design factors on mechanical performance of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs), and an experimental investigation of optimal VAWT performance under low wind speed conditions in Thailand. Design factors include types of wind turbines, number of blades, types of materials, height-to-radius ratios, and design modifications. Potential VAWT models with different design factors are numerically analyzed within a virtual wind tunnel at various wind speeds by utilizing XflowTM?Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. The performance curves of each VAWT are obtained as plots of power coefficients against tip speed ratios. It is found that the type of wind turbine, number of blades, and height-to-radius ratio have significant effects on mechanical performance whereas types of materials result in shifts of operating speeds of VAWTs. Accordingly, an optimal VAWT prototype is developed to operate under actual low speed wind conditions. The performance curve from experimental results agrees with the CFD results. The proposed methodology can be used in the computer design of VAWTs to improve mechanical performance before physical fabrication. 展开更多
