Displacement control algorithms commonly used to evaluate axial force-bending moment(PM)diagrams may lead to incorrect interpretations of the strength envelopes for asymmetric sections. This paper aims to offer valuable insights by comparing existing displacement control algorithms with a newly proposed force control algorithm. The main focus is on the PM diagrams of three example sections that exhibit varying degrees of asymmetry. The comparative study indicates that conventional displacement control algorithms inevitably introduce non-zero out-of-plane bending moments. The reported PM diagram in such cases erroneously neglects the out-of-plane moment and fails to represent the strength envelope accurately. This oversight results in significant and unconservative errors when verifying the strength of asymmetric sections. 展开更多

It is widely recognized that nonlinear time-history analysis constitutes the most accurate way to simulate the response of structures subjected to strong levels of seismic excitation. This analytical method is based on sound underlying principles and has the capability to reproduce the intrinsic inelastic dynamic behavior of structures. Nonetheless, comparisons with experimental results from large-scale testing of structures are still needed, in order to ensure adequate levels of confidence in this numerical methodology. The fiber modelling approach employed in the current endeavor inherently accounts for geometric nonlinearities and material inelasticity, without a need for calibration of plastic hinges mechanisms, typical in concentrated plasticity models. The resulting combination of analysis accuracy and modelling simplicity, allows thus to overcome the perhaps not fully justifiable sense of complexity associated to nonlinear dynamic analysis. The fiber-based modelling approach is employed in the framework of a finite element program downloaded from the Intemet for seismic response analysis of framed structures. The reliability and accuracy of the program are demonstrated by numerically reproducing pseudo-dynamic tests on a four span continuous deck concrete bridge. Modelling assumptions are discussed, together with their implications on numerical results of the nonlinear time-history analyses, which were found to be in good agreement with experimental results. 展开更多

To get fiber motion in condensing zone of compact spinning, velocity of this area is achieved by simulation, and then a bead-elastic rod fiber model is established.Based on simulation and dynamic analysis on this zone, governing equations are constructed and Runge-Kutta approach is used.Lastly, trajectories of fibers are calculated by specially designed Matlab procedure according to the principles mentioned above. Results show that fiber motions at different initial positions are different;X-axis velocity component makes fibers gathering on sides of suction slot;Y-axis airflow gets fibers gradually close and then stick to the surface of lattice apron.Fiber motions also reflect that the compact spinning process in condensing zone can be divided into three parts:fast convergence zone, adjustment convergence zone, and steady convergence zone. 展开更多

A quantum chain model of multiple molecule motors is proposed as a mathematical physics theory for the microscopic modeling of classical force-velocity relation and tension transients in muscle fibers. The proposed model was a quantum many-particle Hamiltonian to predict the force-velocity relation for the slow release of muscle fibers, which has not yet been empirically defined and was much more complicated than the hyperbolic relationships. Using the same Hamiltonian model, a mathematical force-velocity relationship was proposed to explain the tension observed when the muscle was stimulated with an alternative electric current. The discrepancy between input electric frequency and the muscle oscillation frequency could be explained physically by the Doppler effect in this quantum chain model. Further more, quantum physics phenomena were applied to explore the tension time course of cardiac muscle and insect flight muscle. Most of the experimental tension transient curves were found to correspond to the theoretical output of quantum two- and three-level models. Mathematical modeling electric stimulus as photons exciting a quantum three-level particle reproduced most of the tension transient curves of water bug Lethocerus maximus. 展开更多

In this study,an experimental study and numerical calculations using fiber model were conducted for four high-strength concrete shear walls with boundary columns under low cyclic load. The boundary column and shear wall were divided into fiber elements, and PERFORM-3D finite element analysis software was used to carry out push-over analysis on the test specimens. The results show that the finite element analysis results were in good agreement with the experimental results. The proposed analysis method could perform elasto-plastic analysis on the high-strength concrete shear wall with boundary columns without distinguishing the categories of frame column and shear wall. The seismic performance of high-strength concrete shear wall with boundary columns was analyzed using the following parameters:axis compression ratio, height to width ratio, ratio of vertical reinforcement, and ratio of longitudinal reinforcement in the boundary column. The results show that the increase in the axial compression ratio causes the bearing capacity of the shear wall to increase at first and then to decrease and causes the ductility to decrease. The increase in the height to width ratio causes the bearing capacity of the shear wall to decrease and its ductility to increase. The ratio of vertical reinforcement was found to have little effect on the bearing capacity and ductility. The increase in the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement in boundary column resulted in a significant increase in the bearing capacity and caused the ductility to decrease at first and then to slowly increase. 展开更多

The longitudinal tensile properties of SiCf/Ti-6Al-4V composites with different fiber volume fractions were simulated by the Monte Carlo 2-D finite element model. The random distribution of fiber strength was expressed by the two-parameter Weibull function. Meanwhile, contact elements and birth-death elements were used to describe the interfacial sliding process after debonding and fiber breakage(or matrix cracking) respectively, which was realized by subroutine complied in ANSYS-APDL(ANSYS Parametric Design Language). The experimental results show that the yield stress and ultimate tensile strength of SiCf/Ti-6Al-4V composites increase with increasing fiber volume fraction, while the corresponding strain of them is just on the contrary. In addition, almost the same failure mode is obtained in SiCf/Ti-6Al-4V composites with various fiber volume fractions when the interfacial shear strength is fixed. Finally, the tensile strength predicted by finite element analysis is compared with that predicted by Global load-sharing model, Local load-sharing model and conventional rule of mixtures, thus drawing the conclusion that Local load-sharing model is very perfect for the prediction of the ultimate tensile strength. 展开更多

