The relationship between rear-end crash occurrences and traffic conditions were explored using...This study develops new real-time freeway rear-end crash potential predictors using support vector machine(SVM) technique. The relationship between rear-end crash occurrences and traffic conditions were explored using historical loop detector data from Interstate-894 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The extracted loop detection data were aggregated over different stations and time intervals to produce explanatory features. A feature selection process, which addresses the interaction between SVM classifiers and explanatory features, was adopted to identify the features that significantly influence rear-end crashes. Afterwards, the identified significant explanatory features over three separate time levels were used to train three SVM models. In the end, the multi-layer perceptron(MLP) artificial neural network models were used as benchmarks to evaluate the performance of SVM models. The results show that the proposed feature selection procedure greatly enhances the accuracy and generalization capability of SVM models. Moreover, the optimal SVM classifier achieves 81.1% overall prediction precision rate. In comparison with MLP artificial neural networks, SVM models provide better results in terms of crash prediction accuracy and false positive rate, which confirms the superior performance of SVM technique in rear-end crash potential prediction analysis.展开更多

The integration of simulation model system, decision analysis and expert system for decision support in the system implementation was reviewed. The intent of the paper is to provide insight as to how system capability and acceptability can be enhanced by this integration. A robust network condition classification algorithm using multiple end-to-end metrics and Support Vector Machine (SVM) is proposed to classify different network events and model the transition pattern of network conditions. End-to-end Quality-of-Service (QoS) mechanisms like congestion control, error control, and power control can benefit from the network condition information and react to different network situations appropriately. The proposed network condition classifica- tion algorithm uses SVM as a classifier to cluster different end-to-end metrics such as end-to-end delay, delay jitter, throughput and packet loss-rate for the UDP traffic with TCP-friendly Rate Control (TFRC), which is used for video transport. The algorithm is also flexible for classifying different numbers of states representing different levels of network events such as wireline congestion and wireless channel loss. Simulation results using network simulator 2 (ns2) showed the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.展开更多

We report our experience with standardized management protocols and the application of ...Introduction: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is used in selected patient with cardiogenic and/or re- spiratory shock. We report our experience with standardized management protocols and the application of the Qua- droxD oxygenator with a centrifugal pump to maximize end-organ recovery and improve survival. Methods: This is an Internal Review Board (IRB) approved, single institution retrospective study of end-organ recovery and survival in pa- tients who required ECMO for cardiogenic and/or respiratory shock between July 2010 and June 2011. Results: Sixteen patients (median age: 46 years) were initiated on either Veno-Arterial (VA) or Veno-Venous (VV) ECMO. Cardiogenic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and a combined respiratory and cardiogenic compromise were the primary indications for ECMO in 8 (50%), 5 (31%) and 3 (19%) patients respectively. The median time on ECMO was 8 days (range: 4 - 26 days). Twelve patients (75%) were successfully weaned off ECMO, of which four (25%) were bridged to a ventricular assist device (VAD) and eight (50%) were weaned to recovery. All eight patients (100%) that were weaned to recovery and two patients (50%) that were bridged to a VAD were successfully discharged from the hospital, resulting in a discharge rate of 63%. There was an improvement in pre- vs. post-ECMO AST (449 IU/L vs. 63 IU/L, p Conclusion: ECMO using the QuadroxD oxygenator and a centrifugal pump, coupled with standardized management protocols is beneficial in carefully selected patients.
