Planetary gear train is a critical transmission component in large equipment such as helicopters and wind turbines. Conducting damage perception of planetary gear trains is of great significance for the safe operation of equipment. Existing methods for damage perception of planetary gear trains mainly rely on linear vibration analysis. However, these methods based on linear vibration signal analysis face challenges such as rich vibration sources, complex signal coupling and modulation mechanisms, significant influence of transmission paths, and difficulties in separating damage information. This paper proposes a method for separating instantaneous angular speed (IAS) signals for planetary gear fault diagnosis. Firstly, this method obtains encoder pulse signals through a built-in encoder. Based on this, it calculates the IAS signals using the Hilbert transform, and obtains the time-domain synchronous average signal of the IAS of the planetary gear through time-domain synchronous averaging technology, thus realizing the fault diagnosis of the planetary gear train. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the calculated IAS signals, demonstrating that the time-domain synchronous averaging technology can highlight impact characteristics, effectively separate and extract fault impacts, greatly reduce the testing cost of experiments, and provide an effective tool for the fault diagnosis of planetary gear trains. 展开更多

Deep learning(DL) is progressively popular as a viable alternative to traditional signal processing(SP) based methods for fault diagnosis. However, the lack of explainability makes DL-based fault diagnosis methods difficult to be trusted and understood by industrial users. In addition, the extraction of weak fault features from signals with heavy noise is imperative in industrial applications. To address these limitations, inspired by the Filterbank-Feature-Decision methodology, we propose a new Signal Processing Informed Neural Network(SPINN) framework by embedding SP knowledge into the DL model. As one of the practical implementations for SPINN, a denoising fault-aware wavelet network(DFAWNet) is developed, which consists of fused wavelet convolution(FWConv), dynamic hard thresholding(DHT),index-based soft filtering(ISF), and a classifier. Taking advantage of wavelet transform, FWConv extracts multiscale features while learning wavelet scales and selecting important wavelet bases automatically;DHT dynamically eliminates noise-related components via point-wise hard thresholding;inspired by index-based filtering, ISF optimizes and selects optimal filters for diagnostic feature extraction. It’s worth noting that SPINN may be readily applied to different deep learning networks by simply adding filterbank and feature modules in front. Experiments results demonstrate a significant diagnostic performance improvement over other explainable or denoising deep learning networks. Compound fault,as a primary failure leading to unexpected downtime of rotating machinery, dramatically increases the difficulty in fault diagnosis. To deal with the difficulty encountered in implementing compound fault diagnosis(CFD),researchers and engineers from industry and academia have made numerous significant breakthroughs in recent years.Admittedly, many systematic surveys focused on fault diagnosis have been conducted by reputable researchers.Nevertheless, previous review articles paid more attention to fault diagnosis with several single or independent faults, resulting in that there is still lacking a comprehensive survey on CFD.Therefore,to fulfill the above requirements,it is necessary to provide an in-depth overview of fault diagnosis methods or algorithms for compound faults of rotating machinery and uncover potential challenges or opportunities that would guide and inspire readers to devote their efforts to promoting fault diagnosis technology more effective and practical.Specifically, the backgrounds, including the related definitions and a new taxonomy of CFD methods, are detailed according to the way of implementing compound fault recognition. Then, the stateof-the-art applications of CFD are overviewed based on relevant publications in the past decades. Finally, the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing CFD are concluded and followed by a conclusion for ending this survey. We believe that this review article can provide a systematic guideline of CFD from different aspects for potential readers and seasoned researchers. 展开更多

