An Integration of Meaning-Focused and Form-Focused Approach in EFL Reading and Writing——a Conceptual Inquiry and Experiment

Whether to adopt the meaning-oriented or form-oriented approach in EFL teaching has been in hot academic debate in the past decades. This paper investigates the literature contribution on these two methods, attempts an integration of the two,and introduces a teaching experiment of EFL reading and writing at China Agricultural University.

Meaning's Death and Rebirth-Analysis on the Content and Form of Robert Morgan's"Mountain Graveyard"

This thesis mainly analyzes the content and form of Robert Morgan's postmodern poem"Mountain Graveyard". With New Criticism's method of close reading, it firstly explores the possible interpretations of the poem's content. Then it analyzes the post-modernity due to the poem's form, pointing out that with the unique form breaking traditional poetry's conventions, and the upspring of multiple meanings from the content, this poem presents brilliantly the postmodern spirit, which rejects definite centers and embraces various diversity of meaning.

Dual Focus on Form and Meaning in Task-based Oral English Teaching

The task-based approach has been gaining more and more popularity in recent years. Unlike the traditional language teaching approach, which puts much emphasis on the teaching and learning of language forms and skills, it regards the language process as one of learning through doing, emphasizes the central role of meaning in language use and insists that students should learn more effectively if they are fully engaged in a language task. However, due to the lack of an appropriate language environment and limited time for English study, Chinese students may not make as much progress as expected in the unconscious internalization of authentic language by focusing primarily on meaning. In fact the meaning of a language can not be separated from its form. The accurate expression of meaning depends on the proper use of language form. Therefore, in the application of the taskbased approach, we should not neglect the study of language form. This paper analyses the causes for Chinese students' low spoken English proficiency, describes the theoretical foundation and actual practice of the task-based approach, discusses its implications for teaching oral English and makes some proposals for its appropriate application.

Meaning and Form

Through the analysis of the translation of words, phrases, sentences and passages, this paper discusses the problem of whether to put emphasis on the translation of the meaning or on the reservation of the forms of the original works in translation. This paper puts forward that the translation of the meaning is more important, and the meaning of the original should take the advantage when the forms and the meanings cannot be reserved at the same time. And it also says that in no way should the translator sacrifice the translation of the meaning for the sake of keeping the form, and the translator should avoid translating word for word without thinking of the translation of the meaning. This paper also discusses about the consideration of the style of the original, the target readers and the style of the writer. This paper puts forward that in translation importance should be placed on the translation of the meaning rather than keeping the form.

A Comparison between Focus on Meaning and Focus on Form Instruction

In the research field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA),how language input should be presented to language learners in the classroom has been an issue generating considerable discussion and experimentation. The recent debate is whether focus on form (FonF) instruction has more advantages over focus on meaning (FonM) instruction in foreign language teaching or vice versa. The purpose of the paper is to review the relevant previous literature and empirical researches for a detailed comparison and analysis of the two approaches and finally present a conclusion for further discussion.

The Esthetic Connection between Chorus Voice and “Form”

Music is the art of sound,while chorus is the art of group vocal music.Choral art takes human voice as the carrier to express thoughts,emotions,and artistic images through sound.Harmonious,unified,balanced sound gives people the enjoyment of beauty and brings people-related pictorial association.As a unique form of vocal music art,chorus is also a comprehensive stage art belonging to the category of performance,which is a sister art belonging to the same and different families,such as dance and drama.In the visual arts such as dance and drama,the melody,timbre,and harmony of music match the figures appearing on the stage or screen.So that when we hear some kind of music there will belyrical beautiful,strong magnificent,or lively jumping,dark melancholy and so on feelings and associations.From ancient to modern times,in daily life,people sang and danced scenes were also their immediate reflection of music aesthetic feelings.Some of these aesthetic experiences are vague and some are specific.For example:We may think some music is humorous or sad,but when people hear the music,such as"the devil into the village",we will think of the scene in that movie.Which associated the Anti-Japanese War.In chorus,the influence of“form”on the aesthetic feeling of sound,or from the perspective of reverse thinking,canbe said to be the aesthetic expression of“form”by sound,which can relate to the breath of singing,the resonance position and the effect and change of the expression state.The audience can feel the chorus’s expression of aesthetic emotion directly from their hearing and then has a significant influence on the music sound and singing effect.In this paper,through the association of“form”to sound and aesthetic influence,with the help of some in the dance to tighten the intuitive posture,to chorus vertical sound insporation.Starting from the identity of visual perception and sound perception,this paper tries to understand our requirements for chorus singing from a reverse perspective.To maintain the breath of the chorus sound,to control the state,to establish the sound of harmony,unity and balance,as well as the performance of the overall sound effect,etc,to make a different angle of interpretation.

Form-meaning Mapping in a Second Language

The mapping of lexical form to meaning is essential to vocabulary acquisition in a second language. This paper reviews and analyzes the key models which help to reveal the process of adult learners' development of conceptual representation for words in a second language. It concludes that both learners' gradual development of L2 proficiency and the lexical and conceptual features of L2 words affect learners' achievement of direct concept mediation for L2 words.

Integration system research and development for three-dimensional laser scanning information visualization in goaf

An integration processing system of three-dimensional laser scanning information visualization in goaf was developed. It is provided with multiple functions, such as laser scanning information management for goaf, cloud data de-noising optimization, construction, display and operation of three-dimensional model, model editing, profile generation, calculation of goaf volume and roof area, Boolean calculation among models and interaction with the third party soft ware. Concerning this system with a concise interface, plentiful data input/output interfaces, it is featured with high integration, simple and convenient operations of applications. According to practice, in addition to being well-adapted, this system is favorably reliable and stable.

