The renowned translator Yang Yi passed away in 2023.Many scholars argue that, influenced by their biological gender, female translators often employ translation methods in adherence to feminist translation or reflect characteristics typical of female translators. This study examines the translation of Wuthering Heights by Yang Yi,focusing on whether there is a definite influence of gender on translator behavior. While existing literature primarily analyzes Yang Yi’s work through a feminist lens, this research takes a broader approach.By considering the translator’s social background and translation practice, this paper challenges the assumption that her work strictly aligns with feminist translation theories.Instead, this study emphasizes the importance of considering diverse factors when interpreting translated works, moving beyond a singular gender-based standpoint. 展开更多

Since 2023,the slogan“Question Korean women, understand Korean women, learn Korean women”has become popular in Chinese social networks.Previously,Chinese netizens have not paid such attention to women from other countries. In response to this phenomenon, this paper combines neoliberal feminist theories with thematic analysis to obtain a total of 80 valid samples from the Douyin platform to analyze the image of Korean women disseminated on the Douyin platform. Finally,it is concluded that the image of Korean women’s strict self-discipline,internal and external cultivation, sobriety of thought, and the spirit of courageous struggle have to a certain extent promoted the awakening of self-consciousness of female netizens in China;on the other hand,it is also necessary to realize that the image of Korean women disseminated in Douyin is not completely true, and it is also necessary to be alert to the phenomenon that the gender dichotomy has been reduced to the attraction of network traffic and capital as a sharp weapon. 展开更多

The participation of women in legislation is an important aspect and means of safeguarding women’s rights.Feminist theory, based on criticism of both the“citizenship identity theory as rights”and the“citizenship identity theory as responsibilities,”proposes the“citizenship identity theory as subjectivity.”Observing the current practice of women’s participation in legislation in China, two institutional safeguard principles can be summarized:the“minimum proportion”and the“influence evaluation.”However, each of these principles has its inherent limitations. Therefore,it is necessary to supplement them with the principle of“subjective participation”in a reflective manner. This principle requires women to participate substantively in the legislative process as subjects, express women’s needs and demands, input women’s perspectives and experiences, and reconstruct the distribution of rights and responsibilities in the existing legislation. The three principles complement each other and work together to comprehensively constitute the institutional structure of women’s participation in legislation, thereby promoting the reproduction of corresponding action structures. 展开更多

The content of current third-wave feminism differs significantly from that of previous feminist movements, which sought equal human and civil rights for women. In third-wave feminism, gender is primarily understood as a social category that is linguistically constructed. The now classic work Gender Trouble(1990)by philosopher Judith Butler is decisive for this“linguistic turn”in the social sciences. However,Butler’s work is systematically based on two philosophical traditions that are already highly controversial in themselves:sophism and existentialism, linked to a pre-modern magical worldview. The following essay is a critique of these lines of tradition, followed by the question of the extent to which they can serve citizens of an enlightened society in naming and constructively addressing actual social grievances. 展开更多

The Easter Parade is a masterpiece by Richard Yates, which was published in 1976.The image of Emily, the heroine of the book, can be regarded as an iconic figure of early feminists in America. The aim of this paper is to explore Richard Yates’view of feminism, through analyzing the image of Emily in the book, and to understand the pursuits and dilemmas of feminists.Emily,as a woman in patriarchal society, who has always struggled independently on her own and fights against her fate, ends up in failure.Sarah,a typical image of“the other”who is dependent on men, eventually dies a tragic death. In front of the cruel and unpredictable fate, whether women have the sense of resistance or not,it seems that life always points to tragedy.Emily’s path of awakening is accompanied by real-life dilemmas, which is the epitome of every feminist’s experience. 展开更多