When used for separating multi-component non-stationary signals, the adaptive time-varying filter(ATF) based on multi-scale chirplet sparse signal decomposition(MCSSD) generates phase shift and signal distortion. To overcome this drawback, the zero phase filter is introduced to the mentioned filter, and a fault diagnosis method for speed-changing gearbox is proposed. Firstly, the gear meshing frequency of each gearbox is estimated by chirplet path pursuit. Then, according to the estimated gear meshing frequencies, an adaptive zero phase time-varying filter(AZPTF) is designed to filter the original signal. Finally, the basis for fault diagnosis is acquired by the envelope order analysis to the filtered signal. The signal consisting of two time-varying amplitude modulation and frequency modulation(AM-FM) signals is respectively analyzed by ATF and AZPTF based on MCSSD. The simulation results show the variances between the original signals and the filtered signals yielded by AZPTF based on MCSSD are 13.67 and 41.14, which are far less than variances (323.45 and 482.86) between the original signals and the filtered signals obtained by ATF based on MCSSD. The experiment results on the vibration signals of gearboxes indicate that the vibration signals of the two speed-changing gearboxes installed on one foundation bed can be separated by AZPTF effectively. Based on the demodulation information of the vibration signal of each gearbox, the fault diagnosis can be implemented. Both simulation and experiment examples prove that the proposed filter can extract a mono-component time-varying AM-FM signal from the multi-component time-varying AM-FM signal without distortion. 展开更多

It is a challenging issue to detect bearing fault under nonstationary conditions and gear noise interferences. Meanwhile, the application of the traditional methods is limited by their deficiencies in the aspect of computational accuracy and e ciency, or dependence on the tachometer. Hence, a new fault diagnosis strategy is proposed to remove gear interferences and spectrum smearing phenomenon without the tachometer and angular resampling technique. In this method, the instantaneous dominant meshing multiple(IDMM) is firstly extracted from the time-frequency representation(TFR) of the raw signal, which can be used to calculate the phase functions(PF) and the frequency points(FP). Next, the resonance frequency band excited by the faulty bearing is obtained by the band-pass filter. Furthermore, based on the PFs, the generalized demodulation transform(GDT) is applied to the envelope of the filtered signal. Finally, the target bearing is diagnosed by matching the peaks in the spectra of demodulated signals with the theoretical FPs. The analysis results of simulated and experimental signal demonstrate that the proposed method is an e ective and reliable tool for bearing fault diagnosis without the tachometer and the angular resampling. 展开更多

When operating speed or load is changed, or mechanical faults appear in machinery, many dynamic signals coming from running machinery are nonstationary. It is difficult to analyse these kind of signals. Timefrequency(scale) analysis methods of WignerVille distribution (WVD), short time Fourier transform (STFT), and wavelet transform (WT) provide powerful new tools to analyse and diagnose nonstationary signals of machinery. This paper adopts these new methods to analyse vibration signals of a metallurgical rolling mill and a mining electric excavator, and to diagnose their operating conditions and mechanical faults. Mechanical shock, friction, wear and additive impulse are revealed successfully from nonstationary operating conditions. 展开更多

Renewable energy sources are considered much in energy fields because of thecontemporary energy calamities. Among the important alternatives being considered, windenergy is a durable competitor because of its dependability due to the development of theinnovations, comparative cost effectiveness and great framework. To yield wind energymore proficiently, the structure of wind turbines has turned out to be substantially bigger, creating conservation and renovation works troublesome. Due to various ecologicalconditions, wind turbine blades are subjected to vibration and it leads to failure. If thefailure is not diagnosed early, it will lead to catastrophic damage to the framework. In orderto increase safety observations, to reduce down time, to bring down the recurrence ofunexpected breakdowns and related enormous maintenance, logistic expenditures and tocontribute steady power generation, the wind turbine blade must be monitored now andthen to assure that they are in good condition. In this paper, a three bladed wind turbinewas preferred and using vibration source, the condition of a wind turbine blade is examined. The faults like blade crack, erosion, hub-blade loose connection, pitch angle twist and bladebend faults were considered and these faults are classified using Bayes Net (BN),Discriminative Multinomial Naïve Bayes (DMNB), Naïve Bayes (NB), Simple NaïveBayes (SNB), and Updateable Naïve Bayes (UNB) classifiers. These classifiers arecompared and better classifier is suggested for condition monitoring of wind turbine blades. 展开更多

