A Brief Review of the Studies on Theories of Foreign Language Writing in China

The 1980s and the 1990s witnessed a slow development of studies on the theories of foreign language writing, English writing namely, in China. At the beginning of 21st century, the development takes a great step forward with more relevant articles published in all kinds of magazines. This review focuses on the articles published in the most important periodicals of foreign language teaching and research since the 1980s. In order to get an over-all understanding of the theories, the author classifies them into two aspects basic theories of foreign language writing and theories of teaching foreign language writing.

On the Application of Theme-Rheme Theory in College English Writing

Writing is one of the four basic skills students are required to master in foreign language studies,and an important way of language output.However,the teaching of English writing in college is deficient.In the English writings of college students,the lack of structural cohesion and semantic coherence is common.The theme-rheme theory is about discourse cohesion.Proper use of themes and thematic progession patterns qualifies cohesion and clear thoughts of a discourse and the variety of sentence patterns.Therefore,the theme-rheme theory plays an important role in writing teaching.

The Application of Noticing Theory to English Writing Teaching and Learning in China

"Noticing"is emphasized for its great influence on second language learning. Based on the previous related studies,this paper attempts to apply noticing theory to English writing teaching and learning in China by means of the enlargement of input,the implement of output-oriented activities and the focus on feedback.

The Application Study on Genre-based Approach in the English Exposition Writing Teaching for Professional College English Major Students

The previous studies show that the major problems faced by the students in writing can be classified into two categories, that is, they don't know"what to write"and"how to write". The researchers found that the specific problems existing in their writings are identified as poor content, incomplete generic structure and misuse of cohesive devices. Therefore, on the basis of the previous studies, this study attempts to use Martin's genre theory to resolve the existed problems of the Professional College English major's students in writing and enhance students' discourse writing ability. Meanwhile, this study tries to answer the following questions:(1) Compared with the traditional writing teaching methods, whether the genre-based writing method has a significant effect to improve students' writing skills;(2) Whether the genre-based writing method is possible to increase students' interest in writing. The experimental result and the questionnaire show that genre-based approach in ESL writing teaching really can improve students' writing achievement and enhance students' interest in English writing.

Research on the Writing Textbooks for English Majors at Polytechnics

Textbooks, as one of the important elements for the teaching effects and students' training aim and quality are the main carri-er and means for the realization of teaching objectives. The paper analyzes the problems of currently-used textbooks at the followingthree aspects, textbook users, compiling styles and contents, based on 31 popular English writing textbooks used at Polytechnics as re-search subjects. Aiming to improve textbook quality and English teaching reform at Polytechnics, the paper also puts forward the ideasof compiling English writing textbooks on the basis of Feuerstein's theory.

An Integrated Model of Teaching Theory and Action Research in POA-based Textbook Writing

Teaching theories provide important guidance for language teaching materials development,but there is little research on how textbook writers apply teaching theories in the actual writing process.This study analyzes the process of compiling iEnglish,a series of textbooks based on the Production-Oriented Approach(POA)and proposes an Integrated Model of Teaching Theory and Action Research for textbook writing.By elaborating the roles of teaching theory and action research at different stages of textbook writing and the interaction between theory and practice during the process,the study concludes that the Integrated Model can promote both textbook improvement and theory refinement.

An Analysis of the Causal Reasoning Deficiencies in English Majors' Argumentative Writing

The Syllabus for English Majors at Universities and Colleges(2000) makes it clear to further strengthen the English majors' critical thinking and logical reasoning ability.But how to effectively incorporate the cultivation of critical thinking skills into English majors' core courses,such as the writing courses,remains one of the most important tasks of teaching reform for English majors.The present study is aimed at having a systematic analysis on the causal reasoning deficiencies in English majors' argumentative writing.Furthermore,the reasons resulting in the causal reasoning deficiencies and the implications for the teaching of second language writing are explored.

The Benign Interaction among Literary Creation, Criticism and Theory from the Perspective of Bottom Writing： Taking ＂Tu Ziqiang＇s Personal Sorrow＂ as an Example

The heated conversations about Fang Fang＇s ＂Tu Ziqiang＇s Personal Sorrow＂ among the author, readers and critics are a typical example of the bottom literature which emerged in the 1990s. Starting with the controversies aroused by the novella, this paper discusses the relationships among literary creation, criticism and theory in the bottom writing. The problem of the social bottom is not only an economic or political problem, but also such a complicated cultural problem that has attracted increasing attention in the field of human science. As it were, around the problem of the bottom class, a new public field integrating different kinds of writing forms and various theoretical materials is formed. The Benign interaction among literary creation, criticism and theory will both benefit to the overall development of literature and provide resources for the theoretical construction.

An Analysis of Application of Register Theory in Teaching College English Writing

Halliday’s register theory is one of the important theories in the field of functional grammar.Halliday believed that register is a“functional variant of language”,a form of language change resulting from the change of situational context.Register consists of three parts:field,tenor,and mode.Register theory has been proved to be tremendously useful in English teaching and learning.This paper aims to briefly introduce the application of register theory in teaching college English writing.

A Rhetorical Structure Theory Based Approach to the Erroneous Rhetorical Relations in Chinese EFL Learners' Argumentative Writing

Based on Rhetorical Structure Theory,this study intends to investigate into the erroneous rhetorical relations in Chinese EFL learners 'argumentative writing and their relationship with writing quality.Research findings show that students have problems in handling textual coherence in form and function.However,comparisons of the erroneous rhetorical relations both at the intra-paragraph and at the inter-paragraph level indicate statistical differences between the two groups.