The study explores Feminism by focusing broadly on its history and further examining using Marxism and critical discourses by other feminists.Feminism refers to the idea that women and men ought to have equal rights. In 1734,the Swedish Civil Code gave women more rights, most notably prohibiting husbands from selling their wives’possessions without their approval. In her 1790 essay“On the equality of the sexes,”American women’s rights campaigner Judith Sargent Murray claimed that women are just as bright as men.British author Mary Wollstonecraft responded to philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau and other 18th-century Enlightenment intellectuals who did not extend their concepts of freedom to women in her 1792 book A Vindication of the Rights of Women. She challenges the idea that women are less logical than males and opposes the injustice.“Who made man the exclusive judge?”she demands. However,Frenchman Charles Fourier coined the term“feminisme”in 1837,marking the beginning of the concept of feminism. The Victorian Social Convention exalted and imposed the domestic roles of wife and mother on most married middle-class women in 19th-century Britain.Career aspirations were restricted because they were not allowed to receive an education on par with that of males. In The Communist Manifesto,German philosophers and revolutionary political theorists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels contend that a bourgeois man regards his wife as nothing more than an apparatus of production.According to Engles, the family is at the core of the violence and oppression that women experience.Marxist feminists saw capitalism and patriarchy as the two fundamental systems that supported the subjugation of women. The British writer and social theorist Harriet Taylor Mill underlined that a lady who could support the family financially and had a good education would be respected by her husband and treated as a partner. However, men utilize rape as a means of controlling women,as seen by the social inequities that still affect women today. It’s shocking to learn that rape was a taboo topic until 1975 when Susan Brownmiller authored Against Our Will:Men,Women, and Rape. There was a notion that said women’s sexuality encourages rape, hence the guilt was frequently placed on the female victims.Nonetheless, postcolonial feminists such as Chandra Talpade Mohanty contend that regardless of their status as powerful or marginal, wealthy or not, women residing in non-Western nations are presumed to be impoverished, uninformed, uneducated, sexually restricted,tradition-bound,and victims.FGM(female genital cutting)has been a custom for at least 2,500 years, still practiced in thirty countries, mostly in Africa,Indonesia, and the Middle East.It is not connected to chastity and purity, guaranteeing that women remain virgins until marriage and remain faithful afterward. In this essay,Finally,I have looked at how women have faced discrimination in a variety of settings, including the home and the workplace, for millennia due to their gender. 展开更多

A Room of One’s Own is a masterpiece by Virginia Woolf, which describes her understanding of literary creation and the issue of women and fiction. The content of this book is based on Woolf’s two speeches at Cambridge, with the theme of “Women and fiction.” Through the analysis of the history and current situation of female literary creation, the paper points out that women should have the courage and right to fight for independent economic power and social status. “Oxbridge” is a combined term of Oxford and Cambridge, and Oxbridge pictures dominate the first chapter of A Room of One’s Own, which are the focus of this paper. Through a detailed analysis of the different indoor and outdoor pictures of Oxbridge, including nature, landscape, humanistic architecture and the “pictures” imagined in the narrator’s mind, this paper discusses the existence of Victorian women and Woolf’s feminist thoughts so as to provide possible implications for the social survival of contemporary women. The study is also concerned with Woolf’s Eco-feminism, stream of consciousness and other artistic skills. 展开更多

William Shakespeare is the most well-known playwright in the world. The Merchant of Venice is one of the four great comedies by William Shakespeare. It is set during the Elizabethan period with rapid economic development and wide spread Renaissance humanism.Kindness and love are the main themes of the play.Against the backdrop of the spirit of humanism, the female characters in the play have preliminary feminist spirit and subject consciousness though there are some limitations. This article analyzes the feminist spirit in the play and women’s progress on their road of liberation. It suggests that while reflecting the initial emancipation of women in the West in the 16th century, the play also reveals the reality of the enormous social barriers on the road of women’s emancipation. The emancipation of women is an enduring topic in the development of society and a goal that people all over the world are still striving for. 展开更多

This article delves into the intricate landscape of gender roles within China, employing a historical lens to dissect the evolution of these roles throughout key periods of Chinese societal transformation. The study centres on three pivotal epochs in contemporary China:the pre-liberation era(prior to 1949),the era of socialist construction(1949-1978),and the phase of economic reform(post-1978).Despite the undeniably persistent underpinning of traditional gender roles throughout history, this analysis offers insight into the essence of feminist movements-an ongoing struggle against the subjugation of women. While notable strides have been made in enhancing the status and rights of women in recent decades,it becomes evident that achieving genuine gender equality necessitates a more nuanced approach beyond the mere expansion of educational and occupational opportunities for women.True transformation mandates heightened awareness of gender inequality across all societal domains, catalysing collective participation in social initiatives by both genders. This article underscores the imperative of multifaceted engagement to drive meaningful and lasting shifts in gender dynamics. 展开更多
