To bear more loads for heavy truck pistons, the shape of heavy truck piston pinhole is often designed as noncylinder form. Current methods cannot meet the needs for precision machining on non-cylinder piston pinhole (NCPPH). A novel mechanism based on giant magnetostrictive materials (GMM) is presented. New models are established for the servo mechanism, GMM, and magnetizing force of the control solenoid to characterize the relationship between the control current of the solenoid and the displacement of the giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA). Experiments show that the novel mechanism can meet the needs to perform fine machining on NCPPH effectively. 展开更多

The nonlinear dynamic characteristics and optimal control of a giant magnetostrictive film (GMF)-shaped memory alloy (SMA) composite plate subjected to in-plane stochastic excitation are studied. GMF is prepared based on an SMA plate, and combined into a GMF-SMA composite plate. The Van der Pol item is improved to explain the hysteretic phenomena of GMF and SMA, and the nonlinear dynamics model of a GMF-SMA composite cantilever plate subjected to in-plane stochastic excitation is developed. The stochastic stability of the system is analyzed, and the steady-state probability density function of the dynamic response of the system is obtained. The condition of stochastic Hopf bifurcation is discussed, the reliability function of the system is provided, and then the probability density of the first-passage time is given. Finally, the stochastic optimal control strategy is proposed by the stochastic dynamic programming method. Numerical simulation shows that the stability of the trivial solution varies with bifurcation parameters, and stochastic Hopf bifurcation appears in the process; the system's reliability is improved through stochastic optimal control, and the first- passage time is delayed. A GMF-SMA composite plate combines the advantages of GMF and SMA, and can reduce vibration through passive control and active control effectively. The results are helpful for the engineering applications of GMF-SMA composite plates. 展开更多

An infinite panel model of giant magnetostrictive material loudspeaker system (GMMLS) is proposed by making use of finite element method(FEM). Bending wave eigenfunction is introduced to describe the acoustic radiation condition of the panel. Far-field response in different conditions is calculated by changing the mass surface density. Conclusion is obtained by analyzing the curves simulated, that panel which has larger mass surface density can hardly generate far-field acoustic radiation for lower frequency, while the panel has smaller mass surface density generates far-field acoustic radiation for lower frequency evenly and stronger. 展开更多

In order to achieve automatic adjustment of the double-nut ball screw preload, a magnetostrictive ball screw preload system is proposed. A new cylindrical giant magnetostrictive actuator (CGMA), which is the core component of the preload system, is developed using giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) with a hole. The pretightening force of the CGMA is determined by testing. And the magnetic circuit analysis method is introduced to calculate magnetic field intensity of the actuator with a ball screw shaft. To suppress the thermal effects on the magnetostrictive outputs, an oil cooling method which can directly cool the heat source is adopted. A CGMA test platform is established and the static and dynamic output characteristics are respectively studied. The experimental results indicate that the CGMA has good linearity and no double-frequency effect under the bias magnetic field and the output accuracy of the CGMA is significantly improved with cooling measures. Although the output decreased with screw shaft through the actuator, the performance of CGMA meets the design requirements for ball screw preload with output displacement more than 26 μm and force up to 6200 N. The development of a CGMA will provide a new approach for automatic adjustment of double-nut ball screw preload. 展开更多

This property has b een known in elements such as nickel, iron and cobalt. Because the rare-ear th alloy Terfenol-D can offer much larger strains than nickel, iron, cobalt, an d other smart materials such as piezoelectric materials, it is called giant magn etostrictive material. Making use of the giant magnetostrictive material, the gi ant magnetostrictive actuator has higher bandwidth and rapider response than oth er actuators. So it is widely used in active vibration control, especially in lo w frequency stage. In this paper, a turning vibration control system is develope d. The system has an actuator clamped in a flexor that is rigid in the feed and main cutting force directions, yet is flexible in the radial direction. The stru cture of the giant magnetostrictive actuator is developed after magnetic circuit and some structure parameter are calculated. According to the turning frequency , the transient and stable-state output of the giant magnetostrictive actuator is measured. The test result demonstrated that the actuator responses the input rapidly, and the actuator has perfect stable-state and transient output charact eristic. The characteristic includes the stable-state output linearity, repeata bility and transient delay between output displacement and input current. 展开更多

