Diseases and disorders of the central nervous system often require significant interventions to restore lost function due to their com- plexity. Examples of such disorders include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord in)ury. These diseases and disorders result trom healthy cells being destroyed, which in turn causes dysfunction in the cen- tral nervous system, The death of these cells can trigger a cascade of events that affect the rest of the body, causing symptoms that become progressively worse over time. Developing strategies for repairing the damage to the central nervous system remains chal- lenging, in part due to its inability to regenerate. 展开更多

A new method of revising activity values has been derived based on the so called correction factor function for binary alloys with a large difference between two components. The correction factor is a function of physical properties formed by the difference of two components. Its absolute value increases with the enhancement of the difference in the character of components. It can be either positive or negative and the rules for selecting the sign of correction factor have been analyzed. Results are in good agreement with the experimental values. 展开更多

Dynamic stress intensity factors are evaluated for thick-walled cylinder with a radial edge crack under internal impulsive pressure. Firstly, the equation for stress intensity factors under static uniform pressure is used as the reference case, and then the weight function for a thick-walled cylinder containing a radial edge crack can be worked out. Secondly, the dynamic stresses in uncracked thick-walled cylinders are solved under internal impulsive pressure by using mode shape function method. The solution consists of a quasi-static solution satisfying inhomogeneous boundary conditions and a dynamic solution satisfying homogeneous boundary condi- tions, and the history and distribution of dynamic stresses in thick-walled cylinders are derived in terms of Fourier-Bessel series. Finally, the dynamic stress intensity factor equations for thick-walled cylinder containing a radial edge crack sub- jected to internal impulsive pressure are given by dynamic weight function method. The finite element method is utilized to verify the results of numerical examples, showing the validity and feasibility of the proposed method. 展开更多

The necessity for understanding normal human cognitive processes and behavior, and themechanisrns which result in dysfunction in these processes are dependant on utilization of a suitable animal model. In order to develop pharmaceutical agents to alleviate mental disturbances and enable the individual to cope within the norms of society, it is incumbent upon investigators to choose a species in which pharmacokinetic principles are established and resemble those of hurnans. The choice of rats in cognition research studies has specific advantages in that these anirnals possess similar pharrnacodynamic parameters to hurnans. Further advantages include availability, low cost, ease of breeding, maintenance and an extensive literature database which enable comparisons to present findings. However, there are substantial differences in the perforrnance of various rat strains in tasks of learning, memory, attention, and responses to stress or drugs. In addition to rat strain, quantity of thed also exerts profound consequences on animal behavior. The aim of this review is to demonstrate that there are differences in the central nervous systern responsivencess of rat strains to chemicals and these could be related to factors such as source of supplier, type and quantity of feed, or season of the year. It is also evident that the genotype differs amongst strains and this may be responsible for the observed differences in CNS sensitivity to chemicals. Strain differences must be identified and taken into consideration in interpretation of assessrnent of neurobehavioural functions. It is also incumbent upon the investigators to utilize healthy (diet-controlled) animal models. 展开更多

Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors regulate the differentiation of various tissues in a vast diversity of species. The bHLH protein Atonal was first identified as a proneural gene involved in the formation of mechanosensory cells and photoreceptor cells in Drosophila (larman et al., 1993, 1994). Atonal is expressed in sensory organ precursors and is required and sufficient for the development of chordotonal organs (Jar- man et al., 1993). Moreover, Atonal expression is observed in the developing eye and is essential for the differentiation of R8 photoreceptors, which are the first photoreceptors that appear during development. Atonal is not involved in the formation of other photoreceptors (R1-R7) directly. However, R8 photore- ceptors recruit other photoreceptors from the surrounding cells (Jarman et al., 1994). 展开更多

The hatches for inspecting are usually designed with elliptical holes in airplane structures, so computation of the stress intensity factor of three dimensional crack at elliptical holes is pivotal for damage tolerance analysis of these structures. In this paper, weight function is derived for a two dimensional through cracks at elliptical holes by applying a compounding method. Stress intensity factor formulas for an internal surface semi-elliptical crack in elliptical holes are obtained wing the three dimensional weight function method. Stress intensity factors for an internal surface semi-elliptical crack in elliptical holes under remote tension are computed. At the same time, research on how radius of curvature for elliptical holes affect stress intensity factors was conducted. Stress intensity factors decrease when radius of curvature increases. Some results and conclusions which are of practical value are given. 展开更多

