A forced hydrolysis of ferric salts in the presence of phosphate ions was used to produce α-Fe2O3 spindle-type particles. The oxide powders were first reduced to α-iron under high temperature and controlled dihydrogen atmosphere. Then, the resulting magnetic spindle-type particles were covered by a shell of gold. The formation of the core@shell structure was driven by a redox-transmetalation reaction between iron(0) at the surface of particles and a gold(III) salt. Protected against oxidation, the Fe@Au core@shell nanoparticles were then grafted with a water soluble fluorescent-PEG-thiol. TEM, XRD, EDX and measurements of magnetic properties of particles confirm 1) the conversion of hematite into iron and 2) their subsequent surface protection with a gold shell. Furthermore, the functionalization of the gold nanoparticle surface with a PEG carrying a fluorescent dye was unambiguously attested by confocal laser scanning microscopy.展开更多

Positive dielectrophoresis is used to absorb the gold-coated SU-8 microrods at the edge of the parallel electrodes, thereby forming chains to connect the electrodes. This is a fast automatic microcircuit formation process. Moreover, a non-charged molecule is modified on the surface of the gold-coated SU-8 microrod, and the modified microrods are controlled by the alternating electric field to form a number of chains. The different chains between the parallel electrodes consist of various parallel circuits. In order to compare these chains with different electric surfaces, the impedances of the metallic and modified microrods are measured and compared, and the results show that the gold-coated microrods act as pure resistors, while the microrods functionalized by a non-charged molecule behave as good capacitors.展开更多

B. alexandrina snails were incubated for 12 hours at each tested concentration in the dark, thereafter they were exposed to direct sunlight (336.2 W/m2) for either 2 or 4 hours followed by 24 hours of recovery. Control snails were treated with these concentrations without exposure to light irradiance. Another experiment was carried out simultaneously and the snails were left for 4 weeks of recovery to evaluate their egg-laying capacity (Mx). The results indicate that 5x10–5 Mdm–3 (HpdGNPs) with 4 hours of exposure sunlight suppressed the survival rate of B. alexandrina snails by 50%. Meanwhile, control snails incubated with 5x10–5 Mdm–3 HpdGNPs were not affected and still alive (100%). For snail’s fecundity (Mx), treated snails laid low number of eggs throughout the recov-ery period (4 weeks), in comparison with that of control ones. The highest value of Mx for snails treated with 5x10–5 Mdm–3 Hpd coated GNPs was recorded at the 3rd week of recovery period, being 6.7 eggs/snail, compared to 37.6 eggs/control snail. This has a negative reflect on the reproductive rate (Ro) of treated snails as it was reduced under these conditions by 76.6% and 86.1%, respectively.Histological tests re-vealed injuries in spermatocytes, oocytes, several degenerations of B.alexandrina hermaphrodite gland then evacuations in many gonad’s cells which severely suppressed their capacity for egg-laying. It is concluded from the present work that exposing B. alexandrina snails to sublethal concentrations of the photosensiter Hpd coated GNPs (12 hours incubation, 4 hours exposure to 336.2 W/m2) significantly reduced their reproductive capacity that may have a negative reflect on schistosomiasis transmis-sion.展开更多

The principles of the oxidizing corrosion and coloring were researched. The nonmetal artworks attain vivid and ancient bronze effect by the surface deposition and surface coloring processing. By using this technology, the problems of difficulty-to-plating copper and difficulty-to-archaizing for the large outdoor sculptures and other artworks can be solved, and it has prospective application due to low investment.展开更多

The physiochemical properties of the prepared nanoparticles were characterized by FTIR, UV-vis spectra, and ~1H NMR. Doxorubicin hydrochloride(DOX), an anticancer drug, was used as the model drug to investigate the drug loading, in vitro drug release profiles and cytotoxicity. The experimental results show that DOX-GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD is synthesized with a mean diameter of 116 nm and a sufficient load capacity of about 19.8%. It also has p H-enzyme sensitive and NIRtriggered drug release manner. Cellular uptake indicates that DOX-GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD exhibits a higher cellular uptake via CD44 receptor and integrin receptor mediated endocytosis compared with the GNRs@mSiO_2 modified with one receptor or no receptor. In comparison with chemotherapy or photothermal therapy alone, DOX-GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD displayes the synergistic effects and achieves a higher therapeutic efficacy. It can be expected that DOX-GNRs@mSiO_2-HA-RGD is a potential dual-targeted chemo-photothermal therapeutic platform for effective cancer treatment.展开更多

Polystyrene microspheres with the diameter of 10 μm were coated with a 50 nmthick gold layer using an electroless gold plating approach. Dielectrophoresis (DEP) for bare microspheres and shelled microspheres was theoretically analysed and the real part of the Clausius Mossotti factor was calculated for the two kinds of microspheres. The experiments on the dielectrophoretic characterisation of the uncoated polystyrene microspheres and gold coated polystyrene microspheres (GCPMs) were carried out. Experimental results showed that the gold coated polystyrene microspheres were only acted by a positive dielectrophoretic force when the frequency was below 40M Hz, while the uncoated polystyrene microspheres were governed by a negative dielectrophoretic force in this frequency range. The gold coated polystyrene microspheres were exploited to form the rnicrowire automatically according to their stable dielectrophoretic and electric characterisations.展开更多
