Effect of Electric Field-Assisted Diffusion on Surface Layer Structure and Mechanical Properties of Soda-Lime Glasses

Soda-lime glasses were treated by electric field-assisted diffusion(EFAD) process. The mechanical properties and structural evolution on both glass anode and cathode surfaces were investigated, respectively. It was found that the EFAD resulted in the formation of a Na depletion layer on anode surface, which caused the relaxation of the glass anode surface network and the formation of a number of defects. Correspondingly, the hardness and flexural strength declined in anode surface compared to that of the original glass. On the other hand, the EFAD also created a compressive layer on cathode surface, causing the improvement of the hardness and flexural strength on cathode surface. The defected structure could be reconstructed by additional annealing process. 展开更多

Conventional two-layered structure thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were prepared onto γ'-Ni3Al based alloy IC-6 by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). Isothermal oxidation and thermal cycling tests were carried out to investigate the effect of Mo content at the interface between bond coat and ceramic top coat caused by diffusion. It has been found that the alloy coated with TBCs presented the lowest oxidation weight gain value for the reason that the ceramic top coat in TBC system can effectively stop Mo oxides evaporating. The life time of TBCs has close relation with Mo content at the interface between the bond coat and top coat. Spaliation of ceramic top coat occurred during thermal cyclic testing when Mo atoms accumulated at the interface up to certain amount to decline the combination between the bond coat and top coat. 展开更多

Freeze-thaw processes significantly modulate hydraulic and thermal char- acteristics of soil. The changes in the frost and thaw fronts (FTFs) affect the water and energy cycles between the land surface and the atmosphere. Thus, the frozen soil com- prising permafrost and seasonally frozen soil has important effects on the land surface hydrology in cold regions. In this study, a two-directional freeze and thaw algorithm is incorporated into a thermal diffusion equation for simulating FTFs. A local adaptive variable-grid method is used to discretize the model. Sensitivity tests demonstrate that the method is stable and FTFs can be tracked continuously. The FTFs and soil tempera- ture at the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau D66 site are simulated hourly from September 1, 1997 to September 22, 1998. The results show that the incorporated model performs much better in the soil temperature simulation than the original thermal diffusion equation, showing potential applications of the method in land-surface process modeling. 展开更多

The diffusion mechanism of carbide-forming elements from a molten salt bath to a substrate surface was studied in this research, with particular focus on the processes occurring in the molten bath at the time of coating. Metal, oxide, and metal-oxide baths were investigated, and the coating process was performed on H13 steel substrates. Scanning electron microscopy and electron-probe microanalysis were used to study the coated samples and the quenched salt bath. The thickness of the carbide coating layer was 6.5 ± 0.5, 5.2 ± 0.5, or 5.7 ± 0.5 μm depending on whether it was deposited in a metal, oxide, or metal-oxide bath, respectively. The phase distribution of vanadium-rich regions was 63%, 57%, and 74% of the total coating deposited in metal, oxide, and metal-oxide baths, respectively. The results obtained using the metal bath indicated that undissolved suspended metal particles deposited onto the substrate surface. Then, carbon subsequently diffused to the substrate surface and reacted with the metal particles to form the carbides. In the oxide bath, oxide powders dissolved in the bath with or without binding to the oxidative structure(Na_2O) of borax; they were then reduced by aluminum and converted into metal particles. We concluded that, in the metal and oxide baths, the deposition of metal particles onto the sample surface is an important step in the formation of the coating. 展开更多

Solid-state bonding between pure titanium and Ti6Al4V(TC4)alloy was conducted by a new bonding method named as rigid restraint thermal self-compressing bonding.Effects of heating time on bonding interface,atom diffusion and mechanical properties of the joints were studied.Results show that atom diffusion between pure titanium and TC4 alloy significantly takes place during bonding.The diffusion depths of Al and V in pure titanium side are increased with increasing heating time.Due to the enhancement of atom diffusion,bond quality of the bonding interface is improved along with the increase of heating time.The heating time seems to have little effect on microhardness distribution across the joint.However,the tensile strength and ductility of the joint have close relation to heating time.Prolonging heating time can improve the tensile strength and ductility of the joint,especially the latter.When the heating time increases to 450 s,solid-state joint with good combination of strength and ductility is attained. 展开更多

Vanadium pentoxide, borax, boron carbide and sodium fluoride were used to grow vanadium carbide coating on surface of Crl2 steel at 950℃ by TD process. The coating of vanadium carbide (VC) extended the serve-life period of Crl2 steel as punching die. Kinetics of vanadium carbide coating growth was brought forward and verified by comparison of the mathematical model with the experimental results. The thickness of coating was illustrated by SEM. The chemical constituent of coating and remnants were tested by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). To increase the thickness, rare earth silicon powder (FeSiRe23) was added to the borax salt bath. The analysis of XRD revealed that FeSiRe23 increased the depth of vanadium car-bide coating as reducing agent and catalysis. 展开更多

The experimental chromizing ingredients were prepared by the four groups A, B, C, and D. In order to study the segregation status of this case, the cooling molten salt in the crucible was removed by drilling from the heart core of molten salt. The core of molten salt was analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and XRD. Through the analysis, we can conclude that the Cr element deposited in the bottom was 4.51 times than the top. Chloride added to the molten salt will reduce segregation. Meantime we proposed some measures to overcome the segregation problem. 展开更多