Survey Research into Cohesive Device Misuses in Business English Writing

Cohesive devices in students’business English writing are regarded as the object of the research.Based on Haliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory,this paper introduces commonly-used cohesive devices in English writing.With the method of quantitative data,use and misuse frequency of cohesive devices in students’writings can be known.The paper will also analyze why misuses happen through qualitative data analysis and explore right ways of using cohesive devices.

Contesting Veterans＇ Identities＂ Reflections Upon Gender Roles and History in Pat Barker＇s Regeneration

This paper aims to reflect upon the approximations between literature and history in Pat Barker＇s novel Regeneration （1991）. The novel fictionalizes the conversations held by three war veterans who wrote and fought in the First World War （Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Robert Graves） during their stay at Craiglockart＇s Hospital--a war hospital for the treatment of shell-shocked officers, in Scotland. The paper addresses more emphatically how traditional male and female roles are renegotiated in Barker＇s metafiction. Finally, it provides some considerations on British women war writing of the First World War, a tradition in which Regeneration is rooted and emerges as a remarkable contemporary example.

A Reflection on a Teaching Practice

The present paper is a reflection on a teaching practice which employed second language acquisition(SLA) theories and teaching methodologies. The students taught were second-year non-English majors from X university and the course book used was New Horizon College English: Reading and Writing(3 rd edition). SLA theories involved include Input Hypothesis, Noticing Hypothesis and Comprehensible Output Hypothesis; teaching methodologies applied include Grammar-Translation Method,Communicative Language Teaching and Task Based Language Teaching(TBLT). After a semester-long teaching practice, the present reflection was completed after a deep discussion with the teacher. Students description, teaching process, and merits and demerits of this practice were illustrated.

The Feasibility of Applying SFL to English Writing Class in China

There are quite a few students in China are incompetent to organize text in a cohesive and coherent way in English writ-ing. This essay gives a general introduction of systemic functional linguistics theory, aiming at emphasizing the feasibility of apply-ing SFL as a tool to improve the English writing proficiency of students in China.

文章文法视野下义例、史法、义法之辨析

学者们往往将方苞所谓文章义法等同于经学义例、书法或史法,此观点值得商榷。义例、史法对文章文法的发展都有不同程度的影响,它们都重视大义的书写,也影响到义法说对文章大义指向的重视以及将义与法密切关联的主张。不过,经学大义或史学大义在某种程度上是学者共同认可或遵守的价值观念,而文章大义则往往体现作家个人的学养、精神等等。义例、史法、文章义法也都关注文章写作之“法”,都会考虑书与不书或材料的取舍等问题,但在“法”的内涵和指向上又有明显区别。经学家对书法的分析主要体现在文章字句上,即所谓“一字褒贬”,史法的根本在于对体例的把握;《史通》开启了叙事文法的总结,明人以此为基础,通过《左传》《史记》等的评点使叙事的篇章之法得到充分认识和发展;方苞义法说的提出又以明人为基础,简化明代以来层出不穷的炫目、奇妙之法,主张法的运用随义而变化,更关注最基本的篇章法则,确立了清代文章学的基本走向。

中国写作理论元范畴“辞”论纲

“辞”是“司”的后起分化字。西周青铜铭文中“辞”与法律诉讼有关,本义为“讼辞”。东周“辞”引申出普通言辞的意义,孔子提出“修辞”概念,诸子共同建构了修辞伦理、修辞技艺和文体三位一体的修辞学说。修辞学术以语言为中心探索了怎样思考、如何表达的问题,具有很强的工具性。“辞”成为一个跨界语言学、逻辑学、修辞学、文体学的重要范畴,被提升到理论层面予以反思和研究。这是中国写作理论元范畴“关键的一跳”。秦汉以来“言文分离”,随着诗文书写日益发展,表意单位为篇章且基于书面文辞的“辞章”概念产生。先秦修辞学演化为汉魏六朝辞章学,后者追求作品的辞藻、辞趣,偏向语言风格旨趣,窄化了写作学范围。如何赓续传统,继往开来,推进全球视域下21世纪中国写作学术的繁荣与发展,由“辞”进入,当能另辟蹊径。

“表达驱动”教学理论赋能国际中文读写教材编写实践——以《立体中国·国际中文读写课本》为例

教学理论对于教材研发具有重要指导意义。“表达驱动”教学理论的产生经历了酝酿、探索与实践三个阶段,具有深厚的理论实践基础,适用于国际中文读写教材的编写。教材单元体例设计包含四个模块八个构件:表达需求驱动、表达过程调节(表达初体验、阅读输入、沉浸体验、互动协商、体验调节)、表达输出和表达评价。国际中文教育读写教材编写要注重读写主题的相关性与真实性;读写技能的互促性与系统性;习题设置的层次性与实践性。

论扬雄儒者身份认同下的辞赋书写与赋论成就

特定的时代背景、思想环境和个人经历造成了扬雄对儒家思想的接受,他推崇儒家代表人物孔孟,认同儒家观念和儒家经典,同时捍卫孔子儒学思想纯洁性,以一名儒者的身份自居。在儒者身份的自我认同下,赋家扬雄在辞赋书写与赋论成就方面表现出浓厚的儒家色彩。赋作方面,在儒家经世思想影响下,扬雄辞赋创作体现出以赋入仕、以赋纳谏的目的;同时继承儒家美刺传统,采用修饰文辞、婉转达意的创作方法;将儒家明哲保身、重视民生的观念纳入创作内容;晚年又因赋不能“用”而“悔赋”。赋论方面,在儒家重文观、中庸观、诗怨观的影响下,扬雄最早认识到了赋文体“丽”的审美本质,率先将“则”作为辞赋的分类标准,创新建构了赋文体“讽谏”的实际功能,在中国赋论史上具有重要的地位。
