Zr-Y jointly modified silicide coatings were prepared on an Nb-Ti-Si-Cr based ultrahigh temperature alloy by pack cementation process. The wear behaviors of both the base alloy and coatings were comparatively studied at room temperature and 800 ℃ using SiC balls as the counterpart. The Zr-Y jointly modified silicide coating is mainly composed of a thick (Nb,X)Si2 outer layer and a thin (Ti,Nb)5Si4 inner layer. The coatings possess much higher microhardness than the base alloy. The wear rates of both the base alloy and coatings increase with increasing the sliding loads. However, the coatings have much lower wear rates than the base alloy under the same sliding conditions. The coatings have superior anti-friction property, and can provide effective protection for the base alloy at both room temperature and 800 ℃ in air. 展开更多

Titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating was prepared on 45# carbon steel by electrical discharge coating (EDC), and the compositions, morphology and microstructure of the coating were studied. In addition, its friction and wear behaviors relative to the physical vapor deposition (PVD) TiN coating were investigated. The results show that the TiCN coating features a thickness of 15μm with a primary phase of TiC 0.3 N 0.7 . The wear rates of the two coatings have no clear distinction at low applied loads. However, severe abrasive wear appears in the PVD TiN coating when the applied load exceeds 30 N, while the TiCN coating features better wear resistance. The abrasive wear with coating peelings is found to be the predominant wear mechanism at high applied loads. 展开更多

Nanostructured (ns) materials, i.e., polycrystalline materials with grain sizes in the nanometer regime (typically below 100 nm), have drawn considerable attention in the past decades due to their unique properties such as high strength and hardness. Wear resistance of ns materials, one of the most important properties for engineering materials, has been extensively investigated in the past decades. Obvious differences have been identified in friction and wear behaviors Between the ns materials and their corresponding coarse-grained (cg) counterparts, consistently correlating with their unique structure characteristics and mechanical properties. On the other hand, the superior tribological properties of ns materials illustrate their potential applications under contact loads. The present overview will summarize the important progresses achieved on friction and wear behaviors of ns metallic materials, including ultrafine-grained (ufg) materials in recent years. Tribological properties and effects on friction and wear behaviors of ns materials will be discussed under different wear conditions including abrasive wear, sliding wear, and fretting wear. Their correlations with mechanical properties will be analyzed. Perspectives on development of this field will be highlighted as well. 展开更多

The resin-matrix pantograph contact strip (RMPCS),which has excellent abrasion resistance with electrical current and friction-reducing function, was developed in view of the traditional contact strips with high maintenance cost, high wear rate with electrical current and severe damage to the copper conducting wire. The characteristics of worn surfaces,cross-section and typical elemental distributions of RMPCS were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersion spectrometry (EDS).The wear behavior and arc discharge of RMPCS against copper were investigated with self-made electrical wear tester. The results show that the electrical current plays a critical role in determining the wear behavior, and the wear rate of the RMPCS against copper with electrical current is 2.7-5.8 times higher than the value without electrical current. The wear rate of the contact strip increases with the increase of the sliding speed and electrical current density. The main wear mechanism of RMPCS against copper without electrical current is low stress grain abrasive and slightly adhesive wear, while arc erosion wear and oxidation wear are the dominate mechanism with electrical current, which is accompanied by adhesive wear during the process of wear. 展开更多

The friction and wear behaviors of biodegradable Mg-6Gd-0.5Zn-0.4Zr(wt%,GZ60K)alloy were evaluated under simulated body fluid(SBF)condition using ball-on-disk configuration and compared with those under dry sliding condition. The results show that under dry sliding and SBF conditions, the friction coefficient declines with increasing applied load and keeps stable with prolonging sliding time. The friction coefficient of the alloy effectively decreases in SBF as compared to dry sliding due to lubrication caused by SBF.The real wear rates under SBF condition are lower than those under dry sliding condition for each parameter.Nevertheless, the nominal wear rates are higher in SBF which are attributed to the more mass loss caused by corrosion but not wear. Both the nominal wear rate in SBF and the dry sliding wear rate increase with increasing applied load, and they decline firstly and then keep stable with prolonging sliding time.It is concluded that the wear of the alloy is restricted by the SBF,but the corrosion of the alloy is aggravated by the wear. 展开更多

