Democracy and Church in Nigeria Today:Implications for Good Governance

The thrust of the paper shows that with the application of the tenets of Democracy, the Church in Nigeria has significant role to play especially in governance issues. The Church cannot be delinked from the state since they need each other for the peaceful co-existence of various groups in the society. Accordingly, Democracy and Church in Nigeria today are partners in progress and not strange bedfellows. Undoubtedly, room for improvement exists still as both are geared towards the social, spiritual, cultural, economic, scientific and technological development. Their ultimate goal is to equip the people with self-transforming knowledge which they will use to change their environment and execute whatever task that they are assigned. Consequently, using an expository investigative and analytic method, the paper challenges that the issues of good governance must be carried out continuously to ensure harmonious co-existence and attainment of a just and nobler society. The Church, as the harbinger of hope, must be at the frontline to fight every ugly behaviour against the principles of democratic governance.

The Role of Philosophy in Insecurity and Good Governance in Nigeria

This paper re-emphasizes the relevance of philosophy in combating insecurity and bringing about good governance in Nigeria.It laments on the Nigerian negligence to the worth of philosophy in addressing the Nigerian social challenges which have called for concerns.Hence,the attitude of Nigerians to have soon forgotten the indispensability of philosophy in addressing social challenges,criticizing the political elites to bring about justice and good governance among other things,is really amazing.Consequently,Nigeria counts backwards whereas her counterparts count forward in terms of development,social tranquillity,good governance,practical and sincere consciousness of morality,strong economy and security,health and education wise,etc.Hence this paper attempts,with every possible effort,to define philosophy and elucidate its worth in tactically engaging insecurity and bringing about good governance.The end of this research will show that philosophy and its critical and systematic tenets are the basic answers to Nigerian challenges especially as they concern insecurity and bad governance.We will critically employ historical and ex post facto methods.

Good Governance and Economic Growth:A Contribution to the Institutional Debate about State Failure in Middle East and North Africa

Several econometric studies(Kauffman,Knack)􀄸tested the relationship between good governance in the sense of“market-enhancing governance”(stimulus institutions market)showing a positive relationship between good governance and economic growth.However,a good governance policy allows developing countries to achieve minimum economic growth and political reforms in order to reach a level of development similar to that of industrialized countries?In this article,we focus on the definition and the development on the concept of good governance by the World Bank and the criticism formulated by Mushtaq Khan􀄹,who reconstructed the notion of governance in a broader sense,taking into account the capacity of states to drive structural change in the institutional,political,economic and social fields,in order to ensure long-term economic growth.Our contribution is to examine the concept of good governance and the failure of states taking into account the level of development and governance capacity based on a structure and distribution of political power that evolves over time and may or may not be positive for growth.The assumption we make here is that the so-called good governance policies are relevant only if countries reach an adequate level of economic and social development that enable institutions of good governance to boost growth.

Improving Land Governance in Nigeria:The Case of Compulsory Acquisition and Compensation Practice

This paper examines land policies on acquisition and compensation practice in Nigeria with the aim of minimizing conflicts in land acquisition and compensation.It further explains the implications of uncoordinated land allocations arising from informal transactions.The paper used self-administered questionnaires on all the fifteen(15)registered estate firms in the 2009 NIESV Directory in Benin City,Edo state to obtain information that helped to determine the fairness of compensation practice and causes of conflict in some communities in the state.The paper revealed that the compensation on acquired landed properties in Nigeria violated the principles of good governance as against what is obtainable in advanced countries.It also observed that inadequacy of compensation paid and delay in payment are the causes of conflict between the acquiring authorities and the affected community/people.The paper concluded that a review of land policies on acquisition and compensation will be a panacea for achieving the principles of good governance.

Development of Chinese Cultural Governance since the Reform and Opening-up

Contemporary Chinese cultural governance is an important part of the national governance system and the modernization of national governance capacity. It must combine international experience and local method together and run through the whole process of cultural system reform. The good governance of culture is the goal pursued by Chinese cultural governance, which displays the management process of maximizing cultural public interest. In the new era, cultural governance reform has experienced governance subject centralized to pluralism, governance space from inside to outside, governance method from ruling by man to the rule of law, governance path from control-oriented government to service-oriented government. To further improve Chinese cultural governance in the new era, relationships between top-level design and grass-root innovation, cultural democracy and cultural concentration, national cultural interests, social cultural interests and cultural interests of the citizens, domestic cultural governance and global culture must be dialectically dealt with. In the government-market-social governance structure, mutual assistance of multiple missions and win-win of multiple subjects can be achieved, thus promoting harmony of multiple interests.

Preservation of Human Rights as the Basis and Objective of a Modern State Governance System

A good state governance system, which features democracy, scientific decision-making, efficiency, civility and rule of law, is indispensable for realizing the Chinese Dream. As both the foundation and the objective of a good governance system, human rights protection should be integrated in all the processes of building a modern governance system. Adherence to public law in administration should be guaranteed in this connection.

The Creation of a Tourism Village Governance Model: Study in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta

This study discusses the creation of a tourism village governance model by conducting a study in Sleman Regency,Special Region of Yogyakarta.The main problem of the study is:How governance models are in accordance with the cultural,community,and geographical characteristics of rural tourism village in Sleman Regency?The purpose of this research:to create a model of tourism governance in a fair,transparent,and accountable manner while continuing to pay attention to sustainability in a professional manner and to be able to preserve local culture by adapting to the development of contemporary tourism.The research method is using a qualitative approach.The result of the study explains that the tourism village in Sleman Regency is divided into two schemes,namely bottom up from the community and top down from the initiation of the government(cq.Department of Tourism).A healthy tourism village governance model involves stakeholders and shareholders equally.Then,it is necessary to determine the Board of Director(BOD)and agents from the shareholders and stakeholders.Then Board Police Manual(BPM)is made,so that there is no hidden information and hidden action between BOD and agent.In conclusion:(1)The tourism village governance model created is expected to be able to bring justice to the shareholders and stakeholders fairly,because it is carried out based on BPM and GCG guidelines so that it still pays attention to sustainability in a professional manner.(2)The creation of the tourism village governance model is able to preserve local culture by adapting the current tourism development,as in the governance structure illustrated in Figure 1.

ON THE RIGHTS PROTECTION OF VULNERABLE GROUPS UNDER THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS:A LITERATURE REVIEW AND PERSPECTIVE FOR FUTURE DIRECTIONS

The legal system for prevention and control of a public health crisis rests on two pillars:human rights protection and good governance.This duality is well illustrated by substantively equal treatment of vulnerable groups in a pandemic from the perspectives of public service,social inclusion,accessible environment,gender equality,and right to health.A review of literature on this topic shows that current research needs to address the gap between“life supremacy”and“equal protection”in the area of human rights protection,and the gap between“putting people first”and“strict control at the grassroots level”in the area of good governance.The research should employ intersectional methodology to highlight the rights logic of the socialist legal system and the key role of the Communist Party of China’s leadership in balancing individual versus community rights,enhancing the governance capability for participation by multiple social agents,ensuring equal protection for disadvantaged groups,promoting inclusive and sustainable development,and realizing the common prosperity of all the people.
