The paper proposes a grammar analysis model to implement an effective grammatical processing for the language. It separates the grammar analysis ofa UMQL query specification into two phases: syntactic analysis and semantic analysis, and then respectively uses Backus-Naur form (EBNF) and logical algebra to specify both restrictive grammar rules. As a result, the model can present error guiding information for a query specification which owns incorrect grammar. The model not only suits well the processing of UMQL queries, but aLso has a guiding significance for other projects concerning query processings of descriptive query languages.展开更多

Resting upon the categories set by Parrot (2000) as well as referring back to comprehensive theories in second language acquisition, it closely examines seven aspects of curriculum of New Century Senior English (NCSE), a senior high school English textbook currently used in Shanghai. It discovers that grammatical features are addressed with a strong intention of raising learners' grammar consciousness other than encouraging using grammar. However, it argues that, though a focus on both form and meaning may play a better role in raising students' grammar awareness, yet in real classroom settings of grammar teaching and learning, multitudes of variables (more than learners and instructors) should be seriously considered.展开更多

However, critical reading of the press news, which requires readers moving beyond comprehension, is rarely involved. This article, using Fairclough's critical discourse analysis (henceforth, CDA) as the theoretical framework, and Halliday's systemic functional grammar (henceforth, SFG) as the analytical tool in the analysis of the news texts, makes a sample analysis of the critical news reading from China Daily on China's response to the US-led campaign against terrorism after the September 11 events, 2001. The analysis made is undertaken in three stages: (1) the Transitivity analysis of the headlines, (2) the textual meaning of the clauses in terms of Themes, and (3) the explanations made to give grounding for the preceding analysis. The paper concludes with the hypothesis that integrating critical news reading into extensive reading instruction will not only improve students' reading skills, but also increase their adequate comprehension to the reading materials, as well as cultivate their critical reading competence.展开更多