The microstructures, friction and wear behavior under dry sliding condition of electrodeposited amorphous Fe-Co-W alloy deposits heat treated at different temperatures were studied. A comparative study of hard chrome deposit under the same testing condition was also made. The experimental results show that the hardness and wear resistance of amorphous Fe-Co-W alloy deposits are improved with the increasing of heat treatment temperature, and reach the maximum value at 800 ℃, then decrease above 800 ℃. Under 40 N load, the wear resistance properties of the alloy deposits heat treated at 800 ℃ are superior to those of hard chrome deposit. The main wear mechanisms of amorphous Fe-Co-W alloy deposits heat treated below 600 ℃ are peeling, plastic and flowing deformation; when the deposits are heat treated above 700 ℃, they are plastic and flowing deformation. While the main wear mechanisms of hard chrome are abrasive wear, fatigue and peeling. 展开更多

To explore wear mechanism of stainless steel used in nuclear pump, the wear properties and the worn surface characteristics of unlubricated 304L austenitic stainless steel on itself were investigated in air at room temperature. The experimental results demonstrated that the wear rate of the material decreased with the increase of the wear time. The friction coefficient fluctuated severely when the applied load was 120 N. At 120 N the wear rate was much higher than that of the applied load of 70 N. At 70 N the wear rate did not show much difference from that of 30 N. The wear mechanism was adhesive and abrasive wear under different load at the initial stage of the wear test. Then, the main wear mechanism changed with the wearing time and the applied load. 展开更多

Dry sliding friction and wear properties of A356/SiC composites against AISI D2 were analyzed by means of SEM,XRD and EDS.Results indicated that the wear rate of A356/SiC increased with increase of the applied load.Mild wear took place under lower load, transferring to severe wear at the load heavier than 400 N.Mechanical mixed layer(MML) formed on worn surface during dry sliding friction process, whose thickness became deeper with increasing load.Cracks formed easily in MML and spread transversely, resulting in peeling wear. The wear mechanism of the composite is that oxidation wear mechanism was dominant under low load, with the formation of tiny powdery debris. As the load enhanced, peeling wear was primary due to laminar debris detached from the MML,including oxidation and adhesive wear at the same time, with the load at 350-450 N,adhesive wear with irregular debris and peeling wear were predominant. 展开更多

Titanium has been increasingly applied to biomedical application because of its improved mechanical characteristics, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. However their application remains limited, due to the low strength and poor wear resistance of unalloyed titanium. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the friction and wear behavior of high-strength titanium alloys: Ti-6Al-7Nb used in femoral stem (total hip prosthesis). The oscillating friction and wear tests have been carried out in ambient air with oscillating tribotester in accord with standards ISO 7148, ASTM G99-95a, ASTM G 133-95 under different conditions of normal applied load (3, 6 and 10 N) and sliding speed (1, 15 and 25 mm.s-1), and as a counter pair we used the ball of 100C 6, 10 mm of diameter. The surface morphology of the titanium alloys has been characterized by SEM, EDAX, micro hardness, roughness analysis measurements. The behavior observed for both samples suggests that the wear and friction mechanism during the test is the same for Ti alloys, and to increase resistance to wear and friction of biomedical titanium alloys used in total hip prosthesis (femoral stems) the surface coating and treatment are required. 展开更多

Friction and wear of GCr15 under cross-sliding condition is tested on a ball-on-disc wear test machine. Thisresult shows that the cross-sliding of friction pair leads to different friction and wear behavior. For the condition de-scribed in this paper, the friction coefficients with ball reciprocating are smaller than that without ball reciprocating. The friction coefficients increase with the increase of reciprocating frequency.. The wear weight loss of the ball sub-jected reciprocating sliding decreases, however, the wear weight loss of disc against the reciprocating ball increases. Incross-sliding friction, the worn surfaces of the ball show crinkle appearance along the circumferential sliding traces.Delaminating of small strip debris is formed along the plowing traces on the disc worn surface. The plowing furrow onthe disc surfaces looks deeper and wider than that without reciprocating sliding. The size of wear particles fromcross-sliding wear is larger than those without reciprocating sliding. 展开更多