The variable temperature and uniform mass diffusion taking into account the chemical reaction of first order. The series solution method is used to solve the mathematical equations. Effects of various parameters like chemical reaction (K), thermal diffusion (ST) and magnetic field (M) etc. on velocity profile, skin friction, concentration profile and temperature field are displayed graphically and discussed numerically for different physical parameters. The peristaltic mechanism plays a crucial role in understanding numerous biological flows. In thispaper, we present a theoretical investigation of the double diffusion convection in the peristaltic transport of aPrandtl nanofluid through an asymmetric tapered channel under the combined action of thermal radiation andan induced magnetic field. The equations for the current flow scenario are developed, incorporating relevantassumptions, and considering the effect of viscous dissipation. The impact of thermal radiation and doublediffusion on public health is of particular interest. For instance, infrared radiation techniques have been used totreat various skin-related diseases and can also be employed as a measure of thermotherapy for some bones toenhance blood circulation, with radiation increasing blood flow by approximately 80%. To solve the governingequations, we employ a numerical method with the aid of symbolic software such as Mathematica and MATLAB.The velocity, magnetic force function, pressure rise, temperature, solute (species) concentration, and nanoparticlevolume fraction profiles are analytically derived and graphically displayed. The objective of present work is to study the thermo diffusion effect on an unsteady simultaneous convective heat and mass transfer flow of an incompressible, electrically conducting, heat generating/absorbing fluid along a semi-infinite moving porous plate embedded in a porous medium with the presence of pressure gradient, thermal radiation field and chemical reaction. It is assumed that the permeable plate is embedded in a uniform porous medium and moves with a constant velocity in the flow direction in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. It is also assumed that the free stream consists of a mean velocity, temperature and concentration over which are super imposed an exponentially varying with time. The equations of continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion, which govern the flow field, are solved by using a regular perturbation method. The behavior of the velocity, temperature, concentration, Skin-friction, rate of heat transfer and rate of mass transfer has been discussed for variations in the physical parameters. An increase in both Pr and R results a decrease in thermal boundary layer thickness. However, concentration decreases as Kr, Sc increase but it increases with an increase in both So and δ. 展开更多

In this article,numerical simulations are performed to investigate the performance of the thermal diffusion column for the separation of n-heptane/benzene mixture.The present work tried to optimize column by analyzing significant parameters such as feed flow rate,temperature and cut.In order to obtain the hydrodynamic and temperature and mass distribution inside thermal diffusion column,computational fluid dynamic(CFD) method is applied to solve the Navier-Stocks equations.Numerical simulations are conducted to study the main parameters in both stationary and time-dependent conditions.By using the separation work unit as a function of cut,the optimal cut for maximum SWU occurs within a limited range of 0.47-0.5 for feed rate between 0.5 and 4 g min^-1.Our findings reveal that the optimum feed rate in the range of optimum cut is about 1 g min^-1.In transient study,results show that the best cut for reaching to steady-state condition is θ=0.5. 展开更多

The ring-banded spherulite is a special morphology of polymer crystals and has attracted considerable attention over recent decades. In this study, a new phase field model with polymer characteristics is established to investigate the emergence and formation mechanism of the ring-banded spherulites of crystalline polymers. The model consists of a nonconserved phase field representing the phase transition and a temperature field describing the diffusion of the released latent heat. The corresponding model parameters can be obtained from experimentally accessible material parameters.Two-dimensional calculations are carried out for the ring-banded spherulitic growth of polyethylene film under a series of crystallization temperatures. The results of these calculations demonstrate that the formation of ring-banded spherulites can be triggered by the self-generated thermal field. Moreover, some temperature-dependent characteristics of the ring-banded spherulites observed in experiments are reproduced by simulations, which may help to study the effects of crystallization temperature on the ring-banded structures. 展开更多

A theoretical model is suggested to mathematically describe the effect of thermal diffusion from a sand-bed on evolution of a wind-blown sand flow. An upward wind field is engendered by the thermal diffusion and the coupling interaction among the horizontal and upward wind flow, saltating grains, and a kind of electrostatic force exerted on the grains are considered in this theoretical model. The numerical results show that the effect of the thermal diffusion on the evolution process of wind-blown groan flow is quite obvious and very similar to the effect of the electrostatic force on the evolution. Not only the time for the entire system to reach a steady state (called the duration time), the transport rate of grains, the mass-flux profiles and the trajectory of saltating grains are affected by the thermal diffusion and the electrostatic force exerted on saltating grains, but also the wind profiles and the temperature profiles at the steady state are affected by the wind-blown sand flow. 展开更多

We present a directional region control (DRC) model of thermal diffusion fractal growth with active heat diffusion in three-dimensional space. This model can be applied to predict the space body heat fractal growth and study its directional region control. When the nonlinear interference term and the inner heat source term are generalized functions, the relationship between the particle aggregation probability and the interference terms can be obtained using the norm theory. We can then predict the aggregation form of particles in different regions. When the nonlinear interference terms in the model are expressed as a trigonometric function and its composite function, our simulations show that the DRC method of thermal fractal diffusion is effective and has reference value for the directional control of actual fractal growth systems. 展开更多

Thermal diffusion (TD) salt bath chromizing of cold working dies was studied. Firstly, it obtained an ideal salt bath formula by comparing with a variety of formulas, and then obtained the influence rule of coating thickness based on studying of some process parameters. The microstructure morphologies and phase structures of the TD chromizing coating were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and other modern analysis methods.
