A new instantaneous mobile bed thickness model is presented for sediment transport in skewed asymmetric oscillatory sheet flows. The proposed model includes a basic bed load part and a suspended load part related to the Shields parameter, and takes into account the effects of mass conservation, phase-lag, and asymmetric boundary layer development, which are important in skewed asymmetric flows but usually absent in classical models. The proposed model is validated by erosion depth and sheet flow layer thickness data in both steady and unsteady flows, and applied to a new instantaneous sediment transport rate formula. With higher accuracy than classical empirical models in steady flows, the new formula can also be used for instantaneous sediment transport rate prediction in skewed asymmetric oscillatory sheet flows. 展开更多

The problem of the steady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stagnation-point flow of an incompressible viscous fluid over a stretching sheet is studied. The effect of an induced magnetic field is taken into account. The nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations via the similarity transformation. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically using the shooting method. Numerical results are obtained for various magnetic parameters and Prandtl numbers. The effects of the induced magnetic field on the skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number, the velocity, and the temperature profiles are presented graphically and discussed in detail. 展开更多

The present article investigates the dual nature of the solution of the magneto- hydrodynamic (MHD) stagnation-point flow of a Prandtl fluid model towards a shrinking surface. The self-similar nonlinear ordinary differential equations are solved numerically by the shooting: method. It is found that the dual solutions of the flow exist for cer- tain values of tile velocity ratio parameter. The special case of the first branch solutions (the classical Newtonian fluid model) is compared with the present numerical results of stretching flow. The results are found to be in good agreement. It is also shown that the boundary layer thickness for the second solution is thicker than that for the first solution. 展开更多

In this paper, the effect of non-uniform heat flux on heat transfer in boundary layer stagnation-point flow over a shrinking sheet is studied. The variable boundary heat fluxes are considered of two types: direct power-law variation with the distance along the sheet and inverse power-law variation with the distance. The governing partial differential equations (PDEs) are transformed into non linear self-similar ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by similarity transformations, and then those are solved using very efficient shooting method. The direct variation and inverse variation of heat flux along the sheet have completely different effects on the temperature distribution. Moreover, the heat transfer characteristics in the presence of non-uniform heat flux for several values of physical parameters are also found to be interesting. 展开更多

In this paper, we present the study of momentum characteristics in a MHD viscous flow over a stretching sheet. First the partial differential equations of motion have been transformed to an ordinary differential equation. The analytical method called Differential Transformation Method (DTM) powered by the Pade’ approximation is applied to solve the nonlinear equation derived from MHD viscous flow over a stretching sheet, the effect of parameters variation has been investigated for two numerical cases and finally the analytical results have been compared with numerical one in a numerical case. The obtained results approve its efficiencies and capabilities beside numerical solutions achieved from Runge Kutta method. 展开更多

An analytical model with essential parameters given by a two-phase numerical model is utilized to study the net boundary layer current and sediment transport under skewed asymmetric oscillatory sheet flows. The analytical model is the first instantaneous type model that can consider phase-lag and asymmetric boundary layer development. The two-phase model supplies the essential phase-lead, instantaneous erosion depth and boundary layer development for the analytical model to enhance the understanding of velocity skewness and acceleration skewness in sediment flux and transport rate. The sediment transport difference between onshore and offshore stages caused by velocity skewness or acceleration skewness is shown to illustrate the determination of net sediment transport by the analytical model. In previous studies about sediment transport in skewed asymmetric sheet flows, the generation of net sediment transport is mainly concluded to the phase-lag effect. However, the phase-lag effect is shown important but not enough for the net sediment transport, while the skewed asymmetric boundary layer development generated net boundary layer current and mobile bed effect are key important in the transport process. 展开更多

The magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) steady and unsteady axisymmetric flows of a viscous fluid over a two-dimensional shrinking sheet are addressed. The mathematical analysis is carried out in the presence of a large magnetic field. The steady state problem results in a singular perturbation problem having an infinite domain singularity. The secular term appearing in the solution is removed and a two-term uniformly valid solution is derived using the Lindstedt–Poincaré technique. This asymptotic solution is validated by comparing it with the numerical solution. The solution for the unsteady problem is also presented analytically in the asymptotic limit of large magnetic field. The results of velocity profile and skin friction are shown graphically to explore the physical features of the flow field. The stability analysis of the unsteady flow is made to validate the asymptotic solution. 展开更多

In the investigation, a constant wall mass transfer is considered. With the help of similarity transformations, the governing partial differential equations(PDEs) are converted into a nonlinear self-similar ordinary differential equation(ODE). For the numerical solution of transformed self-similar ODE, the shooting method is applied. The study reveals that the steady flow of Maxwell fluid is possible with a smaller amount of imposed mass suction compared with the viscous fluid flow. Dual solutions for the velocity distribution are obtained. Also, the increase of Deborah number reduces the boundary layer thickness for both solutions. 展开更多

An unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary layer flow over a shrinking permeable sheet embedded in a moving viscous electrically conducting fluid is investigated both analytically and numerically. The velocity slip at the solid surface is taken into account in the boundary conditions. A novel analytical method named DTM- BF is proposed and used to get the approximate analytical solutions to the nonlinear governing equation along with the boundary conditions at infinity. All analytical results are compared with those obtained by a numerical method. The comparison shows good agreement, which validates the accuracy of the DTM-BF method. Moreover, the existence ranges of the dual solutions and the unique solution for various parameters are obtained. The effects of the velocity slip parameter, the unsteadiness parameter, the magnetic parameter, the suction/injection parameter, and the velocity ratio parameter on the skin friction, the unique velocity, and the dual velocity profiles are explored, respectively. 展开更多

The magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) flow induced by a stretching or shrinking sheet under slip conditions is studied.Analytical solutions based on the boundary layer assumption are obtained in a closed form and can be applied to a flow configuration with any arbitrary velocity distributions. Seven typical sheet velocity profiles are employed as illustrating examples. The solutions to the slip MHD flow are derived from the general solution and discussed in detail. Different from self-similar boundary layer flows, the flows studied in this work have solutions in explicit analytical forms. However, the current flows require special mass transfer at the wall, which is determined by the moving velocity of the sheet. The effects of the slip parameter, the mass transfer at the wall, and the magnetic field on the flow are also demonstrated. 展开更多

This work deals with the boundary layer flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting viscous fluid over a stretching sheet. Lie-group method is applied for determining the symmetry reductions for the governing equations by reducing the number of independent variables in the given system of partial differential equations by one, leading to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equation. The resulting system is then solved numerically using shooting method coupled with Runge-Kutta scheme. Effects of various values of physical parameters on the horizontal and vertical velocities, temperature profiles, wall heat transfer and the wall shear stress (skin friction), have been studied and the results are plotted. Furthermore, a comparison between the present results with existing numerical and homotopy methods has been reported and we found that they are in a good agreement. 展开更多

In this article, we present accurate analytical solutions for boundary layer flow and heat transfer of an incompressible and electrically conducting viscoelastic fluid over a linearly stretching surface subject to a transverse uniform magnetic field using the homotopy analysis method (HAM) for two general types of non-isothermal boundary conditions. In addition, we demonstrate that the previously reported analytical solutions for the temperature field given in terms of Kummer's function do not converge at the boundary. We provide a graphical and numerical demonstration of the convergence of the HAM solutions and tabulate the effects of various parameters on the skin friction coefficient and wall heat transfer. 展开更多

Similarity equations are obtained through the application of similar transformation techniques. Numerical techniques are used to solve the similarity equations for different values of the unsteadiness parameter, the mass suction parameter, the shrinking parameter and the Prandtl number on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the skin friction coefficient and the Nusselt number. It is found that, different from an unsteady stretching sheet, dual solutions exist in a certain range of mass suction and unsteadiness parameters. 展开更多

An electrically conducting fluid is driven by a stretching sheet, in the presence of a magnetic field that is strong enough to produce significant Hall current. The sheet is porous, allowing mass transfer through suction or injection. The limiting behavior of the flow is studied, as the magnetic field strength grows indefinitely. The flow variables are properly scaled, and uniformly valid asymptotic expansions of the velocity components are obtained through parameter straining. The leading order approximations show sinusoidal behavior that is decaying exponentially, as we move away from the surface. The two-term expansions of the surface shear stress components, as well as the far field inflow speed, compare well with the corresponding finite difference solutions;even at moderate magnetic fields. 展开更多

The present work is concerned with the effects of viscous dissipation and heat source/sink on a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer axisymmetric stagnation flow, and the heat transfer of an electrically conducting fluid over a sheet, which shrinks or stretches axisymmetrically in its own plane where the line of the symmetry of the stagnation flow and that of the shrinking (stretching) sheet are, in general, not aligned. The governing equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations by using suitable similarity transformations and then solved numerically by a shooting technique. This investigation explores the conditions of the non-existence, existence and uniqueness of the solutions of the similar equations numerically. It is noted that the range of the velocity ratio parameter, where the similarity solution exists, is increased with the increase of the value of the magnetic parameter. Furthermore, the study reveals that the non-alignment function affects the shrinking sheet more than the stretching sheet. In addition, the numerical results of the velocity profile, temperature profile, skin-friction coefficient, and rate of heat transfer at the sheet are discussed in detail with different parameters. 展开更多

This article explores the boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a viscous nanofluid bounded by a hyperbolically stretching sheet. Effects of Brownian and thermophoretic diffusions on heat transfer and concentration of nanoparticles are given due attention. The resulting nonlinear problems are computed for analytic and numerical solutions. The effects of Brownian motion and thermophoretic property are found to increase the temperature of the medium and reduce the heat transfer rate. The thermophoretic property thus enriches the concentration while the Brownian motion reduces the concentration of the nanoparticles in the fluid. Opposite effects of these properties are observed on the Sherwood number. 展开更多