Two kinds nitride modified layers were obtained on Ti-13Nb-13 Zr surface to improve the wear property via magnetron sputtering and plasma nitriding techniques, respectively. The structures of the modified layer and the worn surface after sliding test were characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The friction and wear behavior of the modified layer against alumina ball was investigated in the absence of lubricant under different loads(1 N and 2 N). The X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that nitride layer is mainly composed of TiN and Ti2N, while coating film consists of Ti N phase. Friction and wear test indicates that both modified layers can improve the wear resistance compared to untreated Ti-13Nb-13 Zr. Ti N thin film produces very hard surface, but may be easy to cause coating fracture and delamination under high normal load. However, nitride layer exhibits better wear performance. This is attributed to hard compound layer maintained its integrity with the hardened nitrogen diffusion zone during friction and wear process. 展开更多

Because the work environment of segment is complex, and the wear failures usually happen, the wear mechanism corresponding to the load is a key factor for the solution of this problem. At present, many researchers have investigated the failure of segment, but have not taken into account the compositive influences of matching and coiling process. To investigate the wear failure of the drum segment of the hot rolling coiler, the MMU-5G abrasion tester is applied to simulate the wear behavior under different temperatures, different loads and different stages, and the friction coefficients and wear rates are acquired. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) is used to observe the micro-morphology of worn surface, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) is used to analyze the chemical composition of worn surface, finally the wear mechanism of segment in working process is judged and the influence regulars of the environmental factors on the material wear behaviors are found. The test and analysis results show that under certain load, the wear of the segment changes into oxidation wear from abrasive wear step by step with the temperature increases, and the wear degree reduces; under certain temperature, the main wear mechanism of segment changes into spalling wear from abrasive wear with the load increases, and the wear degree slightly increases. The proposed research provides a theoretical foundation and a practical reference for optimizing the wear behavior and extending the working life of segment. 展开更多

The B4C/Mg composites fabricated by metal-assisted pressureless infiltration technique were used as experimental material, and the wear behavior and mechanism of this material were studied. A pin-on-disc apparatus was used to evaluate the wear behavior where loads of 20, 40, 60 and 80 N, and a sliding velocity of 250 r/min were exerted. The results show that B4C/Mg composites possess superior wear resistance than pure Mg under various applied loads, and the content of Ti, as infiltration inducer, has an influence on the wear resistance of B4C/Mg composites. The dominant wear mechanism for pure Mg is abrasion, while that for B4C/Mg composites under low loads is adhesion and delamination. Under high loads, the wear mechanism of B4C/Mg composites can be attributed to thermal softening and melting or plastic deformation. 展开更多

The shaft mechanical face seal in a high-speed turbopump of a liquid rocket engine often operates under extremely harsh conditions. For example,a low-temperature and low-viscosity fluid(such as liquid oxygen or liquid hydrogen)is used as a lubricant. The performance of the seal rings, especially the friction and wear behavior, directly determines whether the seal functions normal. In this study, the friction and wear behavior of several ring materials are tested using a pin-on-disk tribo-tester,and the wear morphology of the ring is investigated. The friction coefficients(COFs)and mass-wear rates under dry-friction and water-lubricated conditions, which are used to simulate low-viscosity conditions, are obtained. The results show that at a pressure-velocity(PV)value of 2.4 MPa-(m/s),the COF between the copper graphite(stator)and copper-chrome alloy disk(rotor)is low(with a value of 0.18)under the dry-friction conditions, and the 5-min wear mass of the copper graphite is approximately 2 mg.Under the water-lubricated conditions, compared with other materials(such as copper-chrome alloy,S07 steel, alumina ceramic coating, and nickel-based calcium fluoride),the S07 steel with a diamond-like carbon film is preferred for use in a high-speed turbopump under extreme conditions. The results of this study can provide theoretical and experimental guidance in the design of mechanical face seals in liquid rocket engines. 展开更多

