The wear behaviors of both the base alloy and coatings were comparatively studied at room temperature and 800 ℃ using SiC balls as the counterpart. The Zr-Y jointly modified silicide coating is mainly composed of a thick (Nb,X)Si2 outer layer and a thin (Ti,Nb)5Si4 inner layer. The coatings possess much higher microhardness than the base alloy. However their application remains limited, due to the low strength and poor wear resistance of unalloyed titanium. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the friction and wear behavior of high-strength titanium alloys: Ti-6Al-7Nb used in femoral stem (total hip prosthesis). The oscillating friction and wear tests have been carried out in ambient air with oscillating tribotester in accord with standards ISO 7148, ASTM G99-95a, ASTM G 133-95 under different conditions of normal applied load (3, 6 and 10 N) and sliding speed (1, 15 and 25 mm.s-1), and as a counter pair we used the ball of 100C 6, 10 mm of diameter. The surface morphology of the titanium alloys has been characterized by SEM, EDAX, micro hardness, roughness analysis measurements. The behavior observed for both samples suggests that the wear and friction mechanism during the test is the same for Ti alloys, and to increase resistance to wear and friction of biomedical titanium alloys used in total hip prosthesis (femoral stems) the surface coating and treatment are required.展开更多

The structures of the modified layer and the worn surface after sliding test were characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The friction and wear behavior of the modified layer against alumina ball was investigated in the absence of lubricant under different loads(1 N and 2 N). The X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that nitride layer is mainly composed of TiN and Ti2N, while coating film consists of Ti N phase. Friction and wear test indicates that both modified layers can improve the wear resistance compared to untreated Ti-13Nb-13 Zr. Ti N thin film produces very hard surface, but may be easy to cause coating fracture and delamination under high normal load. However, nitride layer exhibits better wear performance. This is attributed to hard compound layer maintained its integrity with the hardened nitrogen diffusion zone during friction and wear process.展开更多

At present, many researchers have investigated the failure of segment, but have not taken into account the compositive influences of matching and coiling process. To investigate the wear failure of the drum segment of the hot rolling coiler, the MMU-5G abrasion tester is applied to simulate the wear behavior under different temperatures, different loads and different stages, and the friction coefficients and wear rates are acquired. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) is used to observe the micro-morphology of worn surface, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) is used to analyze the chemical composition of worn surface, finally the wear mechanism of segment in working process is judged and the influence regulars of the environmental factors on the material wear behaviors are found. The test and analysis results show that under certain load, the wear of the segment changes into oxidation wear from abrasive wear step by step with the temperature increases, and the wear degree reduces; under certain temperature, the main wear mechanism of segment changes into spalling wear from abrasive wear with the load increases, and the wear degree slightly increases. The proposed research provides a theoretical foundation and a practical reference for optimizing the wear behavior and extending the working life of segment.展开更多

A pin-on-disc apparatus was used to evaluate the wear behavior where loads of 20, 40, 60 and 80 N, and a sliding velocity of 250 r/min were exerted. The results show that B4C/Mg composites possess superior wear resistance than pure Mg under various applied loads, and the content of Ti, as infiltration inducer, has an influence on the wear resistance of B4C/Mg composites. The dominant wear mechanism for pure Mg is abrasion, while that for B4C/Mg composites under low loads is adhesion and delamination. Under high loads, the wear mechanism of B4C/Mg composites can be attributed to thermal softening and melting or plastic deformation.展开更多

The results show that surface mechanical grinding treatment(SMGT) induced an approximately 800 μm-deep gradient microstructure, consisting of surface nano-grained,nano-laminated, nano-twined, and severely deformed layers, which resulted in a reduced gradient in micro-hardness from 6.95 GPa(topmost surface) to 2.77 GPa(coarse-grained matrix). The nano-grained layer resulted from the formation of high-density nano-twins and subsequent interaction between nano-twins and dislocations. The width and depth of the wear scar, wear loss volume, and wear rate of the SMGT-treated sample were smaller than those of untreated coarse-grained sample. Moreover, the wear mechanisms for both samples were mainly abrasive wear and adhesive wear, accompanied with mild oxidation wear. The notable wear resistance enhancement of the GNS Inconel 625 alloy was attributed to the high micro-hardness, high residual compressive stress, and high strain capacity of the GNS surface layer.展开更多

The effect of heat treatment process on wear resistance was systematically studied in order to select heat treatment processes of the steel with high wear resistance. The morphology, structure and composition were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) ; wear mechanism was also discussed. Tribo-oxide layer was found to form on worn surfaces to reduce wear under low loads, but appear inside the matrix to increase wear under high loads. The tribo-oxides were mainly consisted of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3, FeO only appeared under a high load. Oxidative mild wear, transition of mild-severe wear in oxidative wear and extrusive wear took turns to operate with increasing the load. The wear resistance strongly depended on the selection of heat treatment processes or microstructures. It was found that bainite presented a better wear resistance than martensite plus bainite duplex structure, martensite structure was of the poorest wear resistance. The wear resistance increased with increasing austenizing temperature in the range of 920 to 1 120 ℃, then decreased at up to 1 220 ℃. As for tempering temperature and microstructure, the wear resistance increased in following order: 700℃ (tempered sorbite), 200 ℃ (tempered martensite), 440 to 650 ℃ (tempered troostite). An appropriate combination of hardness, toughness, microstructural thermal stability was re- quired for a good wear resistance in high-temperature wear. The optimized heat treatment process was suggested for the cast hot-forging steel to be austenized at 1020 to 1 120 ℃, quenched in oil, then tempered at 440 to 650℃ for 2 h.展开更多

This is attributed to hard compound layer maintained its integrity with the hardened nitrogen diffusion zone during friction and wear process.

