A finite element vibration model of a multiple wheel-rail system which consists of four wheels, one rail, and a series of sleepers is established to address the problem of rail corrugation in high-speed tracks. In the model, the creep forces between the wheels and rail are considered to be saturated and equal to the normal contact forces times the friction coefficient. The oscillation of the rail is coupled with that of wheels in the action of the saturated creep forces. When the coupling is strong, self- excited oscillation of the wheel-rail system occurs. The self-excited vibration propensity of the model is analyzed using the complex eigenvalue method. Results show that there are strong propensities of unstable self-excited vibrations whose frequencies are less than 1,200 Hz under some conditions. Preventing wheels from slipping on rails is an effective method for suppressing rail corrugation in high-speed tracks. 展开更多

The modeling and self-excited vibration mechanism in the magnetic levitation-collision interface coupling system are investigated.The effects of the control and interface parameters on the system's stability are analyzed.The frequency range of self-excited vibrations is investigated from the energy point of view.The phenomenon of self-excited vibrations is elaborated with the phase trajectory.The corresponding control strategies are briefly analyzed with respect to the vibration mechanism.The results show that when the levitation objects collide with the mechanical interface,the system's vibration frequency becomes larger with the decrease in the collision gap;when the vibration frequency exceeds the critical frequency,the electromagnetic system continues to provide energy to the system,and the collision interface continuously dissipates energy so that the system enters the self-excited vibration state. 展开更多

Combining theoretical and experimental modal analyses on self-excited vibration induced by dry friction between two elastic structures, we can explain the high-order sell-excited vibration phenomenon in which water droplets spurt from fourteen or twelve areas of the Chinese culture relic dragon washbasin when it is rubbed with hands, and clarify the mechanism of the singular high-order self-excited vibration. Based on our previous work, a mathematical model of piecewise-smooth systems is established by means of phase-plane orbit analysis, and it is then used to study the intersting phenomena of Chinese cultural relic Dragon Washbasin. The mechanism of nonlinear damping is analyzed; the approximate analytical solution of self-excited vibration of piecewise-smooth nonlinear systems induced by dry friction is derived by means of KB Method, the results of which agree well with that of the numerical solution. Therefore, the method presented in this paper is proved to be very efficient in analyzing the self-excited vibration of piecewise-smooth systems induced by dry friction. 展开更多

Based on our previous work([1]), self-excited vibration of a multi-degree-of-freedom system caused by dry friction between two elastic structures is investigated using the Chinese cultural relic dragon washbasin as an example. Some new characteristics of the self-excited vibration in this kind of system are found. The conditions under which self-excited vibration occurs at low-order or high-order modes are discussed. Effects of changes in parameters of the system on the self-excited vibration are analyzed. The vibration mechanism of the water droplets spurting phenomenon of the Chinese cultural relic dragon washbasin is further explained. The research showed that self-excited vibration was closely related with damping of driveline, the variation of friction coefficient, equiva- lent radius of friction plate and applied force of pressure plate. Six DOFs torsional vibration model of vehicle driveline was established according to the parameters of the certain compact car. The simula- tion was carried out and the result was compared with test data. It was found that the negative slope of friction coefficient with relative slip speed does not necessarily lead to self-excited vibration and the frequency of self-excited vibration on 1st gear is near to the 1st order of torsional natural frequen- cy. The influence of each viscous damping in driveline on self-excited vibration was analyzed by sim- ulation and the results showed that increasing the torsional dampings of half-axles and tires properly was effective to improve launch shudder phenomenon. 展开更多

The forming performance of sheet metals in the deep-drawing process with ultrasonic vibrations can be improved by the surface effect between the sheet metal and the die.A sheet metal friction test with ultrasonic vibrations is performed to explore the cause of the surface effect.The frictional characteristics are investigated,and the corresponding friction expressions are established based on the contact mechanics and the elastic–plastic contact model for rough surfaces.Friction is caused by the elastic–plastic deformation of contacting asperities under normal loads.The actual contacting region between two surfaces increases with normal loads,whereas the normal distance decreases.The normal distance between the contacting surfaces is changed,asperities generate a tangential deformation with ultrasonic vibrations,and the friction coefficient is eventually altered.Ultrasonic vibrations are applied on a 40Cr steel punch at the frequency of 20 kHz and the amplitude of 4.2μm.In the friction tests,the punch is perpendicular to the surface of the magnesium alloy AZ31B sheet metals and is sliding with a relative velocity of 1 mm/s.The test results show that the friction coefficient is decreased by approximately 40%and the theoretical values are in accordance with the test values;Ultrasonic vibrations can clearly reduce wear and improve the surface quality of parts. 展开更多