The formation mechanism and wear behavior of a gradient nanostructured(GNS) Inconel 625 alloy were investigated using SEM, TEM and ball-on-disc sliding wear tester. The results show that surface mechanical grinding treatment(SMGT) induced an approximately 800 μm-deep gradient microstructure, consisting of surface nano-grained,nano-laminated, nano-twined, and severely deformed layers, which resulted in a reduced gradient in micro-hardness from 6.95 GPa(topmost surface) to 2.77 GPa(coarse-grained matrix). The nano-grained layer resulted from the formation of high-density nano-twins and subsequent interaction between nano-twins and dislocations. The width and depth of the wear scar, wear loss volume, and wear rate of the SMGT-treated sample were smaller than those of untreated coarse-grained sample. Moreover, the wear mechanisms for both samples were mainly abrasive wear and adhesive wear, accompanied with mild oxidation wear. The notable wear resistance enhancement of the GNS Inconel 625 alloy was attributed to the high micro-hardness, high residual compressive stress, and high strain capacity of the GNS surface layer. 展开更多

Friction and wear performance is critical for dental materials which are inevitably subject to reciprocating friction against opposing teeth in applications. Here in-vitro friction and wear behavior of bioinspired ceramic-polymer composites, which possess nacre-like lamellar and brick-and-mortar architectures and resemble human teeth in their stiffness and hardness, against human tooth enamel were quantitatively investigated to imitate actual service conditions in line with standardized testing configuration. The composites were revealed to exhibit different wear mechanisms and lead to differing extents of wear to the opposing tooth enamel depending on their specific architectural types and orientations. In particular, the brick-and-mortar architecture displayed much less wear than the lamellar one, without obviously roughening the contact surfaces with enamel owing to its high ceramic content, and as such did not accelerate the wear of enamel as compared to smooth ceramics.Such characteristics, combined with its unique stiffness and hardness matching those of human enamel as well as the good fracture toughness and machinability, endow the composite with a promising potential for dental applications. This work may provide an experimental basis to this end and may also give insights towards designing new bioinspired wear-resistant materials for reducing friction and wear. 展开更多

Dry sliding wear tests of a Cr-Mo-V cast hot-forging die steel was carried out within a load range of 50--300 N at 400℃ by a pin-on-disc high temperature wear machine. The effect of heat treatment process on wear resistance was systematically studied in order to select heat treatment processes of the steel with high wear resistance. The morphology, structure and composition were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) ; wear mechanism was also discussed. Tribo-oxide layer was found to form on worn surfaces to reduce wear under low loads, but appear inside the matrix to increase wear under high loads. The tribo-oxides were mainly consisted of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3, FeO only appeared under a high load. Oxidative mild wear, transition of mild-severe wear in oxidative wear and extrusive wear took turns to operate with increasing the load. The wear resistance strongly depended on the selection of heat treatment processes or microstructures. It was found that bainite presented a better wear resistance than martensite plus bainite duplex structure, martensite structure was of the poorest wear resistance. The wear resistance increased with increasing austenizing temperature in the range of 920 to 1 120 ℃, then decreased at up to 1 220 ℃. As for tempering temperature and microstructure, the wear resistance increased in following order: 700℃ (tempered sorbite), 200 ℃ (tempered martensite), 440 to 650 ℃ (tempered troostite). An appropriate combination of hardness, toughness, microstructural thermal stability was re- quired for a good wear resistance in high-temperature wear. The optimized heat treatment process was suggested for the cast hot-forging steel to be austenized at 1020 to 1 120 ℃, quenched in oil, then tempered at 440 to 650℃ for 2 h. 展开更多

The mechanical and tribological properties of hot-pressed copper-based composites containing different amounts of graphene nanosheets(GNSs) are compared with those of copper-graphite(Gr) composites fabricated by the same method. The results show that the Cu-GNSs composites exhibit higher relative density, microhardness and bending strength compared with Cu-Gr composites with the same volume fraction of GNSs and Gr.Moreover, the friction coefficients and wear rates reduce significantly by the addition of GNSs,whereas the limited impact on reducing friction and wear is found on graphite. The abrasive and delamination wear are the dominant wear mechanisms of the composites. It is believed that the superior mechanical and tribological performances of Cu-GNSs composites are attributed to the unique strengthening effect as well as the higher lubricating efficiency of graphene nanosheets compared with those of graphite, which demonstrates that GNS is an ideal filler for copper matrix composites, acting as not only an impactful lubricant but also a favorable reinforcement. 展开更多
