As an important design factor for constructed wetlands, hydraulic retention time and its distribution will affect the treatment performance.Instantaneously injected sodium chloride tracers were used to obtain residence time distributions of the lab scale subsurface flow constructed wetland.Considering the presence of trailing and multiple peaks of the tracer breakthrough curve, the multi flow dispersion model(MFDM)was used to fit the experimental tracer breakthrough curves.According to the residual sum of squares and comparison between the experimental values and simulated values of the tracer concentration,MFDM could fit the residence time distribution(RTD)curve satisfactorily, the results of which also reflected the layered structure of wetland cells, thus to give reference for application of MFDM to the same kind of subsurface flow constructed wetlands. 展开更多

The longitudinal dispersion of solute in open channel flow with short period progressive waves is investigated. The waves induce second order drift velocity in the direction of propagation and enhance the mixing process in concurrent direction. The 1-D wave-period-averaged dispersion equation is derived and an expression for the wave-current induced longitudinal dispersion coefficient (WCLDC) is propased based on Fiscber' s expression (1979) for dispersion in unidirectional flow. The result shows that the effect of waves on dispersion is mainly due to the cross-sectional variation of the drift velocity. Furthermore, to obtain a more practical expression of the WCLDC, the longitudinal dispersion coefficient due to Seo and Cheong (1998) is modified to incluee the effect of drift velocity. Laboratory experiments have been conducted to verify the propased expression. The experimental results, together with dimensional analysis, show that tbe wave effect can be reflected by the ratio between the wave amplitude and wave period. A comparative study between the cases with and without waves demonstrates that the magnitude of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient is increased nnder the presence of waves. 展开更多

This is an analytical study on the time develop- ment of hydrodynamic dispersion of an inert species in elec- troosmotic flow through a rectangular channel. The objec- tive is to determine how the channel side walls may affect the dispersion coefficient at different instants of time. To this end, the generalized dispersion model, which is valid for short and long times, is employed in the present study. An- alytical expressions are derived for the convection and dis- persion coefficients as functions of time, the aspect ratio of the channel, and the Debye-Htickel parameter representing the thickness of the electric double layer. For transport in a channel of large aspect ratio, the dispersion may undergo several stages of transience. The initial, fast time develop- ment is controlled by molecular diffusion across the narrow channel height, while the later, slower time development is governed by diffusion across the wider channel breadth. For a sufficiently large aspect ratio, there can be an interlude between these two periods during which the coefficient is nearly steady, signifying the resemblance of the transport to that in a parallel-plate channel. Given a sufficiently long time, the dispersion coefficient will reach a fully-developed steady value that may be several times higher than that with- out the side wall effects. The time scales for these periods of transience are identified in this paper. 展开更多

This paper aims to propose correlations to predict pressure gradient, friction factor and fluid phase hold-up in liquid-liquid horizontal pipe flow.To develop the correlations, experiments are conducted using high viscous oils(202 and 630 mPa⋅s)in a steel pipe of length 11.25 m and length-to-diameter ratio of 708.In addition, the experimental data from the literature comprising wide range of flow and fluid properties is analyzed. For the analysis, the liquid-liquid pipe flow data is categorized into two as:stratified and dispersed. The existing friction factor correlations are modified to incorporate the effects of viscosity of the oil phase, interfacial curvature(contact/wetting angle-in lieu of material of the pipe)and fluid phase fraction. In the two-fluid model of stratified flow, the wall stress and interfacial stress correlations are substituted with superficial velocities of fluids and superficial Reynolds numbers of fluid phases replacing fluid phase velocities and fluid Reynolds numbers.Similarly, for dispersed flow,an effective Reynolds number is described as the sum of superficial Reynolds number of oil and water phases.Substituting the generally employed mean or mixture Reynolds number with the effective Reynolds number into the existing single-phase turbulent flow friction factor correlation,an effective friction factor for oil-water flow is proposed.Employing the proposed correlations, the pressure gradient across the oil-water flow and hold-up volume fraction are predicted with significant reduction in error compared with that of conventionally employed correlations. The average error and standard deviation values of−7.06%,20.72%and 0.31%,18.79%are found for stratified flow and dispersed flow respectively. 展开更多

This study focuses on the transient analysis of nonlinear dispersion of a polymeric pollutant ejected by an external source into a laminar pipe flow of a Newtonian liquid under axi-symmetric conditions. The influence of density variation with pollutant concentration is approximated according to the Boussinesq approximation and the nonlinear governing equations of momentum, pollutant concentration are obtained together with and Oldroyd-B constitutive model for the polymer stress. The problem is solved numerically using a semi-implicit finite difference method.Solutions are presented in graphical form for various parameter values and given in terms of fluid velocity, pollutant concentration, polymer stress components, skin friction and wall mass transfer rate. The model can be a useful tool in understanding the dynamics of industrial pollution situations arising from improper discharge of hydrocarbon pollutants into, say, water bodies. The model can also be quite useful for available necessary early warning methods for detecting or predicting the scale of pollution and hence help mitigate related damage downstream by earlier instituting relevant decontamination measures. 展开更多

Inthis paper, each of the two phases in dense two-phase flow is considered as continuous medium and the fundamental equations for two-phase flow arc described in Eulerian form. The generalized constitutive relation of the Bingham fluid is applied to the dispersed phase with the analysis oj physical mechanism of dense two-phase flow. The shearing stress of dispersed phase at a wall is used to give a boundary condition. Then a mathematical model for dense two-phase flow is obtained. In addition, the expressions of shearing stress of dispersed phase at a wall is derived according to the fundamental model of the friclional collision between dispersed-plutse particles and the wall. 展开更多

This paper presents a numerical model that simulates the wind fields, turbulence fields, and dispersion of gaseous substances in urban areas on building to city block scales. A Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) approach using the steady-state, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations with the standard k-ε turbulence model within control volumes of non-uniform cuboid shapes has been employed. Dispersion field is computed by solving an unsteady transport equation of passive scalar. Another approach based on Gaussian plume model is used to correct the turbulent Schmidt number of tracer, in order to improve the dispersion simulation. The experimental data from a wind tunnel under neutral conditions are used to validate the numerical results of velocity, turbulence, and dispersion fields. The numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the wind tunnel data. The deviation of concentration between the simulation with corrected turbulent Schmidt number and the wind tunnel experiments may arise from 1) imperfect point sources, 2) heterogeneous turbulent difusivity, and 3) the constant turbulent Schmidt assumption used in the model. 展开更多

Turbulent dispersed multiphase flows, including gas-particle,gas-droplet and bubble-liquid flows, are widely encountered in various engineering facilities.Modeling of two-phase turbulence,in particular the dispersed phase turbulence,is the key problem in the Eulerian-Eulerian simulation of practical dispersed multiphase flows.Although different models were developed and used, the experimental validation shows that they cannot always give satisfactory prediction results. In this paper the present author give a detailed review of the unified second-order moment (USM),k-k p and nonlinear k-k p two-phase turbulence models, proposed by him.The derivation and closure of these models are described in detail and the experimental validation and application of these models are extensively discussed. 展开更多