一种基于K-means与Close-Form融合的树木图像提取方法

基于图像的树木自动提取是其种类、长势、形态等信息智能化判别的基础,如何实现树木的自动、准确、快速提取是具有实用性的科学问题。在自然场景中,由于图像元素多样、颜色差异大,树木自身存在不规则性,树木提取难度非常大。针对现有的图像分割与图像抠图法在树木提取过程中分别存在的误分割与过程复杂所导致的计算量大的问题,提出了一种基于K-means聚类算法优化Close-Form图像抠图的树木提取方法。在少量的标记下,依据颜色线性假设进行最小化代价函数计算,得到图像透明度;对透明度图像依次进行中值滤波、高斯滤波,得到透明度的去噪图像;对滤波后透明度与标准化的图像绿色分量组成二维空间进行K-means二聚类,实现背景与前景对象的准确判定,进而完成自然背景的树木图像提取。为了验证所提方法在不同场景和不同标记下的树木提取有效性,设计了基于K-means图像分割和传统Close-Form抠图方法的比较性试验。结果表明,基于K-means优化Close-Form的树木提取方法解决了传统Close-Form算法在少量标记下图像前景、背景估计不准确问题,克服了图像分割存在的误分类情况,实现了不同自然环境和多目标树木对象的提取。此方法具有对象提取稳定、计算时间快的优点,相对原Close-Form算法用时减少49.98%。

Focus on Form:高中语法教学的新途径

分析了Focus on form的涵义,重点探讨了Focus on form在高中语法教学中的应用,指出Focuson form是在第二语言教学中兼顾形式和意义,促进目标语发展的一种有效手段。提出了目标结构的可理解性输入,引导学生发现性学习,显性教学,必用目标语结构的交际任务,反馈与纠错等具体实施方法。

Contemporary Development in College Grammar Instruction—The Application of Focus on Form Approach

Based on the theoretical presentations of a contemporary development in grammar instruction named focus on form as well as the analysis of the need for such grammar instructional approach utilized in Chinese college classrooms, this paper attempts to make a tentative proposal to apply focus on form approach to grammar teaching in colleges through recommending practicable instructional reflections.

Determining Nuclear Form factor for Detection of Dark Matter in Relativistic Mean Field Theory

In this work, we derive the nuclear form factor for the spin-independent collision between the WIMPs and nucleus in terms of the relativistic mean field （RMF） theory. Comparison with the traditional form factors which are commonly used in literature is given and it is found that our results are slightly above that of the 2PF model by 4% to 8%, but deviate from the Helm form factor by 15% to 25% for the whole recoil energy spectrum of 0 -100 keV. Moreover, taking Xe and Ge as examples, we show the dependence of the form Factor on the recoil energy.

ON THE COMPLETE 2-DIMENSIONALλ-TRANSLATORS WITH A SECOND FUNDAMENTAL FORM OF CONSTANT LENGTH

In this article we study the two-dimensional completeλ-translators immersed in the Euclidean space R^3 and Minkovski space R1^ 3.We obtain two classification theorems:one for two-dimensional completeλ-translators x:M 2→R^3 and one for two-dimensional complete space-likeλ-translators x:M 2→R1^3,with a second fundamental form of constant length.

Hypersurfaces with Constant Mean Curvature in Space Forms

In this paper,we study the pinching problem for a hypersurface with constant mean curvature in space forms to be totally umbilical by osing the relationship between the square of the length of the second fundamental form and the mean curvature. We obtained a best pinching interval and decided the complete classification of hypersurfaces at the terminal of the interval.This improved the relative results of M. Okumura,Shen Yibihg and Sun Ziqi,etc.

Protection of Women's Rights Means Human Rights Protection——Marking the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women

On December 18, 1979, the 34th General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women with an overwhelming majority of the votes in its favor. Over the past 30 years, the Convention has come to be known by increasing numbers of governments and people, particularly women＇s organizations. It has played an increasingly great role in protecting women＇s rights and enhancing women＇s status in society.

Sample geometric mean versus sample median in closed form framework of seismic reliability evaluation: a case study comparison

Earthquake engineers have made a lot of efforts to derive a comprehensive set of closed form expressions for performance evaluation of frames, which are already presented in guidelines such as SAC/FEMA. These analytical expressions have been developed to estimate the annual probability of exceeding a limit state. In the process of such seismic assessments, some essential assumptions are adopted to simplify the process. One of these fundamental assumptions declares that drift demand at any seismic intensity level follows a lognormal distribution around its median. To investigate the validity of this assumption, this paper describes a case study of the types of errors that could be produced by using the sample median as the central tendency. Based on the Maximum Likelihood Estimation method as well as other statistical evidence, this paper proposes the use of the sample geometric mean instead of the sample median for the central tendency. Further, the results of seismic reliability evaluations of 4 sample frames are compared based on utilizing both the geometric mean and the sample median. In this process, both first and second order power law fits of the hazard curve are implemented to compare the effects of hazard estimation and the selection of the central tendency on the final results. It is observed in the application example that the sample geometric mean could lead to more accurate results.

An Empirical Study of Chinese EFL Learners’ Attention to Meaning and Form in the Course of Listening

本研究旨在检测中国英语学习者在听力过程中同时关注语言内容和语言形式的能力。来自伊犁师范学院外语系的89名学生被分为四个组在分别完成听内容以及听内容并关注不同语言形式的任务后对所听文章内容进行了回顾。对学生内容回顾的定量分析表明:尽管学生对同时关注语言内容和语言形式存在困难,关注话语中有明显语言含义和发音清晰的语言形式不会对内容理解产生过大负面影响。这一结果昭示了利用听力教学促进学生语言知识学习的可行性,即通过听简单易懂的材料等方法让学习者更多关注语言的规范表达,从而实现听力理解和听力学习的有机结合。