文摘Because the work environment of segment is complex, and the wear failures usually happen, the wear mechanism corresponding to the load is a key factor for the solution of this problem. The proposed research provides a theoretical foundation and a practical reference for optimizing the wear behavior and extending the working life of segment.
文摘The wear mechanism of metallic card clothing, used in textile industry, was analyzed.A fast wear test for metallic card clothing racks was developed, which was used as collecting the wear metal particles. The failure type of card clothing was analyzed by the mean of scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and ferro-spectrum technology. The results show that the main wear mechanism of metallic card clothing is low load and high repetition interval fatigue wear caused by friction force between fiber and metal wire teeth. The appropriate quenching microstructure, which improves the wear resistance of the metallic card clothing rack is also discussed.

文摘The B4C/Mg composites fabricated by metal-assisted pressureless infiltration technique were used as experimental material, and the wear behavior and mechanism of this material were studied. Under high loads, the wear mechanism of B4C/Mg composites can be attributed to thermal softening and melting or plastic deformation.

文摘The shaft mechanical face seal in a high-speed turbopump of a liquid rocket engine often operates under extremely harsh conditions. For example,a low-temperature and low-viscosity fluid(such as liquid oxygen or liquid hydrogen)is used as a lubricant. The performance of the seal rings, especially the friction and wear behavior, directly determines whether the seal functions normal. In this study, the friction and wear behavior of several ring materials are tested using a pin-on-disk tribo-tester,and the wear morphology of the ring is investigated. The friction coefficients(COFs)and mass-wear rates under dry-friction and water-lubricated conditions, which are used to simulate low-viscosity conditions, are obtained. The results show that at a pressure-velocity(PV)value of 2.4 MPa-(m/s),the COF between the copper graphite(stator)and copper-chrome alloy disk(rotor)is low(with a value of 0.18)under the dry-friction conditions, and the 5-min wear mass of the copper graphite is approximately 2 mg.Under the water-lubricated conditions, compared with other materials(such as copper-chrome alloy,S07 steel, alumina ceramic coating, and nickel-based calcium fluoride),the S07 steel with a diamond-like carbon film is preferred for use in a high-speed turbopump under extreme conditions. The results of this study can provide theoretical and experimental guidance in the design of mechanical face seals in liquid rocket engines.

文摘The formation mechanism and wear behavior of a gradient nanostructured(GNS) Inconel 625 alloy were investigated using SEM, TEM and ball-on-disc sliding wear tester. The notable wear resistance enhancement of the GNS Inconel 625 alloy was attributed to the high micro-hardness, high residual compressive stress, and high strain capacity of the GNS surface layer.

文摘Carbon fibers reinforced lithium aluminosilicate matrix composites(Cf/LAS)were prepared by slurry infiltration combined with a hot press procedure. The friction, wear behavior, and wear mechanisms of Cf/LAS composites under dry sliding conditions were investigated. The results show that the coefficient of friction(COF)initially increased with the increase in carbon fiber content, and reached the maximum value of 0.20 for the 33%Cf/LAS composite. The COF increased sharply with increasing sample temperature from RT to 300℃.The COF remained stable in the temperature range of 300–500℃.The two wear mechanisms of LAS glass-ceramics are fatigue wear and abrasive wear. The Cf/LAS composites demonstrate slight spalling and shallow scratches. These results show that carbon fibers improve the mechanical properties and wear resistance of Cf/LAS composites.

文摘Friction and wear performance is critical for dental materials which are inevitably subject to reciprocating friction against opposing teeth in applications. Here in-vitro friction and wear behavior of bioinspired ceramic-polymer composites, which possess nacre-like lamellar and brick-and-mortar architectures and resemble human teeth in their stiffness and hardness, against human tooth enamel were quantitatively investigated to imitate actual service conditions in line with standardized testing configuration. The composites were revealed to exhibit different wear mechanisms and lead to differing extents of wear to the opposing tooth enamel depending on their specific architectural types and orientations. In particular, the brick-and-mortar architecture displayed much less wear than the lamellar one, without obviously roughening the contact surfaces with enamel owing to its high ceramic content, and as such did not accelerate the wear of enamel as compared to smooth ceramics.Such characteristics, combined with its unique stiffness and hardness matching those of human enamel as well as the good fracture toughness and machinability, endow the composite with a promising potential for dental applications. This work may provide an experimental basis to this end and may also give insights towards designing new bioinspired wear-resistant materials for reducing friction and wear.

文摘Dry sliding wear tests of a Cr-Mo-V cast hot-forging die steel was carried out within a load range of 50--300 N at 400℃ by a pin-on-disc high temperature wear machine. The optimized heat treatment process was suggested for the cast hot-forging steel to be austenized at 1020 to 1 120 ℃, quenched in oil, then tempered at 440 to 650℃ for 2 h.
文摘The mechanical and tribological properties of hot-pressed copper-based composites containing different amounts of graphene nanosheets(GNSs) are compared with those of copper-graphite(Gr) composites fabricated by the same method. The results show that the Cu-GNSs composites exhibit higher relative density, microhardness and bending strength compared with Cu-Gr composites with the same volume fraction of GNSs and Gr.Moreover, the friction coefficients and wear rates reduce significantly by the addition of GNSs,whereas the limited impact on reducing friction and wear is found on graphite. The abrasive and delamination wear are the dominant wear mechanisms of the composites. It is believed that the superior mechanical and tribological performances of Cu-GNSs composites are attributed to the unique strengthening effect as well as the higher lubricating efficiency of graphene nanosheets compared with those of graphite, which demonstrates that GNS is an ideal filler for copper matrix composites, acting as not only an impactful lubricant but also a favorable reinforcement.