This work addresses the saturation influence of control voltage on the occurring of self-excited vibration of maglev vehicle-bridge interaction system, which greatly degrades the stability of the levitation control, decreases the ride comfort, and restricts the cost of the whole system. Firstly, the interaction model of vehicle-bridge system is developed. Based on the interaction model, the relationship between the control voltage and vibration frequency is solved. Then, the variation of the effective direct component and fundamental harmonic are discussed. Furthermore, from the perspective of energy transmission between the levitation system and bridge, the principle underlying the self-excited vibration is explored, and the influence on the stability is discussed. Finally, in terms of the variation of the characteristic roots, the influence is analyzed further and some conclusions are obtained. This study provides a theoretical guidance for mastering the self-excited vibration problems. 展开更多

The self-excited vibration problems of maglev vehicle-bridge interaction system were addressed, which greatly degrades the stability of the levitation control, decreases the ride comfort, and restricts the cost of the whole system. Firstly, the coupled model containing the quintessential parts was built, and the mechanism of self-excited vibration was explained in terms of energy transmission from levitation system to bridge. Then, the influences of the parameters of the widely used integral-type proportion and derivation(PD) controller and the delay of signals on the stability of the interaction system were analyzed. The result shows that the integral-type PD control is a nonoptimal approach to solve the self-excited vibration completely. Furthermore, the differential-type PD controller can guarantee the passivity of levitation system at full band. However, the differentiation of levitation gap should be filtered by a low-pass filter due to noise of gap differentiation. The analysis indicates that a well tuned low-pass filter can still keep the coupled system stable. 展开更多

This work addresses the problem of self-excited vibration,which degrades the stability of the levitation control,decreases the ride comfort,and restricts the construction cost of maglev system.Firstly,a minimum model containing a flexible bridge and a single levitation unit is presented.Based on the simplified model,the principle underlying the self-excited vibration is explored.After investigations about the energy transmission between the levitation system and bridge,it is concluded that the increment of modal damping can dissipate the accumulated energy by the bridge and the self-excited vibration may be avoided.To enlarge the equivalent modal damping of bridge,the sky-hooked damper is adopted.Furthermore,to avoid the hardware addition of real sky-hooked damper,considering the fact that the electromagnet itself is an excellent actuator that is capable of providing sufficiently fast and large force acting on the bridge to emulate the influence of the real sky-hooked damper,the technique of the virtual sky-hooked damper is proposed.The principle underlying the virtual sky-hooked damper by electromagnet is explored and the vertical velocity of bridge is estimated.Finally,numerical and experimental results illustrating the stability improvement of the vehicle-bridge interaction system are provided. 展开更多

This paper proposes a new non-magnetic motor with a rotor rotated by using the resonance energy of a bimorph cantilever beam excited by electrostatic force. The use of flexible material enables conversion of translational vibration to rotary movement in one direction. Basic characteristics of a prototype motor with two bimorph cantilever beams, such as rotational speed, output torque, and efficiency were determined experimentally. Results show that a maximum rotational speed of 2800 rpm was obtained without a load torque. It is also observed that this motor produces the output torque of 98 μNm when the rotational speed was 980 rpm. The maximum efficiency was 24% when the input power was 0.065 W. 展开更多

To ascertain the influence of the boundary friction on mechanical properties of disc-spring vibration isolators a load-displacement hysteresis curve formula of disc-spring vibration isolators is derived on the basis of the energy conservation law as well as considering the effect of the boundary friction.The formula is validated through the finite element analysis and static load tests.On this basis the effect of the boundary friction on the bearing capacity is researched. Then the dynamic performance of disc-spring vibration isolators is studied by dynamic tests.The experimental results indicate that the boundary friction can promise a larger damping with a ratio of 0.23 for disc-spring vibration isolators.Compared with the loading frequency the loading amplitude has a greater impact on the energy consumption dynamic stiffness and damping of vibration isolators.This research can provide valuable information for the design of disc-spring vibration isolators. 展开更多

Ultrasonic vibration enhanced friction stir welding (UVeFSW) is a recent modification of conventional friction stir welding (FSW), which transmits ultrasonic vibration directly into the localized area of the workpiece near and ahead of the rotating tool. In this study, a high strength aluminium alloy (2024-T4) was welded by this process and conventional FSW, respectively. Then tensile tests, microhardness tests and fracture surface analysis were performed successively on the welding samples. The tests results reveal that ultrasonic vibration can improve the tensile strength and the elongation of welded joints. The microhardness of the stir zone also increases. 展开更多

