We improve the neutrino- dominated accreting flows by including the effects of magnetic fields. We find that more than half of the liberated energy can be extracted directly by the large-scale magnetic fields in the disk, and it turns out that the temperature of the disk is a bit lower than the neutrino-dominated accreting flows without magnetic field. Therefore, the outflows are magnetically-dominated rather than neutrino dominated. In our model, the neutrino mechanism can fuel some GRBs (not the brightest ones), but cannot fuel X-ray flares. The magnetic processes (both BZ and electromagnetic luminosity from a disk) are viable mechanisms for most of GRBs and their following X-ray flares.展开更多

Within this spectrum particular frequency ranges are defined in order to relate these to behavior. Frequencies above 35 Hz are generally labeled as gamma oscillations, especially as low gamma (40 - 55 Hz) or high gamma (70 - 100 Hz). In order to learn more about this feature, we implanted a set of 4 bipolar concentric steel electrodes in frontal cortex, hippocampus, striatum and midbrain reticular formation of 10 rats. After recovery, field potentials were recorded and wirelessly transmitted to our computer for frequency analysis. At the same time, motion was registered during the whole experimental period of 5.75 hours. Results revealed that low gamma activity only emerged when the animal moved—at least his head. FFT of the data showed—besides other frequencies—a slow gamma activity peaking around 47 Hz pre-dominantly within the striatum, less in frontal cortex and reticular formation and nearly none in the hippocampus. Spectral analysis was performed for single epochs of 4 seconds and all 15 minutes intervals. Correlation analysis of these intervals was done to motion data. All rats showed a highly significant correlation between gamma activity and movement. We therefore conclude from these experiments that this slow gamma activity of the field potentials is not only related to movement, but possibly part of the general neuronal coding of movement.展开更多

They also contribute to the internal exposure through the ingestion of products and beverages such as water that are close to the earth. The aim of this work is to determine the committed effective dose or Total Indicative Dose (TID) due to gamma radioactivity of the borehole water from the Nord Riviera (NR) well field operated by the Côte d’Ivoire Water Distribution Company (SODECI) for the supply of drinking water to part of the population of Abidjan. In addition, the populations, with their habits, could use these borehole waters directly as drinking water. To this end, water samples from the seven (07) functional boreholes were collected and analyzed on a gamma spectrometry chain, equipped with an HPGe detector in the laboratory of the Radiation Protection Institute (RPI) of the GHANA Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC). The results of the specific activities of 238U, 232Th and 40K obtained were transcribed into TID. As the natural radioactivity of the borehole water is high [1], the TIDs calculated from the activity results of the natural radionuclides238U, 232Th, and 40K vary for the seven boreholes from 0.150 to 0.166 mSv/yr with an average of 0.161 ± 0.034 mSv/yr. The TID of the control tower, where the borehole water is mixed and treated for household use, is equal to 0.136 ± 0.03 mSv/yr. The TIDs obtained are therefore all slightly greater than the WHO reference dose value of 0.1 mSv/yr. But all remain below the UNSCEAR reference dose of 0.29 mSv/yr.展开更多

The absorbed dose rates due to these radionuclides were calculated. The average absorbed gamma dose rate due to the presence of ^(232)Th,^(238)U and ^(40)K in soil samples is 36.99 nGy·h^(-1).These results indicate no radiological anomaly. This spectrum function, besides some modifications in the coefficients of the resonant term, contains also a non-resonant term which is inversely proportional to the square of the magnetic field. Based on this spectrum function, the hardening of thermal photons through inverse Compton scattering by relativistic electron beams on the surface of a strongly magnetized neutron star is investigated. Two new features are found. First, there is a maximum scattered photon energy for a given resonant scattering, beyond which resonance disappears. This maximum depends on the electron energy and the magnetic field, but is independent of the incident photon energy. Second, beyond each resonant scattering, there is a high-energy tail, resulting from non-resonant scattering. It is also found that all the tails have a common upper limit which is the highest scattered photon energy for the given incident photon and electron energies. These two new features are absent in the Monte Carlo simulations and therefore, may have physical implications for y-ray emissions.展开更多

These cascades proceed through electron-positron pair production and inverse Compton (IC) scattering in the cosmic background radiation fields, mainly cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation and extragalactic background light in the voids of the universe. The existence of an intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) would deflect paths of electron-positron pairs that scatter CMB photons, causing some observable effects, such as time delay, an ex- tended halo, and a spectral change. Here we reanalyze the diffusion of an electron jet deflected by IGMF and propose a unified semi-analytical model. By using publicly available data from the Fermi/LAT detector and contemporaneous TeV observations, we find that the cascade photon flux is not significantly affected by the IGMF strength for non-variable blazars when the IGMF is weaker than ,-~ 10-16 G. This result is clearly different from previous works that analyzed the extended halo and time de- lay separately for non-variable blazars and flaring blazars. By applying our model to two extreme blazars (1ES 0229+200 and 1ES 1218+304), we obtain the IGMF lower limit of order ≥10-13 --10-14 G in the non-variable case, which is a stronger constraint on the IGMF strength than previous works (≥10-16 ,-- 10-18 G), and ≥10-18 -- 10-19 G in the case of flaring blazars. Furthermore, we study the light curves and extended halo of the cascade photons by considering the effects of the IGME展开更多

The oscillations between photons and ALPs traveling in the magnetic fields have been used to constrain ALP properties. In this work, we obtain some new constraints on the ALP mass ma and the photon-ALP coupling constant g with two different magnetic field models through TeV photons from PKS 2155–304. The first is the discrete-Φ model in which the magnetic field has the orientation angle Φ that changes discretely and randomly from one coherent domain to the next, and the second is the linearly-continuous-Φ model in which the magnetic field orientation angle Φ varies continuously across neighboring coherent domains. For the discrete-Φ model, we can obtain the best constraints on the ALP mass m1 = ma/(1 neV)= 0.1 and on the photon-ALP coupling constant g11= g/(10^-11 GeV^-1)= 5. The reasonable range of the ALP mass m1 is 0.08 ~ 0.2 when g11 = 5,and the only reasonable value of the photon-ALP coupling constant is g11 = 5 when m1 = 0.1. For the linearly-continuous-Φ model, we can obtain the best constraints on the ALP mass m1 = 0.1 and on the photon-ALP coupling constant g11 = 0.7. The reasonable range of the ALP mass m1 is 0.05 ~ 0.4 when g11= 0.7, and the reasonable range of the photon-ALP coupling constant g11 is 0.5 ~ 1 when m1 = 0.1.All of the results are consistent with the upper bound(g < 6.6 × 10^-11 GeV^-1, i.e., g11 < 6.6) set by the CAST experiment.展开更多
