This research paper performs a numerical simulation using the finite element method (FEM) to study electromagnetic propagation through both conductive and dielectric media. The simulations are made using the COMSOL Multiphysics software which notably implements the finite element method. The microwave is produced by a Vivaldi antenna at the respective frequencies of 2.6 and 5 GHz and the propagation equation is formulated from Maxwell’s equations. The results obtained show that in the air, strong electric fields are observed in the slot and the micro-strip line for the two frequencies, they are even greater when the wave propagates in the glass and very weak for the copper. The 3D evolutions of the wave in air and glass present comparable values at equal frequencies, the curves being more regular in air (dielectric). The radiation patterns produced for air and glass are directional, with a large main lobe, which is narrower at 5 GHz. For copper, the wave propagation is quite uniform in space, and the radiation patterns show two main lobes with a much larger size at 2.6 GHz than at 5 GHz. The propagation medium would therefore influence the range of values of the gain of the antenna.展开更多

The effects of different shapes of multiple inclusions on the material thermomechanical response are investigated, and the level set method is coupled with XFEM to analyze the interaction of multiple defects. Further, the discretized extended finite element approximations in relation to thermoelastic problems of multiple defects under displacement or temperature field are given. Also, the interfaces of cracks or materials are represented by level set functions, which allow the mesh assignment not to conform to crack or material interfaces. Moreover, stress intensity factors of cracks are obtained by the interaction integral method or the M-integral method, and the stress/strain/stiffness fields are simulated in the case of multiple cracks or multiple inclusions. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the accuracy of our proposed method.展开更多

These two methods have almost the same accuracy from theoretical aspect with regular boundaries, but generally Finite Element Method produces better approximations when the boundaries are irregular. In order to investigate which method produces better results from numerical aspect, we apply these methods into specific examples with regular boundaries with constant step-size for both of them. The results which obtained confirm, in most of the cases, the theoretical results.展开更多

文摘In this paper, the extended finite element method (XFEM) is adopted to analyze the interaction between a single macroscopic inclusion and a single macroscopic crack as well as that between multiple macroscopic or microscopic defects under thermal/mechanical load. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the accuracy of our proposed method.
文摘We present a high performance modularly-built open-source software-OpenIFEM.OpenIFEM is a C++implementation of the modified immersed finite element method(mIFEM)to solve fluid-structure interaction(FSI)problems. This software is modularly built to perform multiple tasks including fluid dynamics(incompressible and slightly compressible fluid models),linear and nonlinear solid mechanics, and fully coupled fluid-structure interactions. Most of open-source software packages are restricted to certain discretization methods;some are under-tested,under-documented,and lack modularity as well as extensibility.OpenIFEM is designed and built to include a set of generic classes for users to adapt so that any fluid and solid solvers can be coupled through the FSI algorithm. In addition, the package utilizes well-developed and tested libraries. It also comes with standard test cases that serve as software and algorithm validation. The software can be built on cross-platform,i.e.,Linux,Windows,and Mac OS,using CMake.Efficient parallelization is also implemented for high-performance computing for large-sized problems.OpenIFEM is documented using Doxygen and publicly available to download on GitHub.It is expected to benefit the future development of FSI algorithms and be applied to a variety of FSI applications.
文摘In this paper, we consider two methods, the Second order Central Difference Method (SCDM) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) with P1 triangular elements, for solving two dimensional general linear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDE) with mixed derivatives along with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The results which obtained confirm, in most of the cases, the theoretical results.