The performance of traditional vibration based fault diagnosis methods greatly depends on those hand- crafted features extracted using signal processing algo- rithms, which require significant amounts of domain knowledge and human labor, and do not generalize well to new diagnosis domains. Recently, unsupervised represen- tation learning provides an alternative promising solution to feature extraction in traditional fault diagnosis due to its superior learning ability from unlabeled data. Given that vibration signals usually contain multiple temporal struc- tures, this paper proposes a multiscale representation learning (MSRL) framework to learn useful features directly from raw vibration signals, with the aim to capture rich and complementary fault pattern information at dif- ferent scales. In our proposed approach, a coarse-grained procedure is first employed to obtain multiple scale signals from an original vibration signal. Then, sparse filtering, a newly developed unsupervised learning algorithm, is applied to automatically learn useful features from each scale signal, respectively, and then the learned features at each scale to be concatenated one by one to obtain multi- scale representations. Finally, the multiscale representa- tions are fed into a supervised classifier to achieve diagnosis results. Our proposed approach is evaluated using two different case studies: motor bearing and wind turbine gearbox fault diagnosis. Experimental results show that the proposed MSRL approach can take full advantages of the availability of unlabeled data to learn discriminative features and achieved better performance with higher accuracy and stability compared to the traditional approaches. 展开更多

The high accurate classification ability of an intelligent diagnosis method often needs a large amount of training samples with high-dimensional eigenvectors, however the characteristics of the signal need to be extracted accurately. Although the existing EMD(empirical mode decomposition) and EEMD(ensemble empirical mode decomposition) are suitable for processing non-stationary and non-linear signals, but when a short signal, such as a hydraulic impact signal, is concerned, their decomposition accuracy become very poor. An improve EEMD is proposed specifically for short hydraulic impact signals. The improvements of this new EEMD are mainly reflected in four aspects, including self-adaptive de-noising based on EEMD, signal extension based on SVM(support vector machine), extreme center fitting based on cubic spline interpolation, and pseudo component exclusion based on cross-correlation analysis. After the energy eigenvector is extracted from the result of the improved EEMD, the fault pattern recognition based on SVM with small amount of low-dimensional training samples is studied. At last, the diagnosis ability of improved EEMD+SVM method is compared with the EEMD+SVM and EMD+SVM methods, and its diagnosis accuracy is distinctly higher than the other two methods no matter the dimension of the eigenvectors are low or high. The improved EEMD is very propitious for the decomposition of short signal, such as hydraulic impact signal, and its combination with SVM has high ability for the diagnosis of hydraulic impact faults. 展开更多

Variational mode decomposition(VMD) has been proved to be useful for extraction of fault-induced transients of rolling bearings. Multi-bandwidth mode manifold(Triple M, TM) is one variation of the VMD, which units multiple fault-related modes with different bandwidths by a nonlinear manifold learning algorithm named local tangent space alignment(LTSA). The merit of the TM method is that the bearing fault-induced transients extracted contain low level of in-band noise without optimization of the VMD parameters. However, the determination of the neighborhood size of the LTSA is time-consuming, and the extracted fault-induced transients may have the problem of asymmetry in the up-and-down direction. This paper aims to improve the efficiency and waveform symmetry of the TM method.Specifically, the multi-bandwidth modes consisting of the fault-related modes with different bandwidths are first obtained by repeating the recycling VMD(RVMD) method with different bandwidth balance parameters. Then, the LTSA algorithm is performed on the multi-bandwidth modes to extract their inherent manifold structure, in which the natural nearest neighbor(Triple N, TN) algorithm is adopted to efficiently and reasonably select the neighbors of each data point in the multi-bandwidth modes. Finally, a weight-based feature compensation strategy is designed to synthesize the low-dimensional manifold features to alleviate the asymmetry problem, resulting in a symmetric TM feature that can represent the real fault transient components. The major contribution of the improved TM method for bearing fault diagnosis is that the pure fault-induced transients are extracted efficiently and are symmetrical as the real. One simulation analysis and two experimental applications in bearing fault diagnosis validate the enhanced performance of the improved TM method over the traditional methods. This research proposes a bearing fault diagnosis method which has the advantages of high efficiency, good waveform symmetry and enhanced in-band noise removal capability. 展开更多