The current method of case-based design (CBD) can be well practiced forconfiguration design in which design experience knowledge is involved. However, since the designcase is confined to a certain application domain, it is difficult for CBD to be applied toconceptual design process that develops concepts to meet design specifications. Firstly, a functionfactor description space is erected to provide an exhibition room for all functions of design cases.Next, the approach for identifying the space state of function factor in description space isproposed, including the determination of the similarities between function factors of design case. And then a general object-oriented representation for design case is presented by bringing the classof function and in-out flow into the current case representation. Finally, a living example forelectro-pet design that illustrates the implementation of the method for case-based conceptualdesign based on distributed design case repositories is described. 展开更多

Using the complex variable function method and the technique of the conformal mapping, the fracture problem of a semi-infinite crack in a piezoelectric strip is studied under the anti-plane shear stress and the in-plane electric load. The analytic solutions of the field intensity factors and the mechanical strain energy release rate are presented under the assumption that the surface of the crack is electrically impermeable. When the height of the strip tends to infinity, the analytic solutions of an infinitely large piezoelectric solid with a semi-infinite crack are obtained. Moreover, the present results can be reduced to the well-known solutions for a purely elastic material in the absence of the electric loading. In addition, numerical examples are given to show the influences of the loaded crack length, the height of the strip, and the applied mechanical/electric loads on the mechanical strain energy release rate. 展开更多

The present paper is exposed theoretically to the influence on the dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF) in the piezoelectric bi-materials model with two symmet- rically permeable interracial cracks near the edges of a circular cavity, subjected to the dynamic incident anti-plane shearing wave (SH-wave). An available theoretical method to dynamic analysis in the related research field is provided. The formulations are based on Green's function method. The DSIFs at the inner and outer tips of the left crack are obtained by solving the boundary value problems with the conjunction and crack- simulation technique. The numerical results are obtained by the FORTRAN language program and plotted to show the influence of the variations of the physical parameters, the structural geometry, and the wave frequencies of incident wave on the dimensionless DSIFs. Comparisons with previous work and between the inner and outer tips are con- cluded. 展开更多

Stroke causes long-term disability, and rehabilitative training is commonly used to improve the consecutive functional recovery. Following brain damage, surviving neurons undergo morphological alterations to reconstruct the remaining neural network. In the motor system, such neural network remodeling is observed as a motor map reorganization. Because of its significant correlation with functional recovery, motor map reorganization has been regarded as a key phenomenon for functional recovery after stroke. Although the mechanism underlying motor map reorganization remains unclear, increasing evidence has shown a critical role for axonal remodeling in the corticospinal tract. In this study, we review previous studies investigating axonal remodeling in the corticospinal tract after stroke and discuss which mechanisms may underlie the stimulatory effect of rehabilitative training. Axonal remodeling in the corticospinal tract can be classified into three types based on the location and the original targets of corticospinal neurons, and it seems that all the surviving corticospinal neurons in both ipsilesional and contralesional hemisphere can participate in axonal remodeling and motor map reorganization. Through axonal remodeling, corticospinal neurons alter their output selectivity from a single to multiple areas to compensate for the lost function. The remodeling of the corticospinal axon is influenced by the extent of tissue destruction and promoted by various therapeutic interventions, including rehabilitative training. Although the precise molecular mechanism underlying rehabilitation-promoted axonal remodeling remains elusive, previous data suggest that rehabilitative training promotes axonal remodeling by upregulating growth-promoting and downregulating growth-inhibiting signals. 展开更多

The shape and size optimization of brackets in hull structures was conducted to achieve the simultaneous reduction of mass and high stress, where the parametric finite element model was built based on Patran Command Language codes. The optimization procedure was executed on Isight platform,on which the linear dimensionless method was introduced to establish the weighted multi-objective function. The extreme processing method was applied and proved effective to normalize the objectives. The bracket was optimized under the typical single loads and design waves, accompanied by the different proportions of weights in the objective function,in which the safety factor function was further established, including yielding, buckling, and fatigue strength, and the weight minimization and safety maximization of the bracket were obtained. The findings of this study illustrate that the dimensionless objectives share equal contributions to the multi-objective function, which enhances the role of weights in the optimization. 展开更多
