Fatigue cracks that develop in civil infrastructure such as steel bridges due to repetitive loads pose a major threat to structural integrity.Despite being the most common practice for fatigue crack detection,human vi...Fatigue cracks that develop in civil infrastructure such as steel bridges due to repetitive loads pose a major threat to structural integrity.Despite being the most common practice for fatigue crack detection,human visual inspection is known to be labor intensive,time-consuming,and prone to error.In this study,a computer vision-based fatigue crack detection approach using a short video recorded under live loads by a moving consumer-grade camera is presented.The method detects fatigue crack by tracking surface motion and identifies the differential motion pattern caused by opening and closing of the fatigue crack.However,the global motion introduced by a moving camera in the recorded video is typically far greater than the actual motion associated with fatigue crack opening/closing,leading to false detection results.To overcome the challenge,global motion compensation(GMC)techniques are introduced to compensate for camera-induced movement.In particular,hierarchical model-based motion estimation is adopted for 2D videos with simple geometry and a new method is developed by extending the bundled camera paths approach for 3D videos with complex geometry.The proposed methodology is validated using two laboratory test setups for both in-plane and out-of-plane fatigue cracks.The results confirm the importance of motion compensation for both 2D and 3D videos and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed GMC methods as well as the subsequent crack detection algorithm.展开更多

First, the translational motion model is used because of the fact that complex motion can be decomposed as a sum of translational components. Then in this application, the edge gray horizontal and vertical projections are used as the block matching feature for the motion vectors estimation. The proposed algorithm reduces the motion estimation computations by calculating the onedimensional vectors rather than the two-dimensional ones. Once the global motion is robustly estimated, relatively stationary background can be almost completely eliminated through the inter-frame difference method. To achieve an accurate object extraction result, the higher-order statistics (HOS) algorithm is used to discriminate backgrounds and moving objects. Experimental results validate that the proposed method is an effective way for global motion estimation and object extraction.展开更多

The rotation rates were larger than 0. 545°/Ma for Cocos, Philippine Sea, Pacific, Nazca, Australia, India and Arabia plates, but smaller than 0. 315°/Ma. for other plates. Compared to 1997. 0, the Ω values of the three oceanic plates in 2000. 0 increased by,respectively,2.4% ,2. 1% and 41.7%, and the northward movement rates of the the India plate and western part of the Australia plate increased by 3.38 mm/a on the average. The spatial distribution of earthquakes was dependent on earthquake magnitude. Earthquakes of 5.0 ≤ Mw 〈 7.0 were located mainly in plate-margin zones and intra-plate crustal deformation zones joining the southern margin of Eurasia plate. Earthquakes of Mw≥7.0 concentrated basically in the circum-Pacific and South Asia zones, but hardly in midocean-ridge seismic zones. Earthquakes of Mw ≥ 8.0 were located only in the margin zones of the India, Aus- tralia,Pacific and Nazca plates orthogonal to the direction of plate motion. Compared with previous eighteen years, global earthquake activity enhanced obviously after 1994, especially after 2001. The Ω value of a plate was closely related to the activity of strong earthquakes. The largest earthquakes were located in the front-margin zones of plates having the largest Ω values. Energy released by strong earthquakes comes mainly from kinetic energy of the plates. Global seismicity enhancement was caused mainly by the acceleration of the three oceanic plates. Larger enhancement of global earthquake activity lagged behind the movement acceleration of the three oceanic plates by four years.展开更多

Considering the local moving objects or the inevitable mismatch, the matching validation, based on the stable relative distance between the points set is proposed, thus maintaining high accuracy and robustness. Next, the global motion parameters are accumulated for correction by Kalman filteration. A complete theoretical analysis is first established for video stabilization, providing a basis for new stabilization algorithm. Secondly, a new robust global motion estimation (GME) algorithm is proposed. Different from classic methods, the GME algorithm is based on spatial-temporal filtered motion vectors computed by block-matching methods. In addition, effective schemes are employed in correction phase to prevent boundary artifacts and error accumulation. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm has satisfactory stabilization effects while maintaining good tradeoff between speed and precision.展开更多
We elaborate an error budget for the long-term accuracy of IGS(International Global Navigation Satellite System Service) polar motion estimates, concluding that it is probably about 25-30 μas(1-sigma)overall, alt...We elaborate an error budget for the long-term accuracy of IGS(International Global Navigation Satellite System Service) polar motion estimates, concluding that it is probably about 25-30 μas(1-sigma)overall, although it is not possible to quantify possible contributions(mainly annual) that might transfer directly from aliases of subdaily rotational tide errors. The leading sources are biases arising from the need to align daily, observed terrestrial frames, within which the pole coordinates are expressed and which are continuously deforming, to the secular, linear international reference frame. Such biases are largest over spans longer than about a year. Thanks to the very large number of IGS tracking stations, the formal covariance errors are much smaller,around 5 to 10 μas. Large networks also permit the systematic frame-related errors to be more effectively minimized but not eliminated. A number of periodic errors probably also influence polar motion results, mainly at annual, GPS(Global Positioning System) draconitic, and fortnightly periods, but their impact on the overall error budget is unlikely to be significant except possibly for annual tidal aliases. Nevertheless, caution should be exercised in interpreting geophysical excitations near any of the suspect periods.展开更多

First, macro-source parameters characterizing the entire source area, i.e., global source parameters, including fault length, fault width, rupture area, average slip on the fault plane, etc., are estimated by seismogeology survey, seismicity and seismic scaling laws. Second, slip distributions characterizing heterogeneity or roughness on the fault plane, i.e., local source parameters, are reproduced/evaluated by the hybrid slip model. Finally, the finite fault source model, developed from both the global and local source parameters, is combined with the stochastically synthetic technique of ground motion using the dynamic comer frequency based on seismology. The proposed method is applied to simulate the acceleration time histories on three base-rock stations during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Comparisons between the predicted and recorded acceleration time histories show that the method is feasible and practicable.展开更多

The te...Inertial measurement unit (IMU) is a standard motion sensor in modern airborne SAR systems. But how to remove its systematic error is a difficult problem, which impacts the improvement of resolution in azimuth. The technique of motion compensation presented in this paper, uses the GPS as a reference system to estimate and correct the systematic error of the IMU on the concept of linear unbiased minimum variance (LUMV). This new and effective method achieves very accurate position measurement (both high and low frequency) of the APC in not only short but also long terms, so that it can satisfy the requirement of high resolution airborne SAR. In the last section of the paper, some experimental simulations from raw data are given.展开更多