Design of a giant magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer for progressive sheet forming was presented.A dynamic analysis of the theoretically designed ultrasonic vibration system was carried out using the finite element method(FEM).In addition, simulations were performed to verify the theoretical design. Then,a magnetically conductive material was added between the giant magnetostrictive rod and the permanent magnet.Besides, magnetic field simulations of the transducer were performed. The influence of the material thickness of the magnetically conductive material on uniformity of the induced magnetic field was studied.Furthermore, the impedance analysis and amplitude measurement were performed to compare the performance of transducers with and without the magnetically conductive material. The experimental results show that the magnetic field uniformity is the highest when the magnetically conductive material has a thickness of about 1.6 mm.The output amplitude of the giant magnetostrictive transducer is improved by adding the magnetically conductive material. Moreover, the mechanical quality factor and impedance are reduced, while the transducer operates more stably. 展开更多

In this paper, a nonlinear and coupled constitutive model for giant magnetostrictive materials (GMM) is employed to predict the active vibration suppression process of cantilever laminated composite plate with GMM layers. The nonlinear and coupled constitutive model has great advantages in demonstrating the inherent and complicated nonlinearities of GMM in re- sponse to applied magnetic field under variable bias conditions (pre-stress and bias magnetic field). The Hamilton principle is used to derive the nonlinear and coupled governing differential equation for a cantilever laminated composite plate with GMM layers. The derived equation is handled by the finite element method (FEM) in space domain, and solved with Newmark method and an iteration process in time domain. The numerical simulation results indicate that the proposed active control system by embedding GMM layers in cantilever laminated composite plate can efficiently suppress vibrations under variable bias conditions. The effects of embedded placement of GMM layers and control gain on vibration suppression are discussed respectively in detail. 展开更多

Rare earth giant magnetostrictive materials(GMMs)Tb_(1-x)Dy_(x)Fe_(2±δ)(Tb-Dy-Fe)have been successfully employed in many microelectromechanical devices due to their excellent magnetostrictive properties at room temperature.However,Tb-Dy-Fe still shows a relatively large coercivity with high hysteresis, which inevitably limits its application range.Herein, micromagnetic simulations are performed to investigate the size effect of precipitated phase(α-Fe)on coercivity in Tb-Dy-Fe.Simulation results demonstrate that the coercivity is reduced from 31.46 to 12.48 mT with increasing the size ofα-Fe from 4 to 50 nm in Tb-Dy-Fe since the precipitated phase ofα-Fe can act as a magnetization reversal nucleus. This decreasing trend of coercivity can be well fitted with an inverse square relationship, which agrees well with the nucleation theory. Our study highlights that the coercivity of Tb-Dy-Fe can be tailored by tuning the size ofα-Fe precipitation. 展开更多

In this study,a simply supported functionally graded material beam with a giant magnetostrictive thin film(GMF)was selected as an energy harvester.Based on the theory of large deformation and the Villari effect of GMF,piston theory was used to simulate the dynamic equation of the whole structure under supersonic aerodynamic pressure and in a thermal environment by using Hamilton^principle, and the energy harvesting effect of GMF was simulated by using a Runge-Kutta algorithm.Below the critical flutter velocity, the maximum voltage output and energy harvesting results were discussed as they were affected by external factors such as the geometric model of structure parameters, slenderness ratio, gradient index, number of turns of an electromagnetic coil, airflow velocity, and temperature. The electromechanical coupling coefficient/C33 was 71%.The results show that this proposed harvester can achieve an optimal harvesting effect by adjusting the parameters appropriately, and collect energy in thermal and supersonic environments using the GMF,which provides power to sensors of the health monitoring system of the aircraft’s own structure. 展开更多

