Getting Back on the Fast Track

More than one year after the financial crisis swept the globe, the economy of developing East Asia is starting to see renewed growth. The path toward full recovery is still littered with risks, but the crisis seems to have offered a catalyst for the region to rebalance its export- driven model and seek healthier growth. Ivailo Izvorski and llero, senior economists of the World Bank East Asia and Pacific Region, discussed these issues in the latest East Asia and Pacific Update, a regular assessment of the regional economy. Human coronavirus infection getting into the brain:By February 2022,the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection,causing the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak,has infected around 415 million people,and caused~5.8 million deaths worldwide(WHO,https://covid19.who.int/).As SARS-CoV-2 replicates during the infection,it undergoes genetic mutation to generate variants with varying characteristics and mutation frequencies.The emerging,over time,new variants that differ with transmissibility,immunity,and infection severity pose continuous challenges to established COVID-19 management strategies and regulations.Several SARS-CoV-2 variants such as Omicron(B.1.1.529),Delta(B.1.617.2),UK(B.1.17),South Africa(B.1.351),Brazil(P.1),and New York B.1.525-B.1.526 were detected worldwide and accelerated severity of COVID-19 pandemic(Figure 1A;McQuaid et al.,2021).

Quantum Continual Learning Overcoming Catastrophic Forgetting

Catastrophic forgetting describes the fact that machine learning models will likely forget the knowledge of previously learned tasks after the learning process of a new one.It is a vital problem in the continual learning scenario and recently has attracted tremendous concern across different communities.We explore the catastrophic forgetting phenomena in the context of quantum machine learning.It is found that,similar to those classical learning models based on neural networks,quantum learning systems likewise suffer from such forgetting problem in classification tasks emerging from various application scenes.We show that based on the local geometrical information in the loss function landscape of the trained model,a uniform strategy can be adapted to overcome the forgetting problem in the incremental learning setting.Our results uncover the catastrophic forgetting phenomena in quantum machine learning and offer a practical method to overcome this problem,which opens a new avenue for exploring potential quantum advantages towards continual learning.

Getting Them Out Of Poverty——Poverty Alleviation Project in Manas, Xinjiang

Manas has been the most affluent county in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China. The per capita income reached 5,318 yuan (8.27 yuan against US dollar) in 2002. Yet some households in the county are still living in poverty. To get them rid of poverty, the county government has launched a poverty alleviation project, which has involved some 160 government institntions, enterprises, schools and other units. An official review on the project last year found that good results had been achieved in poverty alleviation. In 2002 alone, 199 households had been helped to shake off the poverty and move towards a relatively comfortable life.