In recent years, precast segmental concrete bridge columns became prevalent because of the benefits of accelerated construction, low environmental impact, high quality and low life cycle costs. The lack of a detailed configuration and appropriate design procedure to ensure a comparable performance with monolithic construction has impeded this structural system from being widely used in areas of high seismicity. In this study, precast segmental bridge column cyclic loading tests were conducted to investigate the performance of unbonded post-tensioned segmental bridge columns. One monolithic and two precast segmental columns were tested. The preeast segmental column exhibited minor damage and small residual displacement after the maximum 7% cyclic drift; energy dissipation (ED) can be enhanced byadding ED bars. The experimental results were modeled by a simplified pushover method (SPOM), as well as a fiber model (FIBM) finite element method. Forty-five cases of columns with different aspect ratios, axial load ratios and ED bar ratios were analyzed with the SPOM and FIBM, respectively. Using these parametric results, a simplified design method was suggested by regressive analysis. Satisfactory correlation was found between the experimental results and the simplified design method for preeast segmental columns with different design parameters. 展开更多

A convenient approach is proposed for analyzing the ultimate load carrying capacity of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) arch bridge with stiffening girders. A fiber model beam element is specially used to simulate the stiffening girder and CFST arch rib. The geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity, influence of the construction process and the contribution of prestressing reinforcement are all taken into consideration. The accuracy of this method is validated by comparing its results with experimental results. Finally, the ultimate strength of an abnormal CFST arch bridge with stiffening girders is investigated and the effect of construction method is discussed. It is concluded that the construction process has little effect on the ultimate strength of the bridge. 展开更多

It has been repeatedly observed that the mechanical properties of microtomed wood sections are significantly lower than those of samples of normal size, but few investigations have been conducted to deal with this topic, especially based on theoretical approaches. We measured the longitudinal MOE of Chinese fir on microtomed sections ranging in thickness from 70 to 200 μm and compared these with the values of samples of normal size. The results indicate that the MOE of microtomed wood sections increases with thickness from 70 to 200 μm, but is significantly less than that of normal samples. A size effect coefficient of 2.63 is inferred based on statistical data for samples of normal size and 200 μm thick microtomed sections. Finally, an explanation based on a complete shear restraint model of cell walls and a single fiber multi-ply model is proposed for the size effect on stiffness of microtomed wood sections. 展开更多

Using our recently published electron’s charge electromagnetic flux manifold fiber model of the electron, described by analytical method and numerical simulations, we show how the fine structure constant is embedded as a geometrical proportionality constant in three dimensional space of its charge manifold and how this dictates the first QED term one-loop contribution of its anomalous magnetic moment making for the first time a connection of its intrinsic characteristics with physical geometrical dimensions and therefore demonstrating that the physical electron charge cannot be dimensionless. We show that the fine structure constant (FSC) α, and anomalous magnetic moment αμ of the electron is related to the sphericity of its charge distribution which is not perfectly spherical and thus has a shape, and therefore its self-confined charge possesses measurable physical dimensions. We also explain why these are not yet able to be measured by past and current experiments and how possible we could succeed. 展开更多

A new numerical strategy to model nonlinear damage behavior of RC beam-column member based on level of material and superconvergent computation is presented in this paper. A fiber damage analysis model (FDAM) for RC beam-column member is established by analyzing section of fiber beam column element with the uniaxial damage constitutive relations of con-crete. The damage index of RC member through statistical analysis of concrete fibers damage is defined in the extreme section of beam elements, which can describe the nonlinear damage behavior of RC beam-column member under any loadings. The newly proposed element energy projection (EEP) method is applied to the inelastic analysis of FDAM. EEP superconvergent formulas for section forces and deformations of beam-column are established, and general algorithm and numerical strategy adopting EEP super-convergent computation for section deformation increment are proposed in the classical Newton-Raphson process. Both analysis and numerical test show that the EEP method can effectively find out the nonlinear feature of the distribution, and accurately obtain the damage distribution of RC beamcolumn. The proposed numerical scheme in this paper proves to be effective and convenient in its use and can be easily integrated into the present inelastic FEM programs of structure analysis. 展开更多

In order to analyze and simulate the impact collapse or seismic response of the reinforced concrete(RC)structures,a combined fiber beam model is proposed by dividing the cross section of RC beam into concrete fiber and steel fiber. The stress-strain relationship of concrete fiber is based on a model proposed by concrete codes for concrete structures. The stress-strain behavior of steel fiber is based on a model suggested by others. These constitutive models are implemented into a general finite element program ABAQUS through the user defined subroutines to provide effective computational tools for the inelastic analysis of RC frame structures. The fiber model proposed in this paper is validated by comparing with experiment data of the RC column under cyclical lateral loading. The damage evolution of a three-dimension frame subjected to impact loading is also investigated. 展开更多

Reflective fiber optic sensors have advantages for surface roughness measurements of some special workpieces, but their measuring precision and efficiency need to be improved further. A least-squares support vector machine(LS-SVM)-based surface roughness prediction model is proposed to estimate the surface roughness, Ra, and the coupled simulated annealing(CSA) and standard simplex(SS) methods are combined for the parameter optimization of the mode. Experiments are conducted to test the performance of the proposed model, and the results show that the range of average relative errors is-4.232%–2.5709%. In comparison with the existing models, the LS-SVM-based model has the best performance in prediction precision, stability, and timesaving. 展开更多