Purpose–This paper proposes a robust modeling method of a giant magnetostrictive actuator which has a rate-dependent nonlinear property.Design/methodology/approach–It is known in statistics that the Least Wilcoxon learning method developed using Wilcoxon norm is robust against outliers. Thus,it is used in the paper to determine the consequence parameters of the fuzzy rules to reduce the sensitiveness to the outliers in the input-output data. The proposed method partitions the input space adaptively according to the distribution of samples and the partition is irrelative to the dimension of the input data set.Findings–The proposed modeling method can effectively construct a unique dynamic model that describes the rate-dependent hysteresis in a given frequency range with respect to different single-frequency and multi-frequency input signals no matter whether there exist outliers in the training set or not.Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective and insensitive against the outliers.Originality/value–The main contributions of this paper are:first,an intelligent modeling method is proposed to deal with the rate-dependent hysteresis presented in the giant magnetostrictive actuator and the modeling precision can fulfill the requirement of engineering, such as the online modeling issue in the active vibration control;and second, the proposed method can handle the outliers in the input-output data effectively. 展开更多

The giant magnetostrictive rotary ultrasonic processing system(GMUPS)with a loosely-coupled contactless power transfer(LCCPT)has emerged as a high-performance technique for the processing of hard and brittle materials, owing to its high power density.A capacitive compensation is required to achieve the highest energy efficiency of GMUPS to provide sufficient vibration amplitude when it works in the resonance state. In this study,an accurate model of the optimal compensation capacitance is derived from a new electromechanical equivalent circuit model of the GMUPS with LCCPT,which consists of an equivalent mechanical circuit and an electrical circuit. The phase lag angle between the mechanical and electrical circuits is established, taking into account the non-negligible loss in energy conversion of giant magnetostrictive material at ultrasonic frequency. The change of system impedance characteristics and the effectiveness of the system compensation method under load are analyzed. Both idle vibration experiments and machining tests are conducted to verify the developed model. The results show that the GMUPS with optimal compensation capacitance can achieve the maximum idle vibration amplitude and smallest cutting force. In addition, the effects of magnetic conductive material and driving voltages on the phase lag angle are also evaluated. 展开更多

Due to the influence of magnetic hysteresis and energy loss inherent in giant magnetostrictive materials (GMM), output displacement accuracy of giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA) can not meet the precision and ultra precision machining. Using a GMM rod as the core driving element, a GMA which may be used in the field of precision and ultra precision drive engineering is designed through modular design method. Based on the Armstrong theory and elastic Gibbs free energy theory, a nonlinear magnetostriction model which considers magnetic hysteresis and energy loss characteristics is established. Moreover, the mechanical system differential equation model for GMA is established by utilizing D'Alembert's principle. Experimental results show that the model can preferably predict magnetization property, magnetic potential orientation, energy loss for GMM. It is also able to describe magnetostrictive elongation and output displacement of GMA. Research results will provide a theoretical basis for solving the dynamic magnetic hysteresis, energy loss and working precision for GMA fundamentally. 展开更多

Giant magnetostrictive actuators (GMAs) often work in a close-loop feedback system. This system needs independent sensors which may be difficult to be fixed, besides, excessive sensors may cause more unpredicted problems in a large system. This paper aims to develop a self-sensing GMA. An observer based on piezomagnetic equations is constructed to estimate the stress and strain of the magnetostrictive material. The observer based self-sensing approach depends on the facts that the magnetic field is controllable and that the magnetic induction is measurable. Aiming at the nonlinear hysteresis in magnetization, a hys- teresis compensation observer based on Preisach model is developed. Experiment verified the availability of the observer approach, and the hysteresis compensation observer has higher tracking precision than linear observer for dynamic force sensing. 展开更多