According to the characteristics of gear fault vibration signals, a methodfor gear fault diagnosis based upon the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is proposed in thispaper. By using EMD, any complicated signal can be decomposed into a finite and often small numberof intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) , which are based upon the local characteristic time scale of thesignal. Thus, EMD is perfectly suitable for non-stationary signal processing and faultcharacteristics extracting. It is well known that a gear vibration signal consists of a number offrequency family components, each of which is a modulated signal. Thus, we can use EMD to decomposea gear fault vibration signal into a number of IMF components, some of which correspond to thefrequency families, and the others are noises. Therefore, the frequency families can be separatedand the noise can be decreased at the same time. The proposed method has been applied to gear faultdiagnosis. The results show that both the sensitivity and the reliability of this method aresatisfactory. 展开更多

Second-order multisynchrosqueezing transform(SMSST),an effective tool for the analysis of nonstationary signals, can significantly improve the time-frequency resolution of a nonstationary signal.Though the noise energy in the signal can also be enhanced in the transform which can largely affect the characteristic frequency component identification for an accurate fault diagnostic. An improved algorithm termed as an improved second-order multisynchrosqueezing transform(ISMSST)is then proposed in this study to alleviate the problem of noise interference in the analysis of nonstationary signals. In the study, the time-frequency(TF)distribution of a nonstationary signal is calculated first using SMSST,and then aδfunction is constructed based on a newly proposed time-frequency operator(TFO)which is then substituted back into SMSST to produce a noisefree time frequency result. The effectiveness of the technique is validated by comparing the TF results obtained using the proposed algorithm and those using other TFA techniques in the analysis of a simulated signal and an experimental data. The result shows that the current technique can render the most accurate TFA result within the TFA techniques employed in this study. 展开更多

In the motor fault diagnosis technique, vibration and stator current frequency components of detection are two main means. This article will discuss the signal detection method based on vibration fault. Because the motor vibration signal is a non-stationary random signal, fault signals often contain a lot of time-varying, burst proper- ties of ingredients. The traditional Fourier signal analysis can not effectively extract the motor fault characteristics, but are also likely to be rich in failure information but a weak signal as noise. In this paper, the well-known Duffing equation and the nonlinear equation describing vibration of the human eardrum are introduced from elastic nonlinear system theory. According to the fact that the human ear can distinguish weak sound with small difference, the idea that the Duffing oscillator can be used to detect a weak signal and diagnose early fault of machinery is proposed. In order to obtain a model for weak signal detection via the Duffing oscillator, the first step is to seek all forms of solutions of the Duffing equation. The second step is to study global bifurcations of the Duffing equation using qualitative analysis theory of a dynamic system. That is to say, a series of bifurcations thresholds of the Duffing equation can be analyzed by the Melnikov function and a subharmonics Melnikov function. Then the three types of bifurcations thresholds varying with damping and external exciting amplitude are discussed. The analysis concludes that the bifurcation threshold corresponding to the maximum orbit of solutions outside the homo-clinic orbit of the Duffing equation can be used to detect a weak signal. Finally, the implementing model of the Duffing oscillator for weak signal detection is given. 展开更多

To quickly and accurately identify faulty components based on the alarm information is critical for the fault diagnosis of power grids. To address this chal-lenge,this paper proposes a novel fault diagnosis method based on temporal tissue-like P system(TTPS).In the proposed method, suspected faulty components are iden-tifiedfirst via a network topology analysis method. An TTPS-based fault diagnosis model is then built for each suspected faulty component to perform fault reasoning,so as to accurately detect the faulty components. To take full advantage of the action signals and temporal information of protection devices,TTPS and its forward temporal reasoning algorithm are proposed.TTPS can synchro-nously model the action and temporal logics of protection devices in an intuitive and graphical way, while the rea-soning algorithm can process the fault alarm information in parallel. To demonstrate the effectiveness and superi-ority of the proposed method, simulations are carried out on the IEEE 14-bus and 118-bus systems, while the results are compared to other two widely adopted methods.Index Terms—Alarm signal, fault diagnosis, membrane computing, power system,tissue-like P system. 展开更多
