Balancing family obligations and personal aspirations is crucial for college students in making life decisions.This critical review examined empirical studies on the effects of filial piety on college students’vocati...Balancing family obligations and personal aspirations is crucial for college students in making life decisions.This critical review examined empirical studies on the effects of filial piety on college students’vocational identity and agency.According to identity capital theory,college students need a sense of agency to construct identity consciously and adapt to adulthood.Filial piety may profoundly influence this process as the core value and internalized social structure for the role of being an adult child in a Chinese family.However,no studies have been conducted from the identity capital perspective.This review found that filial piety had direct effects on college students'vocational identity and also indirect effects by shaping specific agency competencies.The impact of filial piety on the agency was more likely to occur through providing normative guidance about adult roles,influencing how college students view family as a supportive resource,and perpetuating parenting experiences.Based on these findings,this article suggested further examining the mediating role of agency between filial piety and identity development,as well as the effects of filial piety on the psychological foundation of agency development.This review suggested enhancing the agency of college students and encouraging reflections on filial piety in career education.展开更多
This study empirically examines whether child characteristics mitigate the negative impact of widowhood on the elderly’s mental health using follow-up survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Stu...This study empirically examines whether child characteristics mitigate the negative impact of widowhood on the elderly’s mental health using follow-up survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS).A total of 5,326 older adults aged 60 years and older are selected from three waves of panel data(2013,2015,and 2018).Thefindings suggest that respondents who experienced widowhood exhibit an increase in depressive symptoms.However,the higher income of children and frequent face-to-face emotional interactions improve the mental health of the widowed elderly.Moreover,heterogeneity analyses show that the buffering effect of higher child income is more significant among men and the Midwestern widowed elderly,and frequent face-to-face emotional interactions are more effective in improving the psychological status of women and the Midwes-tern widowed elderly.In the special social and cultural background of China,family members remain the main support for the elderly,and the current social pension system is still imperfect.Therefore,children should strengthen emotional communication with their parents while increasing their economic income.In that way,widowhood can achieve both material and spiritual prosperity.The government should identify the vulnerable groups among the elderly widows and introduce policies aimed at improving their mental health and reducing the disparity in mental health status.展开更多
To reduce the risks associated with over-dependence on synthetic insecticides and ensure leguminous food security, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the potentials of integrating Piper guineense essential oil (...To reduce the risks associated with over-dependence on synthetic insecticides and ensure leguminous food security, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the potentials of integrating Piper guineense essential oil (PgEO) with cowpea varietal resistance in the control of cowpea seed beetle, Callosobruehus maculatus Fabricius. Four cowpea varieties (Sokoto, Drum, Oloyin and Gwallam) were studied. Data collected included oviposition, progeny emergence, Reproductive Efficiency (RE) and Percentage Seed Damage (PSD). At first filial generation, numbers of eggs laid on Oloyin variety treated with 25 μL PgEO per 25 g cowpea seeds (2.15) were significantly (p〈0.05) lower than the values obtained in untreated cowpea (3.61) and hexane-treated seeds (3.07). C. maculatus RE on Oloyin (33.73) was significantly (p〈0.05) lower than values obtained on other varieties (47.34-54.67) for seeds without PgEO; and were significantly greater than 0.00 observed on Oloyin seeds treated with 50 pL PgEO. PSD on Oloyin (6.63%) was significantly (p〈0.05) lower than the values obtained on Sokoto (10.04%) and Drum (9.79%) for seeds without PgEO, while there was no damage in Oloyin treated with 50 pL PgEO. Significantly (p〈0.05) lower F2 progeny emergence occurred on Oloyin (4.02) and Sokoto (4.71) compared with Drum (9.03) and Gwallam (6.07) from the untreated cowpea seeds. The results implied that application of PgEO to Oloyin gave better protection from infestation of C. maculatus than other varieties. Hence, combination of varietal resistance with PgEO for management ofbruchid could be an effective mean of improving cowpea food security.展开更多

Isozyme banding patterns indicated these hybrids were diploid. Loci that were observed as being monomorphic in inbred populations of C. farreri were also found to be monomorphic in filial progeny; loci that observed to be polymorphic in parental type gen- erations were also polymorphic in hybrid generations. Differences existed among allelic frequency of the four types of cross. Within the reciprocal hybrids the expression of malic enzyme (ME) isozyme was sufficient to distinguishing individual hybrids because of the band, Rf=0.38. However, there were no noticeable variations among all the samples to differentiate one from another. Inbreeding was likely to be the main problem in aqua- culture. The introduction of new broodstock can improve the genetic diversity. Hybrid vigor has manifested to a certain extent in the present study.展开更多

The aim of the current study was to compare between three generations groups of Arab and Jewish male’s attitudes towards filial responsibility. 121 university students, their fathers (116) and their grandfathers (114...The aim of the current study was to compare between three generations groups of Arab and Jewish male’s attitudes towards filial responsibility. 121 university students, their fathers (116) and their grandfathers (114), answered a self-report questionnaire, which measured filial responsibility attitudes, type of attachment;self-esteem;sense of mastery and, family support. Results revealed ethnicity and religiosity differences as well as between-generations differences regarding filial responsibility. An additional finding brought to light the cross-generational differences in the relationship between the attachment style in adulthood and the attitudes regarding filial responsibility. The most important finding shows that the Arab male, especially in the youngest generation, finds himself in a socio-psychological-internal conflict between tradition and modernization regarding the family norms. Arab society, in attitudes towards filial responsibility, is still traditional in terms of its approach to the institutions of clan and, the men status within the family. Through a comparative study of the liberal theory of intergenerational equity, this paper shows that at least in the contemporary social context of China, filial piety still acts as an important moral foundation and value basis for the intergenerational distribution of old-age support resources. The emphasis on an intergenerational contract based on filial piety not only presents a theoretical perspective transcending liberalism for addressing the issue of intergenerational equity in the context of contemporary China, but also provides significant and irreplaceable institutional resources. Starting from the Confucian family-centered theory of social justice and through the reconstitution of traditional ethical resources, this paper explores a family-centered, multi-level old-age security system to cope with the issue of intergenerational equity against the backdrop of population aging.展开更多

文摘Piety culture can be traced back to thousands years ago both in Chinese and western cultures.In the classic works Euthyphro and The Analects,piety has different connotations.In the paper,a comparative study on piety between Chinese and western culture is conducted with the exploration and comparison between the origins of piety in different cultures,and the analysis of different parent-child relationships under different piety cultures.It is concluded that both piety culture of China and western countries should be given due attention and respect.