A novel variant of friction stir welding process, referred as ultrasonic vibration enhanced friction stir welding, is developed to transmit ultrasonic vibration energy directly into the localized area of the workpiece near and ahead of the rotating tool. Experiments are conducted on 6061-T4 aluminium alloy plates by this new process and the conventional friction stir welding process, respectively. The morphology and macrograph of the welds under both conditions are observed and contrasted. The experimental results show that ultrasonic vibration enhanced friction stir welding can improve the weld formation quality and increase the welding efficiency. And it just needs a smaller axial downward force. Because that the added action of ultrasonic vibration energy may enhance the localized softening extent and the plastic flow around the tool. In addition, it also improves the mechanical properties of the welded joints. 展开更多

The trends of various aspects with and without ultrasonic vibrations in FSW process are studied and presented. The influence of ultrasonic vibrations on welding loads, temperature history, weld morphology, material flow, weld microstructure and mechanical properties are revisited. Ultrasonic assisted FSW offers numerous advantages over the conventional FSW process. The superimposing of high-frequency vibrations improves various phenomena of the process and the physical,metallurgical,mechanical and tribological properties of the welded joint. The ultrasonic assisted FSW process has a potential to benefit the industry sector. A two-dimensional cellular automaton(CA)model was utilized to analyze the effect of mechanical vibration on microstructure evolution of AZ91 alloy during friction stir welding(FSW).The simulated results,namely grain topology,grain size distribution,average grain size,and also the dynamic recrystallization(DRX)fraction were compared with measured data.The adequate comparability between FEM and experimental data shows that the CA method can be applied to the analysis of the microstructure progression during the friction stir welding of AZ91 alloy.It is concluded that the dislocation density during the friction stir vibration welding(FSVW)is higher than that in the FSW process and the process of nucleation and grain growth is faster for samples during FSVW compared to FSW.The grain size modification and DRX phenomenon with various vibration frequencies were also simulated in detail during FSVW.It is found that vibration makes nucleation start earlier and decreases the proportion of the incubation period and the percentage of recrystallization as vibration frequency improves. 展开更多

This study compared the microstructure and mechanical characteristics of AA6061-T6 joints produced using friction stir welding(FSW),friction stir vibration welding(FSVW),and tungsten inert gas welding(TIG).FSVW is a modified version of FSW wherein the joining specimens are vibrated normal to the welding line during FSW.The results indicated that the weld region grains for FSVW and FSW were equiaxed and were smaller than the grains for TIG.In addition,the weld region grains for FSVW were finer compared with those for FSW.Results also showed that the strength,hardness,and toughness values of the joints produced by FSVW were higher than those of the other joints produced by FSW and TIG.The vibration during FSW enhanced dynamic recrystallization,which led to the development of finer grains.The weld efficiency of FSVW was approximately 81%,whereas those of FSW and TIG were approximately 74%and 67%,respectively. 展开更多

A disc-pad friction system is modelled as that two moving pads act symmetrically on an annular beam with flexible boundary condition.Simulation procedure is proposed to deal with the moving interactions and calculation is carried out by using the finite difference method,which shows that only the first-order mode vibration of the beam can be induced.Then the partial differential equation of motion of the disk is reduced to a first-order mode vibration system with time-varying stiffness.As the disk speed is decreased below the critical speeds,the relative equilibrium of the pad on the disk loses its stability and stick-slip type limit cycle vibrations are resulted in all directions′movements.Acceleration of the disk motion on the frictional instability is also investigated.The period of stick-slip vibration with large amplitude will be shortened with higher moving deceleration. 展开更多

Friction stir processing(FSP)can be used to improve surface composites.In this study,a modified method of FSP called friction stir vibration processing(FSVP)was applied to develop a surface composite on AZ91 magnesium alloy.In this technique,the workpiece is vibrated normal to the processing direction.The results illustrated that compared with the FSP method,the FSVP caused a better homogeneous distribution of SiC particles in the microstructure.The results also showed that matrix grains of friction stir vibration processed(FSV-processed)samples((26.43±2.00)μm)were finer than those of friction stir processed(FS-processed)specimens((39.43±2.00)μm).The results indicated that the ultimate tensile strength(UTS)of FSV-processed specimens(361.82 MPa)was higher than that of FS-processed specimens(324.97 MPa).The higher plastic strain in the material during FSVP,due to workpiece vibration,resulted in higher dynamic recrystallization,and consequently,finer grains were developed.The elongation and formability index of the FSV-processed specimen(16.88%and 6107.52 MPa·%,respectively)were higher than those of the FS-processed sample(15.24%and 4952.54 MPa·%,respectively).Moreover,the effects of FSVP were also found to intensify as the vibration frequency increased. 展开更多
